A friend suggested this little cafe. Didn't really know what to expect but loved everything I got. Service was great with the people behind the counter being very friendly.

Popped in for a pot of tea, slice of cake, chat and to catch up on the cafes latest up and Coming events, new ideas and of course, same new recipes on offer. In addition, a great visit had, lovely relaxing atmosphere, comfortable, with plentiful choice of cakes and drinks, either hot or cold. A lovely friendly service from Lydia as usual, whatever your visit whether it be a one off, an event or just popping for a cuppa, all welcomed with friendly smile and greeting that cheers your day. Morover, there are a number of differing themed events on offer, either children or adult based such as, who done it, Murder Mystery, Harry Potter, Mad Hatters Tea Parties, Film nights, Language cafe nights, knitting circle, you name it, this cafe caters for it! Furthermore, Lydias homemade cakes are amazing with a wide selection on offer, vegatarian, Gluten free, vegan choices are available. Also, bespoke cakes can be made by request and ordered in advance to pick up and collect for birthdays or gifts etc. Furthermore, to book an event at Lydias check out her Facebook page, pop in or give her a buzz, there's always something going on, thus offering our local community, a great bespoke service . In conclusion, a brilliant place, great food, great drinks, great customer service. Give it a go, you will not be dissapointed !

We attended Lydia’s ‘ cakeaway’ in Hull for Disney afternoon tea after my sister had seen it advertised on Facebook. After booking and being excited we attended and was disappointed and underwhelmed. At £10 each ( adults and child alike)I thought the food would be wonderful, and the atmosphere electric with excitement. It sadly was not. The room was cold. The food came on just one platter between us and a few sandwiches and biscuits with cakes. Yes they resembled a famous mouse shape, hero biscuit and princess cupcake but not wow! More like what I give my daughter for a picnic at home. The music was on in the background but anyone can play a Disney playlist as we do at home. I thought perhaps a character or two may appear to entertain or say hi to the children in the room but sadly no. Upon entering the cold toilets we were greeted by pink toilet paper ( not good for those with sensitive skin!) and a baby changing mat on the floor ( my daughter pointed out it was sad for any baby who had to lay down to be changed in the cold!). Overall, after many successful trips to various Disney or princess afternoon teas we would rate this as the worst. The potential was absolutely there just the final sparkly touches were missing. The girl serving us was lovely and made time for the children but that isn’t always enough. We will not be returning and have tea booked for half term somewhere else at a whole £5 per child and £10 per adult.

Went to Lydia’s for the Harry Potter afternoon tea. Loved it. Everything was clearly handmade and home baked. A lot of thought had obviously gone into choosing each item of food to fit the theme and everything tasted amazing.

I have had a number of pleasant and relaxing visits to Lydia's Cake away. It has been amazing each visit, with a streamlined menu to meet a number of differing, customers requirements . In addition, Lydia, the owner is welcoming, smiling and extremely friendly. Nothing is to much trouble, the food, nibbles, cakes and drinks are beautiful, at tasty competative prices. Morover, her delights are homemade, her baking is exquisite, that's for sure, and presentation makes for a great experience with bespoke China pottery. This little cafe is a popular meeting place for many, hosting varied events for different occasions, such as a recent Harry Potter themed events, and can be booked for even clubs and get togethers . There are plenty of options including, varied dietery and allergy requirements that are and can be catered for, not to mention veggie based products. Furthermore, it is relaxing, watching the world go bye through the oanaramic window, overlooking Newland Avenue. The foods you will find and to be reccomended through experience are bagels, with cream cheese and strawberries, cheese and Tomato toasties with salad and tortilla chips. Finally, Earl Grey tea in China cups, topped off with a slice of cake, for me it was lime cake, to comiment the savoury course. Great coffee shop, pleasant owner and staff, bespoke surroundings, relaxing and has a 5 on the door, not surprised, its lovely and clean, a little hidden gem. The cafe and owner welcomes changing for people who would like to bring their babies, children, toddlers to a warm and embracing envoiroment . A must for all, Lydia has put her heart and sole into this cafe, and it shows, I could sit their all day and often do and she always remembers conversations had to follow up when you return, impressive ! Give this local place and Lydia and team your support!!!!!

I went here with two friends for a catch up before I go work abroad!! The staff were really friendly and welcoming, we ordered a toastie and a can of coke for starts then ordered a milkshake and cake, the staff member informed us it would be cheaper to do it as afternoon tea and with that we got six pieces of cake each and a milkshake in a teapot!! It was great!!

I hired the room for a hen party, Lydia & staff were fantastic, really helpful and the place itself was perfect for the theme I'd planned. I could arrange things as I needed which was fantastic. The tea and cakes available we're delicious and when a guest had a dietry need it wasn't a problem at all. All in all a perfect venue and made the day truly special. Thank you Lydia.

Standard of cakes were disappointing for a cake shop. 4 year olds could make the cakes that were on offer and there was a small variety. The place was rather dirty so it could have done with a clean. Overall I was somewhat disappointed with my visit, however staff were kind and the clubs on offer were a good idea.

My first visit with the kids to lydias was a bit late in the day so the lack of choice and staleness of cake was maybe a tiny bit acceptable, until we noticed a fresh batch of cupcakes set aside for later on! We didnt really fancy going back but when a family gathering was arranged there we decided our first visit must've been a bad day as people only have good things to say. Well, maybe we have brought the children up to be selective but when a four year old leaves a cupcake I dont think it's a good reflection on the baker! I had to agree though - coffee was in a minute cup, acceptable if an expresso but not a latte, there was a smidgen of cream cheese for a bagel I purchased and when I asked for more my answer was they had run out - no alternative or reduction in cost offered. Again the cakes were stale and dry and only two to choose from. I dont think this team are either professional nor creative - their photos look great but I have never witnessed anything even slightly appealing to eye or tastebuds. Too much competition on Newland to ever return here again.

Had a groupon for Lydia's, which was for a hot drink for two and a selection of 12 taster cakes. I thought the p!ace looked a bit shabby as I first walked in, it looked like it could do with a clean. The wooden table we sat at was stained with tea stains. The lady who served us was helpful. I enjoyed a lovely pot of tea and my nephew had a hot chocolate he said was delicious. The taster cakes included chocolate Brownie, white chocolate brownie - which was really nice, lemon drizzle cake which was lovely, and some really nice chocolate and coconut flapjack. All of the cakes were moist and tasty, and we really enjoyed them. I would go back here again, due the delicious cakes we tried.

Myself and my friend went for the groupon and after seeing the mixed reviews I was very apprehensive but I didn't need to be because it was great! The two girls serving were really friendly and the cakes we had were yummy, especially the lemon drizzle and the ginger, lime and toffee both were really moist. The groupon included any drink and a platter of 6 good sized pieces of cake each which we struggled to finish but because they were so yummy we ate every last crumb! It was nice and quiet when we arrived on a misereable Saturday morning and we stayed for a good two hours. The prices of the cake without the groupon were really reasonable all around £2 for a big piece of cake and we will definitely be going back. Contrary to other reviews we found the cakes to all be very moist and the only thing I can think when people say it is dirty is that the tables have coffee stains on but this is after being cleaned, everything else was spotless.

really bad "taster cakes" groupon offer... all dried up pieces of slab cake... no cup cakes, plenty on the counter.... one of these cut into four would have been welcomed..Table dirty, dried up tea stains etc. We had a tea pot, which should have been thrown away ages ago, cracked spout, awful.. These groupons are surposed to give an insight into these cafes, and what to expect.... Will not be coming here again, very dirty, and very poor food, maybe better foodwise, if you"re not on a groupon....

I had heard great things about Lydia's cake away so was excited to go. I went with some family members for an afternoon treat. I was really disappointed when we got there. Our table was stained and although may well have just been cleaned, looked dirty. The floor, both shop front and behind the counter was absolutely grafted and the baby changing facilities were nothing more than a changing mat on the toilet floor (!) with no dedicated nappy bin (there was a small bin by the side of the toilet but it wasn't clear if this was for nappies, sanitary waste or other rubbish). I was quite shocked at this as they run a child friendly establishment and I heard they do 'baby & me' one day a week. The cakes arrived, presented beautifully but a couple of the choices were a bit on the dry side. I can see the potential in the place but they should concentrate more on the basics- decoration, cleanliness etc to retain customers. I certainly won't be going back.

A lovely place to unwind and chill. We had a groupon and it was worth it , when I rung to book I mentioned that hubby was gluten free no problem at all he had a good selection on his plate which was a treat as there is not much choice at local stores. I took a couple of my cakes homes as they were quite filling again a good selection to choose from. Pleasant atmosphere , relaxing and very clean . Will be visiting again

Visited with my sister for a birthday treat for my birthday today & my sisters tomorrow. On entering I was a bit dubious about staying because it looks a dirty place. However we had bought a Groupon so stayed. My sister went to the ladies & i waited at the counter deciding on my drink. Whilst stood there I noticed some of the cakes was taken out a large storage box. I did not think this looked hygienic, we then sat down & the cakes where brought over, it was a selection of 12 cakes the Groupon said, well it was 12 portions. Some where cupcakes cut in half. Myself & my sister both agreed that the cakes where dry & left half of them. A member of staff looked over whilst we was leaving & must have seen we left half of them but never asked if we had enjoyed our visit. My sister said the toilets where disgusting. I would not recommend this place & would never visit again.

Lydia's Cakeaway is a quiet nirvana of baked goods that offers all who enter an unaffected haven in which to enjoy a variety of delectable, home-baked goods. This fine establishment is palate paradise! More than simply superlative sweet treats, the coffee is the best on Newland Avenue. The price is right, the cakes are great and the service is courteous. The perfect place for family fun, student revision and social situations. The shop's film nights make for a relaxed evening night in and is just one example of many events the shop seems to host. I have thoroughly enjoyed my visits.

Despite living in Hessle, I always travel into hull to Lydia's CakeAway to grab a slice (or slices, who am I kidding?) of Lydia’s delicious homemade cakes because they are the best on offer with generous portions. The addition of hot puddings is particularly pleasing to my taste buds. I would recommend this café to anyone, even if the cafe isn’t busy (as a misleading previous review stated) the staff are always so chatty, friendly and welcoming, it just isn’t an issue. The event the cafe offer are also great, my favourite at the minute is the monthly games and weekly film night. So to some up, what are you waiting for? Get yourself there and treat your taste buds!

After traipsing around Hull for a dog friendly pub I found this gem. It was quite busy for a Thursday lunchtime but my two well behaved dogs were more than welcomed. The barman got them some water and a dog biscuit each. I enjoyed a long cold Erdinger too. Would have stayed for more if I hadn’t wasted my time looking for such a pub.
