Lussmanns - Hertford in East Hertfordshire

Once seated we waited approximately 20 minutes and no one came to us during that time with a menu. We had to ask in the end. The starters were small and not particularly special. The main meals were disappointing too. We have been before and the service and food were very good, so on this occasion we felt very disappointed. Also the wine is overpriced. We ordered a bottle for £35 and it was average quality.

Excellent food with a good selection, but not overwhelming, & focus on sustainability. Pleasant, friendly & efficient service. Highly recommended.

We had a wonderful experience today for my mum’s birthday celebration. The staff were all very friendly and attentive. The food was very good and everyone enjoyed their meal very much. The restaurant itself was tastefully decorated and very clean. We will definitely be returning.

Staff very helpful, polite and attentive. Food was very good on the whole especially the crab linguine although portions weren't huge. Although we didn't avail of it, the set menu was very good value. Would love to see a Sunday roast on this menu. Would definitely increase footfall too. Only gripe would be that there is no skimmed (or even semi-skimmed) milk for the tea and crumble, whilst really amazing flavours, needs more 'crumble'. Overall, would recommend.

Loved this restaurant. Wonderful staff in particular Tina & Tabatha. The food was great and very fresh and flavorful. Particularly loved the shepherds pie and soup. Highly recommend.

Although this restaurant gets 5* across the board, its service really stands out. It’s so nice post-pandemic to go to a restaurant (or anywhere for that matter) and feel like you’re the most important person in the place. Customer service has trended downwards for years, but at Lussmanns it feels like there is great emphasis on you as a customer. Take note!

Food was excellent and staff were friendly and helpful, albeit a little stretched due to how busy the restaurant was. My steak and frites was cooked perfectly and my wife’s shepherds pie likewise, and her chocolate mousse and my cheeseboard were also delicious. We will definitely visit again if ever in the neighbourhood.

Always a great experience coming to Lussmans in Hertford. Great service from the staff and always greeted with a smile. Food arrives piping hot and delicious. We shared a bottle of the rose picpoul. 2 of had the great value set menu, one had the a la carte. We all had an enjoyable lunch.

We enjoyed a quiet meal cooked and delivered very well. Service was attentive but just a tad slow due to just a couple of staff working. Overall a nice evening and well worth a visit and in our case we will return.

We had a fabulous dinner at Lussmanns Hertford last week. The burgers were excellent, and the staff was great - really made us feel welcome. We look forward to our next visit!

The new autumn meal is quite lovely. The halibut over cream spinach and tomato/tiny shrimp topper was light and delicious! The chicken schnitzel w/ chili linguine was perfectly prepared. Both dishes served piping hot. Save room for dessert - the orange crème brûlée was fabulous. Service was excellent! Thank you for a wonderful evening!

Cannot fault the team or the food. On arrival very well greeted, offered water and waited for all table members to arrive, was in a rush as due to go to the theatre, the staff accommodated this really well. Very helpful, polite and attentive. The food was delicious offering just the right amount of choice and good portion sizes. Ambience was lovely and the environment was comfortable. Will definitely come back.

Easily the best restaurant in Hertford - delightful staff, consistently excellent food and a really nice atmosphere. My wife and I usually treat ourselves to Cornish sole and the cafe de Paris butter is delicious. If you have never been you are in for a treat!

Eaten at Lussmanns several times before but sadly disappointed this time. Service was inattentive and slow (despite plenty of serving staff around and the restaurant not being full). Waited nearly half an hour for our first drink. Starters were good but the pork chop special had been somewhat over-enthusiastically grilled (bits of it burnt and bitter) and my mackerel main course with salsa verde was truly disappointing. Mackerel was soggy rather than nicely grilled (and mackerel is really an easy fish to cook, not sure what the chef did to the poor fish to make it so bland and tasteless). Salsa verde had no flavour and was blended into a pulp smeared onto the fish - tasted like the main ingredient was actually spinach (which has no business being in salsa verde other than to cheaply bulk it out)? Side of steamed veg was an unattractive bowl of mixed up chopped veg, so heavily covered in pepper it was quite inedible. Desserts OK but unremarkable. No one asked us at any point if we’d enjoyed our supper or I would have given this feedback last night. In the event I decided not to bother, as no one seemed to care anyway. A shame - have had lovely meals there before.

Although we are great Lussmans fans we were slightly disappointed with our meal Saturday. Excellent starters with crunchy sardines and delicious ham terrine. However, my partner's Harissa Cauliflower Florets was a bit of a 'gloopy mess' as she described it. The cauliflower was mushy, the rest of the dish seemed to be swimming with olive oil and pesto, could not taste the hummus and overall was disappointing. My trout was delicious, although for some reason I was expecting a whole small trout, the piece of trout in the dish was very tasty. Overall a typical Lussman's meal, and we can't wait to try out the new Woburn restaurant.

Gorgeous place with fantastic ambiance. Our waitress was wonderful and very helpful with all of our questions — she even let us order some bread & butter that wasn’t on the menu. Food was pretty good. My friend loved her pasta alla Norma, but the cheeseburger was just okay and probably not worth the 18 pounds. Overall it was nice, not the best place I’ve ever been but wouldn’t complain about going back.

Food was mostly very good. Olives and bread were served at the same time as the starter; 45 minutes after being seated. Four of the five dishes were very good. Eton mess not recommended. Large volume of whipped cream with very few pieces of strawberry. The meringue was harder to find than the strawberry.

The change to a late Summer menu nearly caught us out - cold soup has never been a favourite - but the overall menu quality etc just about worked out. The team remained as friendly and engaging as ever, so a really nice evening, thanks.

Not only were all three meals totally delicious and the ambience perfect for conversation, myself and my two friends were all mightily impressed with the service we received. Waited on by an exceedingly personable young lady, our meal was served with a smile and in a very capable manner. This was my second visit to Lussman’s this week. The food was as good as ever. However, service was not up to the usual standard. These were the issues… We had to request water twice. Service was slow. Chips arrived lukewarm so had to be changed. Vegetables came late and only when staff was reminded. We left before dessert and coffee which we normally have.

As always my visit to Hertford Lussman’s was a treat. The trout and accompaniments was superb. It wasn’t quite as perfect as the last time I had it. I suggest marginally less cooking time - but it was still great. My co-diner had the day’s special - pork on the bone which was perfect. The delightful Eton mess was shared but we couldn’t quite finish it all. Sorry to bring up the question of sparkling wine again. I’m sure I’m not alone in enjoying a glass of fizz before eating. However, only two are available by the glass - one at £7 (Prosecco) and the pink at £14+. May there be a third choice with a price between the two maybe..? Chapel Down or one of the other fabulous British fizzes?

An excellent evening, very good food with enough vegan choice, and a great bottle of wine. So pleased to see Ivan there whose service is always excellent. Staff seemed to be on the ball. Very good ambience overall. Will return soon.

Excellent food & service. Had the special pork chop which was excellent although don't be fooled by the description of potatoes on top - they're chip sticks. Order chips you won't regret it - they are spot on. Cheese board was great. Not sure what else to say.

My wife and I both had the set lunch: We both had Cornish sole, her dessert was chocolate mousse while I had the new menu Eton mess. Happy to recommend every item - service was good although we had to wait 30 minutes for the fish to be cooked. Lussmanns’s is our number one choice for dining in Hertford.

Return visitor to Lussmanns for me but first visit with my wife. Amazing food as always and great friendly. Really loved the pineapple carpaccio for dessert, so refreshing and great finish to the beautiful food.

Perfect Friday night fish ‘n’ chips as always. Far too many chips though. I’m still missing the large chips and suggest that these return! It’s what gave the Friday night treat the Lussmanns special touch. We were so full that we, unusually, could not find space for a wonderful Lussman’s dessert. I hope the Highgate restaurant is going well and hope that it’s possible for a South Kensington branch to follow soon!

Went here for our wedding anniversary and whilst most of the food was tasty, we felt certain dishes were overpriced. I had a pork chop with a nice glaze/sauce for £22 but then had to order a bowl of veg (which was small) for £5 so in total my main came to £27 whereas a steak and fries was £23 so a little disappointing for value for money. Our bill took 20 minutes to come through and although the automatic service charge was removed, we came away a little disappointed

We experienced the set menu and both agreed that it's fantastic value for money. Lovely way to spend a couple of hours eating and drinking well. Service was excellent as always.

We have been to Lussmanns before , and never had a bad experience, the table was great , food excellent and the young lady who served our table was outstanding, always friendly and with a smile. As I say , never had a bad experience , and shall continue to use as our go-to restaurant , and have no hesitation in recommending as a great place to dine. Thank you

Went lunchtime with friends and could not fault anything. The lunchtime special offers value for money. Service was friendly and efficient There was no rush so could sit and chat. A great experience.

We ordered some bread and olives, starters and a main. It felt like we were in an out in 45 minutes, rushed out so they could set the table again. The starter arrived before the bread and olives, we then cancelled the bread and olives. As soon as we’d finished the starter, the mains were served. Too rushed. Food was ok, nothing special. Staff polite and well mannered. It’s a canteen essentially

I love Lussman's the food is always excellent and the service is terrific. The ambience is gentle and fairly quiet when I've been, allowing conversation to be heard as well providing sufficient space between tables for privacy. My only gripe is that the air conditioning can be quite a cold blast on your shoulders/neck so take a wrap. Our waiter did his very best to turn it down, but it went up again in spite of his best efforts. It won't stop me going - I will learn to take a wrap!!! I just wish I didn't need to.

Nice venue , had a lovely table in window . Young boy served very pleasant and attentive . 3 diners of which 2 are from the weekday set menu both having the fish cake Starters didn’t grab us so we had mains and dessert. I should also mention we purchased a £75 bottle of chapel down wine . Unfortunately towards the end of the meal my friend suddenly felt her mouth and said oh god what’s that thinking maybe a bone but it was part of an elastic band ! We showed it to the manageress ( I presume) who then came back with feedback from the chef who said all elastic bands in the kitchen are blue . We kind of felt like we were almost being accused of putting it there and before we left we initiated a conversation about this . She was apologetic and did remove 1 set menu cost from the bill and gave us one free glass of wine but it didn’t really seem like they were that devastated about what had happened and personally I would have expected wit 3 dinners they would have waived a 33% discount but we didn’t argue . Overall it was a nice clean restaurant with nice decor but this would definitely put me off going to eat there again I’m afraid - sorry .

Lovely restaurant with great staff. However, the meal I chose was awful! Just a bowl of green leaves and stalks, with no goats cheese to be found! Not up to their usual standards and certainly not worth the price paid. Very disappointed indeed, sadly.

I had trout for the main course which was absolutely superb! Compliments to the marvellous chef. The desserts, as always, were divine. Having just travelled twice to Italy in recent weeks, where the food was invariably excellent, I’d rate our meals last night in Lussman’s as more than equal to them. Brilliant service, competent and friendly staff. Lussman’s, Hertford remains the best local restaurant!

We visited for lunch on a Saturday and the restaurant wasn't very busy. We decided to go for the 3 course set menu as it seemed very good value at £23.95. We were glad we did as every dish was delicious and well cooked and the portions were also very reasonable. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. Overall a really good experience and I would definitely recommend/return again.

Menu is good, the staff are good but there did not seem enough of them leading to quite long waits to place orders etc.

Staff here were amazing, but unfortunately lots of issues with food so was clearly something happening in kitchen as multiple tables sent food back. I was expecting more based on the reviews, but felt food was average. Maybe it was an off night…

Disappointing evening which surprised us. Poor and very slow service. Side dishes missing. Had to get up and go to find waiting staff who were lovely as always but definitely not lussmans usual standard. Hope the refurb and giving over tables for extended bar hasn’t spoiled this excellent restaurant. Need to go back to go back to check this isn’t the new norm.

I am a regular customer at Lussmanns Hertford of having never posted a review before. The menu changes four times a year, spring ,summer, autumn and winter. It always has a good selection of meat and fish dishes. The food is always delicious and perfectly presented. Restart always pleasant and efficient add and manage rules come in check everything is OK. Price wise you there is a fixed price menu with numerous choices from the a la carte menu. Overall it is an excellent restaurant hence the reason I am a regular customer

We ate at Lussmanns for the first time in June and planned to eat at another restaurant the next night. We were so impressed by everything that Lussmanns has to offer we returned the following evening and were not disappointed. We just wish they would open a branch closer to us in West Sussex so we don't have to traverse the M25 for an excellent meal in good surroundings.

Exceptional service as per usual. This season’s menu is a right treat! The Caesar salad in particular was an incredible blend of high quality ingredients, leading to an unforgettable dish. I’ll be sure to have that on my next visit! Only downside was the removal of onion rings from the sides. Bring them back! They’re outstanding and go with so many of the classics you’ve retained.

Lovely meal, again as we have been here a few times now. It was a very warm day and so the restaurant was a bit warm (they could possibly have left the main door open?) but overall still a very nice place to enjoy lunch. The fish was cooked perfectly although the new potatoes were a bit waxy - but nothing to spoil the meal. Not a cheap lunch date but definitely value for what we had. Will visit again

Good quality food. Service was good although sometimes a little slow as there were only two waiters working over the lunch period.

Went here today. They added some random charges to our bill, we asked them to take them off which they did. And then later after we had left, we realised they had over charged us again when we paid. We paid more than our bill had come to. Poor selection of food as well. Won't be going again.

Food excellent. Service sadly just adequate. We didn’t have all the cutlery. Wasn’t asked if we wanted more wine or drinks. Weren’t even offered coffee after our three coffees. An enjoyable evening and great food. Just as shame the service was lacklustre and lazy.

Very aesthetically pleasing restaurant, felt very modern with cosy Tiffany lamps. Staff were very friendly, took our jackets which was a nice touch. Food was lovely, we had crab starter, trout and blade of beef for main which was very good, traditional food. Desserts were great too - cheesecake and thyme sponge. We will be back. Was a little more expensive than we thought, but we did get pricey bottle of wine and service included, which is good.

We had lunch, which was very good, when it arrived. Delays in the kitchen due to the large parties. There was a wedding party being held there and another large group who were very noisy. We asked to be moved as our party could not converse easily.
