A Wonderful Stay with Excellent Hospitality I recently stayed at the Lower Load Inn campsite and had an absolutely fantastic experience. The pub atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff were incredibly caring and accommodating, making sure every guest felt welcome. The campsite itself was well-maintained, and the proximity to the pub made it easy to relax and enjoy a meal or drink. I highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for a peaceful getaway with great service. I’ll definitely be returning!

We went for the plated, carvery Sunday lunch and I had the beef version, and my partner had the vegetable version as she is a vegetarian…it was all round excellent, at least 6 sorts of potatoes and veg were provided to share, big portions, very reasonable price, the gravy was like my mother’s and the staff and service were excellent friendly and effective and the bar itself had a nice ambience with plenty of beer choices. Close parking aplenty, dog friendly, 20m from the river with some nice walking close by. A fair amount of night entertainment available too.

We spent our first outing this year in the caravan on the designated site next to the river. This is a perfect spot to relax and emerse in nature. The historic pub on site is a beautiful old building with a lovely atmosphere. Sam, the proprietor, and her staff are wonderful and do everything to make sure your stay is enjoyable. The food is great pub fare and the Sunday carvery is excellent. Booking this is advisable as it's well attended. The setting is perfect. We visit as often as we can. Historic Tewkesbury is on the doorstep as are the Cotswolds. The Lode is a great base for touring these areas or just sitting back to recharge your batteries in the lovely surroundings, and spending the evenings in the friendly pub with a few glasses of whatever takes your fancy. We loved our visit to this pub and had a swim in the river, which was amazing although a few people had said it was too polluted these days. We took appropriate precautions like not swallowing it and showering in the campsite makeshift showers immediately afterwards. The interior of the pub was interesting and quirky although we called during the recent heatwave so everyone was outdoors on benches overlooking the river. You do need to watch out for the swans. The food was basic but inexpensive. Definitely worth a visit. We walked from Tewkesbury mainly along the river.

We booked a table of 15 for Sunday lunch on 25/8/19. We advised the person we booked with that we were a group of mainly vegetarians and vegans. It was a very busy day and there seemed to be a lot of confusion, although the bar staff seemed to be helpful and friendly. the problem came when we tried to get our nut roast carvery from the chef. Firstly, the chef seemed very angry that we had ordered 5 nut roasts in total and told us we "would have to wait!" as he was "very busy". I waited around and hour for my order. The bar staff were very apologetic for our wait and the confusion with our order. What was most upsetting was when one of our group asked the chef if the stuffing was vegan he stated "how should I know" he was told that he should know what was in the products he was preparing. He then stated that veganism was a "fad" and that he was not bothered about catering for it as most people ate meat. I was not going to write this review. However after hearing today the tragic news about a young man dying from a dairy allergy, because a restaurant did not know that there was buttermilk in the burger he ordered. I felt that it was important that this chef is retrained to be aware of the ingredients in the products he is serving as it is not just vegans who have concerns about ingredients but also people with life threatening allergies.

We camped next door for 5 days and were looking forward to spending lots of time and money during our stay. On our first visit we were told they didn't do tabs (on another visit they were doing them for other people), they were also catering for a wedding which meant we were asked to moved from any of the lawns. We ended up leaving as there weren't enough staff to serve everyone and the queue was long. The following day we decided to give it another go, but they were all running around for another wedding reception and again, seemed to neglect the customers as there weren't enough staff for both. On our final day, we were at last treated to the spectacular view of the river as the tipi was removed. The pub is located in a great spot with lots of seating (when there's not a wedding on). We had lunch and were planning to have dinner later too as it was the end of our stay. When my husband went to order a dessert and asked for custard and ice cream, he was told he could not have this. Despite offering to play an additional amount, the girl behind the bar refused. Another staff member said there was no reason for her refusing and they will of course do this for us. By then, my hubby was so irate that we left and did not return. We also saw advertised that the pub had a beer and cider festival and music but all this was not highlighted and it seemed the weddings were more of a priority.I understand that these functions are the bread and butter of the pub but they should hire additional staff for these events and train some of the staff they already have in customer service.

Looks idyllic because it’s next to the river and should be but it’s like a shanty town built of old tatty caravans. There was a jam packed skip full of rubbish waiting to be emptied which stank in the hot weather. Free range dogs roaming around and pooing all over. Food was passable and a good range of beer. It just feels like it has lost its way. They offer weddings but you’d have to be pretty desperate to get married here.

We were advised to reserve a table as there was live music in bar. We were put right in corner where the band were. The bar staff as always were friendly and we ordered dinner. My friends meals were good, a doggy box was provided for some unfinished food. Sadly my fish pie was very disappointing. I did eat it but think I should have said something. The potato topping was grey. The fish pie was hot but did not tsdye fresh and the bread tasted a bit stale. Such a shame the rest of our meals and time there was good. Maybe we hit on a bad day as our friends had enjoyed Sunday lunch here in the past. However...describing itself as “vegetarian friendly “ on here seems a bit of a stretch. When asked super politely (after being very rude to us) what was the best thing to do while waiting for a nut roast, the server muttered that he knew what he’d like to tell vegetarians to do. It seems they don’t specialise in meat either as the beef looked like shoe leather and the turkey was dry and over cooked. One gravy fits all apparently.Plenty of choice of vegetables but all soggy and everything cold. The only thing not overdone was the hospitality. Yes it’s cheap but it’s not cheerful so give it a wide berth despite the lovely setting.

This was somewhere we were looking forward to trying out. Unfortunately we were disappointed. The table we were seated at was right in a bad draft. We were cold. On the table next to us, a cat was sleeping on a chair which was a bit odd as we were seated in the restaurant. One of the lasagned wad welded to the dish, literally burnt black on the bottom and inedible (this was refunded). The steak on all 3 mixed grills was very well done when medium rare was requested. Service was very slow. Also watch out for low beams. My husband cracked his head really hard on the way out.

The food arrived promptly but unfortunately the BLT Baguette was very over cooked to the extent it couldn't be eaten and the chilli jacket potato could have done with a decent portion of chilli. I did inform the friendly staff who apologised and offered a refund. With a bit of attention to detail the meals should not of left the kitchen. Disappointed but it won't put us off returning.

I booked a table for three on the website on Friday , but on Saturday,we learned that one person could not join us, Today Sunday 26/10/24 we were due to visit this pub at 1pm for lunch, however, at the last moment another person joined us and brought a VERY large dog, I phoned just before we left to travel to the pub , and asked if we could change from the dining room to the bar , as we were bringing a dog, The lady on the phone was VeRY helpful, and said she would change the booking for us, We arrived and were shown to table 18, in the bar, a perfect table for us as it was in the corner by the window, so the dog had plenty of room, We orderd food and drinks, and before the food arrived, a bowl of water was brought to us for the dog, The food arrived quickly, and was very nice and very reasonably priced, Later as we had finished, a kind lady brought some sausages over for the dog to eat, I have often eaten at this pub and NEVER been disappointed

Popped in for a pint and a bowl of chips. Nice place with lovely, friendly staff. Dog friendly too. Rated it based on what we had, so don't take this as an indication of the general quality of their meals. Would definitely return.

Nice country pub, good selection of beers, ales, ciders and lagers. Quite pricey though. Too expensive to use as a local.
