Really lovely food and the staff couldn’t have been nicer. Trouble was it’s quite expensive and the portion sizes are small!

¡Qué restaurante tan increíble! Esta fue nuestra primera visita a Los Moros. Nos apetecía algo un poco diferente y basándonos en las excelentes críticas en TripAdvisor, pensamos en darle una oportunidad. El ambiente es encantador. Relajado, pero con una intensidad clara en la cocina abierta que notas al entrar por la puerta. Y pronto fue evidente por qué. El menú es pequeño, pero perfectamente formado, lo que permite a la cocina centrarse en cada plato tan bien. Es uno de esos menús en los que es difícil no pasarse de orden ya que todo sonaba delicioso. Luchamos duro para no hacerlo y pedimos 6 platos. Cordero, tagiene, gambas, hummus y mejilla de res. Cada plato era sublime. Perfectamente cocinado, sazonado y muy bien presentado, pero sin alborotos innecesarios. El servicio fue atento pero no OTT, pidiendo una noche muy relajante, muy agradable. Muy recomendable

Maravilloso lugar para comer! ¡Tenía el mejor hummus! Tengo los platos pequeños almuerzo: hummus, espinacas y feta bourek, y pollo frito. ¡Fue maravilloso! La espinaca y feta bourek era algo que nunca había probado, pero terminó amando! ¡Tenía un pastel de queso de rosas de frambuesa de postre y sabía como si estuviera comiendo rosas! Muy delicioso y un postre único. El servicio fue genial y muy rápido! El interior también es hermoso con azulejos y luminarias encantadoras.

The food tastes good but is overpriced for small plates, which you are expected to share. No serving spoons are provided and there is no bread on the table (which would be useful to mop up sauces). Be aware you may still be hungry when you leave the restaurant.

Amazing lunch. We had 6 small plates between 2 of us, and everything was delicious - especially the haddock croquettes, feta & spinach borek, and couscous & squash salad. Good service and reasonable prices

Visitamos recientemente por mi cumpleaños. El restaurante era encantador, buena comida y personal amable. La coliflor crujiente sabía encantador, pero no era crujiente desafortunadamente. Las salchichas picantes de cordero eran preciosas, aunque solo 3 para dos de nosotros, 4 salchichas sería mejor! Los langostinos al ajo y al chile estaban súper (¡necesitábamos pan para trapear la sabrosa salsa!) compartimos las mejillas de res que de nuevo estaba preciosa. Tenemos que volver el próximo verano, ya que el patio exterior parece encantador para sentarse. El único inconveniente en invierno sería visitar los baños que se encuentran en el patio, necesitarían un abrigo! Pero no dejes que eso desanime a nadie, esto se debe a la disposición del edificio antiguo que realmente no se puede cambiar.

A fantastic restaurant. The menu descriptions do not do the dishes justice. We weren't sure what to expect but the modern take and presentation of traditional flavours and ingredients was exceptional. The best meal we have had for some time, and the prices were incredibly good value too. I would recommend all try this gem of a restaurant.

Fabulous find! We went in June and loved the food. Chef was lovely and really grateful for our feedback. Would definitely recommend. Would go back tomorrow if we lived closer

The food was full of flavour and delicious. Worth a visit! There is also an upstairs sitting area. The cheesecake topped off or delicious dinner.

Amazing dishes: hummus, batata hara, za’atar & buttermilk fried chicken. The crispy cauliflower & chicken tagine were good. The grilled octopus & the chilli garlic prawns were bland. The raspberry and rose cheesecake was the best - definitely a must have. The staff needed to communicate better how the dishes sizes and presentation would be and should mention that plates are of different sizes- all the dishes came under “plates” in the menu so that’s a bit misleading- maybe segregate small and big plates! And maybe say that it’s somehow a tapas kind of dishes. We wanted to order the lamb and beef too, but unfortunately booth dishes were cooked with alcohol. The chef was great to talk to.

An excellent lunch. I had a really nice anchovy starter. My main was ox cheek - absolutely lovely. I also had a nice pale ale brewed in their name.

I love this place! The food is the best I’ve tasted in a long time, each dish was beautifully presented and tasted divine. The 2 vegetarians in our party were very happy and had plenty of options to choose from. The beef cheeks, lamb stew, crispy cauliflower and spinach & feta parcels were incredible. Unplanned stop on day trip. Had the falafel wrap with loads of delicious salad things included. Excellent value - packed full of falafels and really tasty. Really enjoyed it! Thank you

Food is absolutely delicious, the chicken harissa wrap is unbelievably good. Service was fast, very happy indeed.

Food good but not worth the hype. For a similar price, Forage or even Ambiente is better. If you don't ming spending a bit more, Skosh is a good choice.

Ate here for the 3rd (and final) time over the weekend. It has been consistently poor. Overall, the food was bland. Crispy cauliflower was soggy, overcooked and under seasoned. No dish stood out and we ended up leaving a lot of it. I asked the waiter if the house wine was dry and his response was 'no idea'. I had to keep asking for spoons to serve the food from the dishes and he would only bring out 1 at a time. Painfully bad service. It baffles me how the restaurant gets such good reviews, there are loads of restaurants in York of much better quality.

Highly recommended place to explore in York! We went for dinner and ordered the octopus dish and the braised beef cheek. Both dishes were full of flavour- the octopus tender and the beef melting in your mouth. The only remark is that they could have added 2-3 potato halves more to the octopus dish since it had a lovely sauce beneath. There were only 3 small potato halves which were really insufficient, especially if you consider it as a sharing dish and that it was on the pricy side. Highly recommended as you will not leave dissatisfied:)

Unbelievable food! It was my birthday and I wanted a reasonably priced, not fancy/ pretentious place to celebrate with my family and Los Moros was the perfect restaurant. Hands down the best place to eat in York, if you want mouth watering, delicious food… look no further! In the photos below we enjoyed the Hummus and flatbread, buttermilk chicken, chilli prawns, aged lamb and a few other amazing dishes!!

It's just okay, imagine ordering a tagine and getting a chicken leg in lemon sauce and some boiled potatoes, it's not really a tagine it is? The flavours were nice but just don't lie about what the food actually is. I should have saved my money on a Tesco meal deal 😭

The staff were friendly and the food was delicious. I'd go back when I'm next in York.

Amazing food and service and Great restaurant.

We popped in for a quick 3 plate tapas lunch and it was DELICIOUS! We ate falafel, crispy cauliflower and batata habas and the 3 small plates were enough for us both. Lovely place and very good service. The batata habas were particularly excellent!

Los Moros is unquestionably the most underrated restaurant in York. Nestled in the corner of Grape Lane, next door to Phranakhon, you could easily miss it. The exterior has an intriguing design. It imitates blue tiles, like those you see in buildings around the Mediterranean. The interior continues with this theme, with intricately painted bowls and babouche slippers hanging on the walls. My one and only gripe with Los Moros is that the toilets are outside the restaurant. You have to go outside and down a sort of passageway, which isn't a problem in summer, but during winter, it can be quite cold. Anyway, back onto the positives... Los Moros has a very small menu, which I think is the sign of a truly good restaurant. They're not trying too hard to please everyone by offering a plethora of different dishes. They know exactly what they do well, and they focus on doing it exceptionally. The menu has changed since my last visit, but when I ate at Los Moros, I ordered two things: 1) Hummus and Sourdough Flatbread Now, before I went to Los Moros, I had a complete and utter disdain for hummus. I found it cold, claggy, and overall, just an unpleasant thing to eat. However, the hummus here converted me. It included roasted chickpeas, rose harissa, and pine nuts. And it was fantastic! Accompanied by their warm sourdough flatbread, I would say that it's probably the best appetiser I've ever had. Is bread in a restaurant classed as an appetiser? Someone let me know, please. 2) Slow Roasted Ox Cheek with Gouda Mash and Pickled Red Onion I almost couldn't believe that this was a North African dish when I tried it. I'm still left wondering if it's been anglicised to cater for our delicate British taste buds. But regardless of the dish's origin, it was absolutely delicious. Essentially, it was slow-cooked beef with cheesy mash. As a country boy from Yorkshire, it felt almost nostalgic to me. It was warm, stodgy, and covered in gravy. It's fair to say that North African food gets this Yorkshireman's stamp of approval. So, get some friends together after work and head on down to Grape Lane. You won't be disappointed.

I have been eating here ever since Los Moros opened as a restaurant five years ago. Tarek not only owns it but clearly loves excellent and beautiful food in a delightful Algerian style setting. York has plenty of good restaurants but this must be one of the best. I had the ox cheek and the sauce was out of this world. Service is warm and gently efficient and I cannot praise it enough.

Had an absolutely beautiful meal here last night. We both opted for a full plate rather than the small plates they also offer. The food was incredible. I had the chicken tagine and it was delicious, fragrant, delicate and flavoursome. The chocolate and coffee mousse was like nothing I'd had before. This is the best food I've had in York and the service was also excellent. Well worth the money and will definitely be back.

Always a great place to eat some Middle Eastern inspired delicacies

We had high hopes for Los Moros and we were not disappointed. It was our first visit and we received a warm welcome on a rather dreary day, having been directed to the restaurant by a friendly local in the market."I like it- and I'm very picky". The small plate of hummous with Harissa, chilli and pine nuts was shared since neither of us are big eaters and this was a good decision. We followed it up with large plates of hake and ox cheek, each a jewel in edible form. We took a long time to eat every morsel, stopping frequently to say "try this" or "I really like this".Ginger ale and malbec were as anticipated but we still managed to find room for the highly praised peach cigars before two well chosen teas. Service was friendly, helpful and discreet- just right for the general atmosphere at 1.30pm just a couple of yards from the very busy school holiday York drizzle. A most reasonable £70 covered the bill.

We went for a late lunch and the atmosphere was welcoming and the aromas exiting. We ordered 2 small plated and a large plate each. My large plate was the Ox cheek witch was succulent and deeply flavourful with an excellent sauce. As for small plates I had the Hummus witch was perfectly creamy and the Butterflied Sardines witch were both delicate and vibrant. customer service was immaculate the friendly staff made dinning here a delight. Food 5/5, customer service 5/5.

6 STARS. Wish it were possible....here it is deserved. My favourite restaurants are ones that are focused on a particular region with a chef who knows it but can play upon it and has amazing food at a fair but reasonable cost. Tariq at Los Moros is this chef - Algerian dna through the exceptional food. Moreover, he is supported by an amazing team of servers who are attentive, friendly, knowledgeable, and great at their jobs. OK- the restaurant is on two floors, so if downstairs looks busy, don't despair. At weekends, I'm guessing booking would be advisable. I went on a Wednesday, and it was very busy.....amazing restaurants are. Onto the food - started with the eastern fried chicken. 😋 Juicy strips of chicken 🐔 with a crispy flavoured coating, topped with sumac, and aromatic mayonaise-consistency sauce. Sausages 🌭 - los moros merguez- succulent lamb combined with a cucumber cacik🥒, rather like tartae sauce almost, with urfa🌶 chili oil. They sell these at the nearby market. Unreal. The must have item on the menu. I then had the special, which was a duck🦆 confit, and Algerian bean stew. Sublime. Finally, as I'd bought a bottle of delicious Lebanese wine,🍷 I went for the hummus. Stunning. This, as many people will see from my many reviews, ranks up there and certainly meal of the year so far. A superb local and independent restaurant that comes very highly recommended indeed. Thank you very much, and thankfully, I will be back in York for work soon so will see you again! 😊 ❤️

Another wonderful place to eat in York, the chicken starter especially was tender and delicious, we had a variety of the starters for lunch.

A breath of fresh air in the food marketplace - amazing food, small plates, large plates and desserts, and not extortionate prices for decent wine.

After hearing a lot of brilliant reviews about Los Moros, we decided to give it another visit. It’s a wonderful little North African restaurant which offers both small and big plates. Here we have- 🥩 Ox Cheek Tangia ⭐️ 🍗 Eastern Fried Chicken ⭐️ It was difficult to decide which one was our favourite between the EFC & Tangia. The beef was so tender and was a proper homely dish. Whilst the ZFC Chicken was so crispy and came with a lemon mayo which was unreal and so different to any fried chicken we’ve had before 😍 We’re probably giving our visit a 8/10 ⭐️ .We will be back though, as there are plenty of other dishes that we still need to try and the staff were so so friendly, however, we will say it’s pretty spenny!

Incredible food and a nice, chilled atmosphere. I had the cauliflower to start followed by grilled octopus, which was so meaty and delicious. We also shared a really flavorful bottle of malbec alongside our food.

Absolute gorgeousness. Excellent food - incredibly tender eastern chicken; ox cheek that melted on the plate; and a divine rose cheesecake. Service fun and attentive. Highly recommend.

The decor is neither Scandi minimal nor islamic decorative, more a sort of B&Q hybrid. The young people who serve are borderline zombie. And the food, which should be entirely veggie compatible being middle Eastern, is overly acidic and underwhelming. The ox cheek was well executed but it's accompanying cumin Gouda mash was neither one thing nor another. It was disappointing. If you have an 8:45 Saturday night sitting, at least have enough of the menu items left for those covers.

Food was delicious and service was great. We had the merguez, houmous, ox cheek and octopus and were very happy with everything.

In York for the ice trail and found this gorgeous little restaurant by complete chance. They allowed our dog in with us and proceeded to serve us the most amazing meal - delicious, atmospheric, and a fantastic way of finding out more about new cultures. Would definitely recommend this place if you're in York and have some time to spare.

Food was great, chicken tagine was fantastic. Service was terrible. I had to chase food and drinks many times and it is sad to say that considering that food was really good. Disappointing.

Wow the food here was amazing, I was expecting good but not that good, each dish we shared was just stunning, that stunning I can't pick a favourite. The chef and his staff were also brill when we came in and left, that defo added to our enjoyment of the night!

Booked here on a Friday evening and were warmly greeted at the door. The service was alright but when we asked about how much food to order for two of us to share the waitress didn't seem to have an answer. The food was quite good but was incredibly expensive for what you get. For example, we ordered the lamb "large plate" which cost £26 but consisted of 2 pieces of lamb, a mushroom, 2 sprigs of tenderstem broccoli and a couple of tiny blobs of puree. We also ordered the ox cheek large plate which was slightly better value but again the portion was not worth the price. The best part of the meal was definitely the houmous which was really smooth and tasty. A decent meal but would not return.

Lovely place for a light lunch or great dinner. The food is fantastic and good for sharing; the servers are really friendly and the atmosphere is lovely. The outside space at the back is amazing in the summer. I will always be coming back to los moros !

My brother in law has been bringing us here for an on the hoof lunch whilst shopping for all our weekend requirements for many years and the wraps (meaty for me and veggie for the majority of our group) never fail to deliver. The food court seating is often full but the benches at the Minster are near by. Yet to try there new venue but it's on the list for next year's trip North

I had a wrap in the Shambles food market, genuinely one of the best foods I've eaten in any trip I've ever had. Delicious

Really very good. Fried chicken is unbelievably tender, as is the ox cheek to the point it falls apart. Cassoulet is warning and lightly spiced. Chocolate mousse is quite rich and very flavorful. Thoroughly recommend.

cracking little gem of a place, had really excellent selection of small plates, the pil pil prawns were excellent, the Eastern fried chicken was like the classiest fried chicken I've ever eaten. the feta and spinach boureks were the crispiest little morsels. we also had the ox cheek with cumin and gouda mash which was frankly gobsmacking. topped off with a lovely bottle of red it was lovely, immaculate service and a really relaxed atmosphere. cannot recommend highly enough. also incredibly reasonably priced

The food was amazing, the Ox cheek melted in the mouth and the Hake and Dahl was sublimely flavoured. The eastern fried chicken was the BEST fried chicken I have ever had. We shared a portion of the chocolate mouse with cardamom Meringue between two- which was perfect. It was just over £100 for starters, mains and drinks for three people and two puddings- amazing value! The service was fabulous, and the decor was spot on. Cannot recommend enough!

Half empty but incredibly slow service. Expensive and when they say small plates they mean it. The food was good and well cooked. Maybe you're paying a lot for the touristy location, but this place felt very overpriced.

The starters were ok but the octopus was a huge disappointment. It was gritty (or sandy) as if it had not been washed properly. It was also cold. When I told the staff they were uninterested. Honestly, that made my experience even worse.

We were out for my son's 19th Birthday. I'd called to book ahead the week before and had asked if there was something special they could do for my son's birthday. The reply was a bit vague but mentioned something about providing a dessert. We turned up and as we walked through the door someone shouted "Hi" but it wasn't the two girls at the reception area and we had no idea who had.We had no greeting from reception and so we stood for a while waiting to be addressed. We were then asked if we had a booking. No welcome at all and all very mechanical. One girl literally walked to a table and pointed at it and then at some tatty piece of paper on the table which turned out to be a special dish. I nearly walked out there and then! Shocking customer service. No one said anything to us until I asked for some water. We then got some drinks and we ordered. I asked about one of the dishes and the waitress couldn't describe what it was. She described what the shape was.Clearly she knew nothing about the menu. Staff did not seem happy at all. No one smiling or engaging with us. It felt flat. The food was nice however but it is expensive. The fact that it was a birthday had been totally forgotten about. We spent alot on food and drinks and did not leave a tip due to poor service. We decided not to have a dessert and went elsewhere for this. Such a shame as we had been looking forward to it.The food is cooked with care but unfortunately the staff let this place down. This is probably down to lack of experience and training. We will not be returning for that reason.

You can enjoy creative and delicious Moroccan food in the heart of York City. Los Moros is a small restaurant offering a great selection of Levantine dishes with a modern touch. Don't miss the baked hake, chicken tagline or the grilled octopus. And not to mention the colorful desert of fingers with pomegranate, peach reduction and cream foam. Prices are reasonable for the quality you get.

Cosy restaurant with exquisite dishes. Every dish was perfectly cooked and prepared with love, from the hummus and flatbreads through to the Eastern fried chicken and shakshuka. The beef tanjia, in particular, was succulent and bursting with flavour. The gentle warming spice and subtlety of the shakshuka was another highlight of the meal. Service was friendly and personable. Highly recommended!

The best dinner we've had in York, and there has been stiff competition! Lovely space out in the courtyard with heating and blankets (not that we needed them). We had basically all of the sharing plates and they were all delicious. We'll be back soon!

The atmosphere was lovely with spacious tables. We ordered hummus, fried cauliflower as starters and beef cheek tanjia and baked hake for mains. Most dishes were a bit overpriced for their portions and also the hummus and beef were seasoned with too much salt. However overall the food was nice and I especially recommend the hake:)

OK but not good value for money, service OK and vegan options limited. But vegan wine was marked as vegan and staff were knowledgeable about limited options available. I won't go again.

Had a number of small plates for lunch. All were tasty flavorful and interesting. A great view and great service made this a lovely lunch. Highly recommend the muscles and the chicken small plate.

Very nice food but the portion sizes are meagre considering how expensive it is. I don't think 2 pieces of lamb, three florets of tenderstem brocoli and half a mushroom constitutes a "large dish".

Probably my favourite restaurant in York with delicious food and great service. The menu changes often which is great and the people are very friendly. I can’t recommend this place enough!!

A lovely hidden gem in the busy city of York! V pretty & modern interior and friendly service. The food were delicious & well presented!

This evening we had one of our very best meals here - shared cauliflower and hummus (the cauliflower was unlike anything I have had- fried and topped with pomegranate molasses. Absolutely delicious!!) My partner had ox cheeks which came with a really tasty cheesy mash, and I had the aubergine topped with spicy chickpeas. Then we shared the rose and raspberry cheesecake and left very full and happy!! Such a great place- not our first visit and certainly not our last.

Cute place, menu is small but in a good sense that it helps you to choose easier. Recommend the aubergine boat! A bit disappointed on the drinks options though… Desserts are ok, the rose cheesecake is pretty.

I've eaten many times from the Los Moros market stall and the restaurant too in years gone by. Always good but the lunch today was absolutely superb and the menu surprised me. I had stuffed quail and my companion the beef cheeks (see photo). Will be returning again soon. Oh and the espresso was excellent also.

Worked as chef,the owner had not cheffing back ground,dectator no respect for his staff,always looking for staff cause no one can cope with his attitude.

They have a pop-up store in Shambles market and this place is a really good option if you are looking out for wraps. We tried Rose Harissa Chicken Wrap which was delectable and a lovely choice for a happy tummy.

Lovely meal out in York. Pretty location and attractive decor inside. The atmosphere is intimate and warm and the service was attentive and friendly. The food was delicious, we definitely over ordered but still finished everything and enjoyed every bite!

I came here with my boyfriend for valentines dinner, and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. The restaurant was cosy and the staff and guests were all extremely welcoming. The drinks were lovely and the food looked and tasted brilliant. I would definitely recommend Los Moros to anyone looking for a romantic meal in York, as well as food in general. We will certainly be coming back!
