Lord Nelson Pub & Kitchen in Gedling

First time visiting the Nelson for a long time . The service was great even though they were busy and the food was fabulous. We both had the Sunday roast . Really generous portions and we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. We will be back soon . Note - you don’t need to pay for the car parking we weren’t aware of this but they did take it off our bill so at least we know for next time .

Really starting to feel like a nice pub again. The new supervisor Sam was so welcoming and asked us all the right questions, she made a real effort to come and talk to us which is something that had been lacking with previous management. The menu isn’t exactly new but the food is definitely good! Hopefully now with the new management the staff will have the proper training and it can start to feel like a pub again rather than a poorly ran kids club.

Lovely Sunday roast I had lamb and my husband had the half chicken which was huge great service and food back to standard Nelson brilliant

Been here a handful of times for food but was not impressed with our latest visit. We had the Sunday roast, for what you get it is expensive - just 2 small portions of veg and for any extra it is an additional charge. The beef was also extremely fatty and food lukewarm. Service was slow despite it not being full. Was also charged for a large wine even though it was clearly small. Nice enough pub to go for a drink but won’t be in a rush to eat here again.

We are not local to this area, but my partner travels through it for work and wanted to take our kids to the local park nearby (not connected to the pub). We decided to drop by for a quick drink after and sat outside. My partner said the inside of the pub was nice and the beer garden was too, with a small play area for younger kids. I appreciate this review is limited, as we did not eat here, but unfortunately the drink prices have now put us off returning to try food. We paid over £20 for 1 x (on tap) beer, 1 x glass of house white wine and 2 x (small sized) fruit shoots!! The glass of wine being over £9…for a GLASS? (Was the glass included in the price?) I’m not sure if we were accidentally over charged, as I can’t seem to find a drinks menu online and I fully appreciate pubs have to make money…but that is extortionate! Considering their a la carte starters are around £8.50, I really think they need to rethink their drink prices.

This is one of my favourite places even though I’ve only been a couple of times, both times have been exceptional! I had a steak sandwich and it was delicious - homemade bread too! 100% will be returning as I need to try everything on the menu. Only comment I could make is no custard with any dessert!?!? Would deffo be good to have this as option for the custard instead of ice cream lovers

A great place for Sunday Lunch. Food exceptional as were the portion sizes! Clearly a lot of love goes in to the food. Servers were friendly and attentive. Have been before and found it difficult to park, so think the addition of paying for parking (which is then taken off the bill) is an excellent idea. Would highly recommend

At one time during The Nelson’s Moleface era this pub was a great favourite of ours but we gave up on it a couple of years ago when the quality of food and service both went downhill. When we made a return trip for lunch at midday today we were expecting bedlam, it being a sunny Saturday and the last day of Summer. Much to our surprise, the place was as near deserted as any pub I’ve ever seen, weekend or not, and remained so for the duration of our visit. We just kept saying how weird it was. In spite of this, they somehow managed to keep us waiting fully 45 minutes for two orders of butter chicken and a chicken pie with potatoes. When we asked the very young waitress where our food was she looked genuinely bemused by our question. I looked over to the kitchen area and could only see one chef so this may have been the reason for our long wait. When the food finally came it was of a good standard. We decided not to order dessert as we couldn’t countenance another long wait and just asked for three Americanos with cream. Somehow, these were served lukewarm. We’re well used to this with cappuccinos and lates but not a simple coffee. This was a very unsatisfactory experience and we didn’t leave a tip. I can’t remember the last time we felt this was appropriate. At no time did we see any sign of a manager. I suspect the lack of customers today reflects our own experience.

Called in and had a lovely birthday lunch we both had the Sole a really good piece of fish cooked really well. Service was great

We were very disappointed based on past experiences at this restaurant which used to be good, we went for Sunday lunch and we were disappointed in warmed up roast potatoes warmed up Yorkshire pudding,the vegetables should be al dente but these were raw, not cooked at all, the cauliflower cheese at best was watery. Also, the standard of the toilets is disgusting filthy .

Me and my wife came for Sunday lunch, we were greeted at the door by a young lad called Tom who was very friendly and took us to our table. We asked him about the parking and he explained what we needed to do and it was so simple!! We then ordered 2 roast dinners and OMG it was the best food we have put in our mouths, the roast potatoes were to die for and I have never seen a Yorkie so big in my life!! We will definitely be back to enjoy more of the food and soak up some of rays in the best beer garden in the area!! Thank you to all the staff for making the experience so enjoyable!

I went for a business dinner meeting .I parked my car in the patrons only part of the car park where there are no paystations.our bill came to £252 00.I then received a parking fine for £100.I have appealed but as yet I have had no result .I have just received another letter saying if I dont pay by a certain date I will have to pay £170.I have decided to pay and see if my appeal is successful.I will not be going back to the Nelson if it is not sorted out,I rang the Pub up and they said I should have told them my reg number when I entered the pub.Why wasnt I imformed of this by someone.No mention on the web site.

We have visited this place on several occasions and yet again it lived up to the high standards. Even though it was busy the food came out promptly and the service was great. I think the parking is a great idea as previously it’s been a struggle to park and I don’t see why the pub should miss out on customers because of other people parking there.

Love the new beer garden! The kids play area is also great! We came Saturday afternoon and had some drinks, such a lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and quick service. This pub is always a joy when we are here. It’s a shame people have had so much to say about their car park rules when they have done it to help their customers!

The new paint in the toilets make me feel like I’m entering the Chamber of secrets. Couldn’t have picked a worse colour to use. Way too dark and dingey for the place

Food was incredible, can’t complain there. Compliments to the staff, however it would be nice to train your waitresses up in socialising. However the service from staff was shocking, we had our water slammed on the table with no socialising. Didn’t get chance to say how the meal was as we didn’t get asked how it was. When the food was put on the table, we had minimal communication from the young lady ‘chicken’ no other words left her mouth. Overall, I am disappointed with the service coming from the waitress’ side.

Starters amazing, mains superb, meat tender but not so much flavour. Huge Yorkshire puddings, lively variety of coloured veg. Good vegetarian selection. Large portions and lively atmosphere. Staff were attentive, polite but not intrusive, will definately return. Prices fair

We had lunch here today for my dad's birthday having had a nice Sunday lunch a few weeks ago, but on this occasion the food was hit and miss unfortunately. Only one gluten free option was on the menu, ox cheeks which were dry and gristly. The potatoes were also very dry. My dad's fish and chips were good however which was the main thing. Sadly I wouldn't choose to return, the poor choice of gf alternatives was very disappointing.

The Nelson used to be one of the very best eating pubs in the area, their Sunday lunch gravy being something to behold. We hadn't eaten there since before Covid, but standards have dropped alarmingly. Our "2" rating reflects our overall dining experience :- 1. The place is dingy - the carpets would have been stylish once but we're full of ingrained dirt, skirting boards & walls similarly shabby. My wine glass still had lipstick on the outside! 2. The staff were very polite, but the service was poor. I had to get up to find someone as our drinks order had been forgotten - they sorted this out & our food arrived a matter of 30 seconds later - not great! I then had to get up to find someone to clear our table- our table for 2 was obscured & not on a regular run! 3. The Sunday Lunch gravy was pretty tasteless, a big let down. The horseradish sauce was gloopy & horrible. It was obviously cheap stuff that they buy in & then put in jars to make it look homemade - sorry but didn't work for us! 4. Actually, the food itself with the exception of the gravy & sauces was pretty good. All in all, a very disappointing dining experience - as there are so many good village pubs that do great food in the area, it won't be on our list for coming back, certainly not until we hear that things have changed. It's a harsh review, but places need this feedback - impressive looking Yorkshire's don't win the day for everyone !

How disappointing! The food was nice but the staff were rude! The manageress was completely unsuited to a role where courtesy and manners are needed important. She was terrible which resulted in a most unpleasant experience.

We visited on Saturday 9th March for lunch. The girls waitressing were friendly but the two women working behind the bar were miserable. They didn't smile at any customer they interacted with and it was clear they did not want to be there. Everything was an inconvenience for them. The food was OK but didn't make up for the hostile atmosphere so we won't be coming back.

Excellent mid week dinner. We saw they had a winter sale menu which was great value for money. (Usually its a bit on the punchy side but always nice as a treat.) My partner had a paneer curry which was to die for! Better then a lot of curry houses. Kids shared a margarita pizza which I thought was a nice option to have along side the usual pub classics. Venison burger was spot on too. I thought the staff had abit more about them since our last visit, very attentive, nice to have it as our local

We’ve ate here a couple of times before and returned on Sunday for one of their roast, it did not disappoint! Just like the times before, a really friendly, warm welcoming, staff all looked happy even though you could see they were busy. Service was super quick and friendly like it has been the past couple of times, food was amazing, compliments to the chef! This place is keeping the high standard that we have been told so much about.

Been here a few times, nice pub and good warm atmosphere. I have given a very good rating here as the welcome was good and the thing we came to have, Sunday lunch, was lovely. I know Sunday is busy but, no one came to take a drink order, we had to flag the barman. There wasn't any cutlery on the table, no water jugs brought out to us even though water glasses were on the table. No one came to ask if we wanted more drinks until we were about to pay. You know, the basics were missing. The caulifower cheese i thought was very expensive for the portion. I cant understand why the 3 large pigs in blankets was less money than the cauli cheese. weird! We had to ask for mint sauce and horseradish, again basics for a Sunday dinner. So all in all good food, but service not so good. There didnt seem to be a manager organising the staff.

Not sure what’s happening here at the moment. We’ve been serval times but the last two (December and today) have not been great experiences. Sunday lunch was lovely as always but the service has seriously gone down hill 😢. Table not laid, even though booked, ages to get a drink when bar staff are stood chatting, no offer of sauces etc once roasts delivered, no water brought over even though glasses are on the table as standard, no one asked if we wanted another drink (and we all would have done so you lost out hugely) table of 6 and 10 respectively. Just doesn’t feel like you’ve got it together which is a real shame because your pub is lovely. Also to note, when we came in December, we sat to the right as you come in the door and it was Freezing, radiator wasn’t on.

Visited as part of a group for an 86th birthday celebration in January 2023.  Not long after we arrived, a member of young staff managed to tip a large glass of red wine all over me. Left wet from my glasses to my jeans, and standing outside the baby change/disabled toilet (ir was occupied) for about 10 mins I then had to ask for some paper to try to dry myself off in privacy.  I was given a couple of blue sheets off a roll which couldn't possibly absorb or help. I ended up having to wear my husbands fleece as my top was too wet and cold to sit in all evening. I do appreciate that accidents can happen and that the girl serving was very apologetic and embarrassed, I didnt like to make too much fuss at the time. However,  having been passed twice by the manager and still being left to try to sort myself out without any offer of assistance, both I and others in my party were shocked and disappointed that there was no management assistance offered to either me or the member of staff,   or  any  apology from management for the inconvenience and upset that was caused.  Rather than publicly reviewing at the time I wrote to them and asked them to review their customer service in the event of a future incident. Its now been a year and I haven't had any response from this establishment. Having recently read a reply from another restaurant responding to a similar incident, it has brought this uncomfortable experience, poor service and lack of consideration back in great detail. Hence my late review.

We used to come here when run by Moleface, when it was really good.They did the best pork belly. We ordered Pork Belly today which was not cooked properly at all. It was extremely chewy and full of undercooked white fat, not a sign of crackling, just a flabby rind. The gravy on the plate had a thick skin on and had the consistency of glue and was not at all hot.Pork Belly was served with some cooked pears that were overly salty and again not hot. No other accompaniments. Really let down this establishment.

We came for lunch, we had the fish and chips and the chicken with broccoli. We highly recommend the homemade bread and olives. Delicious!

Not been in for a while due to the place becoming rather unfriendly however, we decided to give it one last try yesterday due to the food always being perfect! We was shocked and happy to discover the change of management, the young girls who seemed to be running the place were very welcoming to every customer I spotted them having contact with, along with always giving a helping hand to the other staff members. My son works in the industry so I know how stressful it can be at times however, that didn’t stop the staff being so attentive and professional. Not to mention the food being even better than we remembered, it's all you need after a long week! I didn’t get a chance to thank the staff yesterday but I managed to compliment the chef before we left who gave a big smile… all in all I felt very welcomed and thrilled with the atmosphere, service and food. Very happy to feel we can return regularly again!!!

I was invited to a party in the marquee at the weekend and I had never been here before and I was amazed by the service. There was welcome drinks on arrival which was amazing. We had pizzas and chips and gravy which were absolutely delicious. There was a lovely atmosphere all evening. I’ve booked in to come and try there famous Sunday lunch which I can’t wait for!

Went out for a celebratory meal with family. Limited menu but we enjoyed our meals. However on getting back home my husband was very sick with abdominal pains .Can only believe it was from his meal of whitebait or the duck egg on his ham egg and chips. Have reported back to the Nelson ,and they gave apologies. I hope nobody else suffers the same fate when Going out for what should be a nice evening.

Dined here very recently and left feeling very underwhelmed. The quality of food left a lot to be desired and the performance of the staff needs improvement too. I think there may be some training issues needing addressing with the very young and apparently inexperienced staff that were on duty on the night we attended. All in all very disappointing.

The first visit was very good albeit with the Nelson offering a limited food menu. Now they have opened that up and it does make a difference. The range is much greater and the quality is as good. Although the approach road is a little tricky because of over parked cars, there is a small car park dedicated tot he pub. It has a large attractive garden area. Inside it is thoughtfully organised with good seating and decor. Staff are very friendly and efficient even in busy times. Above all the food is well above the average pub food with aspirations to the gastro. Still a way to go there but I wish them well as they are clearly working hard to make food a central and important quality element. Thoroughly recommended.

Having been here on numerous occasions, and supported frequently during Covid by getting f the takeaways, I am sad to say the experience is becoming more average on every visit. The Sunday lunch has always been amazing, however I can’t say it’s the case anymore. The roast pork was nice enough, very little in way of crackling, roars potatoes weren’t crispy, and the sides were delivered with no cutlery. Luckily as we were all family we delved in with our own folks, however not the best of situations given Covid. The waiting staff were very pleasant and nice, however we were hounded off our table 20 mins before our table was due to be handed back. Very disappointed, however I look forward to trying new places to find a fabulous Sunday lunch, as the Nelson, sadly no longer owns the top spot!!

The Nelly has been a great place for good food, good drinks and good service for a long time, but I have to talk to you about the Chocolate Cremeux currently on the menu (Sept 2021).The cremeux is a deeply velvety, bittersweet chocolate "mousse", creamy not bubbly. The Nelly top it with a salted caramel which inspired memories of bonfire-night cinder toffee and a thick, indulgent layer of cream. It's exquisite. The chef who put this together needs to be kept in a very safe place, under the best conditions. I turned up on a very rainy Thursday evening, full of a rotten cold and hormonal, a week out from my period. Can you imagine a chocolate dessert that after one scoop changes your mindset, disposition and likelihood to commit murder so much that you wonder if you've been sent into the future? Of course you can't.This dessert should be issued to all pre-menstrual women, people experiencing hardship, those who've recently lost pets, anyone who's lost in life and needs a reason to exist. The reason to go on, is cremeux.
