Lord Bute Restaurant in Christchurch

Ok booked here for an anniversary meal. On entrance no greeting from boy staff. Never asked for our reservation and just sat us down. The place was empty with droll music playing from the 1920’s unfortunately unless I was in my 90s I already hated it. The waiters who were very young and experience were nice enough but needed an older head to guide them. Ordered a flat glass of champagne £18 per glass how they can justify that I don’t know. Looked at the menu but was put off by the whole atmosphere so left after a glass of fizz. Can’t comment on the food unfortunately but if its as uninspiring as the restaurant we’ve dodged a bullet. Maybe need to look at a few other places in the area to see how service is done. Very poor I’m afraid. Would not return!

Excellent Sunday lunch, best in the area by far. Standard of food, presentation and service was faultless. Will definitely be going back regularly.

Afternoon Tea for my daughter's birthday, having never been before but driven past so many times, wanted an upmarket venue as a treat. The Restaurant is lovely and Afternoon Tea was absolutely worth every penny, good quality & variety, well done to the kitchen - highly recommend. Unfortunately, the whole experience was let down by the service. Two young, inexperienced waiting staff, whilst I cannot fault their manners, their attention to actually serving was not good at all. They were nervous & seem to avoid actually looking around to see if anyone required anything, so hence we waited a lot for any kind of service. They should have had an experience waiting staff with them & not left to cover on their own. Another criticism, we booked for 7 but had a last minute drop out but I advised the staff I was happy to have afternoon tea for 7 & pay for 7 & take home any excess. At the end of the meal, when asking if we could box up the remaining scones, to take away, I was handed 4 small plastic take away cartons. A restaurant of this high quality should have provided an actual cake box. We did leave a good tip, this was for the quality of the food & the fact we felt it was not the waiting staff fault they were left unsupervised, this was the fault of the management. I am torn as to if I would return, whilst I would like to experience the dinner menu, I'm reluctant to if the service is this bad.

Have been to The Lord Bute many times and it never fails, always happy to cater to us, polite, food is always fantastic, will be back often!

I visited The Lord Bute on Saturday for a Birthday lunch with my friends and was pleasantly surprised. The decor was bright and airy and we received a lovely welcome from the Gentleman behind the bar - i unfortunately didn’t get his name but he served us throughout and his customer service was impeccable. The food was delicious and extremely good value at 3 courses for £32.95. I had the scallops to start (there was a supplement for these, as you would expect) they were cooked to perfection with the coconut and bacon. My main was sea bass which came with parmesan potatoes which was superb and to finish I had the hazelnut and chocolate cheesecake which you could see was homemade and very tasty. The meal was very nice and the whole experience lovely. The only thing I would say is that I found the drinks a little expensive, my friends ordered a white wine and soda and they were charged £8.50 for the glass of wine and then £4 for the soda and a Diet Coke was £5. I did feel this was a little steep for drinks but on a whole we all had a lovely time and I would certainly return in the future.

On arrival for lunch our reservation was acknowledged and we were offered the choice of going to the external area for drinks or proceeding direct to our table. The decor and the ambience of the establishment continues to be both inviting and comfortable to facilitate an enjoyable dining experience. The menu is very good and is supplemented by daily specials . On this occasion I chose the special starter ( smoked Mackerel pate ) which was excellent. All of the food served was excellent and the attention to detail on presentation was a credit to all involved in the kitchen. The Pear en croute desert was a delight and when my wife enquired about how it was made the chef came out and spent time explaining how it was done. Throughout the whole meal all staff were attentive and friendly making the whole dining experience a delight.

We went to the Lord Bute for their Tasting Menu, and it was superb. From the moment we arrived, we were looked after and made to feel incredibly special from a drink outside when we were introduced to 'our' host for the evening, to the sectioned off area of the restaurant with a chef's station set up alongside our table. The 10 course tasting menu was a revelation, and each course came with an explanation of what we were being served, as did the accompanying wines. It's hard to pick out favourite parts of the menu when everything was so good, but stand outs were the saute foie royale (one of the amuse-bouche), the bread (& candle) and the Filet Tartare that Chef Brad prepared for us on the chef's station by our table. I've picked out these as favourites, and everything was so good it's too close to call really. The service, the atmosphere & the food & wine all come together to make this so much more than just a meal - genuinely a superb experience. I can't recomend it highly enough and we will definitely be back! A huge THANK YOU to Bradley Green & all of his team.

Staying in Mudeford for the week, we knew we had to come. Everything we would expect and more from Bradley Green. Stunning food and attentive service. Having been to Green's at Southgate (many moons ago) we had to try The Lord Bute. Absolutely sublime, shame there isn't one closer to us in Tewkesbury. Especially liked the outdoor courtyard area for pre-dinner drinks, though the bar itself is perhaps a tad small. Stunning, fine dining with incredible flair, exactly as we expected (Trio of Salmon Salad was out of this world). Cannot wait to come back next year!

Met with friends in this very plush restaurant on a very quiet Tursday for lunch. The service and attention we received from the welcome and throughout the meal was excellent. Good varied.menu. The four of us had starters and mains which were enjoyable from a varied menu.

Very glad that it is not closed contrary to public opinion! I’m so pleased that this place remains here and that the food and menu had a much-needed overhaul! I can see some people have written detailed reviews but i’m not much of a writer. I just wanted to say that my wife and I eat in lots of top-tier restaurants and the Lord Bute now stands 2nd to none! We are thrilled to have this top-notch restaurant on our doorstep once again!

The Lord Bute has always been “a name” here in Highcliffe, and we have been on at least six occasions over the last few years. Last time we came I believe we had venison which was simply dreadful which I did indicate at the time. We wanted to try the new incarnation under the new chef, but wanted to wait a couple months (my advice, never try something new in the first two months). We had Potted Crab, and Seared Scallops. The crab was delicious and my husband said the Scallops were the best he’d ever had. We had the Salmon Grenobloise and the roasted duck breast for main course which were also, I must say, flawless. We can now safely put the lord Bute back at the top of our dining list and look forward to bring friends back soon.

Came for an afternoon tea and the food and service were amazing. Everyone was very attentive and i dont think my tea or champagne glass were ever empty. The sandwiches and scones were delicious and everything was presented so nicely. I would definitely recommend to anyone thinking of going, you will not be disappointed.

Avid fan of Green's for a very long time, and though this feels very different, it was absolutely supreme. Menu as we have come to expect from Mr Green, classy, tasty, and enough on there to choose from but not too much on there as to make one nervous of how much is actually fresh. Crab and Rillettes to start followed by two fillet steaks. Didn't have room for dessert, but saw the others next to us Cheeseboard looks amazing. I have to say, next time I will ask for a table near a radiator, that was the only thing, but apart from that, tremendous, cant wait to come back.

We were celebrating a personal milestone and had an enjoyable evening and an excellent meal. The restaurant manager was very pleasant and attentive to our needs. Lord Bute has recently changed management and is better for it. We look forward to dining there again as we are locals. Impromptu family dinner, sauté foie gras, potted Dorset crab, among other things, fillet steak, lemon sole... top notch service and London-Level fine dining, incredibly well-priced. Will absolutely be back. Service great.

Came here last week with my husband, my sister and her husband. We’ve been coming here on and off for 10 years and I have to say that the food was the best it’s ever been. I don’t often write reviews but I had to say it was amazing. I had the fillet steak and the potted crab but we all had different things and everyone gave the same which was 10 out of 10. Can’t wait to come back! The only very slight issue is Parking but I was informed by the person who served us that you can actually reserve parking spots which I didn’t know.

We came here first in 2009 when my sister moved to Highcliffe. I have to say, it was excellent. We came again in 2011 and it was ok, certainly passable, and again in 2022 and we said we wouldn’t come back. However, we saw all the hullabaloo about it closing (which apparently it wasn’t), then the revamp and the changes, and thought we’d give it a go. The service from the start was simply outstanding, and they accommodated our fussiness with moving tables without question. The food was again outstanding, the potted crab, smoked duck (on menu with a “burned rum sauce”?? I have never heard of such a thing! Then I tried it. Absolutely out of this world), fillet steak and salmon. We finished with one lemon dessert, the name of which I can’t recall, but it was outstanding and clearly made by hand served with fresh fruit in a tiny glass. You can really see a huge difference in this place. We cannot wait to come back again and will be having a family Christmas meet up here in December. Outstanding!

Total transformation. New management and with the addition of the highly skilled and well known Chef Bradley Green. Everything about my experience was 5 star - the food and the service and the decor. I was treated so well I had to leave this review. I had the three course dinner. It’s was exquisite! I’m almost 50 years old and had the best steak I’ve had had the pleasure of eating. I wanted for nothing and the staff with their “can do” attitude with a breath of fresh air. I felt privileged to be there and to sample the skills of Chef Green. The hype is real. The place is recognisable. Great staff and truly memorable dishes and food. I can only recommend you see for yourself. I was blown away. I don’t normally leave reviews - but with such an incredible experience I had to. All of the staff clearly take pride in everything they do. It’s not just a job to them, that’s evident. Please see for yourself. We are lucky to have such a place and Chef in our county. 5 Stars all round.

We'd heard about the Lord Bute's transformation into flats, something we, as locals, weren't thrilled about (and would absolutely contest!). Then news came of a new owner, a chef from London, and we thought, "This might be pricey and lacklustre." After a two-year hiatus from Lord Bute, my curiosity was piqued. Their website was under construction (seems the previous owners still maintain it), but a courteous gentleman answered our call and secured our lunch reservation. The concise menu was refreshing; limited options often signal fresh and seasonal offerings. One minor hiccup: our table was a tad wobbly, but it wasn’t a dealbreaker. Now, the food. The "Potted Dorset Crab" and "Walnut Courgette" were masterfully presented and tasted divine. The crab nestled in a sleek, chilled glass while the courgette was tender, accompanied by toasted walnuts and a harmonious sweet-salty sauce and under a creamy parsnip puree. Our mains, the Salmon Grenobloise (which we used to eat in France) and Fillet Steak, were equally outstanding, especially the peppercorn sauce. Impeccable food, stellar service – Lord Bute, you've successfully swayed us. We're eager to become regulars!

This restaurant/hotel reopened under the new owner on 01 September. Still transitioning with some updated changes but we enjoyed the atmosphere new menu and some familiar faces. Food excellent would definitely recommend. Prices can be fit two or three courses still under £30 for three courses.

Wow is all I can say. Came here with friends for my friends 40th birthday and had the most amazing afternoon tea, it blew our minds, we have never had anything like it before. It was fabulous and the presentation was like a work of art, and it all tasted delicious. I'll be going back very soon as I can't wait to try the other things on the menu. Well done to the new owners and it was lovely to see a few of the old staff members too. Highly recommend!!!

This was always a bit frumpy ! Why do new owners of restaurants not check the local eateries ? The food was not good the menu was no more interesting than a local pub! do something different ? please not the normal meat and two veg and with some you put extra supplement price how tacky? might see you again when you change please.

This restaurant is as wonderful as ever. Vegetables come with the main course in contrast to its neighbour where mostly its necessary to order as an extra. The quality and quantity of food, cooking and presentation all first rate. Portions are good and service impeccable (currently all in facemasks). I cannot fault this special place which treats its customers as stars. And all this at terrific value price of two-course weekday lunch at UNDER £20-!

We booked in for the Jason Rogers tribute night on 2nd October complete with 3 course dinner, the whole evening was excellent even under Covid restrictions, the entertainment was supper the food and service provided by Chris and his staff exemplary we had been before during normal times and everything was spot on well done to all concerned will certainly be going again whenever they have the next one.

We visited with friends who had not been before. Food was good but not outstanding. The fish plate to start was a poor representation of the menu description and did disappoint in size. Lamb was not pink and as such could be argued a little over cooked. Desserts were as usual DELICIOUS The let down on the evening was the service. Inexperienced waiters who were very sweet and friendly but 1. Couldn’t open a bottle of wine that had a screw top. 2. Placed a jug of water on the table that had soap bubbles in it and seemed surprised we wanted another one. 3. Came to take our dessert order without having supplied any menus Also we had to ask for bread which usually is served straight away. It’s a lovely venue and we had a lovely evening. I would recommend to anyone looking to go. Perhaps a little more training of the staff would be helpful ?

Always busy and not difficult to see why. Excellent food, excellent choices, excellent service and wonderful atmosphere. We travel here from Romsey and it is worth every bit of the effort. Can’t rate highly enough!

We visited with friends having booked in advance which is always recommended. While the food was up to its usual high standard some elements if the service let the place down e.g. whilst we served our drinks quickly it took an age for us to be asked for our menu choices and was shown to our table almost an hour after arrival. We had to ask for bread where historically we wouldn't have had to? Seemed like a lot of new staff since our last visit so some training issues or maybe just not enough staff to meet demand. The Lord Bute is still a decent place to eat but you are paying for a level of service NOT delivered on this occasion. Wine list very expensive.

First time back since the Covid-19 lockdown for Sunday lunch and glad to say the standards have not dropped.Obviously, the tables are further apart and there are screens, sanitiser, etc.But in a nutshell food was lovely, service was great and the ambiance was excellent.Well done guys!

Maybe we got it totally wrong, we expected MUCH more from the reviews . The staff were great, couldn't fault them at all. The care taken to ensure people were social distancing was very good. However the food was OK (pretty average) and in fact it was an expensive average. This was really disappointing based on the reviews. We are use to paying above norm for stunning, quality food and therefore getting a quality of food that was no better than a pub but cost much more - pretty frustrating. (We are still wondering if we paid £27 per steak to get frozen chips ?!)

We have visited The Lord Bute on a couple of occasions before the current COVID-19 situation. We were still very apprehensive about going to which is usually a very busy restaurant, but to our delight there are very good measures in place to reassure others like us. The staff very friendly were wearing masks and there are ample cleaning stations and the seating is separated by very tasteful screens. The food was up to it’s usual high standard. I had the beef filled with a blue cheese and cooked in a white wine cream, which was possibly me of the best beef dishes I have ever had. My partner had the pork dish which she thoroughly enjoyed. Dessert we had a good selection of cheese with grapes, celery, biscuits & a delicious homemade chutney. This place never fails to amaze me. Well done to all especially the chef and his brigade. We will return.
