Long's Restaurant in Belfast

Stopped at John Long’s Fish and Chips on route to catch the airport bus from Grand Central Station - am so pleased we did. We had a fish and chip supper - the fish fillet was thick and flaky and the batter was light and crisp. Highly recommend.

After a miraculous day of touring around Belfast, satisfy our hunger, our friend directed us over to John Long’s for fish and chips. my recommendation is absolutely get the curry fries as well as the onion rings delicious authentic budget, friendly, we felt like we had enjoyed the real Belfast and not just a tourist stop

Don't waste your time with fish and chips from anywhere else in Ireland. This is it. Flaky, crisp crust, tender fish, crisp crust on the chips. Not soggy, not greasy, not tasteless like all the other places we tried. A simple, no frills restaurant with friendly staff. We asked a local tour guide, a tour bus driver and a guard at city hall, they all recommended John Long's! Just go early, they seem to close at 6 pm.

Have been twice. 27th Aug and today. Both times it has been closed for private functions even though the website states no reservations. Tried to phone first to check but the telephone number listed is for someone completely different! I'll never know now if they are as good as I've heard they are, because I'll not be going back again.

I cannot tell you how amazing the fish was. It was so fresh, tasted fantastic and the batter was crunchy. The chips were good too.

This place was recommended by our taxi driver as a good place for a fish and chips lunch. We were not disappointed. It is by no means a fancy place, but the food was hot and delicious.

Please stop buying in your vacuum packed chips. The reason why we all love Longs is because of the fish and homemade chips. I used to own a chip shop and I peeled and chipped my own. Ive been going to Longs for years. The next time Ill just get a fish.

We have visited this place several times recently.It used to be great but is seriously down hill these days. The last time we had fish, it was at least half batter. This time we had chips and battered sausage , avoiding the fish. We got two plates of chips. On both plates you could not eat two thirds of the chips. They were all just hard, crispy bits that looked like leftover chips. The sausage batter was greasy and soft so we peeled it off. We also had a curry sauce to dip. It was cold. We left most of the hard chips and nearly all off the curry sauce. We will not be recommending this place to anyone.

Got take away fish and chips. Beautifully cooked haddock in light, crispy batter and perfect chips. Reasonably priced too.

Visit 'Long's' every other week. Fish supper and either Gravy or Curry with it is outstanding. Great value also! Friendly staff :)

Live in Belfast but only visited this establishment tonight (to our shame) It was delicious and well well worth it. Staff were so friendly (Hello Jimbo!) and it was spotless. Will definitely visit again. Couldn't recommend the fish goujons enough... 😋

Fish supper was superb as usual. Fish nicely cooked with crispy batter and delicious haddock. Two had chicken goujons which were freshly made and delicious. Portion sizes were excellent.

Quite possibly the best fried fish I’ve ever had - superb. Only criticism is while you get a lot of food, the plates are a wee bit small, so expect spillage!

Disappointed The fish was over cooked. The plates need to be bigger. The gravy wasn’t great and £29 for a chippy lunch for two made it very expensive. That said the staff were lovely and friendly.

We visited this place as part of a two day trip to Belfast. It’s a really interesting premises nicely old fashioned with various pictures on the walls of the celebs who’ve visited over the years. We ordered two sausage suppers and a children’s fish and chips with sides of curry sauce and gravy. We really enjoyed the food and it’s as a reasonable 25 pounds ish with drinks included. The kids portion was huge and there was plenty there for the adults too. The gravy was very thick and tasty, chips were great and although I only tried a small amount of the fish my daughter raved about it. Service was quick and cheerful and I can say after nearly being put off by some recent reviews we were glad we made the trip.

Would have liked to have been able to leave an honest review about the food. However, although they are open to 6.30pm make sure to arrive long before that. We arrived at 6.20pm - the door was bolted closed yet customers were inside. We knocked and had nothing but glazed eyes looking at us like we had two heads. Disappointed!!

We had been recommended this place by a local but sadly it fell short of expectations. My fish and chips batter was over cooked and the chips undercooked. The plates are really small and as you eat you can't keep the food on the plate and it was not a huge portion. We may have been there on a bad day it was a Tuesday as historical reviews were really good. The staff were really nice and helpful which was a positive.

If you’re in Belfast City Centre and fancy fish & chips, this is probably the best you can get. Lockdown couldn’t stop a delicious takeaway on Thursday night and even when I got it back to the office, still crispy. Quality of fish is excellent.

Billed as Belfast's oldest fish and chip shop, the décor of this gem of a joint looks like it hasn't changed since the 1950's. Not open all hours and hidden on a side street behind the Fitzwilliam Hotel, John Long's is a fabulous place for reasonably priced fish and chips and traditional Northern Irish pasty suppers. Take away and table service by pleasant and efficient staff members. Nothing not to like!

Not a fancy place. But the locals swear by it. Went there because it was recommended. The quantity is huge and the price is very reasonable. Order the famous fish and chips. Loved the fish and not the fries much. And I recommend the chicken burger too. Very good.

I try to make a 70 mile round trip pilgrimage, driving past dozens of Chippys,a couple of times a month as I get withdrawl symptoms every week for Fish & Chips from John Longs! SIMPLY THE BEST!

Just after Christmas my wife and I went up to Belfast to go to John Longs for a good fish supper (we were turkeyed out ) and we were not disappointed. Fish was crisp fresh and tasty and the home cut chips were crispy and flavoursome. Both cooked to perfection.Well worth the train journey.If you are in Belfast be sure to pay a visit.

Been to Longs the last two Saturdays. Totally disappointed. Both times chips have been really greasy, as if the oil wasn’t hot enough when chips were put in. I know this is unusual. Please get your regular chip fryer back. She is so missed.

Saw this fish and chip shop on the bus from the airport. It stood out because unfortunately at present it is been dwarfed by building work directly opposite. After reading in a tourist magazine that this is a Belfast institution we decided to try it out. There was a steady stream of customers during our visit and I think it was the owner came around speaking to all the customers and even offered us advice on places to visit. Ordered the fish suppers and left contented.

Step back in time with the decor of a great old fashioned chippy ..I totally love this hidden gem..the owner and workers are there for their customers and nothing is too much trouble..the fish and chips are the best in Northern Ireland that iv tasted.this place will take you back to being a child..good old fashioned no frills service bread butter mushy peas and the crispiest fish and chips ever..to say I love the atmosphere here is correct.i can’t wait to revisit

We visited here in August, 2019. We ordered two fish and chip dinners for take-out. The food was delicious and plentiful. We were given lots of condiments (tartar sauce, malt vinegar, etc.) Service was really welcoming and friendly. I highly recommend it. I'm not surprised that this location regularly hosts tour buses of tourists. It is THAT good! I would return for sure, should I visit Belfast again.

Have thought about trying out the oldest chipper in Belfast for some time and finally decided to go at lunch time.

I drive from home past FISH & CHIP shops in Magheralin Moira Lisburn South Belfast to treat myself to," in my humble estimation" the best FISH & CHIPS on the island of Ireland! LONGS FISH & CHIPS are simply the best.

Oh! Lives up to its reputation hands down!! We had the fish supper along with the peas. OUTSTANDING. Great staff, service and wait time was excellent. Conversation with the owner and servers was part of the experience. Food delivered is just a few minutes and was delicious. I highly recommend a visit. Construction of a new parking deck in front of the store front creates a little bit of a challenge finding the front door but we made it!

Had never visited before but as its almost impossible to get great fish in a chippy in N.I. I will definitely be back as the fish was superb. Lovely crisp batter and lovely soft fish. Just as it should be.

Saw this on a review site and as it was Friday, decided to give it a try. Took a bit of finding down a side street near the Grand Opera House, but was well worth it. Had a fish supper each and a beer. The fish was lovely and white and the batter thin and crispy. The chips were home made and tasted delicious. Been here for over 100 years, and with food like this, should be here for another 100!

Had a great lunch here with 3 friends who I hadn’t seen for a while. Absolutely superb fish & chips with side order of mushy peas and onion rings. Lovely bottle of red too!!! Definitely be back soon.

The restaurant is tucked away off the Grosvenor Road near Jurys Hotel in Atholl Street. It is a traditional, unpretentious restaurant with a retro vibe. The staff are pleasant and efficient and we didn't have to wait long for our food. The fish was very fresh and flaky and the batter was light and crispy. The chips were above average and accompanied by a portion of marrowfat rather than mushy peas. My only issue was being charged £1.40 for 3 small sachets of Tartare sauce rather than in a serving dish as there was not enough for the 2 of us. The restaurant has toilets and accepts card payments. It is very convenient to the Europa Bus Centre. Overall, it is good value for money.

Fish is haddock not cod but who cares when it tastes fantastic. Pasties are great too either on their own or as a pastie bap, yum. Battered sausages are super as are the chips. Oh! And you can get a beer now too. This place is chippy heaven.

Obviamente si lo que buscas es elegancia no es tu sitio, pero si te gustan los sitios auténticos en los que poder comer como alguien del lugar... Es perfecto. El edificio es de aspecto industrial, de ladrillo y con grandes letras blancas sobre fondo rojo que anuncian el local. Dentro, tienes una zona de take away a la entrada, y a continuación una modesta zona con mesas y bancos en la que poder sentarte a comer. Nosotros confiamos 100 % en nuestro camarero, un chico súper majo que nos recomendó fish and chips y más chips, por si acaso... No soy una experta en este tipo de comida, pero sí que lo probé en más sitios y puedo decir que este me gustó mucho. El precio es muy económico, el ambiente... Solo locales en las tres ocasiones que estuvimos, y eso siempre es buena señal. El servicio, muy rápido y como digo, nuestro "amigo" fue adorable con nosotros. Yo lo recomiendo ciegamente para meterte de lleno en la cultura local. Muchas gracias a nuestro nuevo amigo de Belfast, no recuerdo el nombre, pero fue un placer

Best in Norn Iron .... if not the world Nutty Crust bread and butter Mushy peas Cup a tea Loads a vinegar and a sprinkling of salt. Simple things done properly cannot be beaten.

Our Trafalgar tour had booked us for a dinner here & had the place to ourselves. Definitely no-frills atmosphere, but that is part of the charm!! John Long himself personally greeted each of us & stopped at each table several times to chat. What a delightful man!! The servers were very friendly & efficient, getting many meals on the tables quickly. Oh, the fish!!!!! Huge portion of heavenly battered whitefish-it was bigger than the plate!! So light and moist!! It came with fresh, crispy chips & mushy peas. What a meal!! Wish I could have doggy-bagged it, cause I couldn't finish it!! Charming side note: on the walls are photos of actors & crew from GofT!! Pretty neat if you're a fan!!Make it a point to eat here!!!!

Whilst I work in Belfast I was looking something different for my lunch,I have sickened myself of salads,sandwiches,paninis,McDonald’s you get the picture,I took this urge to have a nice fish supper covered in salt n vinegar I had heard of people talking about John Longs and thought I’d give it a go and WOW was I glad!! The nicest fish supper to pass my palette in a very long time!! Fish in a light golden brown non greasy batter and perfectly cooked crispy chips,a great portion size and only £6.50 Bargain!! There’s plenty on the menu to chose from and has a nice seating area,apparently it’s a bit of a tourist attraction in Belfast and I could well believe it I’ll definitely be back that’s for sure.

Several other items on the menu: chicken, sausage but fish & chips is the specialty. Served with peas and okay fries.
