Absolutely the worst fish and chips I’ve ever had. Soggy batter, awful mushy cod. Scampi batter texture was terrible. Only thing ok were the chips

dont know whats going on with longs atm but they have gone tits up the take away iv got today 12.07.24 was shocking we as a family had to put the fish in the air fryer to get hot an crispy the batter was just falling off let alone trying to pick it up in 1/2 bits more like 5

There are two branches of Longs in Bridport. This review is for the one in West Street. I have already reviewed the one in King Street. I had cod and chips, and once again as with the other branch everything was over cooked. The fish batter was rock hard, chips over done. Both branches seem to specialise in over cooking ! Bridport really does deserve a better fish and chip option than the two Longs.

The worst fish and chips ever in West Street. Fish overcooked, chips were awful. The tea was 2.40 but we hardly managed a small cup each as the teapot was so small, No wonder it was empty.

I'm surprised by the good reviews to be honest. I had some chips, curry sauce & gravy to take away and I have to say, this was the worst chip shop food I've ever had. Very strange and unpleasant taste to the chips. I felt obliged to eat them as they cost so much and resorted to dipping in tomato ketchup instead of the sauce pots purchased.

Had a small cod and chips for a bit of lunch. This shop is hidden away next to a car park. Fish ok, chips not too clever. Some undercooked. All in all pretty average fish and chips .

Meals were ok. We had plaice and faggots. Nice chips. The tables were not cleaned properly crumbs left on tables. The carpets were dirty not cleaned before opening.

Family of 7 . We were recommended to visit this restaurant by the owners of our holiday cottage , who advised it was the best fish and chips and said we needed to try for ourselves. It was delicious , chips were lovely and batter was crispy and light. Very good portion sizes and we went away feeling very satisfied. The kids meal was Fabulous value for just £6 - drink / main/ and sundae (The Dessert menu for grown ups sounded delicious too but unfortunately we were too full) ! I would definitely recommend this restaurant ( lovely friendly staff too) ☺️☺️ thank you !

We had a family lunch at this fish and chip cafe whilst visiting family in Bridport. The fish was just passable but the chips were scrappy. The children’s meal was poor quality also.The member of staff who served us was grumpy, unwelcoming, and couldn’t wait for us to leave!

Visited Longs today and have subsequently read many reviews. Got to confess that I agree with most, outlining the rude ' customer service' Although the food was acceptable, apart from the greasy batter on the fish my major concern was the unacceptable manner with which I was dealt. After struggling to find the shop entrance I felt thoroughly unwelcome. Whilst I appreciate businesses have struggled during Covid restrictions it is certainly not helped by the attitude of the counter staff (an older woman arms akimbo, she seemed most reluctant to take our order (could it have been the end of her shift?)) It then became a 'toss up' whether we walked away or continued in the hope of something better. Sadly we made the wrong choice. We like Bridport and believed we were on to a winner but WE WILL NOT BE BACK. Perhaps a full management review of customers' comments would benefit the business prospects, Covid or not.

As a coeliac it’s sometimes hard to find a takeaway that understands or offers you something other than a jacket potato or salad.. well look no further.. this takeaway ticks every box. Totally understand coeliac disease and the risk of cross contamination. The menu is extensive , the portions are large and it tastes delicious !!Would highly recommend and have posted on the coeliac sites I’m a member of to recommend your services. Fortunately we’re back down in Dorset in a couple of weeks time so we’ll be back then !

Walking back to our motorcycle with my wife after a visit to the market we could smell fish & chips.As it was well before 12 noon not sure if they were open, we saw they had indoor seating and enquired if they were open yet, a lovely lady showed us to our table after explaining the covid rules.We both had the senior citizen special lunch £8 each for cod and chips,ice cream and a pot of tea or coffee, an absolute bargain. Fish and chips were cooked to perfection as you would expect.All staff very helpfull and we will return when in Bridport again.

No explanation as to why West Street closed. No GF. Family of 3 all wearing masks rude staff member said only 2 when people sitting 10 feet away with no masks. Pathetic. Avoid. I had to then stand outside with my autistic daughter. Get the feeling they only like locals. Stuff your chips where the sun dont shine

Ordered fish and chips twice and sat in their outside area. All seemed organised and clean.The chips were excellent, the fish was big w hire flakes, but the batter was a lot thicker than we would have liked. Will go back if in area though.

What a great dinner time find on a day out in Bridport. We parked up in East street car park, never having been to Bridport before, but looking for fish and chips to end our holiday before we set off on our journey home ‘up North’. As we parked up, we saw a sign for a fish & chip shop, had a walk round down nearby roads to see if there were any others as it didn’t look like there was anywhere to sit and eat, but being lost and hungry decided to go back here. So glad we did! The food was beautiful! The batter was crispy, the fish was flaky and the chips were golden - we even got scraps! The waiting time was 5 minutes at the most. The staff were so friendly and helpful. We must have looked lost. As we were setting off to find somewhere to eat, we asked for some forks. They asked if we would like to sit down and eat in the courtyard. Trays, cutlery and napkins were instantly provided with a smile and a lovely lady asked us if we were on holiday. This was a great little find with fantastic food and service.

It's been a long time since I've been anywhere that I've felt so much hostility - completely unwelcoming and zero respect as a customer. I've had food from here many times before, but this is the first time I actually went myself. I didn't know where to go to place orders and the older lady was basically rude, as if I had turned up to beg. The way she looked at me, as if I was some sort of filthy vagabond! I then went in to place my order and let them know that the signs were not clear, if entering from East Street, near the fabulous Footeprints. The young lady was completely dismissive. I'm the customer - the signs are not clear and the arrow points to the window! The young man was fab. But the experience in super-friendly Bridport was shocking and left me in tears. I took it personally initially but my husband told me that he'd had a similar experience. Longs needs lessons in how to treat customers. Who wants to spend money in places that are off the scale in rudeness? I will never ever go back, but I don't think they even care.

Great system in place to collect food. You can pay over the phone or just walk in. The waiting area is outside undercover with heaters. The service quick and friendly. The food was amazing.

Took the kiddies to get takeaway and as always we were not disappointed. The food was great, good portions, hot and fresh. The kids love the kids cod. Easy to order and the staff were very helpful. The boss lady took the time to speak to the kids and have a laugh with them. Our families favourite takeaway.

We were staying nearby & placed our order by phone. It was not ready when I went for collection & the paying method was very confusing, it cost more for the same menu as we would have back in Hertfordshire. When I got home the quality of the battered fish was not acceptable, the only reason I did not go back was the old lady who was mixing the batter was rude & I did not want confrontation. Next day was wife was ill from what she had eaten the night before, she did say the burger looked as if it was left from lunchtime. Most of the food was only eaten by the sea gulls!!

Well done Longs! My daughter has Coeliac Disease and it is very difficult to find somewhere safe for her to eat. She was thrilled to find that Longs in West Street is almost 100% gluten free. Fantastic Fish and Chips and very knowledgeable staff. We will be back.

Lovely little treats. We asked the locals and after a few recommendations, we thought we should and we did,..... enjoy their fresh fish and chips. Very nice indeed.

Ate here an hour before they closed, food was being cooked to order so presumed it would be nice. Have eaten here years ago and enjoyed it. Today, some of the worst chips I’ve had in a long time, they were hot but barely cooked (some were raw in the middle) and so white! They tasted like they should have had 5 mins longer in the fryer. They were also very greasy as if they hadn’t been properly drained.One extra star given because the sausage was ok!Disappointed and went out of our way to not eat in west bay to go here.

After a long day walking we thought lovely fish chips well how wrong could we be after working with fresh fish all my life I know what a nice piece of fish should look and taste like well we ordered haddock and plaice both with chips my plaice was far from fresh it was over cooked dry and tasteless it was frozen fish and hubby’s haddock was no better but at least his was not so over cooked it’s such a shame because it looked lovely but looks can be very deserving x x

I popped into Longs for a lunchtime takeaway. The service was friendly and everything looked clean and well taken care of. As I waited out in the courtyard for my order I over heard another customer saying that the chips weren't very nice. I have to say when I got mine I had to agree with her. They were very pale and very greasy. I don't know what oil they use for frying, but the chips, and the batter on the cod had a very strange taste. I only managed to eat a few of the chips, they really weren't good. The cod, once you got past the soggy, weird flavoured batter, was a good size and nice and thick. No skin on it was a bonus. Won't be going back.

Visited Longs for takeaway fish and chips as we’re in the area on holiday and had a nightmare with a different restaurant , had delicious fish and chips served hot and fresh and a covid pickup service that worked really well. Really tasty and I’d happily visit again!

Had cod & chips, old woman moaning about customers coming in before closing time, batter on the fish was disgusting, soggy & stuck to the paper, the chips were white and floppy, a horrible meal. I would have took it back and complained but they were closed. Obviously the old woman cooking couldn’t be bothered and just wanted to go home, happy to take my money though for a second-rate meal!

Usually really good, but batter on fish was soggy and stuck to paper, chips pale and floppy, why?? Usually a man cookkng but this time was an elderly lady, Usually they are really nice but not this time , if i hadnt drove to the beach to eat them i wouldve taken them back☹️

We really wanted fish and chips and found Longs very close to the car parking. There is a surprisingly nice restaurant to the back. Good choice of food, reasonable prices and friendly staff. Recommended

Hubby and I visited here for the first time. As we are both vegans, we were pleasantly surprised to find that there was one option for us, which for a fish and chip shop, was pretty good. So we had that one option, which was Sweet potato, cashew and apricot chutney tart. It was delicious, the chips were amazing and it was served with a very nice salad. The staff were very helpful and pleasant. Just one little ask. Please can you have a couple of vegan puddings?! We will definately be back!

On a recent Holiday to Dorset we visited for the Valentines night dinner. When we arrived we were given Champagne and canapés, the meal and service was excellent. Would highly recommend.

we have visited here many times when visiting bridport . we found this time the chairs and floor were dirty with food scraps and we were given a dirty glass. in the mens toilets the soap dispensers did not work. the meal portions were very small not worth what you were paying for. staff did not know what they were doing. we asked for black coffees and were asked if we wanted hot or cold milk !! not sure if we will go there again.

Excellent fish and chips with a wide range of decent puddings too. I think the fish and batter is as good as I have had in 30 years though I remember some vg fish up north years ago . The chips are good but not the very best I have had . Unlike my London haunts I never feel greasy or put off batter for 2 weeks after . Service excellent as well and the restaurant like a 70s film set. Amazed it’s not ever in the national awards: going to try the rated place in Sherborne and will compare

Had the finest experience of take a way fish and chips at this establishment. Well worth the wait, had a piece of haddock freshly cooked to order. The batter was very light and crispy no soggy bottom the haddock cooked to perfection. Will be returning soon.

We visit Longs on a regular basis and I can honestly say that the service and quality of food is second to none. Parking available and free after 6.00 pm, warm cosy environment, service is quick, very good menu. Excellent value for money.

I’ve been meaning to review the King Street Longs for ages my wife and myself will pop in to the Restaurant on occasion when we just don’t feel like cooking but don’t want to book a table at a more formal Restaurant the food at Longs is always good well cooked traditional Chip Shop fayre but what makes it a personal favourite is the service despite a previous reviewer slating the manageress in a previous review my wife and myself have always found her and the entire staff both young and old a delight it’s a delightful slightly old fashioned establishment that provides excellent plain but good quality food backed up by excellent service at a very competitive price my wife who’s American insisted that this is one of the best restaurants for Service she’s been in since moving to the Uk we will continue to return

They have change the batter to gluten-free. It is absolutely revolting, and I have no intention of returning, having given him chance after chance.

The decor of the restaurant upstairs was a step back in time and reminded me of the meals out my nan would treat me to in the 1970’s.

I left a review of the King St branch at the start of the year in which I mentioned the appalling behaviour of the woman in charge. I had hoped I had caught her on a bad day but have been back again a few times since then, including this evening, and each time she has been just as bad. I feel sorry for the staff who were all working hard and doing their best to cope with both the restaurant and takeaway. I certainly couldn’t and wouldn’t put up with it if I worked there. From now on I will use their West St shop where the food is the same but it comes without the shouting and barking of orders and constant criticism. It is embarrassing to witness. I am not the only person to mention this in the reviews, and bear in mind that the reviews cover both shops not just the one she runs. I notice that nobody from Longs ever comments on any of the reviews so I guess they either don’t ever look at them or else they don’t care what the customers think.

Really good portion sizes for the price. Very glad they offer a kids deal for a smaller portion which comes with a drink, this smaller size was great for myself, mother and grandma. Mushy peas were really delicious. Nice crispy chips but the fish was a little over done, still tasted good.

Upmarket fish and chip shop with table seating. Fresh fish used. I can highly recommend the fish basket which had all the seafood I like in a light batter and definitely from pan to plate as very hot! the cod fish and chips was excellent too

I have been to Longs several times before, but not to the high street one. I asked if they did the gluten free chips as the other shop & I was told yes & we are trialing gluten free batter too. I had the most wonderful fish & chips. They even have gluten free vinegar. I can't recomend the high street shop enough. They were well informed, polite & the food was amazing. I will definitely be goign back.

We had a fantastic dinner at Longs this evening. The fish and chips was perfect, really delicious and not too heavy at all. One of the best fish and chips we had in a long time. The service was impeccable, both ladies were so friendly and professional. We highly recommend this place, thank you.

After leaving them a previous glowing review, I’ve since received both the wonderful and the worst side of Longs, at both Bridport locations. Telephone orders that weren’t even started by the time we got there nearly 20 mins after, rudeness, and gossip normalised in the East Street branch, surly service, and one batch of dirty oil that prompted me to bin my dinner, being the only chip shop in the town centre itself, and with moments of such culinary genius, I keep holding on for the good times. Tonight, however was a mess. I waited nearly 20 minutes, having been refused to be allowed to owe them 20p (I’d left my bag at home), to see my fish finally thrown in the heating cabinet. The young girl didn’t know which one was my pollock, but hazarded a guess for a scrappy, tiny bit of fish. I asked her if that was right as mine had been large, and she just absented herself for a few minutes. I heard the owner mutter that it would take 10 minutes to re-cook, but she never offered me that option. I was told I could have a refund if I wanted. I decided to just bring it home. The fish was tiny, and even the chips were pretty bad tonight... not done enough. Then again, had the service been better, I may have felt more forgiving. I feel let down. I hope they turn things around, because at their best, they are awesome.

Went to the west street shop to get take away. I usually get cod and chips and a battered sausage. The batter i had was the BEST batter i have ever had from any chip shop. Very crispy and golden. Perfect. The fish and sausage were cooked beautifully.i think maybe they need a few more staff as i overheard they had been let down at the last minute but never the less the three girls in there coped extremeley well with the amount of people that were wanting food.

Popped in to longs in king Street today after we found them on a day out last year with our dogs. Lovely piece of fish, crispy non greasey batter (hooray) fluffy chips and nice curry sauce. Took it away sat on a bench next to the river and enjoyed every mouthful. I don't think I can eat for day's there was more than enough but soooo good.

While I have eaten at Longs in the past and had no cause for complaint, this evening was a different story, The coke was served warm and when I asked if they had any cold cokes I was told this was from the fridge so came to the conclusion that the fridge was not turned on.The quarter chicken was extremely dry and obviously reheated from lunchtime and the fish portions were although standard...........tiny. I ordered a chicken and mushroom pie and received a steak and kidney pie that was crusty and obviously been around since lunchtime. The chips were ok but again small portions on child sized plates, so it is of no surprise that in future I will be getting my fish and chips from West Bay were there is plenty of choice decent portions and to date have had no cause for complaint.

What can I say, fantastic fish and chips in a restaurant, but is a conventional fish and chip shop as well. Great meal, good service, a must if in Bridport and a great price.

An outlet for take away fish and chips as well as restaurant, in no time at all after our drinks arrived we had steaming hot fish and chips very well cooked with crispy batter on the fish, there is a selection of desserts too. Recommend you try here if on holiday

You could not wish to meet a more polite and helpful server than the one we had to serve us in the restaurant. Our meals were served piping hot and very quickly after ordering. Possibly the best chips in Bridport; they were definitely made from fresh new potatoes and were cooked with a crisp coat, but with a soft inside. It was easy to order from the comprehensive menu for drinks and desserts.

I sometimes pop in for a quick take away of chips. The chips are fine and a treat from to time. What isn't nice is the older lady who cooks barking at the staff and the customers. Even if the dining area is half empty she asks if you have booked and makes you feel so unwelcome. I saw customers today who apologised for not booking and she did nothing to reassure them. There was plenty of space. Dont know if the older lady is the owner but theres lots of complaints about her. I wont be back until something changes. Its cringe and not nice to see the way she talks to people.

Simply delicious! Great service and lovely light batter making the best battered sausages I’ve ever had. Been back three times in a week for moist, expertly cooked cod. You can’t go wrong.

When I take my friend to a Regimental Old Comrades meeting every month in West Bay, we always return to Longs in Kings Street, Bridport for an excellent lunch, Fish, Chips and Mushy Pease, a pot of tea, followed by Rice Pudding with Jam, and all for a very excellent price.with very friendly service

I’ve been here many a time to order takeaway meals which have been good but this evening our sit in experience left quite a lot to be desired. The waitress who took our orders was irritated that we hadn’t decided on what we wanted to order after a couple of minutes and while the fish was good the chips were at best OK and there weren’t many of them. When we came to pay for our meals the staff member commented that they were very busy, giving the impression that we were being a nuisance. Maybe they were having a bad evening but I shan’t be rushing back, especially as there are plenty of other similar places in Bridport. A pity as I remember that Longs used to be better than this.

Always good food. We told them it was a birthday celebration. There were balloons on the table and a sparkly decoration was carried to the table and staff sang Happy Birthday. Made it special. My son in law was over the moon.

I don`t know if there has been a managemnt change but nothing like it used to be . Poorly cooked fish, tired chips and an attitude that beggars belief

I think that I have just eaten the best fish cakes ever ! The haddock and mozzarella fish cakes were fantastic.

Lunch. Seniors special . Cod,chips and mushy peas. Coffee,Ice Cream . average portions. Old photos of Bridport on walls. Many stairs to first floor. Take out seafood on ground floor,but the special is only offered on the first floor.

Visited Friday night and whilst it is clearly popular we were not impressed. Cod was fresh and good size but extremely disappointed with the chips which were cold and the portion size lamentable. We dont have huge appetites but even for us it was a pathetic portion and we actually went out to the other chippy to get a bag of hot chips.

I am so tired of places in Bridport and West Bay serving chips that are rock hard on the outside, bone dry on the inside and totally tasteless. How lovely to at last have a portion of good old fashioned chips - golden, cooked to perfection and able to soak up the salt and vinegar. Yum!

We came here for supper before we went to a show. The quality of food was once again excellent. The fish was very well cooked and the batter ( the best ). If you haven’t tried the food here then you are missing out.

Went for takeaway food. Menu quite standard chip shop fare although the restaurant menu that I spied in the adjoining area looked very interesting. Not much space for waiting in while the food for both takeaway and restaurant were being cooked, very cramped and confused with who was queuing for ordering, who was waiting for their food and who were waiting for the restaurant. However the food when it came was pretty good. Chip portions were huge. Fish was ok, had better and def had worse elsewhere. But the what let it down most was the bossy boss lady barking orders at the staff. It was pretty uncomfortable to listen to. I don’t know if she is always like that or I just caught her on a bad day.

The first and hopefully only time I’ve been served fried oven chips from a fish and chip shop...revolting. Very uptight lady running things, all in all a very disappointing experience.

We were staying locally and decided to have a takeaway after a hard day playing with the dog on the beach. Longs was 5 minutes walk and well worth it, The cod, the battered sausage and the chips were all cooked fresh to order, still piping hot when we got back to our accommodation and extremely tasty. The staff were helpful and friendly. We wouldn’t hesitate to return when we’ back in the area.

Decided to visit after a long day out with the family, it was probably one of the only takeaways open, so we decided fish and chips would be the best option, can’t beat great fish and chips, couldn’t of been more wrong.

Decided to try these as only live in lyme regis and frankly wasn't worth the effort. Overpriced rubbish! Chips, dry and old with surly staff and at £16 for burger and chips and curry sauce twice it would of cheaper to eat in a pub where I am sure the quality would of been a lot better then here. 1st and last time will use them.

Had a mini break in Feb & find ‘Longs’ so decided to return on another mini break. Again, cod and chips was perfect.

Amazing food, the chicken breast nuggets are amazing, we will be bringing my grandson as he loves chicken nuggets! The faggots were also amazing, the food was delivered in great time and was super hot, the service was amazing amd everyone was cheerful amd very friendly, would definitely recommend

Amazing fish and chips. Great atmosphere. Need to book for a table in the restaurant. Amazing fish and super good chips. Tartare sauce let's them down a bit .. sad as out if a bottle and cheap. So easy to make and make it a special thing ... please make your own ... Your amazing fish deserves it. Otherwise this is a great place to visit. Easy evening parking immediately adjacent ... day time parking not easy. Enjoy ... we will be back ... Just love it ... and the chips ... so crisp and lovely.

We were looking to find a cheap fish and chip supper for our family and drove into Bridport on the chance of finding a local chippy, after seeing advertising boards on the high street we followed the signs to a local car park, free after 6 so easy to park right next to the chip shop, it was busy and we had to wait for our order, not a problem expected at such a popular place at tea time, the chip shop actually has a full sit down seating area and menu to which a few were sat, we were taking away though, the staff had the whole ordering and cooking process down to a fine art, so we didn't have to wait long, even after i had asked for 15 Scampi to be cooked.

Always freshly cooked. Have never been disappointed and use them regularly. Size of the fish is huge.

Visited before attending festival down the road. We both had the standard fish and chips which was a fairly good sized portion and the fish was nice. Daughters kids meal was good value and enjoyed by her. Only small issue was the restaurant was very hot. Would return.

The senior citizens special costs £7. For that you get either fish or sausage or spring rolls and chips. Tea or coffee. To follow Ice cream or rice pudding. Really good value and good food.

Efficient and friendly staff, large portion of fish and chips but the fish needed more cooking, soggy batter! This was our second visit and again very busy. We will return, good value.

Not good .it was much better years ago when it was much smaller. Chips tasted of old fat and other things as now all food is being cooked in them so standard has dropped as they now have a restaurant to deal with.my husband said the fish tasted gone off with a funny taste and for him to say that it must have been bad cause he is not a difficult person to please food wise.I say bring back the old longs chippy please as it was before food tasted like fish and chips

We really enjoyed our lunch of cod and chips, the owner was very friendly and made sure we had shade in the courtyard so we could keep our baby boy cool while we had our meal.

Living in Bridport i have been to this place a few times with some friends & enjoyed it one of my friends has a manuel wheelchair which had never been a problem before. Yesterdays visit was different though. When we finally settled at a table people on a near table said that they felt that my friend had just been discriminated against.

I have eaten here many times before and it has been good fish and chips and a warm welcome by the owner. Tonight a woman was in charge I have never seen before . She was rude and loud. Other people stared as she made a fuss about how the wheelchair either had to be folded up and put at the front or else I had to remain in it. The table was sticky, not really clean but worst of all was the food.
