Longrain Theatre | Thai | Indonesian in Brighton and Hove

Four of us walked in for dinner on a Saturday night. The whole service from start to finish was chaotic and close to comical. Food was some sort of bland Asian fusion, badly cooked and presented. The restaurant and particularly the toilets didn't look clean. Staff looked stressed as every table was waiting over an hour for any food to come out of the kitchen. Some customers walked out and it took about 30mins for anyone to notice and clear the table. In the mid of the mayhem, someone who said he was the manger, got changed a started a live solo rock performance. It appeared some of the customers were his friends and family who had come to watch the performance. It was one of the funniest and worst dinning experiences in a long time. Won’t be rushing back.

Not sure if this is what The Longrain restaurant in St James street used to be but in any case; I found it a bit disappointing. The food was ok, average and a bit tasteless. The music was horrible and too loud, and the Valentin’s day decoration was a awfully ugly, cheap and unnecessary.

Really liked the Brighton branch (now closed) but this place was not good unfortunately. Strange overall vibe, waiter didn’t seem know what he was doing. My meal was wrong, prawns tasted earthy (like soil) and the food wasn’t hot. My partners soup had huge raw chunks of corn still on the cob making up 70% of the meal, that was impossible to eat. They kindly didn’t charge for the mistaken meal. Maybe we came on a bad day but won’t be recommending to others.

My new favourite restaurant. The food was wonderful and the staff friendly and attentive.

The dishes were really tasty. Different Asian flavours that go well together. Beautifully presented food. Service was good, and nice atmosphere.

Chefs treat it like a place to play guitar rather than cook food. Starters were missed and came out at different times. Plates weren’t cleared. 3 main courses didn’t come out and none of the staff noticed. Whilst asking where the rest of our dinner was a guy came over to ask if we wanted him to play a song on guitar, turns out he was the chef. No we’d rather you actually cook the food ordered. On the bill they tried to add an extra main course than was never ordered or delivered. No concern for guest’s comfort as guitar was played obnoxiously loud as the chefs filmed their ‘rockstar’ moments on each others phones. Glass bins were emptied through the restaurant whilst we were still eating.

Having visited as a party of 6 service was slow and restaurant was quite ordered 6 meals when they came only 5 arrived had forgotten to write all meals down so another wait whilst they prepared it everyone else nearly finished asked for a dessert menu don't do desserts .All in all a bad experience won't b going there again.

1st trying this place ..well where shall I start ..booked for 7.30 ..took 20+mins to get a drink ordered then to forget a bottle of wine..then get told ur taster will be part of the bottle lol ..then took order to then wait 30mins for a few little starters..2 came with post it notes to say wat they were yet asked the waitress wat food it was for her reply was oh I don't no wat u ordered .. then 1hr 30 later still waiting on main course. by this time table next to us actually got up and left as they've been waiting longer than us to only get thier drinks and was told they're order never got sent lol ..then lady manager/owner tried to tell us they had Internet problems but was very rude and wouldn't listen to wat we were saying..attitude appalling ..they then brought a bill which wasn't our table it was for the table whi had left 20 mins before..then to bring thier starters out ..then brought our bill out and said that they wud give us 10% of food bill if we stay and reorder ..considering they finish at 10pm this was at 9.45 lol .and they got a nerve to add 15.00 service charge on top ..the service was appealing never saw a person unless we went and got sumone ..only cleared half our table from starters left other plates still on table wen we got up and left.. NEVER will use them again THANK GOD FOR MACCYS being open to get sumthing to eat.

Local residents trying a local restaurant on a warm Sunday night - lovely to sit outside - unimpressed with the wine list for a restaurant you would expect a better wine choice - waitress although sweet wasn't great - gave my husband a cocktail shaker glass as a beer glass - didn't explain that the main dishes come with rice so we ordered a portion of rice as well, she did then say she should've of told this to us. Starters were lovely the potato and the satay chicken were stunning and would definitely recommend to try however the main courses were dry not tasty we both had stir-fry dishes but they lacked sauce or taste. £115 for the meal including service charge for 2 people.

Foods are ok , not 4.5 stars , not traditional, the fried rice was really sticky, the beef Rendag was hard like stone, almost all the foods had the same sauce, that’s really weird for real Asian people. But the staff are friendly

The nicest food and a great atmosphere! The prawn crackers are amazing and I had the pad Thai which was also delicious. The waiters were so attentive and kind would definitely recommend!

We went to Longrain on Wednesday night for some Indonesian food, and it was a really enjoyable experience. The flavours were spot on and the service was excellent. Would highly recommend!

It was last Saturday night fair enough but no one came out for our order. We went in and they said they woukd be out to take order. 10 mins later the order was taken. It took another 20 mins for the drinks to come out. After drinking no one came out for us to pay We went in and asked to pay the bill to be told they would come out. 15 mins later we were still waiting to pay! Very bad service

This food was the best food I had on my trip. It was a perfect dinner spot with gluten free options. I will not stop thinking about the tempeh appetiser I had. The staff were beyond lovely and attentive. Sitting on the patio was a gorgeous.

Fab food... absolutely loved it. They had some singers in on Saturday night too... great atmosphere with audience randomly joining in to sing as well! Highly recommend the sweetcorn fritters, salt & pepper squid and also the Pad Thai.

Our first visit & we had a good experience. The food was lovely. The service was a little hit & miss but we got there in the end. We sat outside & really enjoyed the experience. We would definitely come back.

Friendly staff, good food. As Indonesian because it’s near the seaside I wish I could get selection of Indonesian seafood like bbq seafood but sambal prawn I had was delicious! Extra spicy and jumbo portion 😍 nice interior too

The atmosphere was really nice but we ordered desserts and the ice cream was clearly defrosted and then frozen because it was icey, the sticky rice in the Thai mango sticky rice was watery and not sticky at all. Also the coffee tasted a bit strange. On top of that someone came and took the flowers off our table before we had finished, only to put them on the outside table which was rude. I’d say overall it was disappointing as I was so excited to try the mango sticky rice.

Wow! That’s amazing food. We will definitely come back. The satay sauce is finger licking delicious. I also loved the sweetcorn cake.

If you love Thai/Indonesian food then Longrain Theatre in Brighton is a must. The food was amazing, big portions and smiling faces. We will 100% be back

Nothing authentic, poor quality , tastless, and watered-down sauce. This was a shame as we were looking forward to some tasty food.

Good food but poor service, lost the booking, took long time to order (20 min) and then took more than an hour to bring food.

The owner is withholding pay from numerous former employees, he is wicked. Bullying employees, he is often seen belittling those working not due to any of their mistakes or faults, but due to a lack of accountability from mistakes made by the owners. It is disturbing to know the amount being withheld. It’s also amusing that they try and make me do their website and design whilst not paying me for at least 80+ hours of work. At 10:42 an hour, I don’t think you can afford web design

I had the best Tom Yum soup with chicken for lunch and enjoyed it in the sun. And the waitress was so kind!

Me and my partner are now aiming to become regulars after 2 visits here! The food is consistently superb and fresh. The owner, 'Chandra', is so lovely on our first visit that he sat us down and spoke us through his menu. This is an amazing place for regular diners but must go place for veggie and vegans- as Chandra is one himself. My Italian partner told me she hasn't had tofu this good before! We also love their coffee, one of the best blends in brighton (they get and roast their single blend Indonesian beans themselves!)- they even bring over fresh coconut milk! Our favourite drinks, besides the coffee, were the sex in the jungle cocktail and tropical jungle juice smoothie. We're also big fans of the green curry (with duck) and panaeng curry (with the lovely tofu) The ONLY thing that could make the experience even better is softer light. It always being bright takes away from the atmosphere, but it's only a minor thing

Had a wonderful meal with my partner today the lady serving was amazing and very welcoming.

Arrived here for some dinner with my husband and daughter. After sitting for 15 mins we left. We had no service and not even a hello from a waiter. Went to another restaurant and within 5 minutes, we had been greeted and had our drinks in hand.

The food is good and fresh, but 4 of us ate here together and each meal was brought to the table separately, meaning the by the time the fourth meal was brought, the first person to be served had finished their meal.

It was fab the taste out of this world I will be back

Had lunch here today. The staff seemed very disorganised and confused so we have never received the drinks that we have ordered. The people next to us were having a bit of an argument with the staff, as it seemed they were trying to charge them extra for the drinks they haven't ordered - not the nicest atmosphere. I ordered king prawn pad thai, and when it arrived It had 3.5 (yeah, literally three and a half!!!) small prawns in it, for which I have paid the additional £3 on top - what a joke! When I asked the waiter about it, they said it seemed about right, and "probably there's some more prawn somewhere in your pad thai", LOL (there weren't!). The food was edible, but not not great value for money. They have charged us the service charge, which was not mentioned anywhere in the menu. When we tried to clarify they said that it's mandatory in this country, LOL. When we asked to remove the service charge from our bill, they said they don't know how to do it, and suggested that we just pay it, which we refused out of principle. They suggested us to pay it cash, so it won't go through their system, which we did, and left this dodgy place with the sense of being cheated. Won't recommend this place to anyone, there's plenty of good and honest Thai places around.

Be aware of extra charges that they might add to your final bill! The table before us was complaining about extra drinks added to their bill and we also got an extra service charge. There is no information about it on menus, as well as it should be discretionary anyway. The waiter told us he didn't know how to remove it from the bill and was trying to convince us that this service charge is mandatory in the UK. We ended up paying in cash for food only. Food was ok, but business and service is super weird.

I nearly died in this restaurant. The food is so good I was at real risk of eating myself to death. How do they make something as simple as a sweetcorn fritter so amazing!? We went for four starters to share and every bite was fantastic. also - Love how most of the menu is veggie. Staff were brilliant. What’s not to love.

Food is great. We were two without reservation. The person (alone) in front of us got refused (without reservation), he was told it was full but us for two they found easily a place for us. I felt this not right.

It was ok food wise. Thai fishcakes were really nice as a starter, but the randang beef curry didn't have enough sauce and the rice was overcooked. Biggest sin though was that the lagers I had were at room temperature and weren't chilled. Very pleasant service and nice atmosphere.

We didn't have a reservation, we were passing by on Friday evening and tried our luck. The 4 of us were seated straight away in a nice window spot... Service was friendly and quick. The food arrived quickly and all of it was delicious and flavoursome. The beef in the curry was melt in the mouth... My pad Thai was perfect. Everyone enjoyed the food and cocktails, we will definitely return.

Excellent Thai food. Spicy but not over the top. Freshly prepared and absolutely delicious. Great find!

Overall, we were disappointed. On the positive, the restaurant is well located and has a nice ambience. On the negative, they serve supermarket wine at a seriously inflated price, they automatically add a service charge to the bill and then present a payment terminal with an option to add a further tip. But the biggest disappointment was the food. In our opinion, there are a number of alternative Thai restaurants in the area that serve better quality food and represent better value for money. There is a lot of choice in Brighton. We would not return to this restaurant.

Just finished dinner for two at this lovely restaurant. The staff were all wonderful and the owner is amazing, looking after everyone and everything. Great food, great service, lovely atmosphere. We left feeling very happy.

Delicious food and lovely people. Not only have we enjoyed weekday dinner there but also my mother loved it for her 99th and 100th birthdays and we'll be celebrating her 101st with Long Grain next month. Thank you!

Disappointed on this one! At first, I found a long hair in my main plate, thought nothing much of it as it could as well have been my own. But just a few minutes later my partner found another long hair in his main and I know that it wasn’t me as I have been sitting across the table! The food itself was alright, but definitely not impressive (maybe it was the hair in it that ruined the experience), I feel like you can find more affordable places with much better Thai food. I’ve ordered a bubble tea and it just tasted like water with coconut milk - very disappointed on it. The staff was lovely though and just because of that I put 2 stars instead of one. Probably the reason why we didn’t voice the complaint out loud. 😅 Nice staff but kitchen is definitely something that needs to be worked on.

We came here with my two (youngish) children when visiting my sister in Brighton, and whilst the food was great, the service and the welcome was what really set it apart. Both the owner and the waitress who served us made a huge fuss of the kids, got them delicious smoothies, and made them feel really welcome. They absolutely loved it (my eldest is still raving about her Chicken Katsu curry now) and we were all able to have a really enjoyable meal/evening. Genuinely the best service/atmosphere I have experienced in a long time. It really made our night.

After missing Bali so much I felt that Longrain was everything my soul needed. The atmosphere, staff and food was incredible. A big thank you to Chandra for welcoming us and making our experience special. Will definitely be returning soon.

This restaurant was s superb. The quality of food is top notch. They accommodated our large group swiftly and made us feel welcome. Service was quick, nothing was a problem. They had A great choice of virgin cocktails. The duck curry is to die for! Highly recommend !

Lovely Thai restaurant. Nice cocktails and very tasty food. The menu has a good selection of things to choose from. The curries are particularly good and it's nice they come with rice. Good attentive service. A great place to take a date or go as a small group of friends for dinner.

We thought it’s a coffee shop but it changed now to a fine dining restaurant. But we still stayed and ordered coffee. The server was polite and friendly but they ran out of milk??? We have to wait for about how many minutes. In fairness the coffee was really good!

Hadn’t been here before so thought we’d give it a go…. Welcome was good & staff really nice and efficient. We ordered , salt and pepper squid, Thai fish cake, penang curry & pad tai. The reason for loss of star on food is the squid was tasteless, definitely not salt & peper, just had a bit of black peper sprinkle on top… all the coating was falling off the squid, looked and tasted like frozen from a supermarket. However the rest of the food was really good. Tasty not too salty & freshly prepared. Drinks list is reasonably priced too.. Will definitely come again. Excellent location especially if you’re off to the theatre.

Reserved a table on New Year’s Eve. Arrived early but it wasn’t a problem and we were seated straight away. The food and service were amazing. The restaurant was jam packed but it did not slow down service as food and drinks both came out in a timely fashion. One of the best restaurants we’ve attended in a long time!

Had a NYE meal here which was delicious! Lots of vegetarian options and a few vegan options too.

The food was ok but when I asked for a toothpick they said ….we don’t have Well it’s a restaurant not a fast food Please buy a few teeth picks

How we liked it here. We were there for the first time, and everything was done for us - as if for regular customers. They listened to our wishes, went to the meeting and were simply very hospitable. Thank you and we will definitely come back, because everything was very tasty!

Amazing vibe, food, and service. They have plenty options for curry, also have gluten free and vegan option. The mango sticky rice for desert is my favorite! Dont forget to try their signature cocktails, Escobar island!

Awesome food, awesome services and I will be back! Guys, if you are craving real Asian/Indonesian delicacies, this is the place. My all-time favorite would be their Perkedel Kentang, Chicken Satay, Duck Massaman, and Jungle Curry! I will be back with my family one day!

Everything is superb in this lovely restaurant. Love the taste of the food, atmosphere, great service, and cozy place to hangout with friends and family. My favourite were duck masaman, nasi goreng, and beef rendang. Will definitely coming back in near future ❤️❤️

The food were excellent, which I ordered the sambal tempeh, and the perkedel. Also, the service towards customer was top-notch. Would really come back to this restaurant.

One of the worst experience having dinner we have ever had. Once we arrived, the table was not ready and so, we patiently waited outside. Then, after ordering our food, we had to wait 1:30 hours to get just the water. After complaining a few times, the most rude and agressive waiter came flipping the bill in our faces and lying about the hour we ordered our food. After all of this chasing, with only a few starters as a result of our complaints, we said we did not want our main dishes and they still tried to make us pay for all the food (even those dishes we did not have). We paid exclusively for the food we had and did not pay for the dishes we did not even see (and doubt were even prepared). They gave us no solutions, they treated us really poorly and we are certainly never coming back. Would not recommend. Update: Their response to this review, was to continue lying, threatening us with our personal information in the incidents book and basically still not taking responsibility for their mistake. Outrageous. We are not going to waste any more time with this.

If you want to wait hours to get your food on the table ( even some water ) or if you want to get served by the rudest ever waiter ( with a ridiculous cowboy hat). This is your place Now as per your comment below: Please go ahead and report. Don’t worry we have documented the entire dining experience, from placing our order to your system's acknowledgment. Our bill accurately reflects the items we consumed. It is disheartening that you attempted to charge us for food that was never served. If necessary, we are prepared to report this to the police as well, armed with the evidence of our order, your system's records, and our bill. Our frustration escalated when you approached us, blatantly lied, and had the audacity to blame. Such dishonesty and an attempt to shift responsibility only intensified our disappointment and frustration with your establishment's poor service. This pattern of behavior persists, and I must emphasize that I have never encountered such a consistently low standard of customer service. Now , go ahead. We have evidence of your lies.
