Haus On The Hill in Brighton and Hove

This was once one of the best pubs for a Sunday Roast, sadly now one of the worst. This is what happens when the customer is compromised and is taken for a fool. The portions here used to be huge and the quality exceptional but not anymore. We waited for over an hour for the food to arrive and when it did it had reduced in past size. It was all cabbage and very little else. My chicken had to be the smallest portion I had ever seen in my entire life, I woukdn't even had classified it as a child'd portion. I sent it back in disgust, I wasn't going to pay fort the insulting portion that was presented to me. The whole ordeal was handeled appalling and was told that thay had a 'new chef'. Not quite sure what the signifcance of having a 'new chef' had to do with the insulting portion size. I left in disgust whlist the other two staid and ate their plate full of cabbage. A complaint was later made to management who took absolutely no responsibility whatsoever and the best that was offered was taking the item sent back off of the bill! Did the managment really have intentions to charge us for that, especially as it was sent back. No apology was offered and no responsibility taken. I did notice that the pub was nowhere near as busy as it had been on past visits, perhaps word has got around that it was no longer somewhere good to have a Sunday lunch at. This is pure greed to think that the can serve tiny portions and very little else for the same price as before and the customer accepting this and not noticing that they were being totally ripped off. It may be a quick way of maximising your profits for now but on the long run there will be no returning trade. Not sure about The Hause on The Hil but it woulkd be more appropriately renamed as 'The Hause that went down Hill'

It's looks amazing local pub with friendly bar staff and great prices for beers, lots of selection of beers, so, everyone can find there beer what you like. I didn't try food but I think it's looks very well to me , prices looks again so nice for Brighton..... highly recommended.

Lovely pub, delicious roasts and a great selection of beers and ciders. Wine selection is reasonable too. Outdoor area has also been revamped and, although overlooked by lots of house, is very welcoming.

Overpriced. Food not great. Has a Hanover vibe (up itself). Wouldn't bother with Sunday lunch again

Got the mixed roast and it was great, especially the lamb. Cherry ale was delicious too.

Normally love this place but giving a one star review purely because of the way that manager was talking to the barman - I suggest he does some training in people management as it's absolutely not acceptable to talk to your staff that way

Great local Hannover pub up on the hill. Really good selection of beers on draught. Well worth a visit.

I've not been here for ages, but we had a teacher's meeting here last night. Food served to over 18 people very quickly and efficiently at the time expected. Bar service very friendly and efficient. Great upstairs room for meetings.

Fantastic roast lamb with all the trimmings and plenty of gravy! Very friendly staff, and a bottle of very nice Provencal rose wasn't extortionate!

Was hoping this food would WOW me, but missed the mark. No goat as per website, Mutton - 'which is the same' (NOT). Bland Curry served quite congealed (prb last weeks') and salad left over from whenever, brown lettuce is always interesting on a plate! Lovely barmaid tho....

4 Vegetarian options absolutely brilliant food, incredibly tasty, excellent service all led by Ali and his team. Well done all of you, what an amazing pub 👏 5 stars 🌟 all the way. Kind regards Peter Howey and 3 very happy friends.

An absolutely fantastic lunch time. Alistair was friendly and so welcoming. All of the team are great. The Sunday roast was the best roast we have had for a long time. Thank you to the chef. The Milk Stout is an excellent beer. Thank you for such a lovely Sunday lunchtime. Definitely going back.

Finding a roast that caters to all your allergies is hard to come by, you guys outdid yourselves! Thank you for not serving peanuts thought out the day so I could come! Also the GF Yorkshire puddings were absolutely delicious!! Thank you thank you!

I was briefly contemplating moving out of Hanover until I realised I wouldn't be in walking distance from this pub if I did. A real community pub with award winning roasts and a great selection of drinks from small producers. There's always a lively mix of ages and groups here.

Excellent pub superb food once again! S/O to the superb staff and especially the Chef Danny for being a culinary wizard!

Great selection of real ales at good prices

Unfortunately had a pretty awful experience. The Barman was condescending and the venue was freezing. When asking for recommendations he continued to belittle any questions we had surrounding his beers as they're more independent brands and we weren't familiar. The beer I got was off and when we asked him about it he doubled down and said it was the nicest beer he'd ever had. When I'd walked in 10 minutes prior I could see he was starting a line clean on that product... so it probably was off or the line was dirty. Massive shame as I used to enjoy popping in there every now and then. We left with out finishing our drinks and went to one of the much nicer pubs in the surrounding area.

Excellent roasts, perhaps the best in Brighton. Friendly service and a lovely atmosphere as well as a great selection of beers. What more can you ask for?

Love this place! From the moment you walk through the door the atmosphere is great. The staff are so lovely and always make you feel welcome. They have a great variety of beers and the mulled cider is perfect in winter.

We visit with our big family for Sunday roast.Portions are really big so if you are not too hungry a kids meal is enough to have.Lagers always good choice my favourite is German lager.

Did a search of the area for top roasts and surprisingly this place turned out to be ranked 3rd best in the area and the only one out of the three that we could get a reservation on such short notice. So glad we got one, fabulous roast with all the trimmings and everything compliments each other so well by diversifying the flavours. Great fluids on tap too! Which we had many to wash down the splendid roast dinner.

Exciting and different lots of variety on the roast dinner. Vegetarian and vegan options. I had a children's portion of roast chicken and it was delicious and plenty for me. The beer we chose was extremely pricy at £7.20per pint We enjoyed the meal and there were seven of us. It was probably an hour after we arrived that the food came, some of that due to us deciding and also changing tables. We were enjoying each others company so didn't really realise the time. Only constricted by the local parking. Hopefully will go again and try a different option.

Went last night for friends birthday. Haus burger was absolutely beautiful. And the fish cakes were delicious. Nice to have some local brighton pilsner too. Great little pub with a nice garden area. Will certainly be returning.

There are very few places that have the legendary Hacker Pschorr Kellerbier available in tap and Haus on the Hill is one of them. It’s also very reasonably priced compared to some of the venues I’ve found this beer in previously. I make a special trip here whenever in the area and the selection of beer in general is excellent. The staff are always very friendly and there’s a terrace above too if it’s nice out. This place is a beer lovers’ paradise so make that trip up the hill!

Came here for the Sunday roast and it didn't disappoint. Big portions with fantastic vegetarian options. Fantastic atmosphere and great staff.

One of the best craft beer pubs in town, and the perfect destination if you're a group as there's plenty of space to sit inside and out, upstairs and down.

Great choice of drinks, but it's the Caribbean food that's the real draw. Mutton curry for the win!

Good busy pub on my visit / crawl. I thought I was never going to be served but to be fair was within not too painful wait time. Above the norm beer choice inc a few little seen German classics. Didnt eat but lots of folk were and clearly happy

Poor customer service. We were recommended this place and we’re looking forward to this meal. The food was good enough for a four star, unfortunately the customer service was verging bullying which made it the most unpleasant Sunday roast we’ve ever had. No apology for their unnecessary unwelcoming and rude behaviour was made. Sadly We will never recommend it.

Staying in Brighton for the marathon and our airb&b host recommended this place. It did not disappoint, he taff were friend and the food was outstanding. I was disappointed I didn't have room for dessert, the rum cake sounded amazing 😋

Fantastic pub. The Paulaner Weissbier on tap was spot on. Food was excellent. Pulled pork burger was so juicy and full of flavour, and the salt cider fritters were delightful. Will definitely go back next time I'm in Brighton.

Delicious 😋 I’ve lived in Hanover for over a year now and walk past this place every day, I finally got to enjoy a Sunday roast with the kids and friends. Lovely atmosphere, a real buzz, friendly and accommodating staff. I’d pre-booked for 6 and asked to add 2 more which they were happy to do. There’s a good choice on offer, but I opted for the Half Roasted Chicken with Lemon and Thyme at £16.95, which was also served with roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, cauliflower cheese, parsnips, chilli green beans, gravy & Yorkshire pudding. The Kids roasts were offered at £8.95. Generous servings and proper tasty food. A great place to hang out with friends and family, this place is also child friendly and dog friendly. 👍 Thank you Haus on the Hill for a delicious Sunday lunch.

Busy pub with really good Carribbean food.

Had to wait over an hour for food, had to ask twice when would the food be ready ,no apology,potatoes were hard and not enough meat,the gravy was lovely rude staff who did not care,i would never go again and the attitude was " ok do you want to cancel then" we were hungry so had to bolt our meal as a car was on a meter ,very very dissapointed and no offer of a free drink or anything.

Disappointing service. Waited over an hour for food, staff dismissive and rude and food aged due to wait.

Good food served by the marvelous Xabier! He was entertaining and kept us chuckling throughout our meal!

We stopped by here last Monday August 30th for lunch and took two outdoors tables (there were five of us and the outdoors tables are small). The multilingual waiter was very pleasant and welcoming, and served us well, bringing multiple rounds of water pitchers as we were thirsty from walking around the Lanes. My pasta carbonara was one of the best I've ever had, and when I passed it around for sample bites everyone wanted more. My wife had an odd salsa verde salad that was less impressive. The bill was modest given the location and quality of food and service.

Disappointing 1.5 hour wait for an average roast. Table next to us also had same problem and were told after 1 hour 15 minutes they had run out of one of their options they had ordered. No apology from the manager when delivering the food to us or other table and the manager wouldn't even look and acknowledge us as we left.

Having read Haus on the hill was awarded the best roast in Brighton we simply had to try it whilst visiting for the weekend and wow did it deliver! A generous and mouth wateringly tasy roast that you have earned after tackling the climb up. Super friendly staff and cosy atmosphere. If I can give this 10 I would.

Quality Caribbean food and great choice of beers

Friendly staff with a cosy inviting atmosphere. Didn't eat but the smells from the kitchen were amazing.

Decent marks for the range of beers/lagers on offer, not so for the result of being popular or not caring too much. On Sunday, 25-9-22, starting at 3pm, some of us experienced a high degrees of chaos with (i) the wrong order being delivered to us. It sat on the table for quite a while after we told staff it was the wrong order (ii) a long wait for our order. Then the "roast" (I use that word hesitantly) potatoes were quite cold, undercooked/quite hard, and stale-tasting. I wonder if that is common in Brighton pubs, because we have experienced it previously elsewhere in the borough. For the meat eaters among us, the offering was sufficiently generous, so they were happy with that aspect of the meal. I'd be happy to pay more for a better meal. Times are tough for pubs, i acknowledge. Haus On The Hill is understaffed at busy times, a situation reflected in the "chaos" aspect of our experience, i suggest.

We came here for a friend's Christmas meet up. The food for amazing, best Christmas lunch of the year, and the staff were wonderful. Plus a great drinks/beer selection.

Visited this evening with my friend who is vegetarian and has a severe nut allergy. Upon asking a male staff member at the bar if she could order a plate of sides, he told us she may as well order the nut roast, as it’s not actually made of nuts, and there are no nuts in the kitchen. We were quite confused and asked him to clarify what the nut roast was made out of, to which he responded “pistachios and cashews”. My friend then reminded him those are definitely nuts that would kill her. He didn’t take this seriously at all and actually argued that they are legumes. As we left for another pub he shouted at us down the street “good luck”. The staff here clearly have a really poor understanding of allergies to the point of being dangerous and lack empathy or common manners.

Fantastic pub! Excellent rotating beer selection, friendly staff, great roof/beer garden out back and easy to walk down the hill from after a few drinks 😉 serving delicious carribean flavours the food is also highly recommended! Highly worth a visit!

Visited with our daughter and son-in-law Great little old fashioned pub with a good selection of 🍻 serving Jamaican c Carrabian food would definitely recommend the goat curry well worth a visit.

A very friendly bar with a lot of space upstairs. We had booked a private room for a birthday Sunday roast. The food was lovely and large portions. They also have several excellent beers on tap.

Fabulous Sunday lunch, proper London pub in the heart of Brighton.

Looked up top roasts in Brighton and this was high on the list, and it definitely needs to be. It came out fast, about 10 mins after ordering and was Huge. Nothing tasted reheated. Every element of it was delicious. I am a big eater and I struggled to eat it all (that's a good thing). I had the beef and my gf had the pork belly which was a HUGGEEE chunk. One bad point, it's at the top of the worst hill in Brighton
