Wow ,large cod for £810 , more like a small cod for a kids meal

Along with other reviews about price increases, we’ve just spent £21.40 for two large fish, small chips and a mushy peas and got two dry and overcooked fish, what looked like the scrag end of chips and £1.90 for two small spoonfuls of mushy peas. We like to support our local businesses, but not at this price and quality

Very poor food. Fishcakes were diabolical no fish just mashed potato covered in batter. Very poor quality

John Long is quick to justify rising prices on the news. Sadly though, the numerous negative reviews “we are saddened to receive this feedback” aren’t being heeded, at least in the Wareham shop. Price is often less relevant than achieving a consistent quality and attitude - this varies too much, depending on the time of year and even time of day. Customers who feel that their patronage isn’t welcome at busy times will pass by the shop and the “two small fish plus large chips, £12” sign and go round to the Chipperies instead. Its greater turnover is largely due the higher footfall, but more of us locals agree that it provides a better overall experience and standard. Is it really too much to hope for a decent meal next time we go to Long Johns?

I was in Dorset for 1 month (on holiday). During this time I visited Long John’s three times. I didn’t try out any other Fish and Chip shops because when I asked for recommendations from locals, even as far as Swanage, they recommended Long Johns in Wareham. I loved the fish and chips 😋. They were consistently good. I found the staff to be friendly and polite. Even on my last visit on Sat 27 July, I could see how busy the staff were, and the gentleman who served me still found time to have a chat. Keep up the good work….you are doing a brilliant job and your Fish and Chips are amazing😄xx

Didn't even get food, we were in the shop yesterday, and were completely ignored for 10 mins, not even a 'sorry we will be with u in a minute' they were not even busy. I found them rude. We are not locals, told our story to the reception team at the holiday camp. On a plus side round the corner was Chipperies, friendly, there was a Queue of people which to me means it's popular and the food was amazing.

Second time out of last 4 visits I've walked out without ordering. Waiting 10 minutes in a que of 4 to which the first person hadn't even ordered. Sorry guys won't be going back until this gets better.

Cod was poor mushy if it was cod chips ok battered sausage good mushy peas good.

Usually I don’t complain as I always encourage entrepreneurship and businesses. And I am not here to complain on the food but on the behaviour of the shop owner. I went there with my wife, ordered 20+ GBP worth of meals for both of us. They had sitting arrangements inside the shop and this is the main reason we ordered in that particular shop skipping other ‘Fish and Chips’ in the area. But they denied us from sitting and eating there inside the shop. We were exhausted after a long journey. Despite requesting multiple times they continuously denied this simple request. It was very rude of them. Never experienced such kind of behaviour in any part of the UK so far. One suggestion: treat your customers with respect.

Proper chipie excellent fresh fish good chips mushy peas as they should be my favourite chipie .

Rubbish experience tonight, chips not a large more a small full of small hard bits, they was cold by the time we was home and we live 2 mins away. Definitely not worth the money, second time with this same issue, was giving them the benefit of the doubt but won't return anymore.

Felt very expensive, particualrly given the small portion sizes. Some chips were under cooked. We went round the corner and saw the other chippie had a massive queue so will try our luck there next time.

Tried to phone order through as the website wouldn't play ball. Eventually someone picked up the phone and told me they were to busy to take a phone order in an abrupt manner. Long Johns has always been my choice for many years but not no more! Manners cost nothing, but loss of business does!

Worst chips an curry I've had won't go there again ....haddock was ok bit of a rip off at £13

Friendly, delicious, prompt! Phoned a big order (24 people!) 1.5 hrs in advance and it was not a problem for them! All ready on time and well priced! Was delicious, warm and crispy. Everyone in our party was dead pleased. The man even helped carry my order to the car and threw in a bottle of vinegar!

Just had another quick 'small fry' pea fritter and chips - both Long Johns and their partners Chipperies make the best pea fritters that taste great and hold their shape. But mainly my 5 stars are for the upbeat, positive fine young crew that are on this evening. Its a pleasure to be served by them. They are a credit to the business.

Food doors were not being kept closed to keep food as hot as possible. Staff were not wearing catering attire/aprons/hairnets etc, but were in their own clothes.

Just got home with my food and the quality is V poor, a large curry more like a small and not great, a large chip was over cooked and more a small chip. Staff where rude only just realised I never got the meal deal of two small fish and one large chip so over charged for poor dining. Cheers for that, will avoid in future.

Young, friendly and staff. Nice clean establishment with a vast range. Great for evening chip takeaway to take home of sit by the river with the dogs

Just had the worst takeaway here this evening! Youngsters on the tills had quite the attitude on them and snapping at each other in front of customers. We ordered a plain and jumbo battered sausage and large chips. It’s was all bunged into a box with a measly portion of chips, basically the scrappy ends. It was hardly warm and don’t live far away. Cannot believe we paid £4.10 for a large chips and basically got a kids portion which was to share!! Manager seemed somewhat empathetic when I called and blamed experience on “new staff members” and wrote my name down to sort another time - I shall not hold my breath as I expect the bit of paper will get thrown in bin! Just terrible and very let down!

Mr long john himself clearly had experienced a long day. The man in charge was speaking to all his lovely young staff in a very rude manor. If I was them I'd quit ASAP. As for the food, chips we're not crispy and fish was more batter than fish so I'd say sub par food, wouldn't go back yet not the worse

The food was actually really nice. The price is a little questionable for the 2 dozen chips i got. The box was small and the contents smaller. But it did taste very good. I wouldnt buy again due to the price to food ratio.

Used to be good but really gone down hill the last 2 times the portions have been way off. £4.10 for a large that filled 3/4 of the box at a push. You are better off going to chipperies for a decent portion - couldn’t add my photo to the review but it is posted separately under their photos

Ordered sausage and chips, and was almost handed an empty box, I counted 15 chips..

Ordered Click and Collect on the hour on Saturday evening. Arrived at 4 minutes to the hour and could see a bag on the top ready for pick up. Young girl ignored my arrival, kept filling orders. Eventually 8 minutes after arrival asked the 4 of us waiting ‘ Has anyone not ordered?’ The couple behind me said’ No but this gentleman is ahead of us’, Totally ignored me and took their order. Eventually (8 minutes past the hour) when one other lady had her order completed and nobody except myself was there she deigned to say ‘Yes?’. I said I was Click and Collect and she picked up the bag that had sat on the top since my arrival 4 minutes before the hour. I said ‘you ignored me and my Click and Collect order has sat there for 11 minutes getting cold’. She said ‘ I was busy’. Not good enough!! I had been ignored since I walked in; the question, answer and delivery to me of the food took around 10-15 seconds. I had preordered, making their job easier, paid ahead, waited patiently and then pointed out the poor customer service ..’ I was busy…’. If I had come in and ordered I would accept the delay of course. I drove 15 minutes home and the fish and chips were cold. What a surprise as the delivery ticket showed they were put on the top at 15 minutes before the hour. So 38 minutes after cooking, cold no surprise. Previously I was very happy with their excellent service. The quality of the food is hard to fault , even cold..but…. I don’t want to bin you but that was a very poor experience. What’s the point of preordering???

Great people in here, had an issue with an order last week but this was resolved today. Tasty food, fair prices.

Dried up chips and small portions

I wouldn’t recommend. I visited on a Saturday night, there was only one other person waiting and we received 2 freshly cooked fish, which as other reviews have mentioned was light and not greasy. The service really let the place down. The team were acting like it was more of a social event. Joking about how they were going to resell an item that hadn't been picked up for delivery or eat it. Their attitude and joking around was to such an extent I was really questioning what the order was going to taste like or if I should even to eat it. Thankfully the food was okay but I wouldn't recommend going somewhere that doesn't take customer service seriously and be so unprofessional. To top off the whole experience the guy who served us as we walked out the door made a derogatory comment about what I was wearing.

Popped into Long John's on Wednesday evening. We don't have massive appetites so decided to order 2 small fish +1 portion of chips special deal at £10. Wow! Amazing value. 2 good sized fish and more than enough chips for the two of us. Beautifully cooked. batter was excellent. Thank you. Best we have had in years. Great polite service too. Thank you all. Will definitely come to you again when we next visit. 💗

How does this place stay open, we had a takeaway meal for 5 of us and we all binned the chips. They were obviously reheated several times and they were black on the edges. The pea fritter had no flavour to it, the batter was bland and it all came in separate bags...one of chips, one sausage and one for the fritter even though the playful youth had slowly made a dozen or so boxes up. Four very young, childish and very fed up kids FOH with one guy out back who didn't care. One of us went back to complain and they just shrugged us off and said "oh well" Won't be going back there...

Excellent fish & chips, large portions, fish just fell apart & batter was delicious & crispy. The service was great & the head chef seemed to have a great team with him & was friendly & supportive. Not something you often see these days. I will be back 😊

Usually good but today's chips were disappointing.(fish was fine). Lots of little scraps of chips, tasted as though the fat was old or the chips had been reheated. Also ordered 1xmedium and 1xlarge chips. Only received 2xmedium chips.

Went to long John’s for take away dinner. The first warning sign was the person that Cooks the food outside the front of the shop smoking his vape looking greasy and grimy at the beginning of opening times. With the hope it was going to be better we went in and bought the deal of the day 2 small fish and chips x2 and a couple of sausages. The front of house boy who was meant to take our order mumbled something but and walked away due to havinghheadphones still in. The girl that opened the shop was polite, courteous, and professional and took the order for us. While sitting and waiting we looked around and saw chip forks and dirt on the floor and salt spread across the table. Which must of been from lunch time showing me no cleaning had been done from closure of lunchtime to when We were the first customer through the door at dinner time. Whilst eating our fish and chips the batter was nice and crispy but the chips were definitely old and from lunchtime reheated. Really disappointed with the overall customer experience. I think you need a management structure in place and some leadership as the staff had no direction

In all honesty not very good at all, chips were awful, hard as nails, the sausage was about the size of my index finger, although I will say the fish was nice. Service was very slow luckily we don't live round here.

Would usually give them a big 5 but 1 piece of large fish had been cooked for a second time - this was very obvious comparing the looks and taste (dark crispy and oily batter) with the other fish portions. In their defense, the shop was very busy with the usual summer rush but still disappointing for what is generally the best tasting fish and chips in town. We will be back for more - after the summer mayhem!

Great, traditional fish and chips. Obviously very popular in the local area as shop was very busy on a Thursday evening! Large portions and quality ingredients.

Ordered cod and chips last night for myself and a friend when out in town. Wow absolutely amazing! Chips were triple cooked, golden, and not greasy. Fish batter coated just right and fried to perfection. Presented well in box and even offered a bag if we wanted one. Lovely and clean premises too. Service from counter staff first class too, friendly and polite. Fryer Dan is amazing and is definitely an asset to this business. Thank you - will definitely be ordering from here again.

Food was good but the service was really disappointing. The young lady who was serving and trying to do her job got no support from the person cooking who had not cooked enough chips! He was very busy on his phone and looking in the freezer. People who had been waiting over an hour left with refunds.

Absolutely rubbish. Took over an hour to not get what we ordered. Would give 0 stars if I could. I understand it can get busy, I work in catering but that place is pathetic.

Vedry busy but great food and service

Had probably one of the best fish n chips last night … think chips were at least double if not triple cooked… so crispy and tasty potatoes. The haddock was so yummy and the service lovely. Will be back later in week as on hols this week. Yummy 😋

Large amount of portion of chips were scraps, the inedible greasy crispy waste that is given away free at some chippies. When I highlighted this, the frier told me that if I didn't want them I could put them in the bin and that he wasn't going to give me any chips to make up for the deficit, that that's what you get. His attitude was dreadful and his customer service was little to none. Should he be blowing his nose over the friers at his station? If it wasn't for two younger members of staff, one in particular, who realised the poor behaviour of the frier, who saved the situation, it could have been a lot worse. Thank you to them. And afterwards, another member of the serving staff told to "Get out", "You're got your chips, now get out". In front of children and other customers. Shocking. Will never spend my money there ever again.

we live in wool and phoned to ask if we could order a takeaway and was told very rudely no too busy and put the phone down. I hope if we use it again the fish and chips are better than the staff attitude

Long johns is normally my chippy of choice in Wareham, but don’t know what happened on this night. Bought jumbo sausage and chips for me and chips and pineapple fritter for my vegetarian wife. Got home to find that the fritter had been put in the same bag as my jumbo sausage so she didn’t want that having touched the meat. Common sense would surely see ordering something from the vegetarian section should be kept separate from other things. When I opened my chips, a good third of my portion looked as if it were the dregs from the bottom. Hope things improve next time otherwise might have to take my business elsewhere. Giving three stars as I know it’s usually better than this. Maybe staff could do with some training

Unfortunately it's definitely the worst fish and chips we've had... rubbery dry fish caked in hard dry batter. A real shame.

Not good value for money. Was very nice tasting but I bought a large fish and a large chips and definitely wouldn’t say either was large. For the money spent I was very disappointed.

Very nicely cooked fish and chips. We had two 'small' fish and chips which were actually the same size that a normal fish and chips would be where we come from, Lymington. Great value!

The potion size of the large fish at £6.95 is small!! Not worth the money, and chips soggy! We were visiting the area, the chip shop on the high st had a queu, clearly for good reason. 2 x large cod and large chips £22! Not worth it stand in line at the other chip shop.

Quality food and reasonable price

As always, delicious light, crispy, dry batter around lovely white cod and a generous portion of chips; however for the first time I was a little disappointed the ‘standard’ cod was less than half the size of the ‘large’ we also ordered.

Love this place, always cooked perfectly and hot.

It has often been said if there is a queue outside a fish and chip shop then you are in for a treat. That was infact the case yesterday evening. With a wait of about 15 minutes whilst orders were completed for other equally eager members of the public, cooked whilst you wait, number 54 was called out. Collected my order from a correctly masked member of staff and drove to my holiday accommodation. Was I in for a treat, lovely light crispy batter, perfect white cod flesh inside cooked to perfection. Well done.

Very pleased to say this was the best fish and chips we have ever had. Crispy not soggy, fresh and just downright delightful. Well impressed.

We only had chips but they were great!!
