Our visit to this restaurant was frustrating from start to finish. Upon arrival, it was unclear how to get a seat, were we supposed to wait outside or go in and ask? Once seated, we ordered our food, only to wait 40 minutes before realising it had been served to another table that arrived well after us. When we questioned this, we were told it would be out soon. After another 20 minutes, and having asked for a refund twice, our food finally arrived. We were told the mix-up happened because we had moved seats, yet oddly enough, our dessert still managed to find us without issue. When the food did arrive, it was mediocre at best, certainly not worth the excessive wait or the price. Bristol has far better options for the same cost. The atmosphere wasn’t enjoyable either, the DJ played music far too loud, making it difficult to have a conversation without shouting. To their credit, they offered a free drink and cake to apologise, but given the overall experience, I didn’t have much faith that these would have been any better. I’d recommend avoiding this place unless management addresses the numerous issues, from service and food quality to overall organisation. Unfortunately, too many other reviews reflect similar experiences.

I love the food and drinks here and have returned on multiple occasions! However, charging £6 for a takeaway drink and it taking 20 mins to arrive is not what I expect. Every time I have been here I have thought exactly the same thing - that the place is understaffed and service needs improving. Shame as I can’t say a bad word about quality of the food / drinks :(

We waited 20 minutes to get in, which was understandable since the place is popular. After ordering, we expected a reasonable wait, but it took 40 minutes only to realise our food had been given to the table next to us, even though they arrived well after us. When we questioned it, the staff apologised and said our food would be ready in 5 minutes, but that wasn’t true. We ended up waiting another 20 minutes, making it a total of an hour before we finally got our food. They offered a free drink and cake as compensation, but by that point, we were so frustrated that we just wanted to eat and leave. The restaurant is quite disorganised, with no clear system for managing queues. Staff seemed unsure of who was waiting and who had been seated. While the food was good, it wasn’t worth the price. The loud DJ also made it difficult to have a conversation. I was really excited to try this place, but unfortunately, it was a letdown. They need much better management to handle service more efficiently.

I think we visited on an off day for the restaurant. There wasn't any pork (2/7 meals weren't available) and when ordering we were told the rice cooker was broken, (6/7 meals include rice), they did add additional protein to compensate, but it wasn't as balanced meal. Others who preferred later did get rice with their meals. We had to ask for the table to be cleaned a while after we sat down, the food was nice, but I was expecting better based on the reviews.

A really disappointing experience, we visited on a friend's recommendation. Waited over forty minutes for our meals. When we asked the front of house staff, they said yeah that it was coming but there was an issue with the rice. If this was known why would you not have acknowledged the customers waiting for so long and apologise. It was so uncomfortablly loud in there, that it was very hard to have a conversation. When the food arrived it was very tasty, but the portions were small considering the price, and that coupled with poor service and atmosphere, lead to all in all bad experience. I wouldn't return.

Unique concept in how to do do food and atmosphere. The record player and raised bar creates an interest feeling and the food is really good. I will definitely come back to try the other dishes. I think their toasties are probably the winners!

Had seen this place online so ventured down from Stroud. Really nice vibe, laid back hip-hop, Loyle Carner, that sort of thing. I ordered the French Toast and my 12yr old daughter had the traditional Japanese breakfast with Salmon and egg. The Toast must have been easily 2-2.5 inches think (I'm in my 50s so cut me some slack, I don't do centimetres), so fluffy and unctuous. My daughter loved hers too. Tried each others and both approved as well. Next time we're Bristol way will definitely be heading back 👌

I want this place to do well. The Japanese breakfast was so comforting to eat and I would get it again as they didn’t have the eggs this time, but the silken tofu was delicious. Looking at other photos I’m now realising my miso soup was meant to have some tofu and seaweed :(. The soup arrived cold but was very kindly replaced by the chef. Our drinks and cake took half an hour to arrive which was disappointing. The barista had a lot to do by herself and was overwhelmed so I don’t fault her. I just hope they hire more staff so they aren’t so short staffed leading to more negative reviews, because the place has everything it needs to be amazing, except enough staff and perhaps enough food. The mochi strawberry cake was perfect and they serve real good coffee. I want this place to succeed, it’s an amazing concept and I look forward to the menu being expanded. Ps I know some random person didn’t get up on here and leave a bad review just because kimchi is Korean and not Japanese 🤨

Oh dear, they were having a terrible day when we attended on Sunday 16th February. Our lonely mouth experience became an empty mouth. Arrived at 12:45pm and a sign said kitchen closed till 1pm, we had some green tea & patiently waited. The sign was swiftly changed to kitchen closed till 1:30pm. Staff assured us service would resume and took our order. Then it really went downhill, they apologised for the delay but they had run out of rice, then Tofu. Next we were informed the rice cooker had broken and so couldn't cook rice! We were offered a partial refund on that! The young staff had no sense of urgency and barely communicated with us. Food eventually turned up at 2:20pm some ninety minutes after ordering and of course without rice, leaving us feeling somewhat unfulfilled. Happy to say both the Salmon and Miso Soup were delicious. Needless to say I shan't be returning but if it operates like this will it really stay in business. Michael Gribben

Was really hyped to come here, and due to the no bookings policy, we turned up at 2:30pm in the hope of it being past peak lunch. We were lucky to get a table as saw a couple leave, but then had their dirty plates in front of us for the full duration we were there, which was a very long time. We tried to get the staff’s attention, but they were busy instagramming or playing with the dog, so we waited. It took an hour for any food to arrive, and when it did, it was missing one main meal (out of two) and the other was cold. We went to complain and was told to redo the cold dish, would be another 20 min wait, so we just (re)ordered two of the quicker meals, which turned out to be very salty and essentially bacon. Having paid at the start, we parted with £50 for some of the worst food and service we’ve had in Bristol. In theory would have been fun, but perhaps they’ve grown too big for what they can cover and so quality has dramatically decreased.

After hearing lots of amazing things about Lonely Mouth, I thought today was finally going to be the day I could try some of their food. Unfortunately this wasn't the case. We arrived at 13.10 and asked for a table, the staff tells us the kitchen is closed until 13.30, we say we're happy to wait and take a seat. At 13.40 there still aren't any news so I ask the staff if we're able to order food. I'm told it will be 10 minutes longer before they can take orders as they are understaffed and ran out of ingredients so someone has gone to re-stock and will be back soon. All good- I've worked in hospitality before and I know how hectic it can be on a last minute understaffed day. My friends and I get ourselves some water and sit down again, we wait patiently with no further updates so at 14.10 we ask again and we are told the rice cooker is broken so they're now only serving french toast. We left to find somewhere else to eat. Very disappointed with the service. We totally get that things can go wrong on a bad day but at no point any of the staff cared to offer not even a glass of water or any update, we had to chase them twice to be told (after waiting 1 whole hour) they wouldn't be able to serve anything besides dessert. Off-putting to say the least, I don't think we'll try visit again.

Not to be a naysayer but kimichi is Korean not Japanese and I'm not sure kimichi toast is a Korean dish. Also, most of these food pics don't look Japanese so I would suspect this restaurant serves 'asian' food for British customers.

Arrived on a Saturday at 11am. The place was busy but we were fortunate enough to grab a table as 2 were leaving. To order you go to the bar and pay straight away. We ordered a flat white, matcha ice tea, the salmon tesihoku and french toast. The highlight for me was the French toast which was the best I've had. I also enjoyed the salmon and the miso soup which was full of flavour! I will certainly be coming back again and this time at 12 so I can listen to the DJ as I just missed him. There are a couple of warnings. Lonely mouth is very popular and will struggle to accommodate a group of 4 as it is a small space and food does take a fairly long time in peak hours. Also after we sat down around 15 people turned up in dribs and drabs waiting to be seated but there's only 16 seats in the cafe so some of them would have waited a good 30-40minutes before getting a seat.

Came in for breakfast with my ma, who has had to change to a restricted diet for medical reasons last year. She was so happy to finally be able to have an exquisite meal, no changes required. We both had the salmon dish, which in itself is delicious but for me its all about the sides here. The range of flavours and textures between the creamy jammy egg, gentle heat of the kimchi and tang from the pickles brought sunshine to a grey December morning. The atmosphere is that of soothing chatter, excellent music and good dogs. Very much looking forward to our next visit. Thankyou

Was drawn in by the hype online but left incredibly disappointed and underwhelmed. We waited over an hour and 20 mins for our food and when it arrived it was the wrong order and stone cold. Poor Saturday lunch service We came here once before and it took a while to arrive, so me and my partner ordered and asked how long it would take to arrive, we were told '30 mins'. We waited 30 minutes for our drinks, then after 1 hour and 20 minutes of waiting, I end up going over to the counter to ask about our food. The waitress said it's due to being at full capacity. Then she said it was due to the rice not being ready. Then she said it was because our order was taken by the people next to us. The only people who were next to us had the rice with tea, and the set meal. We ordered two of the set meal, so very unusual. She apologised and gave us free drinks, and our food arrived after another 20 minutes. I received my meal but my partner got something else - the rice with tea. Unfortunately, the food wasn't as good as we had previously either, rice was mushy and inconsistent. After waiting for nearly 2 hours, we were simply too hungry to bother, so we ate and left. It's a shame because we had a similar experience when we tried this place a few months ago and thought we'd give it another go but we ended up being disappointed again.

Really awkward when walking in as the staff don't seem at all interested you're there. We ordered the salmon and rice breakfast. Food was really nice, quite a long wait, and size of the salmon is quite small for the price. Overall this place is more of a vibe than a cafe. Really lovely people working, but the way they handled a broken rice cooker was disappointing. I asked for an update, and the waitress said she'd check. She went away, then completely blanked me. I had to ask her again to get an answer, and was told only '10 minutes', which just wasn't true. I completely understand why they thought that was a good idea, but it's really unhelpful. No one in hospitality is getting paid a fraction of what they should be, so I'm not expecting The Ritz, but please just be more open and honest with everyone when these things happen. Even if you're not sure, there's no harm in saying that. We were eventually told the rice cooker was broken, so I asked to get my money back, minus the delicious drink. But when I asked, they came back with "It's not our fault". I wasn't even blaming anyone, and tried to be as polite as possible; I understand these things happen. The only fix was to offer us our meal with no rice, without any kind of reduction in price or offer of a drink. I found this a really strange fix after waiting 90+ minutes. Anyways, we can't wait to come back and try the food, which looks delicious!

Fantastic food but not worth waiting 2hrs for it. We arrived about 11.20 and waited 35 mins for a table, we were told it would be about 15mins wait but it was really full so could tell this was optimistic. Ordered just before 12, food arrived at 1.30. An hour passed without letting any of us know what was going on, 3 or 4 tables ordered at the same time as us, all starving by this point. It might seem easier or more chill to not take reservations but it just makes everyone have a worse time. Kitchen can't plan, foh are constantly in chaos, customers don't know if or when they'll eat.

Feel really disappointed by the whole experience. We went in on a Sunday and they were clearly really busy which we expected. The food looked great when it was coming out and we were excited to try it out. We sat down and I then ordered for my wife and I and we got our drinks fairly promptly. After 45 mins I checked with one of the waiting staff to see if our food was coming and were told it would be out in five minutes. Another ten mins passed so we had in total waited one hour. We then asked another member of staff who I presume was the owner/manager who said it would be another fifteen mins so at this point we asked for a refund. The owner/manager asked if there was a queue when we ordered (which there was for people to sit down, not to order) and then said it's fairly standard to wait an hour for food and that they had had a problem with the rice cooker or something... I understand that everything is made fresh but regardless of whether someone thinks that's standard, I'd at least expect the staff to keep paying customers informed at point of service and during the wait itself. We love to support local businesses but the attitude of the staff here was pretty dreadful. It seemed that we were the problem. No apology at any point and just a really dismissive and patronising attitude. At one point we were told that they had been working on hospitality for a long time and an hour's wait is perfectly normal. On principle I just wouldn't go again regardless of how good the food might be.

EDIT: As you will see, the response from the owner below is extremely inflammatory and defensive, which was exactly her approach when we politely said we should have been told that there would have been a wait on food. If they would have explained when we arrived that the food would take an hour and a half because there's 'a problem with the rice cooker' (which nobody was aware of), we would have gone elsewhere'. I'm not sure that's an unreasonable request, but clearly this place can't handle any kind of constructive feedback, as you will tell from the other negative reviews. And making me out to be a demanding customer is just a complete misrepresentation. I certainly wasn't expecting anybody to be responsible for what is described by the owner as 'my 'illness' (type 1 diabetes). But I do expect when I've paid nearly £40 for a meal that we would be advised we would be waiting an hour and a half, rather than gaslighting the customer into saying that they should have known this. Oh and I'm not sure why she feels the need to mention us asking to move tables. Which incidentally was once. We asked to move once to a different table, which was less cramped than the first one, which they completely agreed with. It was empty. And caused them no issue as they didn't even wipe it. Not sure why this would have been a problem but...hey ho. And yes, the 'free' drinks were the only good thing about us completely wasting our afternoon. If you want to be treated with any kind of respect, small business or not, please go elsewhere. Looks like my mouth will have to remain lonely forever after a shoddy experience at this place. It was extremely chaotic and grubby. We waited over an hour for our food order, having asked after 45 minutes how long it would be, they just kept casually saying '5 minutes'. When over an hour had passed, they said that it would still be another 15 minutes. This was after being prompted again and not information that was readily provided to us. I had already had insulin for my diabetes so it would have been dangerous to wait any longer, so we had to just ask for a refund. We were also told that we 'should have known' it would take this long as it was busy. Ummm...if we hadn't been told this information, how would we know? Informing your customers that there was a wait on food would have allowed us to make an informed choice, but we never had that information & she just kept arguing with us about how it was not unreasonable to wait for over an hour for food. I'm all for small businesses and I never leave bad reviews unless it's truly warranted, but there are so many good small businesses in Bristol, I would genuinely take your lonely mouth elsewhere.

My companion got the special tuna set with rice, miso soup, kimchi and seaweed while I chose the French toast. The toast was very soft, the compote was tart and accompanies the dish well. I think I would prefer a savoury choice next time. They offer chazuke (rice with tea/broth) and other light brunch options. Price is not bad for the quality you get. The only suggestion I have is to have more ventilation. I was sat by the kitchen on the bigger bench and my eyes stung with the smoke.

I understand this new gem on Gloucester Road is a female led start up which makes me love it even more ❤️ It is amazing and I’m happy to become a regular xxx

This is by far the best independent cafe in the Bristol area. The food absolutely impeccable and tasty, drinks are crafted to perfection and the staff are always welcoming and friendly. My personal favourite dish is the Tofu breakfast, and you HAVE to try their cakes 😍 you will not regret the visit

Delicious food with new flavours and excellent service. Had a nice cold drink too. The french toast was by far my favourite and it’s hard to find a better one in Bristol I think!

Delicious! I have come here a couple of times. First visit I tried the special, a creamy, velvety, salty, udon cabonara. My partner had the ochazuke which I of course also had to have a spoon of. Both dishes were fantastic, although took a while to come out. The cafe is new and it was a busy weekend, and so assumed they were still tweaking the efficiency in the kitchen. The food was well worth the wait anyway! My second visit was solo, on a Wednesday. I didn't need to wait long to hoon down my Japanese brekkie. It's a well thought out dish, keeping the customer's taste buds in mind: Plenty of Japanese flavours but not 100% traditional i.e. I'm so glad natto is not on the menu! 😅 The atmosphere is chill and the tunes are great. I look forward to coming back!

Amazing food 🤩🙌🏻 This is the third time I’ve come back for the Japanese breakfast. Cosy atmosphere. They need more staff, I came on a Sunday and almost felt I couldn’t order from the overwhelmed staff on the bar as they tried to clear tables man the til and make drinks as the queue only kept growing out the door.

Absolute gem of a café/restaurant. I've been twice, once for a brunch by myself and then a second time for coffee and pastries with my husband and two youngish children. Both delightful experiences. I highly recommend Lonely Mouth. Delicious, great vibes, superb service xx

Food is banging and a totally different style of Japanese food to other Japanese spots in Bristol at the moment. Tunes are on point and Liv (the owner) is a sweetheart who is so passionate about what she does. I could mainline that Ube cream.

The yummiest brunch! I had the salmon and it was cooked to perfection. Great portion sizes and good value in my opinion. Really great atmosphere, loads of drink options. I can’t wait to come back and try the toasties.

The ambiance and music were lovely and I loved the chazuke rice especially! I ordered the matcha strawberry cream drink and the only problem I had was that it was about half full with ice, which made it watery on the top, and the icecubes were big, so it was difficult to mix the strawberry cream into the drink and get to the best part at the bottom! If possible maybe offer ice to be optional or use less/smaller ice. The curry sandwich was good also!

As someone who’s travelled to Japan for multiple times, I can confidently say that the food is not the most authentic Japanese food that you can find. However, the listening cafe concept is great, and the food served is definitely very unique to the Bristol food scene. The crispy tofu breakfast tastes amazing, but will be better if a greater variety of flavours is offered in the meal (the same seasoning is used for both the rice and the tofu). The music is relaxing despite being a bit loud - great if you’re working alone but not very helpful if you’re trying to hold a conversation. Would like to visit again and try out the chazuke next!

Beautiful restaurant, gorgeous and vibrant atmosphere and food experience, reasonable prices. I absolutely recommend! The traditional breakfast tray took a bit long to arrive (30+ minutes) and would’ve liked more attention / service from the staff, they were also out of salmon unfortunately. Would’ve given it 5/5 if not for those things, but amazing otherwise and food is worth the wait. I would keep coming back if I lived close!

LOVED the food, the spicy plum tofu is a must try even if you're not vegetarian/vegan! The tuna special was also delicious, can't fault the food at all. Staff is very nice as well, and we couldn't stop looking at the owner's cute dog - what a treat having him around. I think we were there on a really busy Saturday so there was a lot going on around us; can't wait to come back for a more chill atmosphere next time, I need to try the ube cake that looked incredible.

I have been here a few times now. The food is unbelievable. One of the best brunches in Bristol I’d say. So different to anything else you’d normally get and the vegan option is amazing - the tofu is unreal. (Plenty of non vegan options too though.) The coffee is perfect too, even down to the cute mugs it’s served in. I’ve had a matcha drink as well which was refreshing and delicious. I just need to try the toasty if I can ever swerve from the breakfast!

Had a little catchup with my friend at lonely mouth and we got some iced matcha and toasties. The katsu and cheese toasty sounds weird, but it is AMAZING!!! It is also vegetarian! So filling as well. The kimchi toasty comes at second place for me, but my friend actually preferred it over the katsu one. The iced matcha with strawberry cream was very good, I personally would have enjoyed more strawberry cream as it did get mixed in. The dining ware is beautiful. The general aesthetic of the place is so calming, they even have a lovely little vinyl corner. Would definitely come back to try their desserts and Japanese breakfast.

Great music, great food. Very different. If you're tired of avocado on toast, go and sample Lonely Mouth. Small menu but big flavours. As a family of four, we spent £80 on food and one drink each. Everything was correct, but the food was great. Delicious pickles, nicely cooked rice, an okay miso soup, a spicy sauce offered with the food that wasn't spicy, and a very well-cooked and flavoursome piece of salmon. Everything was delicious and made with care and arrived promptly. All accompanied by great tunes. We will be back to try other dishes like the toasties. What a great idea and concept. I hope they get some success out of a tricky location. Go and pay them a visit.

My girlfriend and I had our first experience here this Sunday, where we tried the limited tuna belly over rice. Truly an incredible meal, from the perfect seasoning of the miso soup, to the insane quality of the fish (easily the highest grade tuna I’ve had in the UK), to the perfect portion sizes. The ambience was great, felt very cozy and the music was relaxing and not overly loud that it detracted from the mood. Bonus points for the cutest dog running around and stealing attention from everyone. Genuinely looking forward to the next time we go back!

Love it here, whenever somebody visits me in Bristol, I take them here for breakfast and they are always blown away. Staff are lovely, atmosphere is fantastic with the chill music, often very relaxing hip-hop. The drinks are great, with plenty of options both familiar and a little bit more unique. The food is, undoubtedly, some of the best I have ever had and definitely the best breakfast I can find in Bristol. It just makes me feel happy and my soul lights up whenever I have it. If you are in Bristol, weather visiting or you're a local, you owe it to yourself to try this. Especially if you like any kind of Asian cusine.

I was so gutted!! people have been raving about this place but the best thing was the decor. the treats we had were so dry, it was a cookie pie and a filled cookie, I feel like maybe they had been out for a while in the heat?? I couldn't finish mine. the coffee was mid, towards the end it tasted like they had either reheated the milk or the milk was gone off. we also had a matcha with strawberry cream I think cost like £6+, the entire glass was full of ice and there might have been like 3 mouthfuls of the actual drink in there. and the matcha was premade :( I was so sad!! the girls really didn't seem interested in serving anyone which was also really disheartening. I loved the decor but it felt like all style and no substance. I can't say what the cooked food is like since we didn't have it but hopefully it's the saving grace of this place. the entire thing was £21 and honestly I feel a bit scammed.

It has been a much appreciated and loved stable establishment at St Michael's Hill. Can I please request that you start accepting card payments, without asking for an extra charge (£1) in line with most businesses circa 2025.
