Dined here, as staying in hotel and did not fancy walking into Campbeltown to find a restaurant so it was easier to stay put. Booked for 7.30 but they called us to put us back to 8.30 as they had a party booked in. They then call our room at around 7.20 to ask can we come now but no as we weren't ready. Agreed we'd come asap around 7.45. Party of 10 had grown to 14 and were very very noisy. Couldn't here ourselves speak. My starter of scallops, expensive but tasted fine. My halibut was tasty and enjoyed the meal. One of my sisters thought the langoustines were overcooked and again expensive. Steaks and lasagne were eaten with my sisters saying yes all good. Service all good and then breakfast in the morning. Menu very good, service a bit haphazard but friendly waitress and all enjoyed that meal too.

A group of six had dinner at this restaurant a few weeks ago. The food was adequate but the service horrific. The waitress refused to take our drink order until our entrees were served. She delivered the wrong food to the table several times. She asked the name of our party about a dozen times during the meal. When we asked if the bill presented included a service charge, she said none was required. Then, after we paid, she said we forgot the service charge! What a nightmare.

On the plus side this small hotel has very well equipped rooms. We had the room overlooking the Loch which was spacious and light with comfortable seating . Outside there are benches where you can have a drink overlooking the Loch. There was a lot of choice for breakfast but we just had the fruit salad which was the best with lots of strawberries and blueberries. The evening meal was good especially the scallops and langoustines though my fish main course was disappointing. A bit dry and overcooked I can't remember what my husband had but I do remember him enjoying it.The staff at meal times were helpful and friendly. On the down side our reception ,by the owner I assume, was not overly friendly and a little curt. The restaurant I would call an old fashioned guest house dining room. The decor somewhat spoilt by shiny bright blue table cloths. I would not visit Campbeltown again but if you have to go there it is a pleasant place to stay.

Lovely setting starters we're good that's the positive We arrived and were shown into a small side room away from the main resturant as we were a six and they already had a booking for six so had no room. Couldn't see this myself but accepted it. After starters mains arrived and 2 were wrong. Pot chicken pie with filo pastry came with mash potato on top. (Someone did mention only go if you like patato) Seafood platter ordered seafood pie came when we told the staff got told we would like the pie better as it was much nicer. No offer to change no apology made. Then the best bit 15% service charge on bill. It's a resturant in Campbeltown not bloody London. So if I'm paying 15% on a £190 bill I expect good service and more importantly get what I ordered Never go back until the owners pull their heads out their own ar*es

I had booked a table at 6.30pm. Arrived a few minutes early and was told to sit in either of the dining rooms. Decor was a little old fashioned but great views across the bay, Waited a short time before menus arrived, drinks order taken. A short while later the food order was completed. Unfortunately things went downhill from here. The starters took 25 minutes to arrive but the saving grace was it was a very generous and nicely served prawn cocktail. But the mains didn't arrive for over an hour. This was despite two attempts to ask the only waitress working if things could be speeded up - she was very pleasant and stated that only her and chef were working. And that she had been pressed into action to cook a steak! The mains eventually arrived at around 8.10 pm. Again, the food presented was very good but the wait was unacceptable. Other tables also had a long wait and were making similar complaints. The waitress stated she'd take something off the bill, but after the bill took over 15 minutes to arrive I left a cash sum of what I thought the service was worth and left. The owner seemed to hide in a rather odd cupboard off of the main hallway. Quite amusing really, It's a shame as with some TLC this could be a beautiful spot. My advice would be to hire some more FoH staff, and some help in the kitchen. Or sell up to someone who wants to actually provide some service. Two stars as the food and wine was of a good standard.

Some very suspicious reviews here. We were a party of six, including a GM and a sales manager of two high-end restaurants in Edinburgh. Both of them agreed that the food was excellent, with the seafood platter including some of the best shellfish they'd ever had. The rest of us all thought that the food was very good, with a decent choice and also good-sized portions. The drinks menu, especially the whiskies, was pretty extensive and the prices were extremely reasonable. Service was friendly, and the view from the window was lovely, looking over the loch. The next time we're in Campbeltown, we'd be happy to eat here, with it being preferable to the other two places we've been.

After reading many positive reviews and seeing an exciting looking specials menu, we booked a table on a Sunday evening. There was absolutely no need to book as it was only us and one other couple in the whole dining area. The tone of the evening was set immediately by the lack of atmosphere on entry. Absolute silence, no music to offset the lack of diners. We ordered scallops and the salmon platter to start. The scallops came with the roe still attached, not something I’d expect for the price of the dish. The smoked salmon on the platter was lovely, but the mussels came without their shells - something I’ve never experienced in any restaurant let alone one in a seafood town, and definitely made me question how fresh they were. Mains were not much better. I ordered monkfish from the specials menu, which consisted of two small pieces of monkfish plopped on top of a mountain of mashed potato, possibly of the instant variety. The fish was rubbery and my knife struggled to cut through it. My partner ordered the fish pie after much deliberation between several mouth watering sounding options on the menu. There was around 2 inches of mashed potato topping a small amount of fish, which strangely tasted of ham & lentil soup. This potato-topped dish game with roast potatoes on the side, and an accompanying plate of vegetables which included yet more potatoes. This time boiled, along with part cooked carrots. Being Scottish, we do love a good tattoo, but this was a bit much. The chips I ordered to accompany my fish were wonderful, a testament to the chef’s obvious potato dish abilities. I had been looking forward to a cheese platter for dessert, but after the first two courses we opted to bail out and visit the local Co-Op for an ice cream just to be safe. Overall, the food was edible, but absolutely not worth the price we paid. We could have eaten better at Wetherspoons for a fraction of the price. The dated decor would have been forgiven if the food had been any kind of satisfying. The Blu-Tack on the only toilet lid really just topped the night of beautifully. The waitress was absolutely faultless, service a little slow for how quiet it was, but not her fault at all. If you have money to burn, a love of potatoes and a lack of tastebuds, I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant.

This was incredibly disappointing. The atmosphere was drab and dull, the service was mediocre and the food left a lot to be desired. The starter of clam chowder was nice but the crusty bread was soft and had been microwaved. Then the main was appalling. £26 for the seafood platter - was so excited for this as for the price expected something good. The langoustines still had the intestinal tract in them and were luke warm, there were no mussels and the scallops were also luke warm. The chips were burnt and the onion rings undercooked, a rather unusual talent from the chef. Other member's food were also luke warm, when we complained we were offered some money off but no apology. Don't think they cared to be completely honest. Also they sell coke for £2.20 a can and they were clearly marked as a multipack item and not for resale, mentioned this to the waitress and she was rather unenthused about it. Avoid this overly expensive and personality-drained "restaurant" and go elsewhere.

Looked on web very comfortable. However was very disappointed when we arrived. Albeit it had been a lovely old house in its day and has some history. The place now looks very tired and in need of much work. Overall it did look quite neglected. The serving staff was very pleasant and the breakfast was fine and offered quite a choice. It was overpriced for the decor and facilities.

The staff were very friendly. Upon checkin, if you intend to dine in house, (and we had a very nice dinner there) you should indicate what time you would like to be seated so they can manage their table arrangements. Also, since a full Scottish breakfast is included, you should tell them what time you would like to eat for the same above seating reason. The menu was quite extensive given the hotel has less than 15 rooms. The breakfast offered everything from cereal/fruits to bacon, eggs, black pudding, sausage, tomatoes, beans and of course white or wheat bread. The wait staff were very friendly, but a bit rushed with the full house we had the night we stayed. There is a bit of history attached to this hotel which you will want to read about during your stay.

We’ve been coming to Campbeltown for 20 years however, have never eaten here. Decided to visit after searching for a fish restaurant in this area. Lovely location, especially in good weather, where a lovely view can be had on some basic beer garden furniture at the front of the hotel. The food was brilliant. The service not the same standard. Freshly made and excellent quality. A few tweaks with service and decor and this place could be outstanding! A bit of history along with the building in that it used to be the maternity hospital. It is lovely, worth a visit for a beautiful meal. A little more attention to detail with the service, all would be grand!

Still in shock about this one. I could fill a book about the events that unfolded during our recent family visit to Craigard, however I do not wish to waste too much of my time. After waiting for 2 hours for dinner to be served and watching the whole dining room being served 3 courses, I asked to speak to the owner to ask if they though that this was acceptable? I am still waiting on the answer to that question. Instead I was bombarded with quotes like ‘some people are just moaners’, ‘b****r off out of the dining room’ ‘you can still stay the night, I just asked you to leave the dining room’, ‘I can’t deal with this’….. It’s a shame as the hotel is nice and the staff are brilliant, it’s just a pity about the owners who lack communication skills and diplomacy in such situations. I have read through a few other reviews of the hotel and it appears that everything is ok until something goes wrong. I have also read the owners replies and look forward to them blaming the whole situation on me. What I would appreciate is an answer to my original question: do you think that it is acceptable to wait for 2 hours for dinner to be served when a whole dining room has been fed 3 courses?

We had the good fortune to be taken to this Hotel by our friends who live in the area, and what a pleasure it was. Quirky and homely is the best description I can give. We were greeted warmly by the owners who showed us into a homely comfortable lounge where we were offered drinks and menus to peruse at our leisure. We were then shown into the dining room to our table in the bay window with a superb panoramic view over the harbour. We had starter, main, and sweet, and we all agreed that it would be very difficult to surpass in terms of the excellent friendly and timely service, the quality, and the tasty ample portions. Coffee was then served in the lounge. I would most certainly recommend this small restaurant to anyone visiting the area, but phone and book first to avoid disappointment. These are the facts. I stopped by the hotel mid-afternoon and made a 7:45 reservation, arranged in person with the manager, who suggested that time as she had some earlier bookings. We arrived on time, were seated in the lounge, and quickly ordered our food and drinks. Not until 9 pm were we seated, and we were not served any food until 9:15. Other than our initial drink orders, no food, drink, explanation or apology was offered to us during that delay. More insulting, the staff studiously averted their eyes and ignored us each time they walked past the door of the lounge. Half way through the delay, I asked the manager what the problem was and when we would be seated. She replied only, and coldly, that they were serving others that had arrived before us, and then walked away. As we were leaving, the assistant manager explained that the restaurant could not serve us because some local residents -- i.e., not tourists like us -- had walked in at 7:30 without reservations, and were seated and served because they had to serve their local customers first." What a disrespectful explanation on top of rude treatment. Had they offered us only a 9 pm seating when we booked, or had they informed us when we arrived that we would wait for 90 minutes, we would have gone elsewhere. Had they simply explained and apologized during the delay and offered us a piece of bread and a glass of water, we would have been unhappy but understanding. But to simply ignore us and put us off until it was too late for us to go elsewhere was plainly intentional, and duplicitous and insulting. My advice to visitors to Kintyre is to take your business anywhere but here. The management is a embarassment to Campbeltown.

But I suppose I might be biased as I was, after all, born in Craigard house...I`m very wary of single, highly negative, reviews, especially in light of the widely reported "reviewing blackmail" possibility. i.e. "Unless you give me my meal free, I`ll write a bad review". We were dropped off by taxi, and were shown into a guest room with a tv. We both looked at each other and wondered had we done the right thing - could we run after and stop the taxi?! This set up reminded us of a guesthouse common room, although it was cosy and had a beautiful view. To be honest, we were a wee bit out of our comfort zone, as we've never been taken into this kind of surrounding to wait to enter a restauraant and have our order taken. However, the wine list and menu were very promising, so we decided to stay. After ordering, we were shown into the restaurant, as our starters were ready. The starter, main and pudding did not disappoint. The food was excellent, and the sticky toffee pudding was the lightest I've ever eaten. I urge anyone visitng Campbeltown to eat here. There was not one morsel eaten that we could have complained about. The place appears to be more guest house with a licence, but it is a 3 star small hotel, and quite rightly so as the food more than makes up for it. We stayed at The Royal in Campbeltown, and that was a lovely hotel, but when we come back to the area, we will definiately be staying here. I searched for restaurants in Cambeltown and this one did not come up, perhaps because I had no idea the place had a separate name from the hotel, it is only the hotel dining room really, so my review has been posted on the main Hotel listing on Tripadvisor – not going to repeat myself so check it out there.

This house restaurant has a extensive menu and very good food! The service was great and caring. Also, there is a adorable dog at the hotel that will make your night.

Was expecting great quality fresh food . But very disappointed . Looking forward to local mussels but off the menu . Scallops were fresh but the sauce let it down and the bread was stale and expensive . Both in the end had fish and chips , that was two very small pieces of fish each , couldn't hardly see any fish , most likely frozen due to the texture and appearance . Staff were excellent and beer was good

What an absolute find. This place was amazing in every way. The staff are welcoming, friendly and so attentive. The food was out of this world. Would definitely recommend 100% and will be back. Just wish we had found it at the start of our holiday and not at the end

Met up with a friend for lunch today. ALWAYS reliably happy with our meals at The Esplanade over the many years.... But today's young chef was very astute with his skills. We had *Cullen skink, the baguette was fresh and warmed....so often it is not; (it's the little things like this that make you come back,), *fish n chips, and *incredibly chunky steak pie, with a lid rising up to the ceiling I'm my opinion all 3 meals really were the best examples on the island. Well done to: *The Esplanade for keeping up the standards of quality which bring people back * The Chef * The always friendly and helpful waitress 😁 (Love the new curtains and furnishings 😁)
