Food is lovely, but the service is really poor. The staff really couldn’t keep on top of the ordering, and seemed to prioritise orders coming in online for delivery. We were the first table there before it got busy and waited a long time get everything. Several tables came and went in the time we were there, and it seemed very much our orders were forgotten about. They obviously need more staff and better system for managing orders. We ended up there an hour later than we planned, affecting our onward plans for the evening which was a shame. They also add a substantial service charge to the bill, and they did a bit of rounding up with payment amounts which, given the poor & slow service, was rather taking liberties. Disappointing as an experience.

What a find! Tucked away in a courtyard off George Street is this absolute gem. It was like being on holiday, our table on cobble stones with fairy lights and a buzzy but not crowded setting. The owner made the evening - being totally himself, funny, authentic and a pleasure to be alongside but ultimately the food was the star. Goats cheese bruscetta was outstanding, the pizzas crispy with no stinting on the toppings and everyone of our table of 8 was delighted with their food. Just a joy.

Absolutely fantastic dinner. A good wide and traditional Italian menu with some stuff we want to go back and try. A real find. Great authentic Italian food and very friendly service. Like being back in Italy. A really great and crisp rosemary and salt pizza bread served with as part of the antipasto was followed by delicious pasta dishes and dessert.

I've been to quite a few restaurants in St. Albans, but this is easily the worst one I've been to so far. Don't get me wrong, the restaurant felt very authentic -but I left feeling let down and frustrated with the service and food. I ordered the Linguine al Pesto and much to my disappointment it was the smallest portion of food, probably fit more for a child. Maybe it's because its egg pasta, but for the price (£17.50) - definitely not worth it. The strands of linguine also felt almost crunchy and undercooked. After, I ordered a tiramisu and the waiter assumed we were sharing. I guess it's nice for them to think of both of us, but ultimately I would have preferred just a single portion for myself. It also cost £8 and it tastes a bit off. We didn't get checked up on, ignored at points and the general atmosphere felt comfortable. I left feeling hungry and had to have a second dinner, this is not a good sign after going to an italian restaurant. Definitely won't be coming back.

This adorable little restaurant blew me away. It's warm, friendly owners and staff were a welcome change in comparison to many restaurants. And the food was absolutely incredible. I had pizza and my wife had fresh pasta. Both were perfect! Literally brought me back to being a boy, and eating my Nonna's food. It reminded me of that scene in Ratatouille when the Food critic gets a nostalgia memory of being a boy. My wife was confused when I was eating in silence while staring into the void... my face looking more and more emotional. Anyway, I highly recommend. Also not badly priced. Lol.

Although we had email confirmation for 8pm they did not have our booking. They squeezed us in, tables were very close together, just inches apart. It took 30 mins for drinks to arrive. After 60 mins I was told my main was not available and I would have to have lamb. We asked how long it would take as we had already waited 1 hour with no food and were told that’s ok you have your starters to come yet! Staters arrived at 9.20 pm and were not good. Our mains arrived at 9.45. My husband had ordered a pasta dish and they brought a bowl of mussels and prawns, no pasta. They offered to change it but we were not prepared to wait any longer as starving. We offered to pay for our wine and awful starters but were told not to worry. The evening was like a Fawlty Towers experience. Just made it to Nando’s before they closed to get some food. Not what we had hoped for on our night away but at least it was tasty and the staff went out of their way to help us.

We split our bill evenly, the owner decided to round each of our payment up to the nearest pound, on top of the 12.5% service charge, just to get an extra few £s off us, cheeky man 👎🏽 The menu online is not the same as the one in the restaurant, be prepared to not have what you’re after. Wouldn’t advise getting the Tutto pizza, it was just pepperoni, olives and mushroom. Not ‘all toppings’ as advertised. One of the more expensive pizza but tastes subpar. Restaurant lacked proper ventilation, the pizza oven makes it smokey and eyes watery in there.

Hidden Italian restaurant down George Street. The old man that works there is super friendly and works so hard. Seems like he is the owner and the others working there are his children and grandchildren? But he takes orders himself. Impressive. Ordered a main each and then a tiramisu for dessert. I ordered the salmon pasta for main. The restaurant got a little smokey. My eyes were watering every now and then because of the smoke from the pizza oven. We were sat on the table next to the entrance of the toilet, so there was a light cool breeze every now and then. Overall would recommend, but a bit more expensive than other Italian restaurants around St. Albans. But we found this restaurant last minute and they had availability (maybe because it’s a bit more hidden).

Food had potential to be lovely - plate looked lovely (I had pasta with clams) but mine and my friends homemade green pasta arrived very al dente... I know it's got to have a little 'bite' to it, but it was definitely undercooked! My dish was also very salty and covered in chopped chillies (too many), as was my friends dish, which we both had to pick out. Given the price tag, was very disappointed - need better attention to detail

A nice little Italian. The food is very good and really well cooked, expect the pizza. For an Authentic Italian restaurant, the pizza is sloppy and undercooked. I've had pizza twice, I assumed the first time was just a one off but I ordered a pizza the second time and it was the same. No crunch to the base and too much cheese. I refuse to believe an Italian person cooks these pizzas. Someone at the table next to us said the same. I had minimal toppings too. A Margherita and a Funghi so there really isn't any excuse. The flavour was there but I would expect much much more from an authentic Italian restaurant . Other than that, the rest of the food was incredible. The pasta dishes were some of the best I have ever had and the service was great (again, very authentic). If you feel you need to be coddled and have your hand held, you probably dont want a proper Italian restaurant . Lovely people and great food. We will continue to visit but I really wish they would make more effort to get the pizza right. Less toppings and longer in the oven.

First visit to this restaurant following a friend's recommendation. Situated in a quiet backwater in the heart of St Albans, we found this authentic Italian restaurant run by an Italian family. There was a very extensive a la carte menu and at reasonable prices. There were four of us and following garlic wine we all chose different mains of pizza, spaghetti and lamb in red wine. All dishes were plentiful and delicious and were value for money. I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant.

We had booked for my brother in law's birthday & arrived to be told the booking system allowed double bookings so our table had been given to another party. So why have a booking system? Totally pointless. Went to Thai Rack across the road and had a great evening. And a week later, despite emailing the restaurant to share her disappointment, my sister in law has received no response.

The evening was extremely hectic with customers already disgruntled around the restaurant when we arrived. We waited half an hour just to order drinks. Apparently they were a waiter down but there was no form of apology for the slow/lack of service. When we eventually did have a drink order taken I asked the staff member if they thought it was a good idea to stay and he said ‘well it’s up to you’. A man, who I presume was the owner made the environment more uncomfortable with his blatant disrespect of a female member of staff. Calling her ‘the girl’, shouting at her, being rude and disrespectful. She looked close to tears. I asked her how long she had been working there and she said two weeks to which I advised her to find a different job! Food was fine but hugely overpriced. I asked for the service charge to be taken off the bill.

The restaurant felt noticeably understaffed, for context it was 8pm on a Saturday night so we expected it to be busy (but could argue if you can't handle a restaurant at max capacity then maybe need more staff to help...) Started off with a 55 minute wait for drinks! (1 bottle of beer and 1 bottle of coke). Our two Pizzas arrived after probably 1hr 20. The pizza was okay. Not the best, not the worst.

Absolutely terrible experience here two days ago. The old waiter had no clue and was rude when taking orders, snatching menus off everyone and not even listening. Food came very late over 45minutes. Some dishes were cold and had to be sent back more than once. Some dishes came incorrect due to the old waiter not listening properly. Two people in our group didn't even get food at all as they claimed to have run out of the specific pasta. Only blessing was we received a refund off the messed up orders and those not received. Also didn't pay service charge. Would not recommend this place when it's busy at all!

As written by my wife: St Albans isn't exactly short of restaurants, especially Italian ones. We chose Locanda Bagutta for an early dinner before a show at the Roman amphitheatre because it looked like the most authentic and its menu had the most appealing selection of pizzas (always a good option when you need a quick meal). Unfortunately, we did not have a good experience, and ultimately felt extremely ripped off. It is authentic, certainly - run by an Italian family with multiple generations all taking part. However, things didn't get off to a good start when we were told on being seated that we couldn't order any pizza for at least half an hour, as the pizza oven was busy with a mass order (60 pizzas for takeaway for a wedding). Given that an order that size would likely have been placed months ahead, I would have hoped to have been pre-warned when I phoned the restaurant that morning to book our table. Yes, the rest of the menu offers a broad variety of pastas, meat and fish dishes. But you don't expect to come to a restaurant to find half the menu unavailable. We began with a portion of olives. When the bowl arrived, we were astonished to find that our £4.50 had purchased precisely 6 olives. That's 75p per olive. Granted, they were large olives, but imagine sharing that portion amongst a table of 4 people - one and a half olives per person. Moving on to the main meal, we didn't fancy pasta, so went for other dishes. None of the mains quite appealed to me so I chose two starters: melanzane parmigiana and gamberetti piccante. In fairness, both dishes were very tasty. The aubergine parmigiana was rich and warming, the aubergine creamily soft and smothered in lashings of melty cheese. The prawns were leaning slightly towards overcooked but not badly so, and the tomato sauce was full flavoured with a decent bite of chilli. However, serving the butterflied prawns still in their shells (legs and all) when they're smothered in sauce does not make for easy eating. I found myself eating bits of shell and leg as I couldn't see whether I had successfully removed them all from the prawns as I went along. Being starters, the portion size was quite dainty, so I did still feel somewhat hungry afterwards - especially given their prices (£12.50 and £13.50 respectively). My husband, meanwhile, went for the Pollo Milanese. Now, whenever we have had any meat (be it chicken, pork, or veal) "Milanese" in any Italian restaurant anywhere in the world, it has meant an escalope of the relevant meat, hammered out thinly, crumbed and fried, and served with a generous heap of spaghetti in tomato sauce at the side. So we were quite surprised when our waiter asked my husband if he wanted any potatoes along with his £18 chicken Milanese. Seeing our blank looks, the waiter suggested some spaghetti with tomato sauce, which my husband accepted - not quite sure at this point whether there would be a separate charge for it. When it came, the chicken arrived on a large plate, atop a superfluous and sad looking lettuce leaf, while the spaghetti was brought on a separate side dish. Both tasted good, with the chicken tender and crisply crumbed, and the spaghetti nicely al dente. To our dismay, though, the parmesan offered to sprinkle on the spaghetti was not freshly grated but looked like the powder version you get in a tub in the supermarket. My husband drank diet coke because he was driving, while I had a glass of red wine (Dolcetto d'Alba). I had to send the first glass back as it tasted oxidised - like the bottle had been sitting open for too long. To their credit, the waitress readily replaced it with a new glass from a fresh bottle. I don't think we have ever felt so ripped off by a restaurant. For 6 olives, 2 starters, 1 main course with a side, a glass of wine and a diet coke, and a 12.5% service charge, we were charged £75.37!!! And that side dish of spaghetti for with the £18 piece of chicken? That cost £7.50?! We'd be surprised if the ingredients for that quantity of spaghetti and tomato sauce cost more than 50p.

I had to send the first glass back as it tasted oxidised - like the bottle had been sitting open for too long. To their credit, the waitress readily replaced it with a new glass from a fresh bottle. A note on atmosphere - Locanda Bagutta is based in a lovely old building with wooden beamed ceiling - but the over loud Italian radio playing on speakers in the ceiling feels intrusive and isn't exactly conducive to a relaxing dinner conversation. And our table being tucked in a corner next to a storage cupboard would have been fine, had the kitchen staff not needed to open the cupboard door to retrieve ingredients during our dinner. The door is a sliding one, so we didn't have to get up to allow them access, but it was irritating nonetheless. Having to dash to the theatre, we didn't have time for dessert, so just got our bill after the mains. Our feelings about value may have been totally different had we been able to order pizza, as most of the pizzas on the menu seemed reasonably priced, and we wouldn't have needed the ridiculous spaghetti side dish. But someone else's 60 takeaway pizzas meant we didn't get to find out. So yes, the chef at Locanda Bagutta can cook. And yes, it is an authentic family-run Italian restaurant. But no, it is not worth the money, not by a long shot. And no, we will not be returning.

I would say the food here is average. I had black ink seafood pasta, other than two squid rings, the rest of the seafood was chopped up so finely I couldn’t see what I was having, and the seafood portion was minimal. The tiramisu was lovely, best of all the desserts. The cheesecake mild in taste but light and fluffy. The orange dessert was hard to understand what it was (no menu waiter just tried to describe it) and it was caramizled oranges slices and ice cream so I was disappointed when I realised that’s all it was. Cute decor, feels like being in a small Italian place in Italy itself. Friendly staff. The rest of the group described their pasta dishes as “ok” also

Last night I return to what was our favourite sport to witness a horrific situation which with what I can tell included a heavily pregnant lady and who seem to be the owner of the restaurant. To what I witnessed this lady was being verbally attacked in front of the whole restaurant which was full with customers which all became very of where of the situation that was occurring. To watch seemed the lady and the owner speaking another language with my l lack of acknowledgement of the language they were speaking it was clear anyone to see that he was aggressive in his tone towards the lady which led to her also shouting back. Not only was she distressed this happened in front of her kids where she left the restaurant in tears as a returning customer to see the management treat a pregnant customer in this manner I will definitely not be returning they have lost a returning customer of three years. This is not how a man especially the owner who is the face of the restaurant treats a heavily pregnant lady in front of a room full of customers which not only humiliated her left her in tears leaving the property. This is no longer a favourite spot, it’s is to be ignored and hopefully stop anyone else being disrespected and humiliated. The man should learn from his actions not to treat any of his customers in that way I am shocked to the core to what I had witnessed I had only come to place an order for food and left with such saddening disappointment. Sickening

We were just wondering around and saw this beautiful alleyway underneath various strung lights, we walked to the front of this quaint restaurant and were greeted by a wide smile and friendly service from this vibrant and cheerful girl. The staff were great all night especially this charismatic older gentleman who I think was called Giuliano. We weren't experts on wine so we were advised on the best one by a waitress who gave us tasters based on our preference. The service was reasonably fast and made us feel very at ease. The two young male waiters were very familiar, polite and helpful. We will definitely return to these loveable characters and delicious food.

The establishment had wooden beams stuffed with white expanding foam. Food was over priced and bland. Starters seemed like leftovers Tsatziki, with dill, perhaps they had run out of mint and the aubergine subermerged in 3 mm of oil. Mains pasta with truffle at £23...

Terrific restaurant. Very good food and service. Amazing atmosphere. Maybe it was just that it was a warm and cosy day and with the seating in the passageway, you could almost imagine a narrow cobbled street somewhere in Tuscany.....

Great pasta and burrata but service was frantic and a bit slow. Have just been again. Ordered pizza and would have loved a napoli style pizza but was just all melted cheese.

Want a little taste of classic Italy, then look no further! Great prices, proper authentic food you’d get in Italy, friendly and flexible team, no fuss and great for families - they have the typical Italian love, appreciation and welcome for children - their pizzas came out with bear shaped faces, ears eyes etc, which they all loved! A great staple regular restaurant for us and will be for all families.

Beautiful venue, great atmosphere and really friendly staff! However there is room to improve on some areas, which I am sure can be fixed as I would love to give the place another go. - my partner’s pizza plate was chipped in a few places with an actual loose bit of plate there when served - thankfully he noticed and did not accidentally eat it. This is a serious health hazard and all damaged plates have to be chucked. - desserts were not great unfortunately. Tiramisu was dry, lacking in flavour and the mascarpone layer was really thin. My partner’s chocolate and pear tart oddly did not taste of either of the main ingredients. May come back to try pasta next time, but will give it a while.

Awful. Been to this restaurant before and it was lovely - today it was awful. Got to the restaurant just after 7PM and was told the kitchen was closing at 9PM so would have to order asap. We had only just arrived and weren't ready to order. The waiter stood by our table and watched us read over the menu. The pizza was mediocre. I was more impressed by my pizza a few nights before at Wetherspoons. The cherry on top was going inside where the waiters were dancing and taking shots - so unprofessional and made me feel uncomfortable.

OMG!!! What a hidden gem! Absolutely loved it! The food was out of this world, deeeelicious! The owner, Antonio, and his team, including Juliano and Michelle, we sooooo welcoming and friendly. The restaurant is perfectly tucked away in George Street, with the benefits of being able to sit outside in the quaint courtyard and enjoy the twinkling lights with a superb glass of wine (or two), finishing with a Lemoncello An amazing night! We will be back - and in numbers! Totally recommend

Delicious food but over priced. We had a birthday, and they brought out a tiramisu with candles which we thought was a lovely touch. When they brought out the bill and we found out they had charged us £7.50 each for a small piece of tiramisu. It was delicious, but not worth anywhere near that amount. A shame as if the prices were less it would be a great restaurant.

My visit exceeded my expectations. Bagutta has a very authentic Italian feel to it and demonstrates how simplicity at its finest can be great. Pizza’s were very good and the pasta dishes cannot be much better. The restaurant being run and managed by Italians is definitely noticeable.

Pizza Express stopped doing my favourite, Calabrese pizza, but I found The Yard and the two pizzas I ordered last night were beautiful. The Hot One and their own Calabrese. Lovely Italian base, awesome meats, proper chillies and a little sweetness, perfect !

This is a cafe inside of a Sainsbury's (stevenage branch) , today they aren't selling toasties because they have "run out of cheese". I guess nobody can be bothered to walk over to the cheese aisle? Ridiculous to run out of ingriedients when they're inside a supermarket.

Great selection of wines and high quality food! The bill can add up fast here but in my opinion it's worth it. Stand out red wine - Ameroni Stand out food - Aubergine Parmigiana, Arancini, Truffle tagliatelle, Sharing Tiramisu (definitely could have eaten this on my own)
