The Yard Pizzeria in St Albans

Pizza Express stopped doing my favourite, Calabrese pizza, but I found The Yard and the two pizzas I ordered last night were beautiful. The Hot One and their own Calabrese. Lovely Italian base, awesome meats, proper chillies and a little sweetness, perfect !

This is a a very nice pizza restaurant, it's small but that adds to it's charm and watching the pizza cooking in the huge stone bake oven.... mesmerising. The staff are very friendly and attentive, they are the best local pizza place, period.

Ordered one simple pepperoni pizza online at 7.08pm with estimate of 45 mins for delivery. Chased at 8.20pm by phone and told it would be out within 10 mins. Finally arrived just after 9.00pm with excuse they were ‘busy’. Pizza itself had thin and soggy base. Won’t be using or recommending in future. Quite expensive too ~ £18.

As a former chef don’t normally get takeout meals but thought as a one off we’ll order a takeaway. Thoroughly impressed with the service and taste of the 2 pizzas we ordered. The lady who took our payment was extremely professional as there was delay with the payment system. Overall good quality ingredients with an authentic taste of Italy.

Need the chef from 2020 back, these recent chefs not a patch. Shame, pizza was burnt and toppings sparingly added.

We have been going to The Yard for years but never again. We waited 3 hours for two pizzas to be delivered. Probably the worst service I’ve ever experienced from a restaurant. No updates to us until we called them. Finally got our delivery at almost 10pm and it was cold. The quality of pizzas has deteriorated over the years anyway and there’s much better local options now.

We stopped off for coffee and a sweet treat with our kids. The staff were super friendly and accommodating. The loaf of bread we took home was divine! The perfect spot for a coffee before/after a walk down the Nickey Line. We will definitely be back and excited for the extended breakfast menu that's coming!

We ordered 2 garlic bread and cheese but only one was delivered. Delicious though

Excellent pizzas, the dough is beautiful and has good vegetarian options. The ambience is very nice , appears to be popular with locals. No on site parking but you can do street parking in the smaller roads next. Service is friendly and easy - it has a nice laidback ambience which is great for an evening dinner

The delivery was late and the pizza arrived cold.

Update: Came here for birthday lunch and we knew it would be nice. We booked a table. We were told we were unexpected by a waitress that doesn't seem to like people. Our starters hadn't come so we had to go and ask as everyone else had food. Everything then came together and was dropped on the table with no care. No cutlery. No serviettes. Food was amazing, if difficult to manage arriving all at one, and one of the owners came over, apologised and offered some cake but we'd been there so long our kids had gone past hungry to tired. Such a shame. Waitress silently took our money and went back to chatting to her friend. Amazing how one person can make such a difference to the dining experience. I really hope things improve in the future. food is always brilliant and quickly served. A great place to take the family.

Pizza is good but DO NOT GET DELIVERY. It will take at least twice the time they tell you it will. 2 hours waiting for a pizza?!! (On 2 separate occasions) No thanks. It's good pizza, but it's not that good.

Swift polite delivery of the perfect pizza!

Two of the pizza’s were lovely, third was burnt. Would have sent it back but had already waited two and half hours for our food. Despite promises that it would be delivered in an hour, then an hour and a half we waited for two and a half hours. We were also told we’d get 50% of our bill which never materialised. Will stick with Nono’s going forward.

Great pizza, salad and tiramisu

Our order took 2 hours to arrive, 1 hour 15 longer than stated. Barely warm when it did arrive. Twice the app said it had been delivered, even though it hadn’t. Can’t imagine we will be ordering again.

Fantastic pizza and service. My only gripe is now, whenever my toddler gets pizza from anywhere else, he is always disappointed that it never compares to Yard Pizza!

Top place. The food is great, the place is very cozy & the staff is lovely! Specially the owner who offered us courtesy drinks & a dessert just because we had to wait 5 minutes for a table, which isn’t much but just the fact that he was so servicial says a lot about this place. Worst service I’ve ever received. The woman took my order 3 times and kept lying to me that my order was next. Kept saying that my pizza was coming. I have no problem with a mistake being made but why keep lying to me about my pizza is in the oven and I’m next for 40 mins. I’ll never go back.

Ordered online, turned up as they were finishing our pizzas off, straight out of the oven and home. They were so tasty, balanced flavours, perfectly made and cooked, just delicious. I'll be going back without a doubt.

Pizzas have been average since the old chef left, the toppings are put on sparingly, really annoying because we used to love this place, but now it's average.

Most amazing pizzas, especially the garlic bread with extra chillies! The staff are brilliant and super helpful!

Order was delivered more than half an hour after suggested delivery window (around 1.5 hrs after order was placed) and pretty much cold. Tried the “text back” update on the app and no response, phoned the restaurant to chase and got an update but not a single “sorry it’s late”.

Came on Saturday night as a last minute decision and I’m so happy I did, the service was amazing, the pizza is to die for and the waitress Jess? Was so friendly and helpful, she knew so much about the menu and helped me choose.

This is my new favourite place. We came here as a last minute decision but I’m so glad we did. The food was absolutely amazing, the service was great with the young lady that served us being very kind, helpful and attentive and making suggestions when we weren’t sure what to order….I really like this, it shows someone that knows what they’re talking about. The prices are also very reasonable! Will definitely be back!

Fantastic service. Delicious pizza cooked in front of us and on our table within 10 minutes of ordering. I don't know why anyone would go anywhere else.

The bread was too thing and floppy, the edges too thick, so when you try to eat it, it all falls apart. Tastes absolutely great though once you get it in your mouth. Also just the right portion of topping.

Lovely pizza. Soft crust and well prepped. Also loved the cheesy garlic bread. My only request is that more Calzones could be offered as they are delicious but would be nice to turn some of the other pizza options into a Calzone type. 🤤

This is an excellnt restaurant that probably does not attract many diners because of it's dark exterior and the emphasis is construed as a delivery / take-away. As an Introvert, that suits me tickkety-boo. The mixed olives as a starter were very plentiful, the very spicy "Vesuvius" pizza was a delight to my palate. The Montepulcianno wine was fabulous and served at perfect ambient temperature. Staff are fabulous, it is always uplifting to get service with a "nod and a wink"!

Maybe the closest Italian piazza I have ever tried in the UK 🥰🥰

1) Food Quality (4/5) - The pizzas are very tasty, using excellent ingredients and a lovely tomato sauce. I have to rate 4/5 only because the pizzas always seem wet/sloppy in the middle. If the bread was crispy all the way across it would be 5/5. That said, I can live with it because the overall taste/experience is a delight 2) Food Range (4/5) - A slightly more interesting and eclectic range than the usual pizza restaurant offerings. However, I would like to see some more meaty pizza options. Although I do appreciate this is a pizzeria, I would also welcome some high protein sides (for example, chicken goujons or meatballs) and kiddy friendly crudités for a more balanced meal, especially for family outings 3) Service (4/5) - Service generally pretty good. Service can be a bit slow when dining in, and deliveries sometimes late 4) Atmosphere (4/5) - A pleasant enough venue, with lovely ambience from the wood-fired oven. Tables a bit narrow and chairs a little uncomfortable. Door is opened quite often (for deliveries/collections) meaning cold air blows in quite a lot 5) Value (5/5) - Food is reasonably priced, especially given the high quality ingredients (way better than the big chains) 6) Overall Verdict (5/5) - This little suburban restaurant is such a gem. It creates high quality pizzas with delicious, quality toppings. I like the fact that every pizza comes out a different, irregular shape, showing its rustic, hand-made heritage 7) Got to try... Osina - the greens, Friarielli, are unusual and give this pizza a wonderfully fresh, earthy edge. I hope this never comes off the menu

Hidden gem with tasty wood fired thin pizzas.

Came out with my husband and step sons for pizza, googled pizza in Harpenden to find an independent. Sat and watched the pizzas being made in the pizza oven from Naples. Pizzas were excellent and the service friendly 👏 👌

We had a delicious meal here at lunch time yesterday, the pizzas were delicious and tasted very fresh! And the service was quick- thank you Audrey and the rest of the team!

…and not disappointed. I ordered a delivery of side salad (crispy and fresh), a garlic bread w/cheese (yumch) and a Diavola (Pepperoni) which was delicious too. Ordered online direct not long after 6pm and it was delivered within 20 mins. And it was hot too (not the salad, that’d be weird) ...so no need to warm it up. I'd say these people know pizza! Great ingredients, well cooked and a hearty size. This was enough for two us! Better than any of the pizza chains around Harpenden and, tbh, yet to have any better pizza from anywhere hereabouts. And if you order on Tues or Wed, it’s 25% off. Excellent.

Loved the delicious pizzas handmade in the traditional Italian oven! Great flavours combined to take you to Italy in a bite ! Nice compact menu at a reasonable price too. Never noticed it on the high street as it’s tucked away but found it on Tripadvisor with great reviews already.

A small cosy restaurant which can be easily missed! Parking can be a bit of a challenge. Fairly basic surroundings in restaurant but the level of service and great care and friendly service makes it feel warmer in ambience. Starters of burrata and another dish of charcuterie were plentiful & fresh. Pizzas were super - great dough base which is just to my liking. Soft but thick enough. Freshly made & tasty with right amount of toppings. Wines are served by the glass but not shown on menu. Overall a good experience and would defo return. Thank you Yard team :)

We have been coming here for a while now and have always looked forward to the food, tonight they have let them selves down, staff had no idea on customer service,. No plates, had to ask 3 times , and then he grunts as he’s walking away. They need to train staff before asking them to represent a business.

Ordered pizzas online on New Years Day - got a confirmation and went to collect to find they were closed. Have chased and chased for a refund as money was deducted - get fobbed off by staff that I need to email in and no response to email. VERY POOR now onto Amex to get refunded

My pizza delivery was a change from my usual choice but nonetheless it was made to the usual high standard of the Yard. It was the first time I had ordered through Just Eat and the delivery service ensured that my meal was delivered hot instead of potentially luke warm, The pizza was thoroughly delicious the beer choice a perfect compliment to pepperoni!

And, in general, every time I see a pizzeria with astronomical rates, I tend to shiver… However, this wasn’t the case with the Yard pizzeria as I left the place quite satisfied. The pizza crust was tasty and not too soft / not too crunchy. The quality of the ingredients was simply outstanding, from starters to the pizza, I really enjoyed every little piece of what I ate. This makes a big difference. The staff was also really nice, I also liked the music they put on. V reasonable prices. I will come back again, for sure.

The Yard seemed happy to pass this burnt pizza to a customer as acceptable quality. Customer Service is non-existent. No reply to emails or messages. I would avoid this place.

Despite late arrival the pizzas were excellent.
