Lloyds Bar Great Western in Cardiff

Visiting Cardiff with my family and friends and called in for a drink after getting off the train. I was in the middle of being served when the bar person (Rhiannon I believe) asked me to move to the side to allow a customer who was pretty much at the bar where there was no space for me to move. She was very rude to me and I told her so and took no notice of her thereafter. Then when i turned back towards the bar she said “I don’t like what you’re saying about me, I’m kicking you out and refunding your drinks”. I want even talking about her 🤷🏼 shocking attitude from her. I then asked to speak to the manager who said that he’s got to side with his staff even though I had a witness…

I expected more, the food and price was ok. But the place felt dirty. There was flies constantly around the tables, I wouldn’t return

Went in for a pint while waiting for a bus as I have done on many occasions. Headed straight for the loo as I needed to go and being alone didn't want to leave drink on table or take to loo. Was approached by rude doorman in a rude way. Tho I would have had a drink, I told him that I think that it would be public spirited to let people use the facilities even if they don't want a drink. He told me in that case I should leave. Disgusting attitude, won't ever spend a penny there again (excuse the pun)!

This is probably one of the better Wetherspoons in Cardiff. Clean tables and friendly staff what more can you want. Good Visit.

This was out first time at this Whetherspoons and we were very pleased with our meal. The fish and chips was great with lovely crisp batter and white fish and is consistent at all Wetherspoons. The restaurant was spotlessly clean with a good atmosphere and the staff were friendly. We will return!

This is a pub over two floors. It was very crowded being a bank holiday weekend but still found a food corner place to sit. Ordering was easy and the food arrived faulty quickly. I chose the Mangalorean Curry and chicken wings. The curry was okay but really enjoyed the wings. I wish though that there was an option to substitute the naan (accompanying the curry dish with rice) with either more rice or chips as a half and half. Overall though it was a good meal and I'd visit again.

This is a very large and very popular pub. Friday at lunch it was packed. The alcohol and food prices are very reasonable. After eating here, it definitely appears the food is secondary to alcohol consumption. In other words, it is a pub with food, not a restaurant. If you are looking for a very large and vibrant pub with so, so food this will serve well.

Excellent food, piping hot, best Wetherspoons food I’ve ever had! Excellent service, drinks and food arrived really quickly from our app orders. Well done and thank you. Our visit was during the evening on Saturday 20th January.

Got here for breakfast as we had to leave hotel at 11am. Ordered. Luckily found a seat as very busy pub. Ordered on app. Over Half hr later went to ask where it was. It arrived. And can honestly say it's the worst one I've had. Dry stale brittle toast. Rank congealed beans. Sausage n bacon 1 each small and bearable and a hash brown I wouldn't normally eat but needed food badly so did. Vile. Not worth the wait.

I came here sometime before the summer, Sorry that i forgot when, We ordered our food, it came out shortly and it wasn't very nice, my chicken burger repeated on me and made me feel sick, the chips were nice though, can't fault them, sorry about the late review, personally wouldn't recommend, 3/10 experience

This review will probably make no difference as it’s full day in day out what I say won’t make one iota of difference ! But here we go ! 1. Packed tables full of dirty plates glasses no one clearing had to clear ourselves manic no staff ! 2.food took forever and was dire !!! At best ! I ordered the most expensive burger on menu sound amazing the double Angus all singing dancing burger ! What arrived was a squished burger with 2 small overcooked old looking burgers in a small bun and chips no garnish looked disgusting ! My wife ordered the fish and chips Everyone around us were laughing it’s all you could do ! It was so cremated it was dark brown fish curled up to it’s last legs ! Even the waitress said she wouldn’t eat it ! Someone came over from another table to take a picture of it !!!!!! After complaining the waitress brought another piece on its own equally overcooked maybe slightly less ! But by this time we’d all finished our food and we’re just waiting to go ! In the past I’ve always enjoyed Wetherspoons at other outlets and is great value for money ! But this was no value awful and will never return . My advice is if you do go there look around first at other peoples meals before ordering ! The fish was that tough it was like a brick ! Staff no apologies no money off the bill nothing ! Just replaced a piece of fish with the same ! Stay away in my opinion ! It was so chaotic with tables empty full of dirty dishes no where to sit unless you clean yourself ! Rubbish !

Wasn’t allowed in even though it was 6pm. I’m 21 and my sister is 17 we were coming for food not drinks, told by bouncers that they wouldn’t be able to keep an eye on her even though the law is no under 18’s after 9pm. Told as I wasn’t an adult she wasn’t allowed in with me even thought I’m over 18. Absolute joke of a place!!

Great size, nice drinks and food was decent for a bar. All round positive existence and a go to when in Cardiff with friends whether it’s a night-out or just a day-out

7 of us down for the weekend from Edinburgh. Could have spent a few hours but had to leave as they wouldn't accept Scottish notes. Never had this problem in other pubs on our previous visits to Cardiff. This is a warning for any other Scots heading here for the speedway grand prix on Saturday.

This pub has really gone downhill. Toilets and bar are absolutely filthy and the breakfast may possibly be the worst I’ve ever had. Walk further up the street and go somewhere else - I 100% don’t recommend this place.

Average pub with perfect location. Very busy, quite untidy, but cheap prices. Went there only for beer so no idea about the food.

This place is in a really good location, right by the train station, so a good place to go if your train arrives and you’re too early to check in at your hotel or you have some time to kill before catching your train. It was right next door to my hotel, the Travelodge, which didn’t have restaurant facilities so I could only get a paltry breakfast bag there rather than a hot breakfast. I therefore came here for breakfast instead. I arrived a few minutes after it opened. I ordered eggs Benedict with a hot chocolate. I noticed that the price had increased and no longer included a free drink, so I had to pay separately for my mocha, however, free refills were available. You have to get your own hot drinks though, from a machine. There were two machines. One wasn’t working (it hadn’t been filled) when I arrived, and it took me two drinks to realise that the second machine hadn’t been properly filled either. My first drink was a mocha. I noticed that it wasn’t filled right to the top - only about half way. It also didn’t taste that good. So my next drink was a hot chocolate. Again, it wasn’t filled right to the top. I started drinking it, and that’s when I noticed it was white - I had milk, not a hot chocolate! They obviously hadn’t filled the chocolate in the machine, so my mocha that tasted funny tasted that way as there wasn’t any chocolate in it. By then, the staff had sorted out the other machine, so I tried again. Third time lucky. I had a hot chocolate, and this time it actually was a hot chocolate - filled to the top, and containing chocolate! The staff really should have everything ready before opening though. This really wasn’t good enough. I had better luck with the food. The eggs Benedict were really nice. I would come back here again as it’s in a convenient location, it’s easy to order, and the breakfast is nice. I’ll know next time what to look out for when it comes to drinks too, and will say something if something’s not right.

A great location less than a minute walk from the railway station. Stunning historical building akin to many other Wetherspoon's. I ordered scrambled eggs on brown toast with orange juice for £3.25. The scrambled eggs were slightly overcooked, but everything else about the experience was fine

Me and my family decided to stop here to get a breakfast when leaving Cardiff when waiting for our train. When our breakfast arrived the beans were cold, everything else seem to be warm. We could have ask to take it back, but we were catching a train and didn't want to be waiting around. The table next to us couldn't make out what the table number was, so when there breakfast come out they decide to put there breakfast on the table I was sitting at. I try to get the man attention to us him that we didn't order anything, he didn't make no contact he just walk off. The breakfast should have been for the table next to us they were quitting for there breakfast. The hot dinks machine was playing up when getting a refill. Toilets are down stairs in the basement, it is quite a walk down. There is another Wetherspoons down the road.

I have only given a one star because i could not give a 0. Visited this Wetherspoons a couple of weeks ago, very busy but I did not realise there was a concert going on in Cardiff. Me and my mum stood in a queue outside, it was midday to be searched by a bouncer, I did not mind that but what i did mind was when i opened my bag ready to be searched he just put his hands straight into my bag and started to take my items out. this is illegal. A bouncer is not supposed to put their hands inside your bag because they can plant something in it. I know, because i undertake bag searches myself and not a great amount of the public do not realise this. I told him this and just just muttered something and swore at me. Not only that but i had my 82 year old mother with me. Anyway, it was pretty crowded, we had 2 drinks and a meal which was cold. I know i should have sent it back, but, I do not think the staff cared at all. It was busy and they were taking the money. Which is a shame because we go there every week, used to. Times have changed and i will be taking my custom elsewhere. I work front of house myself, times have changed, i will be taking my mum out somewhere else.

This place has gone incredibly downhill. The food is poor, the tables, chairs, cutlery & toilets are dirty. The attitude of the staff is shocking from the barstaff to the management to the power craving doorstaff. They are all in need of some people skills training and some lessons on Customer service and discrimination. Plenty of other bars in the vicinity for a much more pleasant experience.

This is a bustling pub run by Wetherspoon. It wasn't as good as some I've been in, including the the same City. Very noisy place due to the fact it is basically a lot of little spaces / rooms, sound carries then meets and is bounced back. Typical Wetherspoon fair up for offer. Only stopped for a drink, good job the App works as the queues were large. I always use the App now in their pubs, saves a lot of time plus you get served fairly sharpish.

Came in here on a visit to Cardiff. I love that it is the first thing right next to the train station and wonder how many weary travellers have stumbled in previously. The pub is huge and there is a small spiral staircase to get upstairs. It’s pretty clean (as pubs go) and spacious. I ordered food and a drink at lunchtime during the week on the app. The drink arrived first as you might expect and the food arrived shortly after. The chap who brought the food was really cheerful and friendly and the food was just as you might expect. I would certainly visit again.

You could not even write our experience honestly.. we went here for a few drinks and some food before starting a day of birthday celebrations for friends, we ordered 4 pizza’s, all with drinks, when they arrived the waitress also bought a portion of chicken...

Only reviewing the breakfast. We were staying ot the Travelodge next door so this was convenient. Staff were friendly and helpful. The place didn't feel very clean though, the floor was sticky for example. The breakfast offered was basic fare, nothing very exciting. Slightly strange...

This pub is right next to the train station couldn’t get any closer ! Quick afternoon pint for two , prompt service and plenty of seating. Overall pleasant visit and couldn’t fault this establishment.

Large pub but it seems to have a strange layout...food was ok and very reasonably priced. Would think of it more as a place to pop in for a quick bite and then out again. Not a place to spend time on a second drink....just didn’t suit us, but I can see that it would be busy.

Ideal place to call to chill and re-charge your batteries. Free WiFi with plenty of seating. Good choice of food and drink at reasonable prices. Don’t even have to leave your table - order via app. Staff are friendly. Only fault would be the place could be cleaner with more pride taken in wiping down tables etc. Other than that I will return

On a day trip to Cardiff, early hours this is perfect place to have a nice English breakfast with option for vegetarian breakfast too. Good quality food and ambience is decent.. Service can surely be much better.. Perfect place to start your day at Cardiff and very accessible

What a nice friendly place to visit such a nice warm welcome from the staff a goo place to go for a drink or to eat, and it s a hotel as well not stay here yet but will do one day .

I have to follow a diet which is both gluten free and vegetarian and I used to like eating here as the menu clearly stated which dishes were gluten free. But, the menu no longer states this and instead I was directed to what I can only describe as a computerised system, on the wall, to check the ingredients in every dish to ascertain what is gluten free. This was not easy as it wasn't clear whether the side items, which came with the meal, were also gluten free and I had to call a member of staff for help who also struggled to ascertain exactly what was suitable. The system also didn't let me navigate around easily and I struggled just to check which jacket potato toppings were suitable as I couldn't get from one part of the system to another. The staff member also struggled so took out a paper folder and we spent some time checking the ingredients manually. When I eventually managed to order something, the portion was absolutely tiny - I can only describe it as a 'child's portion' so I queried this with a member of staff who said that it was a standard portion so I couldn't have any more rice or corn chips as I had requested. I complained and had to wait for a manager to come over, which took some time as it was busy. By this time, my meal was cold and my husband had finished his. PLEASE JUST GO BACK TO IDENTIFYING THE GLUTEN FREE MEALS ON THE MENU. AND, PLEASE GIVE DECENT PORTIONS!!

A great location for a drink or two. Plenty of decent seating. Cheapest drinks in town for good quality product. The app is amazing for drinks and delivered in less than 3 minutes. Would recommend.

Popped in here on our way to meal in Mill Lane! Very cheap gins and excellent selection to choose from. Toilets long way down 2 flights of stairs :(

No fan of Brexit, BUT a bottle of Rose Denbies for a a penny short of a tenner & two EXCELLENT cottage pies made with stunning traceable beef from Castell Howell, is the best £20 you can possibly spend try it ! It English wine & welsh beef is the Brexit future roll on . My friends who deliver meat to Castell Howell say the whole place is immaculate & you can eat off the floor there ! Please Wetherspoons stock there steaks !

Great location just off the approach to Cardiff Central train station. Gets very busy over the weekend and whenever the rugby is on. However it can be really quiet if you pick the right time and day. Huge building, upstairs has it's own bar and terrace. Usual standard Wetherspoons menu, good value food and you know what you're getting.

been here a number of times nice pub but very dissapointed on match day they put up the bar prices.its bad enough having to drink from plastic glasses,why do they need to rip off people.went to another spoons pub and the same thing.went back in on the following day and prices back to normal.

I love Wetherspoons Pub - they are what they are ..... I decided to try this one on Tuesday instead of my usual Gatekeeper. The place was nice enough and the staff very friendly but I ordered 2 big breakfasts ..... all went well except for the bacon ... it wasn't. It was cooked ham. Under no illusions was it bacon and looked like it had been cooked a while back also. The rest was lovely. The interior was nice although the bathroom smelt quite damp. Wouldn't put me off going again

Cardiff es ciertamente mimado por Wetherspoons. Probablemente fui a 6 diferentes y este todos los días de la semana para el desayuno, mi hotel está muy cerca. Desayuno idéntico a lo que obtendría en cualquiera de sus pubs y aún bastante delicioso.

Called in for pre rail journey for drinks with friends. Usual Wetherspoons, good service, food and drinks at sensible prices. Friendly and helpful staff. Gets very noisy.

My Hotel is located across the road (The Clayton) had to be helped to the pub cos am not good at crossing the road. I had Sausages in mash which was nice but was spoiled somewhat by being drowned in gravy, well done for stocking Heineken Zero, makes a change from Becks in a bottle and its only 275ml!!! Shame the table I was shown to was not clean before I arrived, Not Great, Wetherspoons

Buena cerveza artesanal (por supuesto), pero el Rogan Josh para menores de 5 años me sorprendió tanto por su valor como por su sabor. Una mesa más clara preguntó si estaba bien y cuando dije que era excelente y que solo un poco de chutney podía mejorarlo, se fue y regresó con una botella. Café sin fondo no está mal de la máquina de autoservicio.

Pop into for a meal after getting off the train.sat down lovely clean place inside.my wife ordered our food.didnt take long to come.my food looked like it had been left on the grill for a 10min.i had all day brunch. Hardly any chips on my plate.sausages was nice.beans looked like they been scraped up off the floor. What there was of them. The two eggs were shocking. If i owned that place the chef would have been sacked.how he was alowd to send them out is a joke.the people on the next table couldnt believe the state of them. Here is what they looked like.i sent them back and asked for two fresh eggs.which the waiter wasnt happy bout me making a complaint how bad they were.i said would u eat them.he just looked. And shook his head. My wifes meal was ok apart from the gravy that came with the pie .but she ate it.

Slow service, even had to clean my own table. Being busy is no excuse for poor cleanliness. When the tables were eventually cleared they still did not wipe the surface.

Big Wetherspoons pub adjacent to the station, typical Wetherspoons offering in terms of food and drinks, staff were friendly and service was ok

I have ate and drank in this place. It’s close to the train station. Food ain’t bad and they’ve a decent selection of drinks. Most of the staff are ok and I wouldn’t mind coming here again.

Ordered 4 pitchers in a single order, Mark had the patience of a saint and made every single one, cracked some jokes and made me feel really welcome! Ran top bar alone really well, everything was clean and I'm really happy with his level of service.

Very close to the railway station which is great for breakfast when arriving in Cardiff and for getting an evening meal before leaving. Good Pub grub food at bargain prices. Can get a little noisy at busy times. I'd recommend the Bacon Butty with a hot (re-fillable) drink, only £3.50 for breakfast and the Ultimate Burger for lunch/dinner.

Scoperto per caso, ci sono tornata quasi ogni giorno durante la mia permanenza a Cardiff. A parte il weekend del Pride, in cui c'era confusione praticamente ovunque, durante la settimana é un posto molto frequentato ma non caotico...e si trova sempre posto. Il servizio è veloce e il cibo buono! Si mangia bene e si spende poco! Io l'ho preferito ai soliti fast-food!

Really like the quieter upstairs with outside seating area here. Standard food , nice staff but the food is standard for a Wetherspoon - have had dirty cutlery and dirty glass and plates here however so tend to be a bit cautious . Good location however and although can be busy at times is always very reasonable . Average rating I give , but staff should take more care.

This is the nearest pub to the train station so it would be rude not to stop in for a drink on your way elsewhere. It’s always pretty busy and, as a ‘Spoons, it’s cheap too.

Train from Bristol. Cheap as chips....drinkies in an old church like building... toilets clean and airy. Up a spiral stair case..staff friendly and tables clean.

Six of us went there after cinema show for something to eat and drink, as this is a wetherspoon establishment we expected fast service at good prices and to be fair we wasnt disappointed. The bar staff were pleasant and very good service, we all enjoyed our meals which although basic was enjoyable. good value for money.

Came here the day after pink. Was busy! But staff cannot cope. I’ve currently been sat 1hr and 15 mins waiting for food. This is totally unacceptable. And the management should plan their schedules better to cope with peak shifts!

Went in to have a simple meal before catching train . One Tennessee burger and a chicken brie burger . Both arrived quickly less than 10 minutes , chips and onion rings barely warm . Chicken burger inedible , think it had been microwaved to death. Complained and a second. Attempt was made , this time chips lovely and hot , onion rings barely hot . As now late for our train gave us takeout box . So disappointed 2nd burger inedible like shoe leather , if this restaurant cannot produce edible simple food not worth a visit won’t be going to weather-spoons again .

Called in here Sunday morning just before going on the train I ordered a large breakfast don’t like eggs so replaced them for bacon after I asked the duty manager what could I have, which he then decided to roll his eyes at the girl behind the bar the answer was well whatever’s on the breakfast, if I had known I would have had a regular to much toast and hash browns not enough mushrooms in fact only one!!!.

Called in here on the Whitson Saturday afternoon after getting of the train . Place was nice and busy creating a friendly welcoming atmosphere . Good selection of beers, larger, real ales wines n spirts all at a good price we enjoyed.

Just ordered large veg breakfast and a gluten free breakfast, both came out luke warm , mushrooms not cooked , eggs snotty in the middle , hardly any beans (supposed to be large breakfasts), cold sausage . Coffee refill is good except that it's not that hot either. All in all wont be eating here again.

Cracking little pub pre concert. Wetherspoons drinks prices means why move before the concert exorcism if you get a table like we did. Cracking atmosphere and cheap as chips. Would recommend.

Called in here after visiting a restaurant across the road for drinks. Very busy for a late Tuesday afternoon but was served quickly. Limited gin selection compared to other Wetherspoons/Lloyd’s bars. Extensive pub that seemed to go on and on and we were lucky enough to find a table all be it wet, sticky and covered in plates and glasses.

Popped in for a quick breakfast, can’t complain about the food - sausage bap, can’t really go wrong. Service was fab, the gentleman serving us was friendly and cheerful. Hot chocolate was one of those chocolates on a spoon - which was great!

You can order food at the bar or on the app which we did. The drinks came first and then the food and it was delivered very quickly. You can have as many coffees as you want.

Ordered a cooked breakfast, was told that couldn't have my bacon really well done (actually thought he was joking, after all who doesn't get to order food how they like it). The bacon was disgusting, and the rind was still white and bacon still pink - wasnt going to risk eating it. Just goes to show they don't cook to order and that the customers preference for food here is irrelevant. I regularly go to the Aneurin Bevan in Whitchurch which cooks food to your liking and is always delicious so would recommend going there instead.

My friends and I stopped in for a late lunch and were starving. Food and drinks here are ordered using an app or directly at the bar. The three of us spent 30 minutes trying to download the app with no cell service or actual service from the staff. You basically figure it all out on your own. The food was fine (you can’t really mess up fried food) and the beer was cheap, but I would *never* eat here again. Also, the place was jam-packed, our table and menus were sticky, and the loo was nasty.

A short time before my train got chicken strips and Gunness for £8.20, a bargain. My. Thr crunch was great very happy will go again

Went to the Great Western pub yesterday afternoon with a group of family and friends. Had a few drinks, some food and a good time , staff were polite and seem to like a bit of humour. Lovely small pub to pop into for a few drinks and a quick bite to eat and is close to Cardiff Central station .

I have had breakfast here about 4 times now. On each occasion it was early morning Sunday or Monday and was very quiet. Each time my breakfast has arrive with precooked cold congealed eggs even though I always ask for soft runny eggs. I suspect that everything else on the plate was precooked and kept warm but not hot. This does not compare with breakfasts I have had in other Weatherspoon's. Very disappointing.

Tuvimos un par de visitas agradables al Great Western durante su estancia en la ciudad. Un antiguo gran hotel, hay muchas mesas y zonas de estar arriba y abajo. También hay una terraza exterior arriba. Desayunamos en la segunda visita, esto fue servido caliente y delicioso. El personal amable, buena relación calidad-precio, volverá.

Llegué para una comida a la hora del almuerzo con colegas que usan la aplicación para ordenar y como quería algo que no estaba en la aplicación fui al bar. Pedí una coca cola y pusieron tanto hielo que sobresalía de la parte superior del vaso. Pedí menos hielo y la camarera hizo un comentario grosero y comenzó a tirar el hielo del vaso al suelo. La comida, aunque llegó a tiempo, estaba seca y tenía un sabor horrible. Nunca volvería a comer allí y sugeriría que alguien fuera a otro lugar para un buen servicio.

Nos alojamos en el Travelodge de al lado que no ofrece desayuno, así que vinimos al Great Western para el desayuno.

Simplemente me senté aquí disfrutando de un buen café después de un delicioso desayuno. Una relación calidad-precio inmejorable en una excelente ubicación con un personal muy amable y servicial. Bien hecho Wetherspoons para mantener sus grandes estándares. Volveré la próxima vez que visite Cardiff y presumiré la multitud de personas que disfrutan del desayuno esta mañana.

It says what it is on the tin basically, not the first time I have been in the outlet and I am sure that it will not be the last either. Great location and friendly helpful staff to go with it too.

First time visit to a Wetherspoons for me and I was pleasantly surprised. Had an evening meal one day and breakfast the next.

I eat here a lot, because the drinks are cheap & wide range local beers & ciders. Nothing wrong with the cheerful staff BUT they have to change their meat supplier the steaks are like leather again .

Breakfast on a Wednesday - very quiet, served very quickly by friendly staff. Eggs Benedict was really nice. Can't fault it besides the fact that the building was so cold!

On the Saturday between Christmas and New Year a group of 11 of us had a good early evening meal. If was impossible to get a table downstairs as it was quite busy with sales shoppers and early evening revellers, but we managed to get a large table on the first floor. We arrived in small groups and I managed a drink downstairs first – note the bar upstairs does not have anywhere near the same range of hand-pulled ales! Food ordered and arrived within 15 minutes, one of the better food presentations I have had at a Spoons – plenty on the plate and quality of the ‘local’ Welsh pie good. We ordered off the main menu and noticed it was cheaper on the special menu with other local delights – did try the Brains (beer) and was not impressed. Good evening – not sure if there was a lift as the eldest member of the group (70+) flew down the spiral stairs uncontrolled! All good though. Very local to the railway station. PS. The bouncers handed sweets out on our departure..

We ate here for an afternoon meal and again in the morning for breakfast. Food is delivered quickly and is of reasonable quality, and good value for money.

Lovely staff and fabulous food which is great value. What’s not to love? Would recommend and visit again.

I popped into the great western while waiting for my connection train. Very ideal to keep warm and to have something to eat.

Not a bad pub, food was decent and cheap enough, however the seat I sat on was soaking wet, also a very cold pub in the winter time.

Didn't see this was a Wetherspoon's from the outside, and it certainly didn't feel like one inside. Large space, was very busy for a Tuesday before 5pm but food was served quickly and was what you'd expect from Wetherspoons.

Busy but best prices for drink here & good range of beers/lagers at a good price. £2.49p a pint best value in the city. Quick service too considering how busy it was. Not enough seating but unsurprising in run up to xmas. Have had food here previously too, was very good.

Standard weatherspoon pub which can occasionally attract a rougher crowd. That said the staff are nice and drinks and food wise is a weatherspoon standard
