The quick version:pros:- stunning place to visitcons- staff poorly trained and uninterested at best and rude at worst- afternoon tea is tasteless and disappointing- staff cannot be found when you need themThe full version:I visited Llangoed Hall today with my wife for a champagne afternoon tea - started well then promptly fell off a cliff. We arrived on a rainy afternoon and I can honestly say Llangoed Hall is simply stunning. As we parked up outside we were met by one of the staff proffering umbrellas, which I thought was a super touch. After explaining we were there for afternoon tea we were led to the lounge and seated. We were not asked our names, simply seated. After being seated for a few minutes a member of staff (presumably a manager) approached us asking our names. She then informed us our booking, which was made the day prior (Thursday), had been booked for Saturday instead of Friday, which was when we visited. Despite the fact this was the hotel's mistake her attitude implied that we had made the error. Further when we explained we had traveled a full hour to be there her demeanor suggested we were in some way putting her out. At no point did she actually apologise for the confusion. She left us whilst she checked with the chef as to whether we could be accommodated and eventually returned with an affirmative. We were swiftly brought our champagne and shortly after our cakes, sandwiches and pastries arrived. All presented well. I asked if I could order my tea but the waiter informed me someone would be along to take our order. They did not come, instead after eating half our sandwiches I flagged down a member of staff to ask whether it might be possible to have TEA with my afternoon tea. He asked me which tea I would like, which prompted me to have to ask for a tea menu (pretty basic requisite).Tea eventually came and was poured by the waiter. However, he neglected to use a tea strainer and poured tea (leafs and all) into my cup. I asked whether a tea strainer might be possible, which he admitted he forgot and brought one promptly. I've had lots of afternoon teas and I can honestly say though this was presented well it was largely tasteless. There was a poor balance of savoury to sweet selection, which left you cloyed. It was very disappointing and not up to the standard of other competitors like the Angel Hotel in Abergavenny, which by comparison is a world apart. As we finished our tea and food we were looking around for a waiter to get the bill. This was where things became slightly farcical as something, perhaps a secret signal, had sent the staff to ground. They could not be found anywhere. We waited a full five minutes in the hall before one appeared where were told to visit reception. There is no sign for reception so you'll have to find it yourself down a hallway. I then waited a further 5-10 minutes at reception before anyone appeared. No one at reception asked how our experience was, which was unfortunate because it was extremely disappointing. I paid and we left quite certain that we would not return. The hotel clearly aspires to high standards but those standards are simply veneer. The staff are ill informed and poorly trained and I could not recommend this afternoon tea to anyone. Whether or not the hotel's other offerings are better executed is something I will now probably never discover. In short - visit the Angel Hotel if you want afternoon tea.Incidentally we also had to phone four times in order to book the ill fated afternoon tea - so clearly the issue of elusive staff is quite endemic. Perhaps instead of offering umbrellas at the entrance a flare gun would be of more use - might help to get someone's attention.

Before I say anything else our dinner we ate here this week was supberb, I'd say michelin star here you come !When I booked to stay here , I was emailed the A la carte menu , which we had glanced at . So , when we were presented menus which only included a selection of tasting menus we were confused and thought we were missing something .Well we weren't , it is now the tasting menus or (to be fair to Llangoed) they would cook anything from the lounge menu and chef also offered to those guests who did not want a tasting menu rack of lamb We had a delicious selection of amuse bouche with our drinks and we opted for a tasting menu which chef happily tweaked for me as I am allergic to shellfish and I have to say the replacement risotto was supberb .As were all the courses we had , all beautifully presented and ample portions , we have good appetites and were left quite satified.I would highly recommend staying and eating here.

Our son and his girlfriend kindly treated us to a voucher last Christmas for afternoon tea at Llangoed Hall. It had taken us 9 months to get around to booking our treat but it was well worth the wait. We chose a glorious Sunday afternoon for our visit and were greeted by a pleasant young lady who led us to our cosy window seats where we had a lovely view of the magnificent Wye Valley. It was very quiet but nonetheless peaceful and relaxing. Tea was served first and it was pleasing that the teapot was both large and complemented with another pot of hot water which was useful to wash down the large array of delicious cakes before us. Personally I would have preferred a few less cakes and more of the super sandwiches but you couldn't fault any of the food on offer. The young man who saw to our needs was also excellent and lingered for the right amount of time. After tea we took a gentle stroll around the gardens and also along the banks of the river Wye to try and walk off our calorie rich tea. All in all an excellent way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Should any other members oft our family be reading this ............an evening meal voucher would be nice and by the way the sumptuous rooms look very nice too!

The SO and I had enjoyed a trip around Wonder Wool at Builth and decided to call in to the Hall for a warm up and a bite to eat. We have been a number of times before and this was to be our first trip since the place changed owners. We arrived in the middle of a wedding fair and having nimbly avoided being dragged into something permanent we tottered into the dining room for luncheon. The SO only wanted a sarnie which was just as well as that's all that was on offer, however the dining room is lovely and restful especially after the hurly burly of a knitting show. Could we have chips? Not on the menu but our very friendly and helpful waitron whizzed off to the kitchen and was back with a jolly thumbs up in no time. A pot of delicious tea (real leaf and a gilt strainer), delicious crispy chips which had the texture of good chip shop batter and our sandwiches which arrived with a granish of the hall's home-cooked veg chips. Their bread is home made and I would like to think in their own kitchen. Very nice, lovely service from charming and attentive waiting staff with white gloves no less but sadly a tad expensive as they over charged us by nearly £10 which we didn't realise until we'd got home.

The visit to Llangoed was faultless. The tasting menu was absolutely delicious, with a huge variety of courses . Each plate was exquisitely presented, and the flavour and taste combinations were wonderful. Particularly impressive was the fact that 65% of the ingredients are sourced within 7 miles of the hotel, and in the summer this rises to 85%. The quality of the food really was outstanding, as was the variety encompassed in the tasting menu. The service was immaculate and friendly.I shall definitely be returning.

The ambience does not disappoint it is warm and welcoming. However there is a price to pay for this. Only one elderly couple were eating in the dining room when we sat down for lunch and only one more couple came after we left. The set menu was no longer available and so a la carte was the only choice. Main courses were £30+ deserts £16+. Bread freshly baked included. The portions were very pretty but the size of a starter. Not filling, the duck breast only a few strips, hardly a breast between three of us. They are aiming for a Michelin Star we were told. We went away disappointed. It was so empty and cannot sustain charging those prices with so few takers. This was a Friday lunch time in November when the colours of Autumn were fabulous. Pity. This was our third visit and probably our last.

We were fortunate to be invited to join family members, who had spent the morning planning wedding arrangements, for Sunday lunch. We were welcomed by name on arrival and immediately we felt valued guests. The fairly recent changes in management have clearly worked very well. Disregard the old advisor comments that do not represent the situation that now exists. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble - though perhaps being part of the wedding arrangement party helped. Staff are clearly proud of what has been achieved. We were lucky enough to have a guided tour of the bedrooms that will accommodate wedding guests for the big day next year - something we now very much look forward to. For a fairly standard Sunday lunch some might think the price a little expensive but it is good value with service that is attentive throughout the meal without being too intrusive. The food was of good standard with some nice touches. If we lived closer than the 100 miles that is the case we would no doubt find ourselves eating at Llangoed Hall quite frequently.

One of our Friday lunches took us to this utterly exquisitely set 17th century hotel in the Wye Valley above Glasbury. Sitting around in the fine lounge sipping sherry and nibbling good but not outstandingly inspired amuse bouche didn't really prepare us for how good the lunch was going to be. Attended to some really first class waitresses we went into the dining room where our window table had a view over the lawns down to the Wye. Richard's mackerel came with some chopped beetroot - such a good combination. My wild mushroom risotto with summer truffles was just so very good, with a drizzle of truffle oil. The others had beef tartare with beef marrow. Already more than happy, two of us had the duck - I'm usually wary of duck in restaurants - so easily wrecked - slightly over or under cooked, but Barry and Richard's cut like butter beneath the crispy skin. Terry and I had excellent rare lamb with wax beans and pearl couscous. Although I was tempted by the cheeseboard which had four or five local cheeses - hard and soft, and with which two of the party were more than content I opted to finish with a chocolate pudding with fruits which was utterly yummy. This is proper full-on modern European cuisine of a very high standard. And all for and wonderfully modest £25 a head. We were not wildly venturesome with the wine, but a bottle of Tanners Douro complemented the meal more than adequately and was only £25 too. Oh, OK then, yes we did have a second bottle but only, you understand, to prolong this so meal. Well we did finish by four. And than had a little stroll along the banks of the river - a bit magical really.

Went into this restaurant expecting good food, but what we got was superb food, certainly in my opinion worth a Michelin *. It was a set 3 course lunch with about 4 choices on each course. The presentation was excellent, and what I particularly liked the portions where good, so often in good restaurants you get wonderful presentation but little food. The desserts where amazing. We only intended to eat there once but went back a second time, the lunch is £25 a head but if you happen to have a Tastecard which we do, you get 2 meals for the price of one, which for the quality of food is a giveaway. Excellent menu of locally source food, beautifully presented, while being not too much of a mature pallette to put off my fussy daughter.

What I personally liked about the food was that it wasn't messed about, so many chefs nowadays come up with some horrible concoctions that are just not nice. This was quality food and you could taste it rather than having it over layed with other flavours which didn't compliment the basic ingredients.

I enjoyed the food, it was spectacular, beautiful building, grounds and estate. Drinks were overpriced!

We stayed here with our two dogs for one night prior to attending the Welsh Kennel Club Champ Show. Our room was really well equipped and very nicely laid out, and very clean. We were made to feel very welcome by all the staff. The full english breakfast was spot on, and they went out of their way to ensure it was ready for us promptly as we had to head off to the show. We will definitely stay here again.

A pleasant meal with excellent service but very quiet, i suppose thats usually to be expected in January. Probably the nicest salmon we've had with a scrumptious cheese cake to follow and lovely white wine too. Waiter had a good sense of humour and kept us entertained on a quiet night and said "don't forget us on Tripadvisor" so here it is! Quickly cooked and delivered to our table with genuine warmth and a smile. Better than our first visit last summer but we don't like to make a fuss as it seemed full of holiday makers and a little short on waiting staff we hope you enjoyed your after work pint Johnny, Dean and Jenny x

Delicious. I had the mild prawn Ghurka curry and she had another mild Ghurka dish with Ghurka rice and bread. Absolute delight all the way! Great service.

Went to find this pub for Sunday lunch, Aug 2021 The pub is no longer operating. Also tried The Dragon in Montgomery which was only serving food to residents at present.
