The hotel has great character (which means also small rooms difficult to find!) and the hard working young people who run it are delightful eg the ebullient Holly on reception is one who lights up even a day made tedious by long journey. Our dinner was first cl;ass and so b beautifully presented; clearly there is an artiste in the kitchen. Ample NCP parking over the road if the hotel park, is full or your nerve cannot match the tight challenge therein

Location: 60/100 Shrewsbury is a beautiful city full of ups and downs with a river that runs around it, lovely medieval houses and numerous monuments. The hotel is positioned at the down edge of the centre, along a quite trafficated road and neither good nor bad view. The the car park has rather complicated access, a large car probably cannot enter. Service: 40/100. I wrote an email to the hotel reception, asking if they could give me a reduced price if I stayed for many nights. They offered me the standard price (they would have made a better impression by admitting it right away). I still reserved a room and they gave me the worst one (at least I hope it was the worst!). Perhaps, for a customer who offered to stay for several nights a month for several months, it would have been a better idea to reserve a more decent room for him. Room: 5/100. A room for kids. The twin room in which I slept with my doughter, was furnished with short beds, so short that they do not accommodate a person in its entire length (yet I am not a Watusi, and neither is my daughter). The distance of the beds from the walls did not exceed half a meter. The view right on the main road allowed us to be woken up pleasantly at six in the morning by a nice truck (perhaps a garbage truck, given that it stopped with its engines running for a good 6-7 minutes). There were no shaver sockets in the bathroom or a fridge in the room (yet the hotel advertises itself as four star!). The television was smaller than my home computer. Maybe they lowered my age by mistake and thought we were two children, giving me a room suitable for this age. There is no lift (present in much older and more fascinating hotels) Breakfast: 25/100. Served in an uncomfortable passage room (which hotel guests pass through with their luggage to access or exit the rooms since there is no lift). Standard food, of mediocre quality and mostly pre-packaged (fake fruit juices, usual trivial fruit arranged to fill the tables and make them look more attractive), little choice. Price: £160 for two people. This is the main problem. I spent much less (£110) in two alternative hotels where I received much more comfort, better quality of the rooms and better location, not to mention the breakfast. If they had charged me £80, it would have been an acceptable three stars hotel.

Greeted by Receptionist Holly who was very pleasant and helpful. A credit to you. Room 10 with 4 poster. Great attention to detail and everything was immaculate. Array of tea and coffee sachets in the room with plenty of milk. The breakfast was delicious and even had vegetarian option. Orange juice and coffee lovely. Lovely efficient and attentive staff. Fast service. The hotel is very cosy in every area and a bit different from the norm. We didn’t stay for lunch etc but the menu looked great. If the bedroom area had been a bit bigger I’d have given 10/10 but will say 9.5🤣. There were even ear plugs on the drawers. Oh and delicious butter shortbread biscuits. Lovely fresh decor, so pleasant to wake up to. The guy on night duty on reception was lovely too!

This is actually a review for the wine bar adjacent to the main hotel which isn't available to review on TripAdvisor (something I find a bit concerning) Anyway, my partner and I really enjoyed coming to Ernest and Co back when the two young lads were working there but the last few times we've come by the two members of staff we were so impressed with weren't there! We found the atmosphere really bland for want of a better word, too bright, lacklustre service and really poor product knowledge from the new manager! Don't think we'll be returning

After seeing some exceptional plates of food on their socials we couldn’t wait to re-visit the independently owned @lionandpheasant perfectly positioned at the bottom of Wyle cop, one of Shrewsburys most iconic streets. ⭐️4/5 Recommend👍🏻 Price 💸💸💸 We were greeted at reception and led through the bar to a cosy table next to a roaring log fire. Kicking off proceedings with a well crafted cocktail and home baked bread with whipped wild garlic butter. Unusually for us we opted for the same starter. Brined and blow torched scallops, green onion emulsion. We were a little confused with the plating and balance of ingredients. The squid ink cracker lay over the bowl hiding a soup like, rich oily emulsion. Having to hunt for the scallop, which should be the main attraction, but sadly appeared to be one scallop sectioned into three small pieces in a sea of emulsion was disappointing. The stale cracker brought nothing to the dish and was pretty inedible. The scallop itself melted in your mouth and the crispy tempura mussels brought a great pop of texture. Skilled fish cookery but worlds apart from the plating we were expecting after seeing such a beautiful representation on instagram. Sous vide chicken was succulent, whilst the dauphinoise could have done with some colour and crispness to the top layer. Due to the plating again lacking finesse it was hard to identify the Jerusalem artichoke or the spinach purée, these flavours were lost under the bold jus gras. A mighty piece of pan fried cod with crispy skin, salt and vinegar potatoes, samphire and pea tartare. This was everything you would hope for in an elevation of a Friday night chippy tea complete with fiery curry sauce. While we may have set our expectations a little high we enjoyed a good standard of food during our visit to the Lion and Pheasant. Execution of some dishes left room for improvement however the front of house manager took our feedback graciously and removed the starters from the bill. Overall an enjoyable evening with a relaxed vibe and the option of post dinner drinks next door at the fabulous @ernest_co #theshropshirefoodies #shrewsbury

My friend rang the Lion & Pheasant a few days ago & booked a Xmas lunch for us both as we had seen the fixed price Xmas lunch 2 & 3 course menu options on their website. When we arrived today, we were offered a completely different & a lot more expensive A la Carte menu! When we queried this we were told the menu had changed today! We were actually asked did we have a copy of the menu we had seen, surely if they only changed the menu today, they would have had the previous menu!! When we challenged them about the the fact that we booked the table on the understanding that we would get the same menu as seen at the time, there was no response to that & the server then went away, a short discussion was overheard with a staff member & a second Xmas menu was found & put in front of us. This menu was a set price, but was £20 more expensive than the one we had seen on their website & had indeed chosen. Naturally we rejected this too! There was no offer of an apology, or explanation he just walked away, so naturally we were not prepared to stay, it was a complete shambles, and we were not going to choose their highly inflated priced menu because we were already seated at the table. I will never frequent that place again, they have lost my business, shocking customer service, it was not surprising that there were no other diners to be seen at lunchtime. Luckily, we went & had a lovely Xmas lunch in the town, in a very prestigious & popular restaurant, where although busy & we hadn't booked, they found a lovely table for us & we had a great time, what a difference in staff attitude! I will be sending them a brilliant review as they saved the day.

Booked the Lion and Pheasant based on its good reviews and we weren't disappointed. They offered us their Sunday night deal of dinner, bed and breakfast for £119. We had an upgraded room with superb facilities, clean and fresh with a very comfortable bed. We enjoyed tea and a mince pie on arrival in the bar and later enjoyed quite the most delicious dinner we have had in ages. All the ingredients cooked to perfection with their own flavours which when combined danced on the palate. Despite being full we were both tempted by the dessert menu and succumbed to exquisite dishes, made to perfection. Breakfast was no less of a culinary masterpiece 👌 😋 That set us up for a lovely day sightseeing the area. We will definitely return.

Room not the same as booked and had paid more than on their own website by £20/night and they wanted to pay £15pp for breakfast on top of that making it seriously expensive (£180 per night = more than a 4* hotel in London). I think we had the trainee chef tonight….celeriac soup was lovely consistency but lacked seasoning and the toasted pine nuts had passed from buttery to burnt. Chicken liver parfait was the best dish of the evening, was smooth and had a pleasant chutney with it. Chips were flabby and served with school ketchup and mayonnaise which tasted cheap and vinegary. Truly appalling tartes fines aux pommes was anaemic with almost raw pastry. All in all very amateurish.

Not good enough for the price. We went to the restaurant and a couple of the main courses weren't good enough for the money (and service charge) they ask for. The chicken dish was dry and mean in terms of potion, I had to ask for extra gravy because it was so dry which was a shame because the gravy wasn't an improvement from Bisto gravy. Someone else ordered the sea bass which was clearly overcooked. We were also placed next to a table which was designed for watching sports (I don't understand why you would do this in a relatively expensive restaurant?) for which we were regularly interrupted by people shouting at the Rugby. After a while they did tell them to quiet down but it's a bit silly that this was an issue in the first place. On top of this, we had to wait too long for the food; around 45 minute wait for both the main meals and the puddings. We raised out complaints at the time, but no one came to speak to us about our concerns and when we got the bill it was like nothing had happened. It was only after we spoke to the manager that they reluctantly gave us a meager discount. I would have given 1 star, if it weren't for the fact our waiter was excellent.

Had a gorgeous Sunday lunch at the Lion + Pheasant recently with a friend. We wanted to eat around 5pm, but the kitchen closes between 4pm-6pm, so we popped somewhere else for a drink and headed back at 6pm. We assumed this would mean the Sunday lunch would be over…but we were happily wrong!! Food was so good, service was excellent and the atmosphere was relaxed and cosy. We opted for a starter and main course, everything was priced individually and a bottle of red wine to share. For starter we both had pork belly @ £9 - sorry, no photo as I forgot. I had beef, I was asked if I wanted it rare or well done, which was £22 and my friend had the Lamb, £23. We added an extra side of cauliflower cheese, £3.50. Everything else you can see came with the main courses which included some kind of delicious horseradish mash - yum. A bottle of Rioja, £36. Total + added 10% service charge = £112.75. We shall definitely be back! Thanks for a wonderful evening.

Modern and stylish renovation very tastefully done. Compact but interesting lunchtime menu with a contemporary fine-dining feel. However for the price, a little too hit and miss. Home made bread and herb butter is exceptional.- light and cloud like. Torched mackerel starter with rhubarb looked smart, but mackerel was a little fishy and rhubarb was hard and under poached and inedible A large bowl of mushroom veloute had a bitter after taste and not as fine or velvety as other veloutes we’ve had. Husband had main course lamb dish- sauce exceptional, lamb tender but tiny portions for the price and chips (also delicious) were extra. Don’t mind paying over the odds for exceptional food but needs to be top notch and this sadly fell short.

Beautifull hotel, I guess one can call it "trendy", but I just don't understand how they can justify the price £130/night and that most of the time will go to £160 as they run out of entry-level ones. So I guess the answer is there - because people pay for it! But let's just make some relevant comparisons - Birmingham Grand literally in the heart of the city, brand new, 5* hotel, with all recently decorated rooms to the highest standard is £135 + 15 for breakfast. Needless to say rooms are air conditioned, fully equipped and genuinelly very posh. Hotel has lifts, has porters and the service is top notch. The Lion+ is barelly 4* just for trendiness alone, but the actual quality of furnishing is closer to 3*, has no lift and you will be lugging your bags up and down mutiple flights of stairs (and I mean multiple - like 8 going up and down) trought narrow corridors to mediocre room (nothing wrong with it just mediocre) which isn't even air conditioned. Sorry, I just don't get it. That said restaurant is good - fully fine dining if you are into it. Althought in my oppinion it doesn't fit into the rest of the hotel. So it is ~3.5* hotel which is very youghtfull and trendy and then you get 5*+ fine dining with very tiny portions for the dinner (which is not criticism of restaurant, it is very good on it's own). In conclussion I just don't get what niche this hotel is filling, who stays there and why. The price for the rooms should be £75-95 tops. Shreesbury is not exactly prime tourists destination either (at least shouldn't). But it seems it is working out for them, I just would not recommend it, I would not stay in it again and it is definatelly not worth the price. Neither in isolation, nor in comparison.

Not serving drinks to a large table, expect you to walk down stairs to order from the bar. This is terrible with elderly people. All sat waiting for dinner, vegetables arrive once food is cold. Sauces arrived after dinner and the hot gray was brought to the table just before dessert. Very disorganised and awful service. The food itself would be average for its price. Perhaps for a table for two would be ok, as long as you don’t mind losing your partner for a while to get drinks.

The 4 star are because of the room being quite basic - mirror and plug (for hair styling) was in a awkward corner. The cleaning service was also poor - not more than 5 minutes went into making our room (just made the bed and cleaned the shower). Floors were left dirty. Overall I would recommend it but make sure you don’t get a room on the ground floor near the parking (my friend got one and she wasn’t impressed)

What incredible meals we had here. I have a couple of dietary intolerances which means that often I end up with limited and bland options when we eat out. However, the chef went out of his way to cook me a delicious meal that accommodated all of my needs. We had such a good meal that we cancelled our dinner reservations elsewhere the following evening so we could return to the Lion and Pheasant. Our second visit did not disappoint. We were recognised on arrival and I was offered the meal options available to me given my intolerances that had been remembered from the night before. I was able to enjoy a second delicious, and different, meal. It is a shame we live so far away or this would definitely become our regular place to eat out.

We stayed 2 nights for our wedding and have mixed feelings about this hotel. The hotel is beautiful and we loved the rabbit warren feeling and up and down floors. The bar area is nicely decorated although we didn't use it. Our biggest issue was with noise and light. On the first night, it was really warm so we had to open the windows, unfortunately, our first-floor room was in the front of the building next to the noisy road with traffic although the night. The other issue was a street light which lit up the room and as the curtains didn't close properly and the blind cover enough of the window it was bright all night long. On the second night, we decided to use the supplied fan instead of opening the window but this was just as noisy. The hotel does supply ear plugs but I don't really want to have to wear earplugs on a break. It feels harsh to knock stars off for the noise as the hotel probably can't do anything about the noise, but proper fitting curtains and blinds would help. Our other issue which is personnel preference is the hardness of the bed. It's was just far too hard and slim for our liking. The frame was metal and when your are 6’5 and kick the bottom if it, it hurts! The bathroom was of descent size, the shower could have done with a good scrub and the shower head had a few leeks. Breakfast was nice, a choice of drinks and a good selection to order from. Some of our party selections didn't arrive but this was sorted by the pleasant staff. Overall it's a nice hotel but we wouldn't choose to stay again due to the noise and comfort.

Ask for a room in the back, if you are in the front the road/cars noise is on all the time and will disturb your sleep (the ear plugs help, but your ears will hurt in the morning). If no rooms in the back, choose a different hotel as a lack of sleep is not fun. The hotel itself is lovely. Charmingly old school. The rooms are good size, the beds are firm and comfortable. The shower water flow is only ok. There are complimentary biscuits in the room (yum!). The breakfast is excellent, eggs in every shape and flavor, in addition to continental choices. The accommodation was pleasant, the staff were friendly and allowed us to park in a reserved space. Our room was clean and nicely presented but was near the restaurant so there was little noise late at night when we returned. Breakfast was included in the room rate, and was fairly nice.

Very comfortable pub restaurant at the bottom of Wyle Cop. Not eaten there but the cask ale is always well kept.

My second visit to the Lion and Pheasant. Not tourism, a funeral. But it was a relief after a heavy day to relax here in comfort. I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Shrewsbury.

I’ve stayed here and eaten both lunch and dinner here. Always great. The last time I ate here with my mother at a table in front of the fire. Just fabulous.

Very expensive hotel £225.75 for 1 night. Booked last minute, in a hurry. Didn't realise that there was no lift. Room was ok, TV was pretty small couldn't watch it in bed as was on a side table couldn't move it either as the cable wasn't long enough. Breakfast was dismissal, waited for 30 minutes, toast came 20 minutes before the breakfast bacon was well & truly cremated . I stayed in 3 hotels that week. This was not what I expected for the price.

Work's Christmas meal, a super venue, a big space ,classy decor, beautifully decorated for the festive season. Cannot fault the food , really really lovely, well presented, generous mains and starters and desserts equally as inviting. Whilst I appreciate we were a large party and obviously there were lots of other diners, the service was a little slow, particularly between courses. Overall though , it was a great evening , I would certainly recommend the venue and the food most highly. Will certainly return.

Nice hotel in a historic building with good restaurant. My room was convenient and sufficiently equipped. Close to the river which offers excellent walking and jogging routes.

We visited on Sunday 13th November at about 6pm for drinks but chanced a booking for food. Despite it being booking only for Sunday night the staff were so helpful and accommodating and gave us a great seat by a the log burner! The food, ambience and drinks were all absolutely fantastic, but the icing on the cake was the service! The gentleman that looked after us and the bar team were exceptional and myself and my partner are so grateful for the experience they gave us.

Set in 16th century building with contemporary touch. Bit of rabbit warren, but really nice to stay. Restaurant food was very good quality too

Great. Liked the little extras like the gift ear plugs. Choose room at the back - away from the road noise and you can keep an eye on your car in the car park, if you're lucky enough to get a place. Rooms good size and well furnished and decorated. Staff friendly and helpful. Good food!

We held our afternoon wedding reception here and it was absolutely perfect. Couldn’t ask for more from the staff and the food was gorgeous. Nothing too much trouble in the run up to the day. Was lovely to have the room upstairs to ourselves and our 30 guests. Would highly recommend for a celebration meal! Can’t wait to stay in the loft suite for our one year anniversary.

The studio was fantastic but the service is really bad I left something in the room and I call them 5 times and 4 times they said they will call me back to let me know and they did not call me. A week pass and I call them again just to know that they did not found anything (I left it there).

Really friendly pub, I was greeted by Caroline at the bar who was really happy. After a long day at work and away from home this was a lovely welcome. The mix grill was really good value and enjoyable. I will definitely come again.

We had a lovely meal here, happy with the price, the place was lovely and the staff were great. My only criticism was the carvery was a little cold. It felt like it had been prepared for lunch and wasn't so good by the evening.

Lovely people producing high quality meats. It’s difficult to pick a favourite as everything we bought here was delicious. Really well flavoured salamis, prosciutto and coppa and definitely try the black bacon cured in molasses for a really top notch breakfast. Also stocks a small range of good, mostly local preserves, cheeses and eggs.

Lovely food. Great front of house team especially Kaela who made the night with her sense of humour and attention to service. 👍 Thank you.
