Our meal was served to another table before they scooped it up and brought it to our table. My wife refused to eat it and I only eat a tiny bit but it was covered in this red dye sauce, but were charged full price. Three different servers asked how it was and we complained, all they said was "I'm sorry". The third time I was asked i said this is the third time someone said sorry but the price hasn't changed. They tried to add a service charge and I refused. The manager was there at the time and didn't seem concerned.

We booked ahead to cover a two hour wait between our arrival on the afternoon Scilly Ferry and departure on the night train to Paddington. (I had warned we would be have vast amounts of luggage including two fold-away canvas canoes in giant bags on wheels. Our overcrowded ferry had been late to arrive and slow to disembark, our stumble through town arduous, so we arrived with barely an hour to spare.)They found us a place to leave everything by the door, brought us water immediately (my wife loves that in a restaurant), taking a quick order for poppadoms. The restaurant was half full and immaculate; three waiters covering six tables. We were able to place our food order as soon as we'd scanned a very clearly laid out menu with just enough choice (Noakali, Jalfrezi, Passanda , Nizami plain rice and citrus rice). The food was very tasty after a day of travel, the service informal and friendly. They took onboard that we were in a hurry and advised us on meals that would be swift to prepare. Most importantly, when I asked for the bill, it came at once, so that we were able to get across to the station as soon as we were ready.Alll in all, I felt the food was good, the environment leasant, and the service simply excellent. What more could one ask for?

Went here for a meal after a very long day. Staff were friendly and the place looked immaculate. Unbeknown to us it wasn't licenced however that wasn't really am issue, however out soft drinks were flat which wasn't pleasant.Although the staff were friendly, the service was poor. It took far too long for the food to come, we nearly walked out. The curry I had was lovely, very tasty, plenty of meat and presented well. However my partners food was not so nice, big lumps of fat in the meat and didn't taste particularly nice. What didn't help was the waiter was hovering around the table the whole time we were there, I appreciate he was being attentive but he whipped my bowl of what he presumed finished curry before I'd actually finished it!!!

Have eaten here several times over the past few months, always with a group of friends and family. It’s high time I left a review...(Im Just catching up with My reviews after a busy couple of Months)The food is really delicious, my favourite being the Lamb bhuna , which i have had three times since first trying it, and I had the mushroom rice with this. Each time we have had several different starters and all shared them so that we could try them. On the occasions that I have gone there sometimes with up to 12 people I have not heard one of our party ever say that they did not like their food or service. The service has been friendly and helpful. The restaurant also offer a BYO for drinks as well as a drinks list.Any one not able to eat all of their meal were offered to have it packaged to take home. Possibly the worst curry I’ve ever eaten ,not sure if the chef was having a bad day as we have had it before and it’s been ok , we ordered chicken rogan josh , it was more like a watered down soup with no taste of curry at all, very very bland , like the chef had forgotten to put any curry powder/ flavouring when cooking , I don’t understand how you can make a curry without it tasting like curry ? The onion bhaji’s were decent. Will not be having it again.

We were hoping to go to our favourite curry house in Penzance but were sad to see it is closed on Mondays. So after a bit of a trawl on the internet we decided to go to the nearest to our guest house. When we walked in we were the only customers as it was early evening but we were treated very well, the staff advised of tasty dishes to try and were very attentive. We enjoyed our meal which was full of flavour. Something to note, this restaurant does not serve alcohol but you may take your own if you wish.

A lot of people arrived at the same time, plus they seemed busy with takeaways - but attending to the restaurant customers is important. Had a good meal here. The staff were very friendly and hospitable. A few of us are vegetarian and it made a pleasant change to receive dishes consisting of fresh vegetables instead of the usual frozen mixed veg too many curry houses just chuck in a sauce as a lazy option. Plus the food wasn't too greasy and everything was hot, nicely cooked and well presented. It was quiet when we arrived but soon filled up and had a nice vibe to the place. Would definitely return and our kids loved the food. Not the cheapest curry but the fact that you can take your own drinks keeps the cost down. Easy, free parking (between 4 & 9pm) just round corner by harbour.

We've been to the Light of Bengal often, with friends and large groups, and always had a nice evening - last night's visit was a funeral party for a friend, so we brought flowers and candles to put on the table. Our waiter was kind and very sympathetic, we had a lovely dinner and talked about our friend (who had also visited this restaurant), remembering happy times there. And the food was particularly good last night too - really liked the coconut rice. For anyone reading this - you have to remember that it's not licensed so you need to bring your own beer or wine, which is easily obtainable and the drinks are nicely dealt with once they're there. This is a good place to go for quiet dinners or for special occasions too.

The previous reviews seemed positive for this restaurant so my husband and I paid a visit. First of all we were told that they had an available table for us but would be unable to accept any card payments and directed us to the nearest cash machine which was a fair way up a steep hill. While I waited at the restaurant for my husband I tried to order an alcoholic drink but found out that they did not have a license. After a long tiring day out that was not good news so left without ordering. No apologies or explanations were offered so if customer service is a reflection on the food I would avoid at all costs!

Went here after finding the place on web ...staying about 10 miles away but really fancied an Indian one evening - this evening ! Penzance streets are quiet in April but car parking isn't easy. Light of Bengal is in an excellent location and on entering a really friendly helpful guy led us to a table - we had brought our own wine and drinks (so we parked the dray around the back - haha.) Nothing was too much trouble and the meals were all excellent - standard Indian menu of course but something indefinable caused us ( 5 of us ) to rant away at how good this food was - it was good. I would love to eat here regularly but the 8 hours from Millbrook means once or twice a year is more practicable. If you get the chance - go here - you will NOT be disappointed. We will return. Thank you Light of Bengal.

I visited the Light of Bengal in the last week of September, and thoroughly enjoyed my visit. It is like stepping back a few years, with the way the tables are arranged, etc, but nothing wrong with that when the food is this good. I had the chicken Naga, which was very hot but without losing its flavour. Side dishes of onion Baaji, Bombay potatoes, pilau rice, vegetable curry and peshnari naan were all good. The service was impeccable, friendly and efficient. The only reason I gave this place 4 and not 5 stars is the lack of alcohol licence. True, you are welcome to take your own but I prefer to be served wine, beer etc as part of the meal. But a very good restaurant with excellent food.

Whilst staying overnight nearby, popped in for an evening meal. Initial impression is of a somewhat gloomy, echo-y, utilitarian cavern devoid of greenery, oriental decor and nick-nacks normally associated with an Indian restaurant, but our welcome was warm and the staff obliging. Although there was a comprehensive soft drinks list the waiter explained that they didn't serve alcohol (presumably for religious reasons), but that there was an off-licence just a few doors along. To me, a curry and a cold beer are inseparable companions, so I was soon able to put that small deficiency right. Our curries (Madras chicken and Ceylon chicken) arrived promptly and were delicious. Our overall experience was good and we would certainly return, but the ambience is not conducive to a romantic supper for two!

We visited Light of Bengal while on holiday in the area. The staff were extremely welcoming, interacting with our little 2 year old. The food was very good - we had the dhansak, passanda and the chicken tikka main. All were extremely tasty. Highly recommend

A local friend of mine insisted that I try some curry and I do not regret it. The food is well-tasting and the portions are decent. All in all, it's one of the top curry joints in Penzance if not THE top.

We went in as were greeted with a friendly staff. We were a group of 12 people and the place we were given was too clumsy. The food was bland and we had to ask.for some salt, which didn't arrive till we finished the food. Overall an average restaurant.

Nice interior decor and a wide variety on the menu, we were pleasantly surprised to be one of on ly a couple of groups here in early May for dinner. Its BYOB but there's a couple of shops conveniently located on the high street. Theres not much else open at night - the high street (Market Jew Street) is mainly a daytime destination. But the food was very good, well prepared and the service was excellent.

Recommended by a friend who had recently eaten here, and was assured that they could veganise our food. Each dish was presented in plastic take out cartons, full to brimming... The coconut rice was absolutely delicious. The Biryani which my husband had he rated as high as our local Hertfordshire 'a la carte' restaurant, for flavour and texture. My madras was lovely without dairy. Chapathi's were equally good. My friend is not vegan, and when she tried the Tarka Dhall, she said she would order next time. Definitely coming back to the Light of Bengal, very nice staff members, and they deliver to hotels etc. so if you're staying, check out the online menu and they'll bring it to your door! Definitely recommend. Not pricey at all, compared to Hertfordshire!! Thank you LoB, lovely meal.

We attended for a joint birthday celebration and had an enjoyable evening. The food was good as was the service. You're able to bring your own drinks and there is a shop two doors up at which you can purchase drinks if you arrive without. It's a handy location with good parking near by.

Pleasant staff but food rather dull. My course looked as though it had simply been microwaved for five minutes. Not particularly tasty. On balance it was OK but no better or worse than hundreds of other Indian, Pakistani or Bangladeshi restaurants up and down the country. No alcohol license but that's no problem as can buy wine or beer three shops up the street which the restaurant is pleased to serve and provide glasses. In fact a benefit as you don't have to pay the usual restaurant mark up.

We were greeted warmly by the staff and shown to a table this is a Bring your own Alcohol restaurant and we had a bottle of Prosecco champagne flutes were produced and we, my wife and myself ,ordered .Food was good service excellent, at one point the waiter was running to deliver the food, and all for a very reasonable price.Highly recommended.

Took my dad here Saturday night for his birthday,we were greeted by a very friendly member of staff and seated at a table for 4 by the window, restaurant appeared very clean and tidy.Waiter was excellent and very attentive, food was served promptly and piping hot with all starters, mains and breads being delicious. Also was lovely to have a chat with Mia,the manager(formerly of The Taj,PZ),with him at the helm I think this will be a very popular venue in Penzance.

After a long day walking we were all craving a curry for dinner and we decided to go into Light of Bengal - which turned out to be a great choice! We were offered a choice of tables and from the very beginning the service was friendly and professional. They even made sure whether the music wasn't too loud! It is a bring your own alcohol restaurant, and they will tell you where the nearest shop is, otherwise there is a fair selection of soft drinks. There is a good range of traditional Indian curries as well as few English dishes (good move for when there are kids or people in the group not so keen on Indian food). The coconut rice is amazing and goes well with any of the sauces. We ordered a range of different curries between us and my favourite was veg balti and a dhal side dish. The portions are just right, not small but not too large which is good because you can manage to finish your meal! Worth mentioning that the curries weren't too oily or too heavy, which can sometimes be a problem. It's an authentic restaurant with a first class service, a good place to come with a group of friends. It gets busy later at night so it's probably best to book in advance.

Booked here for Valentines night after it being recommended, and were not disappointed! We had a very friendly welcome, and were offered different tables (either near the radiator or window) The service and food were perfect! I had a salmon bhuna which I had never tried before, 2 big salmon steaks in a deliciously seasoned sauce. Chili and coriander naan bread was also excellent. It's BYO which makes it a much cheaper evening. We had a lovely chat with the very friendly manager, and was even given a red rose for Valentines! We will certainly go back on our next visit to Penzance.

Just had a meal here. No alcohol sold but you can take your own. Sunning meal - I had tawa chicken garlic chilli with onion rice and my partner had chicken tikka madras with coconut rice and shared a chilli and coriander nan. One of the best curries I have eaten. Food outstanding and staff could not do enough for us. A great place to eat.

Have had 3 or 4 take aways from them now always fast delivery and food to die for have had a different dish every time and everyone has been beyond my expectations. Easy to deal with reasonably priced and amazing food means I would recommend the Light of Bengal to anyone considering an Indian in the area.

We did book as we were told it get's busy. The reason for that is because the whole experience is great. From the time you walk in until the time you walk out is a joy. The waiters are friendly, and eager to please, the food is amazing with quick service too. I did think the service would be slow with people walking in for takeaways, but I didn't have to worry. I will be back in March. Thank you.

First class family restaurant, 2nd time visiting, phenomenal cuisine both occasions, the chicken Pathia was gorgeous, best I’ve tasted. Father and son waiting on tables, great team, you can’t go wrong, give it a go! 👏👏👏👏

We ordered two each papadams(sp?), two onion bajiis(sp?) and we each order chicken tikka masala. After eating the papadams we were served to our surprise, three each onion bajiis instead of the one each that we expected. After eating those which were too filling I was no longer really that hungry, but then the chicken tikkas were served. My chicken was so over cooked it was like cutting rubber but the sauce was tasty. I also have to say that the sauces served with the papadams were some of the best I have ever had in an Indian restaurant although the owner and servers were from Bangladesh. So, some good and some bad, consequently the average rating
