Lovely room with old books and comfy seating, mixed so you can look out onto the gardens or have a cosy corner. Staff excellent and friendly. Probably not the best time to have an evening meal but wanted a change from the restaurant and nothing open in Ruthin Boxing Day. Rarebit was burnt at the corners and when my son complained he was told that was how it came.

We arrived late on Friday evening and were made to feel very welcome indeed. The atmosphere is truly lovely and we felt relaxed from the moment we arrived. There was due to be a wedding and so lots of guests were arriving and there was an air of excitement! We enjoyed our food and drinks a then left to look around the grounds. It is stunning and the works already completed show a vision of the new owners. We were delighted to sample the before and will be back to see the changes and improvements. Though the grounds are already naturally beautiful! We are leaving relaxed and recharged! Thank you to all the staff who worked so hard to make sure we enjoyed our stay.

I went here yesterday with my friend for lunch as a change to where we normally eat out in ruthin and what a disappointment. It was very quiet in their only one other elderly couple where in their having a drink. We asked for the lunch menu and straight away I was disappointed with the choice, but thought I would go for something light and chose the welsh rarebit, while my friend chose a ham sandwich and 'twice cooked' chips. We waited about half an hour for our meals and mine arrived with a sorry looking side salad and was burnt on the edges at the same time my friends chips arrived in a tiny oval bowl no bigger than a dips bowl ( and at £4 we certainly expected more), we then sat and waited another five minutes at least for her sandwich to arrive, and what an over priced disappointment that was too, again a sorry looking side salad accompanied her sandwich which was what looked like normal pre-packed ham on regular sliced bread. Now people may think im being picky but when your paying £5.95 for a sandwich you expect it at least to be decent ham on nice fresh sliced bread. While the food is not something I would recommend the staff tried there best, and the customer service was good. one young man was serving in the behind the bar, bringing the food, stocking the bar, taking orders (another couple came in when we were there). He was later joined by another member of staff whom we overheard telling the other couple they had had a very busy weekend and that they were restocking after a brewery delivery. So maybe the lack of staff was due to that, but I really don't know the reason for the poor food, that is extremely overpriced. II know that me and my friend wont be returning in a hurry and I certainly wont be recommending it to anyone anytime soon. It is however a great shame as the surroundings are beautiful.

We were directed to the main dining room for an afternoon tea which had been gifted to us. It was a somewhat underwhelming experience. Naomi the waitress was honest and charming and knew a lot about local restaurants. The finger sandwiches were on the scarce side, salmon and brown bread; I would have liked egg and cress in addition. The scones were almost warm, three of them, with ample clotted cream and a tiny pot of strawberry jam and a small pot of lemon curd. The other bits were poor; certainly no appetising cream cakes. Expensive.Lowering the price for two could bring in locals regularly.

My eldest daughter had bought me a Delux Afternoon Tea experience from BuyaGift for Mother's Day and it was a most wonderful experience. On booking the tea, the young lad who spoke to me, informed me of what the tea consisted of. I voiced my worries over my not liking butter on my sandwiches, whereas my husband and son do - no problem at all, "you're just like me" he replied. I also asked whether it was ok to bring my son as the gift was for two - no problem, "the tea's are more than sufficient for 3 people". The hotel itself is very grand and we were made to feel like royalty. We explored the grounds and made friends with a couple of peacocks! All in all, a wonderful place for a fabulous experience. Many, many thanks

My husband and I been today to Library Bar. So far we were very happy every time we've been there, but today was HORRIBLE!!The waiter dropped 2 pieces of sugar on the tray, took them and put them back on top of the other pieces. We said nothing as we thought it's just a slip. I must admit we were selfish for not saying anything as we don't put any sugar in the tea. After a long wait and another customer reminded them of the scones... we've received the deserts. I've ordered scones, my husband ordered flapjack. The scones weren't warm, I didn't received a knife or something to put the cream&jam on, the jam was shop-bought and not very good quality. The scones weren't fresh and they looked like shop-bought too. Our waiter managed to make a lot of noise when he walked, when he put the orders on the table. I know we were very unlucky as the other waiters looked more relaxed and less clumsy. I was very disappointed of the deserts, waiter's attitude, the price (more expensive as Hilton Liverpool or Betty's Tea Rooms in Harrogate!!) and pretty much everything that wasn't the castle. We've been to Liberty Bar at Ruthin on several occasion, but this level of unprofessional behavior will deter us from going again.

We came here for afternoon tea and were very disappointed. The scones were not homemade and certainly not fresh. They did allow my husband to substitute coffee for tea which I should have done when I realised that they used tea bags. Surely afternoon tea is all about loose tea served in china cups not one tea bag in a cheap cup. The service was terribly and the atmosphere was as cold as the castle. It is a real shame as the setting is perfect. Don't waste your money and go to the sugar plum tea room instead.

A cold winter's day, we went for lunch as it was my birthday. Service excellent and food lovely but it was so cold people were sat right beside the radiators in the library bar and I didn't take my coat off. We are great fans of this beautiful hotel all year round but the winter charm was in our opinion created by the lovely log fires. The modern electric fires that have now replaced these and gave out no heat, are a very sad substitute... this may well be a false economy as I am sure it will impact negatively on the winter trade.

My husband and I were given a voucher for a 'Deluxe afternoon tea' at Ruthin Castle as a present for our coming Wedding Anniversary on September 23rd. Having read the review by Jan P I wonder if our tea was the Deluxe - we certainly didn't have any cream cakes as she described! We had a couple of tiny welsh cakes each - they were warm and were the only thing I could describe as delicious. We were so excited having had our Wedding Reception at this hotel 46 years ago. How disappointing it was! Our scones were stale - but the cream and jam did disguise this to a certain degree.

My husband and I visited Ruthin Castle for a Del-Luxe afternoon tea, which was really lovely,we had ham and picle, cucumber and cream cheese and smoked salmon sandwiches, 2 scones each with a pot of jam and lots of clotted cream, which love, then there was a cream filled chocolate eclair, followed by biscuits and two pieces of fruit cake each, neither of us could finish it all so , I wrapped it in a serviette and took it home, we had also had fresh coffee, theelibrary room was lovely , with leather settees and chairs, and a beautiful large fireplace, the other rooms were also lovely, lots of paintings and armour etc, the gounds are marvellous and we saw a family of peacocks, mum, dad and four chicks, there was also a croquet court and the bedrooms are out of this worls, one has a four poster bed, I would reccomend Ruthin Castle to anyone, who likes something a bit special.

5 May 2013I was not staying there.I attended a meeting of a social group who meet monthly at this location.Ordered a meal from the dining area in the Peacock Room, from the bar menu.Due to our group having to have a presentation for the mornings activity we decided to move to a room that had been allocated to us,a function room,King Charles,if memory serves. Due to HEALTH AND SAFTEY the staff could not bring my meal too me..................fishcakes! I could however carry it my self! A stranger to the establishment walking around with knife fork, drink and one of these piece of slate type plates.Health and Saftey? They have no idea what it is,they want to work in my industry thats when health and Saftey comes to the fore,In my game you could dissapear into a machine and NEVER be seen again with no one knowing where you had gone. A hospitality establishment that is unable to serve food in a room with dining tables and chairs? Pull the other one, because you will not pull mine again.I may have to visit every month but in future my hand will stay well away from my wallet, not a penny will be spent.Oh and the food?Beyond poor, two fishcakes with, what seemed to be,frozen prawns and supermarket style sweet chilli sauce for £9-95!How put out the waiter looked when I took all my change, right down to the last 5p.

My wife had the tradional tea, whilst my son and I had the savoury tea. Both were an absolute delight and of the highest quality, and you could even but sparking wine by the glass. The surroundings were beatiful, the grounds well kept and the main building amazing, in fact my wife was so taken she is organising a girlie weekend at the hotel.Just one word of warning - look out for the peacocks, one pinched my crumpet!!!!!!!!!

I went to Ruthin Castle with my Mum and Nana last thursday for afternoon tea. When we arrived here was a choice of sweet or savoury and tea or coffee for £11.95. The savoury included a crumpet with bacon and welsh rarebit, a cheese scone and a selection of open sandwiches. The sweet included 3 small sandwiches, a scone with cream and jam, some welsh cakes and a strawberry meringue. All food was delicious and seemed freshly made, my welsh cakes were even warm. There was plenty to eat, if not too much! My only complaint about the food would be that the sandwiches on the savoury menu were far superior to those on the sweet.Staff were very friendly and helpful. One of our coffees had a bit of paper in it but they were wonderfully apologetic and brought a new one straight away. Soft drinks were reasonably priced and came in a nice big glass.I would definitely recommend to anybody to go, the food is delightful in such a beautiful setting, there is a fire that is lit when it gets a bit colder aswell. I can't wait to go back!
