Excellent food and good VFM in this restaurant earlier this evening. Very extensive menu amd great quality food for such a small town - and all that well in to the autumn. Casual and friendly in style. would well recommend. Lawrie West, Dunfwrmline, Fife. Sat 5 Oct 2024.

Definitely get a reservation. We were there at end of September and called late afternoon for a table and got one of the last 3 for the night! They were all gone by the time we arrived. The cullen skink was too hot to eat at first (as a soup should be) and was hearty and filling. My mother had the pork loin with stilton, walnuts snd a sauce that I’m not sure what it was. This was a combination of flavors I would not have considered but she loved it and the bite she shared either me was really good. My entree I jokingly described as Scottish chicken cordon bleu: beautifully roast chicken (slightly crisp outside (not skin) with moist meat, girded in ham, topped with a whisky sauce and stuffed with haggis. It was amazing! The chicken tender, the haggis balanced perfectly. I gave my mother a taste (she was leery of haggis) and now she wants it again! If you have never tried gourmet haggis - try it here! Would go again. Would recommend.

We've been visiting Newtonmore for years and not noticed this little gem. We booked on the day of visiting but were clearly lucky as it was full when we arrived. The food and service were both fab, the specials board held some unique dishes and two of us had the starter of salmon and avodcado and cod and scallops for main which was beautifully cooked. We will definitely return.

Whether you’re staying local or simply passing by on the A9 - a 2 minute detour into Newtonmore will get you to this little gem of a place. We booked in advance for Sunday evening and was met with a warm welcome. We had a choice of seats and as we had our dog with us, we were seated in the front of the restaurant near the window. Perfect. The menu choices were plentiful and some very interesting and unique dishes. I went for the Mushroom, Stilton, Spinach, Apple and Walnut pie with vegetables. Followed by the profiteroles. Absolutely delicious ! Cooked to perfection. The service was excellent. The background music low and tasteful. What a lovely place to dine out. A credit to the owners and staff and a real bonus for the locals and passing tourists.

Away for a few days and googled this restaurant so booked for tonight. Very impressed the food was very good and well presented. So many choices but the star of the evening was the Greek lamb shank it melted in your mouth. The avocado and prawn starter was also very refreshing. Hubby had mushroom soup which was delicious with sliced mushrooms in it and main course pheasant which was 2 breasts !!! Very clean and staff very nice. I can not comment on toilets as we never went

We chose to eat out at the Letterbox restaurant because it offered a more varied and creative menu to the standard hotel fare. The owner Douglas was very welcoming and clearly proud of his food. We had the racklette of pork to start with which came with homemade chutney with flavours of dates, cinnamon and ginger. I had a lamb shank cooked with muscavado sugar, cinnamon and ginger in the flavouring finishing off with a berry pavlova. The food was excellent and the ambience cosy. Would definitely recommend. Food was really tasty plenty choice. Haggis filo parcel was really tasty. Pate starter was delicious. Husband had pork which was lovely and the veg cooked perfect. Courgette carrot parsnip mangetout and broccoli. I had morrocan chicken which was delicious my only thing was the chicken wasn't cooked in the sauce but served with it. The only negative was only one waitress for 24 customers. The girl did really well but was obviously rushed

We chose The Letterbix on the basis of their website sample menu, but in reality, the food did not live up to expectations. My salmon and mackerel starter tasted bland and was possibly not long removed from the fridge. A garnish of a few pieces of tomato, cucumber and salad leaves demonstrated a lack of imagination although the plate was rescued by the chutney which tasted home-made.Main courses were okay but lacked the finesse to warrant fine dining prices. As one reviewer previously mentioned the vegetables deserve more attention and flair (school dinners come to mind) and why do chefs always undercook broccoli? Not much to say about the desserts except the waitress mistakingly referred to the cream as 'clotted' when, in actual fact, it was more like Chantilly cream. The wine list was also underwhelming - at this type of restaurant you would expect a bottle of Australian chardonnay to be bottled at source - sadly, it wasn't.

Went for an early dinner, had the lentil & vegetable soup to start and the venison haunch with roast potatoes and fresh steamed veggies. Absolutely perfectly cooked venison, potatoes like my Mum would roast them, wonderful homemade soup. And the chef accommodated me with gluten free bread to accompany the soup and gluten free gravy for my venison.Paid £31 all up including a glass of wine, and serving size I couldn’t finish. 2 hours for 2 courses is incredibly slow and the food itself was very average and overpriced. My partner requested no coriander in her meal and got so much I (as a lover of the stuff) thought too much. Edible though.Other tables had equally slow service, very little apology (if at all) from staff, others also seemed to have problems with orders as well - sad considering the supposedly positive reviews which lead to us booking.Eat out to help out or not, the meal was still overpriced and not up to scratch. Would have been £57.40 for 2 mains, 2 desserts and 2 soft drinks at full price - £42.40 with the discount. Meanwhile, we ate at The Glen Hotel the previous night and 2 courses, 1 dessert and 2 soft drinks was £15.50. Madness. Also, a mysterious £5 charge for "VAT" on our bill. Queried with waitress but got a ridiculous response about the restaurants VAT status. If you want to charge extra ontop of a bill, include this info on the menu! Not worth causing a fuss over, but its a matter of principle.

Treated to a delicious meal at this restaurant last night by my friends. Plenty choice of starters, mains and desserts. Everything was cooked to order. For starters we had the lightly battered mushrooms and the game terrine. The mains were the almond dusted haddock gougons and pork in a cider and grainy mustard and apple sauce. I was the only one to have a dessert which was the blueberry brûlée. Superb - what more can I say.

We go on holiday with my wife’s parents each year and for the first time in the three years of our week long holidays we returned to the same restaurant. The owner, Dougie, was on his own the first night and he worked front of house and the kitchen. Don’t know how he did it but he did it with a smile on his face and the food arrived quickly (well as quick as I would expect fresh food to arrive) and was cooked superbly. The sauces are the star of the show. Desserts excellent. On the second night, his front of house staff member was working and she was excellent too - very friendly and efficient. This is a really excellent restaurant on the main street in Newtonmore in the Cairngorms. Dougie is a brilliant chef, and we had a delicious last evening in the Highlands. The food was perfectly presented and cooked, with a decent wine list and friendly service. Good value for the quality, but watch out that they only take cash. There is an ATM directly opposite, but be warned. Dougie explained the reasons for this, which are sensible, but be aware nonetheless.

Nous avons très bien mangé dans ce restaurant ; en revanche, nous étions installés dans le passage entre la première et la deuxième salle, et c'est la première fois, alors qu'on n'était pourtant pas pressé du tout, que la lenteur du service nous gêne. I am here on business and have eaten here several times. The food is the best in the village/town. Prices are a on the high side for the area, (£20) for main course , but it’s worth paying when you consider what is available at other places. I have just been hung up on after trying to book a table for myself and my partner, we both have allergies and I had asked about what deserts could be provided. I was told it wouldn't be impressive so I had politely suggested I could send a recipe in advance to them so something was available for us. The gentleman I spoke to got very defensive and told me I was being cheeky and had rattled him and he couldn't be doing with that. Its always nice to know your local restaurants are willing to cater for your needs. A little aprehensive after seeing some poor reviews but our hosts had been before and it turned out to be a good recommendation; our experience was very good. They were short of staff but put in extra management effort to ensure our evening went smoothly. There are some very good places in the area doing good bar food but this is the place to head if you are looking for a 'proper' quiet resaurant evening. Good menu choice, well prepared and presented and good value for money. Be aware that the place is not large and Newtonmore gets a great many visitors, so I would recommend booking in advance. The quality of the food was excellent. I started with fresh crab and avocado, followed by pheasant. They appear to specialise in local seasonal products and that showed in the flavoursome dishes served. Only slight downside was the slowness of service, the waiter was extremely friendly but appeared to be run off his feet, which meant my friends had to enjoy their mains with empty glasses as it took so long for the ordered wine to come. However would definitely return, maybe just order drinks in good time and expect a leisurely pace of meal!

Came here with a group of friends at the end of our walking holiday. For a small place it has a very extensive menu and we all really enjoyed our meals. My crab salad starter was particularly good, and the pavlova I had for dessert was excellent. There was one young chap acting as waiter and barman. He was very friendly and helpful and gave us some great recommendations - but he was clearly rushed off his feet and a second member of staff would have made our experience in the restaurant much smoother. Checked Trip Advisor to find a nice restaurant on the A9 near Aviemore and found the reviews interesting. I rang at 8:20pm to book a table for that evening, I was not put off by the response of 'we are about to shut, pop in and see what the bar man says". As I had read the reviews, I was not surprised by the somewhat noncommittal response and we went along. The young bar man, who covered all front of house jobs was a pleasure. The whole menu was descriptive, interesting and extensive (can be viewed online). The quality of the food was exceptional, portions generous and service personal. This extended to the detail and interaction with our 12 year old and his meal. The prices were in line with the quality and detail put into the meals. I would highly recommend this restaurant and wished it was local to me.

It has a varied menu with a wide choice of vegetarian options, all food is freshly prepared so expect to wait, and there is only one chef... our only problem with the evening was the surreal waitress, changing drinks we had ordered as she thought we would like something else, saying there was no port when there was a bottle in clear sight, having to ask several times for our drinks as she was more interested in talking constantly about anything, you just wanted to say “can we just have our drinks”, very faulty towers, when ordering she asks how you like the meat cooked then pipes in but the chef decides anyway! Having said that my steak was perfect. All in all this place is a gem they just need to look at the front of house as we would of had more wine etc if it hadnt taken so long and constant prompts, and the innane chatter from the waitress was annoying to the point of laughing as you couldnt believe she was rambling again...very fawlty towers

We visited this restaurant on Saturday 22nd July 2018. I have no idea what the name of the waitress was, she didn’t have a badge with that on it but she was excellent, bubbly, knowledgable and very helpful. The food was very good and obviously individually prepared so the chef was pretty good too!!!

While staying nearby we dined at this wonderful little restaurant in Newtonmore. We didn’t have a reservation and it was close to closing, but we were warmly welcomed. My husband tried the haggis which he enjoyed immensely and I had the calamari. Won’t disappoint!

We stumbled across this wonderful place at the end of a long day of hiking. So glad we did. The menu was superb..plenty of veggie/vegan choice too. Nothing was too much trouble for Keiron, the owner and chef. The food itself was beautifully cooked. All fresh and , having chatted with Keiron, locally sourced. Do yourself a favour and support an independent, family run business at the same time. Brilliant grub. (The pic is of my starter, squid with spiced melon. It was gorgeous!).

We visited a number of years ago but this meal was much more to our taste and delicious. Maybe made better choices? We chose from the specials on the blackboard. Both loved the salad type starter. The pork steak with stilton we both loved as it was so tasty. I feasted on a blueberry brulee to finish. A nice house red was enjoyed with our meal. The vivacious young lady who served us was a delight and great fun. Will return for sure

This was a fabulous restaurant in every respect. It is physically appealing with a warm, welcoming ambience. The waitress on duty was knowledgeable, efficient and good humoured not to mention energetic. As a party with some rather unusual dietary needs (extremely low carb) the chef tweaked dishes to suit us and mixed and matched whatever we requested in order for us to get a suitable meal. The food itself was all freshly made and used high quality ingredients. We would go out of our way on future trips to the area just to dine here again. Probably advisable to book during busy periods as they were certainly busy the night we dined and had to turn customers away. Thanks to the staff there for a lovely night out. :)

Echt heerlijk gegeten, kinderen van 11 en 9 hadden van het gewone menu gegeten en borden waren schoon op. Was echt geweldig, ook de eigenaar is super begaan en gezellig. Volgende keer Schotland gaan we hier zeker weer speciaal langs.

We visited newtonmore as a group of 14 people so when we thought we'd go for a meal out we didn't expect to find anywhere to take us, but when I called the gentleman was more than happy to fit us all in at half 8, right on the cusp of last orders and was very understanding when we didn't make it until quarter to. The starter I had of almond crusted goats cheese with caramelized onions was literally the tastiest thing I think I have ever eaten. Moreover they only had two staff, the owner and a new lad yet the service was excellent throughout. The mains were also delicious all round and my salmon was so fresh and perfectly cooked you could really tell that care had gone into it. Everyone else had a great meal too, the only downside was we were too full for dessert which also looked amazing! The business owner was a really lovely guy, answering all of our tricky tourist questions about the local area, even when we were being a bit boring. It wasn't even expensive either so I would 100% recommend to anyone staying in Newtonmore or surrounding.

The Letterbox restaurant in Newtonmore provides honest decent cooking at very reasonable prices - a definite step up from 'pub grub' while not claiming to be haute cuisine. Open only for dinner in the evenings, we found the menu choice to be excellent, food very good and service friendly, professional and efficient.

We know the Tongue area very well, and like to eat locally, so it was obvious we would decide to eat at the Craggan, and i'm happy we did! The restaurant area is welcoming and clean, staff friendly, and the car park was easy even with a big van. The only problem was choosing from the menu! So many tasty things - i wish we had more time to visit again.. All three of us enjoyed our food, and we shared everything so i know it was all delicious. Thank you for making a rather wet evening so special..

I recently had the pleasure of spending a delightful day at Dores Inn, and I still find myself reminiscing about the experience six months later. Nestled along the shores of the iconic Loch Ness, this charming inn offers a perfect blend of stunning views, a warm atmosphere, and exceptional service. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a lovely ambiance that sets the tone for a relaxing visit. The inn has ample seating, both indoors and outdoors, making it easy to find a cozy spot to enjoy the picturesque scenery. We opted for an outside table, and it turned out to be the best decision of the day. The views of the loch were absolutely breathtaking, providing a serene backdrop for our meal. Speaking of the meal, I must rave about the food—simply sublime! I usually find coleslaw unappealing, but Dores Inn's homemade version was a game changer. It was fresh, flavorful, and complemented our dishes beautifully. Every bite was a testament to the culinary care that goes into their offerings. After our satisfying meal, we joined a Rib-Boat journey on the loch, which was an exhilarating way to experience the surroundings. The thrill of speeding across the water, combined with the breathtaking views of the loch and its mythical charm, made for an unforgettable adventure. As a memento of our day, I couldn't resist purchasing one of their handmade crochet teddies of Nessie. It's now a cherished keepsake that brings back fond memories of our visit. To wrap up our day, we took a leisurely walk along the shoreline. The tranquility of the loch, coupled with the stunning natural beauty surrounding us, was the perfect ending to a fantastic day. Overall, Dores Inn exceeded my expectations in every way. From the lovely atmosphere and great views to the delectable food and friendly service, it’s a place I highly recommend. If you're looking for an exceptional day out near Loch Ness, don’t miss the opportunity to visit this gem. I still think about that wonderful day, and I can’t wait to return!

This was a lovely experience, the food was not ' swimming in grease' as i saw from another review, but it was great to see that the more recent reviews have been validated. We went here for my birthday at the end of october and honestly everything was really lovely . the service was great they were so friendly from the getgo, the charcuterie board we had for starter was very filling and diverse just wish they would have told us what the cheeses were ( i think the brie was from tain though it was familair) but thats a minor niggle that we had no info. the main courses were fab the skin on chips were AMAZING , and its a dog friendly place which we loved , we dont have dogs but we did get to pet some which made our day !
