The interior is like someone's front room. The wardrobe for coats is both one you swear you had as a child and one you swear was at that flat you rented a few years ago. The Christmas decorations aren't sparing, but they're the same tinsel and paper mobiles your family put up in the 90s. The colour scheme is yellow and red and doesn't seem to have changed since then either. The lighting is low. The clientele all seem to be some flavour of nerd, and they all know Marc. Who's Marc? He's the restaurant, of course, although he's been magnanimous enough to name the place after his regulars, of which I suppose I'm one, as I'm writing this after my sixth visit. Proud, sharp, witty, a little morose in the most admirable way, and a consummate restaurateur; he employs seemingly no staff, handling cooking, waitering and front of house all by himself. The first time I visited, I was concerned at the noises he made about closing some day soon, and was adamant that someone should continue Les Associés after he retires or dies, whichever is easier, but now I have changed my mind. The restaurant is him and he is it, and when he leaves it shall leave too. It's the way it has to be. Whether anyone else maintains a restaurant which has this ambiance, this perfect emulsion of Parisian bistrot and 1990s London, after it is gone is another matter, and it is with a sense of the singularity of this experience along with the overwhelming feeling of wellbeing experienced after leaving that I return with compulsive regularity despite now living on the exact opposite side of the city. There is simply no better restaurant experience in London, for me; this is less lightning in a bottle than a particularly jaunty wooden ship. Tonight I looked up from my upholstered schoolroom chair through one of the few panes in the front door that wasn't frosted like panes in the doors of both my and my partner's childhood homes, and saw the sign on the health centre opposite: 'Active Wellbeing', reflecting with enormous glee on the precisely converse nature of la belle vie found where I sat. The food? Oh, I usually have the guineafowl with prunes, but my partner wanted that this time, so I had the pheasant, whose own sauce was inscrutably delicious, and whose garnish of luscious dauphinoise was unvarying from its alternative. I chose the fish soup rather than the onion this time; I chose his frozen nougat as dessert. Both were perfect, of course. Next time I come, I'll probably get the onion soup. I might go back to the guineafowl. I'll probably try his creme brulee. I'll look at those photocopied handwritten menus with his time-honoured classics, his repertoire inked in the same way as it was the first time, and I might change a detail of my order here and there, but I'll definitely get at least one thing I've had before, and I'll chat to Marc about recent food discoveries I've had in the same garrulous way I always do, and I'll have the same experience I have every time I come here, which is the point you know, to have the same experience, to relive this idyll, this impossible transportation thirty to forty years into a past that doesn't, that couldn't exist anywhere else in this city. Further, even; I wasn't alive in the 1970s, and yet, craning my neck to gaze at the bar and its array of liqueurs, I could swear I've ended up in them. And before I can gaze too long, Marc will be there, buzzing to each table with an assiduity you simply wouldn't credit a one-man band with. It's an illusion; it must be. Nobody could be constantly at each table, chatting merrily to every client, even as he cooks their dinner. It is impossible, it is magic. Yet disbelief suspends at Les Associés. For the mark of the very best restaurants is not astonishment. It is a simplicity of logic; ah, it must be like this, it has always been like this, and it may not always be like this, so best come as often as is reasonable. There is so much to be said for visiting a restaurant in search of surprise. Somehow there is even more for the sublimity of experience foreknown.

Went on a Friday night at 7.30pm and the place was quiet, ended up being only us and one more table of two in there all night. Not their fault but made me wonder how busy they are. This of course really impacted the ambience of the place. In general the place is quaint in an oldy woldy kind of way. It’s a two-man show; husband is out front and he is attentive, I like his French manner about him, and his wife is in the kitchen. They only have one house red by the glass/carafe, which is a pity although the one they had was good. We ordered the duck pate which was fresh and roughly ground. I’d give this one a 6/10 it lacked a bit of flavour. We then ordered two mains to share the duck breast with fig sauce was nice, although the centre of the breast was very pink and cool and the skin was not crispy, it was slightly but more chewy fatty vibes and it was served with steamed greens that I couldn’t tell had any butter or anything on them, and delicious potato wedges - I’d give this a 6/10. The beef rib was the star of the show, cooked for 5 hours so it melted off the bone and it was succulent and divine, rich in flavours but not sickly rich, and served with divine crispy potato wedges - I’d give that a 9/10. Lastly we had creme brûlée and chocolate mousse for dessert; the crème brûlée was not nice, the consistency was far to runny and had liquid floating in it although the taste was nice the balance of sweetness was not there - 4/10; and the chocolate mousse had an interestingly thick almost bready consistency, and I found it much to dark and bitter for my liking but I think many would love it (I prefer a light, airy more milk chocolate mousse) - so I’d give this a 6/10. All dishes in my view were not presented well enough, which is why I took a point off for each so if that does fuss you much ok. In general my friend and I had a wonderful time here, we were engrossed in conversation and we enjoyed the food accepting the situation and food for what it is. However I’m not sure I would return as it’s expensive and competition elsewhere.

Classic French cooking to a very high standard. It's a one man show, but that man knows what he is doing and does it well. Highlights were scallops and chicken liver starter and creme brulee for dessert. Decor is a bit dated but somehow fits the experience perfectly. We've been around and about in crouch end for 40+ years and this place has stood the test of time so they must be doing something right.

As close to a traditional French restaurant as your likely to find anywhere in the UK. Very cosy and intimate and set amongst a row of houses, you could easily walk right past without noticing it. We haven’t been to this restaurant in over 20 years but revisited last night with friends Yes the decor is a bit tired but the food was as good as we remembered. Good menu -not so great if you are vegetarian though. Waiter service very efficient but unobtrusive-kept us topped up with great bread and jugs of water -attentive but not rushed Had a Kir Royale aperitif Chicken livers to start-the mussels were great as were the scallops Main course we all had the pork that was delicious with dauphinois potatoes and fresh veg which was included in the price Only 2 of us could squeeze in dessert-so we had 1 tarte tatin and 1 cheese plate which we all shared Couple of bottles of nice Sauvignon!! All perfect !! Really had a great meal and evening especially as there is no background music so we could all chat away to our hearts content. We will definitely be returning and it will be much sooner than 20 years time !!

Really surprised by the good reviews. Walked in on a Saturday at 6pm and it was empty. One of the workers was sat down at a table and sneered at us. The decor is faded and old, but like all good French restaurants it’s not the look of the place but the food and ambiance, and Les Associes has both. We had the chicken liver and the goats cheese for starters. The goats cheese was good, but the chicken liver salad was really delicious. To follow, we had the duck in fig sauce and the entrecôte. The duck was the star, but the steak was also good. The cheese platter could have done with a little more warming up (a bit fridge cold) but the selection was good. We really enjoyed our meal. It was pricey, but unlike most of our meals out recently, we felt it was value for money. We enjoyed the food, service was good but not intrusive, and the ambiance was quiet and calm, it we went early - suspect it will be more lively later on.

Les Associes was a favourite restaurant of ours (along with Florians and Le Cadre) when we moved into the Crouch End area just over 30 years ago. I'm afraid as new competition opened up (particularly Bistro Aix and Melange) we rather neglected the place, but this week returned for the first time in ages. It's remarkable how little has changed, from the decor to the style of cooking (heavy and traditional French cooking with rich sauces). Everything we selected from the charmingly hand-written menu was enjoyable. My filo pasty goat's cheese parcels were light and crispy on the outside and the shredded rabbit meat of my main course richly stewed with a slightly acidic (in a good way) sauce. The dessert menu was rather limited and predicable (tarte tatin, creme brulee, chocolate mousse) but my wife had some exceptional nougat ice-cream. We chose a fine and complex Pinot Noir to accompany the food - the sort of wine you won't find in a UK supermarket). To have kept the restaurant alive for so long is testament to the tenacity of the owners and they deserve our respect - and support.

A very pleasant evening for the four of us. The service was friendly and efficient and I should hope so with a only a half full restaurant and it ain't big. The food was pleasant enough but the seasoning was hit and miss. An over salty inedible fish soup to start was swiftly replaced by delicious queen scallops, what a different. The rabbit was over peppery but perfectly cooked, I think over reduced sauces are the cause of the seasoning issues. The potatoes dauphinoise included in the price of the mains was well cooked and seasoned and not too creamy. With pepper spice still lingering it was cleansed with a absolutely perfect crème brûlée, crunchy top and smooth body underneath. The wine list is short. The red Bordeaux was very nice. On the whole, there were a few blips but nothing to spoil a lovely evening. We spent £75 a head including service and two bottles of wine but only two desserts and we were happy to pay it.

This restaurant was such a great revelation to us.We have never been before and will certainly be back.A meal out for our Wedding Anniversary and we fancied French food somewhere new to us.The outside is very unpretentious and quite missable in a residential parade.Once through the door we thought we had landed in France,a traditional small local Gallic restaurant.Oozes with French charm. The decor belies the incredible food. A short menu but something for everyone. We both started with French onion soup, really seriously good, the bread basket was just so good and refilled! I had maigret of duck with a fig sauce, exquisite and cooked to perfection,I have never had a fig sauce like this and just the right balance of sweetness. My wife has sea bream in a garlic butter and lemon sauce, absolute heaven again the fish cooked perfectly.Vegatables come with the dish and not an extra. The dishes are very classical and quite rich but very well balanced.Icould manage a dessert, crepe brûlée,sublime. The wine list again is what you would expect in a typical French restaurant, prices very reasonable, by the glass, carafe or bottle. A very unhurried, relaxed meal. This is not an inexpensive restaurant but the food and atmosphere are just perfect,if this was in the West End the prices would be double. Our experience was absolutely worth it for the excellence of the food, good service and easier than travelling to France.

Enter this place and you're suddenly transported to a traditional restaurant in France. Genuine ingredients, seasonal and daily variations, twists of classic recipes (I've had snails prepared in at least 3 different ways). Good cheeses, good wines, an entertaining host who will greet and chat to guests exactly as you'd expect in any small restaurant in France, then serve the best veau you could dream of. The ambience is reminiscent of old cafes in Paris, and gives eating here part of its charm. I frankly don't understand the 1-star reviews. It sounds to me these people have entirely missed the point of "Les Associes". Yes, this is not your average London restaurant/cafe that serves standardised food in a surgically anonymous environment. Les Associes pretty much reproduces the traditional French experience. You go there to dive into it, feel its delicious flavours, and forgetting your hectic life outside. It's never too crowded, but never empty. It's not super new, but its slightly agé vibe is what really allows your brain to disconnect and unwind. I honestly hope they'll keep running for the next 50 years!

Les Associes is a genuine traditional French bistro with no fripperies and no trendy fuss. The menu is short and full of delicious treats, the wine list is also short but has some very nice choices. Everything is reasonably priced. The chef-patron cooks it all for you. The big plus is that it retains the ambience of a typical family-run Montmatre brasserie of the '70s or '80s before the ghastly wide boys and the chains messed everything up. The only downside is the rather unexciting vegetarian option (but of course this is just what one might expect from many a Parisian bistro!!) The second big plus is no background music so patrons can not only enjoy a good meal but also have a conversation without having to yell over the sound system. Go and enjoy this rare gastronomic survival tucked away off the beaten track in a residential street in Crouch End. I recently had a big party here and everyone thought Les Associes a restaurant to be treasured.

I have always wanted to visit this place, as it gets such a good rep but how disappointing. The restaurant is shabby and the service was rushed, then the owner tried to overcharge us by £20, so be careful when in larger groups, always check your bill. As for the food it was tasty but a bit on the salty side on the plus side the Salmon starter was plentiful and delicious. Not a great experience and a bit of a let down, so for that reason we won't be returning...

We decided on a whim to go back to Les Associes on a Sunday for lunch after many years away. It was charming and just the same in many ways. There is no doubt about its authenticity and as someone who lives in France 4 nights of the week out of 7 it is unmistakably French. The trouble is, and I've come to this opinion over the least few years of living over there, traditional French food like that served in this sweet little restaurant is just not that great any more. Its stuck in a time warp and has no signs of moving forward. Les Associes menu was perfectly acceptable, very French and - well a bit dull as a result. The starters we had, fish soup and paté de maison were very good and the steak I had in peppercorn sauce was OK - but tough as old boots- although my partners lamb dish was excellent and abundant! The pudding was, well foams of different flavours... not overly inspiring. Give it a go by all means - it is good value, the staff are pleasant enough, even though the place could do with a bit of a spruce up and the menu could do with an overhaul.

Had an absolutely brilliant meal to celebrate my mum's 90th birthday. Food was amazing and the Belgian White Cake was as good as ever. A massive thank you for giving us a wonderful evening. Meant to add that they do a fantastic gluten free menu too!

Visited in early March for a Sunday lunch party, and Les Associes contributed massively to our special occasion. Atmosphere, service, food and value all top notch and enjoyed by all.

Good coffee, average quiche served only cold (!). Whole place in a mess. Dirty tables and floors. Full of screaming spoilt kids. Not recommended.
