Over half the dishes ordered never arrived despite repeated requests and reminders. They said we hadn't ordered any more items, so we gave up and decided to get the bill and leave. The missing items had miraculously found their way on to our bill however, although they were removed on request. I removed the 'optional' service which they were very unhappy about. The dim sums we had were uninspiring and flavourless, the rest of the food never appeared so I can only imagine what that was like.

Given the choice on the main street we could have done better with hindsight. We waited ages for basic dishes - boiled rice, dumplings and crispy duck so hardly out of the ordinary. Not bad when it arrived but the service was ambivalent at best. Won't rush back.

As the branch in Lisle St has now closed, these new premises (just parallel to Lisle St, their old location) continues to provide very good fare and they put great emphasis on dim sum. The choice is good and the various prawn and pork options are particularly tasty. Service is courteous and very efficient, and prices are very reasonable for the West End. The ambiance at lunch was extremely pleasant, easy to get a table too. (Other reviews have commented on long queues to be seated - presumably in the evening?).

Buono a sapersi).

A party of 8 wandering around Gerrard Street at lunch-time as our favourite Chinese Restaurant was found to be boarded up. The menu posted outside was interesting and varied, and they said they could take us.The seating was smallish, hard, wooden stools, which wasn’t a problem initially but became uncomfortable later. The Menu sheets were about A2 size, double-sided, and they offer plenty of dishes in each of several food styles so it was a bit of a problem to navigate. We asked for a round of drinks and crispy duck pancakes to be getting on with while we struggled to choose our “mains”. We usually go for set meals on these reunions but this day we didn’t know the restaurant so each ordered separately. There were extensive choices in each genre, including Sushi, which appears to be one of their specialities. There is even a section of Hawaiian inspired seafood dishes, although my initial choice of scallops in tempura topped with tobiko and ikura was not available on the day. A couple of us did have seafood, one being a salmon dish which was a take on a prawn cocktail, the salmon resting on a bed of several things.Others mostly ordered chicken or meat dishes, some with noodles, others with plain or more “special” rice. The first food took ages to arrive and it was only two dishes. There was a longish wait before another two dishes arrived. More delay before the third pair arrived then another long wait, not nly for the last two dishes but also for one of the side dishes from an earlier incomplete delivery. The dishes looked good but were mostly not as expected so, on the plus side they were not stereotypical. However, a large proportion of the dishes had too many toasted chillies. I’d eventually ordered tempura-battered chicken in beer. It came as a large bowl of clear soy-coloured thin soup with selected sliced vegetables etc in it, which I found tasty, but while most of the chillies were cooked to mildness one or two were savage and out of character to the rest of the dish. It’s chicken component was a mixture of bite-sized pieces of meat with a selection of pieces of skin, which some people might not like. There were a few grumbles amongst our party but I suspect that was to do with the dishes being presented other than as expected rather than anything to do with their quality or quantity. The real down sides were the seating – uncomfortable after the first hour – and the seemingly interminable wait for the food which eventually appeared in dribs and drabs.A shame, because the menu is wide-ranging and inherently very tempting. They do also offer about 25 steamed and 8 grilled/fried “dim sum”, and about 8 congee /cheung fun dishes – ordering such dishes in succession might not be so badly affected by the speed of the kitchen. (We didn't have enough time for a dessert.)

Wanted an authentic Chinatown cuisine experience. With so many to choose from we opted for Leongs Legend. Food was genuinely not bad with a fresh feel and flavoursome. Not your bog-standard Chinese takeaway.HOWEVER... we did not feel welcome at all from any of the staff. After having starters we waited for our mains for 40 minutes before having to enquire about them. Only to find they had not been placed by the waiter who took our order. Being a very understanding couple we know mistakes can happen. Unfortunately no apology was made for this error nor did any staff attempt to compensate for our 1 hour wait in total for our mains. Throughout the meal we were not asked if we were ok. Waiters essentially threw the food at us and we left feeling fairly dissatisfied. A good culinary establishment ruined by the lack of etiquette.

Just like what other reviewers had mentioned before, we are in the queue for about 15 minutes before we got a table. Meanwhile there was an empty table (for 6) but dinners in front of us had to wait out as well. We were given a table in the basement and the waiter who served us was a bit "cold" and, yes no smile! Surprisingly the dishes we ordered turned out to be not too bad. We had the 4-season beans with minced pork, Shiao Loong Pau, noodles and chilli sauce wonton. One important point to the first timers coming to this restaurant, before we were given a table at the door, we were told they only took cash-NO cards! Like most Chinese restaurants which work on turnover of dinners, you practically have to eat and go and not a place for quiet and SLOW meal.

There are two locations for this restaurant. Both in Chinatown. I can see why due to the popularity of the restaurant and how many people were waiting to dine there. The downside of that is the food comes out really fast and it is not a place to be sociable. However, once the food came, all three people in my party literally inhaled the food because it was so good. The three cup chicken is the most praised dish, and should be a must try. It was fantastic. However, we had four entrees and two appetizers and there was not a drop left. Please note, this is an authentic restaurant and the preparation of the food is authentic. I know there are people who get weird in situations like this, so please note that. However, anyone looking for a good Asian meal that is authentic as can be, looks for the big wooden door, knock, and try to breathe when the food comes as it is so good you want to eat it as fast as you can!

Preferring to retain an air of mystery, Leong's Legend, on Macclesfield Street in the heart of China Town, London requires you to knock on their large, locked, wooden door and wait to be let in. Which is funny considering you can already see people enjoying their food in the restaurant.Service is typically Chinese, abrupt and relatively quick. The food more than makes up for the service; their steamed bock choi in sauce is just like you get in China and their steamed, or fried dumplings are just amazing! You can also, if you're into it, get Bubble Tea - hot or cold.

Off the main street of chinatown, you have to knock to be let in. Usually not too busy, service isn't very fast or very friendly but that seems common in chinatown. The star dishes are the xiao long bao and the braised pork rice, the rest of the food is quite average.

Leong's legends famously requires you toKnock and won't seat you until all your party is there. This creates a sense of anticipation the food doesn't quite deliver on. It's a nice room to eat in, busy and unceremonious and buzzy. Overall the service was fine and the food good but mostly missing elements like spice or complexity that would make it great. The soup dumplings and Taiwanese pork bun were the best things we ate. Kung pao chicken had tough meat and lacked punch. Good value for money and main dishes are huge and built for sharing.

Yes, I realise previous reviews have gone on about the bad service. Still, I'm going to do the same.My friend was keen to go to this restaurant, having enjoyed the food there before. It started badly, though, when we had to knock on the door to gain entry. Maybe they were trying to keep the place warm on a cold day, but it created the impression that they were letting us in as a favour! We had to ask for menus, and then ask for someone to take our order - this despite there being about four serving staff catering for only a few occupied tables. The food came in dribs and drabs, so I had my meal about five minutes before my friend. Afterwards, we requested the dessert menu. The waiter went off to get a menu, picked one up, changed his mind and came back to say "desserts have finished. All gone" ... this at about 7pm!Next, the bill ... it came all in Chinese, four items listed and a big space next to s/c. I asked for the bill in English and it came with our six items listed, though the total was the same, and correct. However, the service charge of 10% had already been added in. We assumed the Chinese version was an attempt to get us to pay yet another service charge for the practically non-existant service. The food was ok ... my Kung Pao Chicken was tasty, and my friend enjoyed the vegetarian aubergine dish (I tried it and found it slimy and tasteless). The plum wine was awful, though I was given a lot of it!Finally, we had to let ourselves out, as the staff ignored our exit.Never again!

If you are after a perfect service with attentive staff, then don't go there. As other reviewers have highlighted, the service is not the strongest point of this place. But, then again, I think this is a well-known fact by now, so try to research the reviews before going there. The food, however, is another matter altogether. It may not be a true Taiwanese experience, but an interesting one it is. There may be some hits and misses with the dishes, especially if you don't visit often to get used to the menu, and probably the kitchen staff may vary as well, but if you go there to try to experience something new, it may be worth your while. If comfort and predictability is your thing, then this may not be the right place. If you wish to go off the beaten track food-wise, you may just about have an unforgettable experience. Just about.

Visited with a friend for an early dinner, after having had the food recommended from a few people. We both had the Taiwanese pork buns (which were a little disappointing to be honest, rather dry with more fat than meat and lots of very dry powdered peanut that made the whole thing a little overpowering of that flavour and not much else!)However, my spicy beef noodle soup was delicious and very filling - extremely generous portion, could easily have fed two! My friend's mince pork special soup was also delicious, although slightly smaller in size. However, the service we encountered was pretty dire to be honest - not due to rudeness, but rather to incompetency. I eat in Chinatown pretty regularly so I know what to expect: pretty swift and uncommunicative service, efficient but probably not with a big smile or anyone checking you're enjoying your meal. And that's fine, and pretty much what I expect. However, here we had several issues which seemed to be due to the fact our server didn't understand what we were communicating! When ordering, I had to repeat my request twice, before just resorting to pointing at the dish on the menu. I also ordered bubble tea (choice of hot or cold on the menu) and specified cold, to which I received a glass hot tea with a few pieces of ice in it (not really a very pleasant beverage and definitely not worth £4, don't bother!) I also asked what kind of noodles were in the soup (whether they were thick noodles or thin vermicelli, just out of interest) to which our server said she didn't know. Never mind, as I wanted the dish regardless, but it would be nice for the staff to know a bit more about the dishes being served! Also, my friend ordered one main dish of noodle soup, before changing her mind and deciding on a different noodle soup, which she apologised to the server for, and explained she'd like to change her original order to this other soup. However, when our food arrived, we were brought three main dishes of soup to the table, as it transpires our server didn't understand that she had wanted to change the order - despite my friend having explained this very clearly! I'm sorry, but why would a party of two people want three large main orders - of soup?! It's not like that's a dish that's suitable for sharing!! Luckily we weren't charged for it, but it still surprised me that our server hadn't been able to understand the desire to change an order. Finally, when we asked for the bill, we had to spend about five minutes explaining how we wanted to split it and which dishes we each had ordered - which involved a lot of blank stares from the staff, and eventually us just having to type in the specific number to card machine ourselves. On the whole, the inability of our service staff to understand our communication of our order made the whole experience somewhat bizarre and rather unpleasant. I never really mind not receiving 5-star service, but when the simplest requests aren't able to be communicated I really do think you need to reassess your front-of-house staff priorities.Probably would return for the food, but make sure not to ask any questions or make any form of request!

FYI it's the best place to eat dumplings in Chinatown. You have to knock the door to get in. Expect to wait 10 - 20 minutes for them to answer when it's busy and don't expect to be greeted with a smile either. But, It's all part of the ambiance! Getting in and stuck into their steamed dumplings and spicy wantons is well worth the wait! Go and try the place it's not expensive and better then anything near it. Highly recommend!

The wife and I were really looking forward to have a taste of home. The chef was supposed to be from DingTaiFung and the fact that it had two stores in Chinatown gave us the sense that this was going to be where we will be coming to whenever we miss home. Sadly, the experience we had there was terrible and we wont be going back there again. We ordered vegetarian dumplings, vegetarian fried turnip and half a fried salt and pepper spring chicken. The vegetarian dumpling skin was dry, with dried flour bits on it and the fillings one mushy mess. The fried turnip while it was at least looking presentable on the outside, was also a wet mushy mess inside. The fried chicken was dry and tasteless that the wife stop eating after 2 pieces. Did i also mentioned that the service was really rude and unfriendly? How can you call yourself a Taiwanese restaurant when you cannot even ensure customers experience the hospitality we are proud of? Shame shame!! For Dim Sum, I would recommend going to Royal China or Phoenix Palace at Baker Street.

The food in Leong's Legends is not superb fantastic but definitely above average. Restaurant is relatively small. Hence, you have to knock on the door before you are allowed into the restaurant depending on availability. Unfortunately, during my visit, i do not feel welcoming at all. I knocked the door as per request, was told by a waiter (with an unfriendly face - totally no smile) that restaurant is full and we need to wait for 10 minutes outside, under a minus degree weather. Fine! The food must be good since there are several people waiting. 20 minutes later, still no seat available but hey! We can see clearly from the window, there is an empty table but why are they not giving to us! Reason being that the table are meant for bigger group, 4 and above. Both my husband and i together with the couple in front are willing to make up 4 paxs for that table! They said no and insisted that customers are already paying their bill and tables will be available soon. Rigid minded! We managed to get in only after a good 30 minutes standing under the cold. We ordered fried rice, spinach (but turned out to be kangkong) and chilli shrimp dumplings to satisfy our craving for chinese food after 6 days in Iceland. However, for that kind of unwelcoming service, even if food is good, we are definitely not coming back. Surely, there are better chinese restaurants around in London.

Conclusion une découverte, dépaysement et bonne cuisine.

We happened to be there during Chinese new year. It was the fourth visit. The food quality has been kept very well. A bit lack of serving staff, yet with good attention. Very tasty small plates, somewhat well done mains. We find it one of the best in Chinatown nowadays among those cheaper cheapest fuchow mainlanders.

Went with friends recently. Menu looked great, however when I explained that I needed g/free the only dishes that were pointed out to me that I could seemingly order were the egg fried rice, vegetables (seemingly with a range of sauces) or noodles with veg. After double checking I really couldn't order any other dish (even those that used rice noodles etc), I ordered some vegetables with garlic and the noodles. I got plain veg, and plain glass noodles which had fairly greasy stir-fried veg in it. It was so so bad. The only plus is that they double checked about the g/f but that's about it. To be honest it just seems they couldn't be bothered to do anything else to cater for g/f, but then again this place is all about the turn over so maybe it would take too much time to make sure of g/f food. Otherwise, my friends seemed to have had good food which they enjoyed. So the restaurant gets 1 star for knowing about g/f , as I can't mark for my friends' food. Won't be coming back because of the poor g/f food options and would recommend anyone who has gluten intolerance / coeliac not to go here.

Having visited here on a Friday night I must admit the queue at the door on which you had to knock was quite a novelty and gave the impression this place must be "the" place to eat in China town.Average food in my opinion. All the raving regarding dim sum....there is only 2 or 3 options and the Xiaolong pao was watery and if I'm honest both my friend and I were I'll the next day. I had the seafood noodles I've had better at my local takeaway. Not often would I wrote a bad review and each to their own but I'm being honest this place was definitely overrated.

My friend introduced me to Leong's Legend a few years ago and it quickly became my only restaurant of choice in China Town. Firstly - you have to knock to enter! Once you're inside, you should order their Xiao Long Bao - it's what they're known for and it does not disappoint! Also, their duck pancakes and pork belly are delicious. All reasonably priced for a lovely meal. They also have a deal that if you pay with cash Mon-Thur, you can get 20% off your food.

Went in for lunch. We ordered the dim sum pork and shrimp dumplings filled with soup, fried turnip dim sum, sweet and sour pork ribs and a sweet potato cognee. The sweet and sour pork ribs were a bit hard to eat since it's not spare ribs form but rather bony meat bits. It was just ok but nothing special. The turnip dim sum was original and nice. The cognee was just weird and tasteless. The highlight was the pork and shrimp dim sum. Which was very good. Be sure to try it.Overall 7/10.

As many reviewers before have mentioned, Leong's was given a glowing review by Jay Rayner some time ago, and anywhere that's good enough for him is good enough for me. I was craving dim sum but the few 'trolley' options left in Chinatown seem to stop serving at 5pm so I somehow remembered Rayner's review about very special dumplings here. This was a quick pre theatre dinner. We had the famous xiao long bao and they really are as good as everyone says, so much so that we got through 3 portions between 2 people. The steamed buns didn't get a rave review from my friend (I'm not a fan of them anyway so not a good judge). Crispy duck was fine, slightly on the dry side, and wontons were lovely although not as spicy as advertised. Service was hit and miss. I wasn't expecting much but it was broadly efficient, quick and with an odd smile. The low point and high point came when our waiter abandoned shredding or crispy duck to have an argument with a man at a neighboring table who had eaten his meal and then claimed that he didn't have any money to pay for it. It was rude of her but also rather entertaining, and not as rude as the patron for eating with no funds. I wish we'd been able to stay to see the end of their debate, it may have been more entertaining than the theatre. I would definitely go back for more dumplings and to try a wider selection. Beware though hat the bill can spiral fairly quickly, although maybe that's just because my friend and I have eyes bigger than our xiao long baos.

oth times I have visited I have been very impressed with the restaurant’s Taiwanese cuisine, and not just because I’ve had a bit to drink. On both occasions I have had the steamed vegetable dumplings which are absolutely delicious, and also come as a very generous portion. This time I followed the dumplings with Ma-Po tofu and egg-fried rice. The tofu was good and full of flavour, which can sometimes be an issue. There are a fair number of veggie options on the menu too, which are all clearly marked, making it nice and easy to find something to eat. It’s also worth mentioning that, in my experience, Leong’s Legend is a bit cheaper than some of the surrounding Chinatown restaurants. This, combined with the efficiency of the staff and the good food, makes it a great spot to grab a quick bite.

We fancied a bit of duck and a pork bun, and, having recalled and reread a glowing (and, as ever, brilliantly written) Jay Rayner review about Leong's Legends, figured this would be the place to sate our craving. We were right: both the duck (with pancakes etc) and the buns were lovely. We also tried the xiao long bao (praised in the aforementioned review) and salt and pepper chicken, and these dishes were both delicious, too.We were seated immediately, and service was mostly efficient, if not effervescently friendly; this was fine, though, and certainly no reason to avoid the place, so, going by others' experiences, we must've been comparatively lucky!I think there might be better duck available in Chinatown/London, and, to be honest, if I want buns again, I might go to Duck and Bao on Tisbury Court or Flesh and Buns, both of which were closed today, but Leong's Legends is certainly worth a visit.

I finally paid my first visit to the well known Leong's Legend last month with a friend and it was simultaneously really good and not so good. Most of the dishes we tried were a bit so-so and I can't even recall what we ate other than open bun dinsum which was fairly average. However, I'd heard the chilli garlic (whole) crab was good and it was delicious! So tasty we ended up licking the claws clean just to enjoy a bit more of that deep friend garlicy goodness. For that crab alone I will definitely be back and hopefully other parts of the menu can live up to it next time.Other than that, the decor is quite stylish compared with most restaurants in the area, but the service was terrible (as others have said in their reviews). But hey, this is Chinatown, what do you expect? Every restaurant has terrible service there. Maybe one day a Chinatown restaurant will twig that they could get a significant competitive advantage if they actually combined good food with good service... one day...

The slightly secretive access (knock on the door) is a quirk of the place. It is crowded and the place is always packed. Seats are not that comfortable but the food is top of the range. Service pretty average and not particularly friendly but the ambience and seating is not bad inside. More modern-ish with benches.Milk tea was average and no where as good as milk tea in Taiwan. Ordered the "basil fried chicken" as well, which was not good. Spicey dumplings was average as well. My main was good though, which was a spicy glass noodle (sorry don't know English name).

I went for a quick lunch with my brother there. Long after seated down and had discussed what to order, no staff attended our table. I raised my hand to one of the waiter to get noticed, I think he saw me but he did not communicate back and instead carrying on do what he was doing. Second time tried to get his awareness but still had to wait a little to be served. The food came out reasonably quick but the order in which they were served was quite unsatisfying. First came the rice, then half way through the rice there was the oyster omelette, half way through that last came the soup dumpling. The omelette was tasty bursting with flavours from the oyster and vegetable, however the sticky rice cooked in bamboo and the soup dumplings were mediocre, there was not much presence of soup inside the dumpling and Left me wonder how they could make this famous dish so unmemorable. Throughout the lunch there was not much service apart from having the food brought to the table and take payment. No staff come to serve in between or ask if everything is ok. All the staffs seemed inept at smiling, grumpy as they are leaving me thinking why did I choosing to eat here. It is a joke to pay 10% service charge on this kind of service, ridiculous when I asked if I can takeaway the unfinished food I was left to pack the food myself! I would of rated this restaurant with 3 stars if the staff were more attentive and friendlier.

Had Chicken with cashew nuts and chilli's and peppers with Steamed Rice and had a side dish off Pork and Crabmeat Steamed Dumplings. It was served quickly and was presented well and was very tasty if not a little to spicy with the chillies. Plenty of flavour that packed a punch all washed down with Chinese Tea. We went there for lunch and upon seeing the lunch special offer of 8 dim sum dumplings for £4,50 between 12-5 pm we ordered 2 portions and a spicy beef soup which costs £9,50. So in the end of the meal i was expecting to pay £18,50 plus service charge. Well the bill came to £28,10, thinking it was a mistake we asked the waitress, but she said no the sign outside is for 4 dumplings and not 8 so they charge us double- £8. Sorry but my math is not wrong when the price listed is £4,50 which means £9 and not £8. Actually she didn't charge us the lunch price, she charged the dinner one whcih is £8. She was adamant this was the correct and she was having none of it, so we had to just pay the bill overcharged by £7 plus service charge. As you can see from the picture the price was pretty clear, they just take advantage of customers, shame because the food is really good. Unfortunately i won't be returning to this place..

I would have given this place a 0-star rating, if I was allowed to do so by Trip Advisor. I have contributed hundreds of reviews on this site and this restaurant is BY FAR THE VERY WORST. (1) I lived in Taiwan for several years, so I know that the food served here is DEFINITELY NOT Taiwaneses. It is like trying to convince people that Chinese chicken fried noodles are authentic Italian pasta dishes, which are clearly NOT the same. (2) The staff were RUDE. On the window, it says that the restaurant serves a special lunch menu, so I asked for it. The waitress, however, denied that such a menu actually existed. About half an hour later, the empty table next to ours was occupied by 3 people and were given that special lunch menu. I then asked the waitress again why she did not give me that menu. She then replied, I quote, "I forgot, so what, do you have any problems?". (3) When we asked for our bill, the numbers were seriously inflated. We asked for the menu again to work out the "precise" number plus the "service charge". It was confirmed that the "real" cost of our lunch was only £35.69, however the bill presented (with only the dishes you ordered, but without the prices) was asking for £43.00 exactly! It was like the staff were charging diners whichever number that takes their fancy! When we confronted the staff, they gave us the ugliest possible look one could imagine and offered absolutely NO apologies or explanations whatsoever! (4) This place's decoration is trying to imitate small inns in ancient China, thus dark and very much wood-based. This gives the staff the perfect excuse NOT to clean the tables, the chairs and the restaurant! Watch out for the hygiene issues! Overall, a new word has to be invented to describe our simply horrible experience. We will never return again and urge diners in the strongest possible terms to avoid this place.

Despite the fact you have to queue outside and a staff not overly friendly, we loved the simplicity of the restaurant, authentic with its wooden table, a simple cosy and warm atmosphere which reminds me of my travels in Asia.Unfortunately, last Friday, we have been really disappointed, the food wasn't as good as usual and it appears that we had a food poisoning. The Red Cooked Beef was broiled tough cow, & the Ginger Duck was dry & tough like cardboard & the appearance resembled black charcoal. The wooden tables were dirty & not wiped down, floor was sticky & the trip to the washroom was disgusting - put us iff from eating! This was a great disappointment to our visit in London's Chinatown. With so much competition, we are surprised this place still survives. Our big mistake in not checking out via TripAdviser before we visited. Also, check your bill before you pay. Disappointment is the only word that comes to my mind after tasted the food. This restaurant claims to serve Taiwanese food, but the flavour and finished products are from authentic. I am judging it based on from my recent trip to Taiwan.I was at this restaurant back in 2009, and the moment I walked in, memories flooded back. Unfortunately, this looks more dumpy that my previous visit. The braised pork was tender, and I gave it a good credit. The 3-cup squid did not taste like the famous standard recipe, Cooke with chicken. The squids virtually swam in a pool of sauce / gravy.Disaster struck - the presence of the third dish, the Ginger Duck cooked with Sake. I could not taste the Sake, but presence of just a touch of alcohol. The duck meat was touch, really, really tough. It was good for roughage but nothing else.I found out that from a waiter that the chef / cook was from Malaysia, not Taiwan. I expressed strongly about my disappointment of the poor quality.

I told them in a very discreet and polite way that it wasn't great and paid for it apart from the dish i sent back. My verdict - They either need to change the cook + the waitresses or this restaurant needs to be shut down.
