Leaf & Bean in Edinburgh, City of

Staff are so lovely and pleasant but it is just so expensive! I would struggle to afford such steep prices when I could go elsewhere and pay less for same quality . It’s a shame .

Breakfast sausage roll and coffee. All excellent with morning fresh bread rolls and square sausage. is that a Scottish thing? Sat outside and watched the world go by. Friendly service and away from the madding fringe crowd. Lovely

Sadly it wasn’t an ideal place for lunch ! The staff although very polite were not very attentive when we came in for a table or when we had sat waiting for our order to be taken. Had to go to small counter and wait until asked if they could help, even though we were sat waiting already. Then table we sat at firstly had mould around the edges at windows and bugs galore so we moved to another place that wasn’t cleaned from previous customers so we had to clean ourselves. Once our order placed and table cleaned the food and drinks came quickly but slightly concerned under cooked meat on the hot rolls and VERY over priced for what we ordered ! Also, forgot to add plenty odd looking bugs landing on our plates and tables etc when sat down which when inside shouldn’t be the case ! Safe to say we wouldn’t return and sadly wouldn’t recommend to anyone unless issued addressed ….

The staff was super friendly, helpful and welcoming. And the vegetarian sandwiches were to die for! They were super flavorful snd delicious!!

Service really poor. Took a seat and no one came to serve us. Eventually went up and was told I had to order at a side counter. Coffee came with no sugar. Upon asking for it I was directed to a shelve to collect my own. Very off hand approach. Clearly the waiter wasn't going to bring it. Essentially no service at all, but coffee very expensive. I live locally but won't be back.

This coffee shop is lovely and with lovely surroundings. However I think the coffee etc is the most expensive in the whole of Edinburgh. Until prices are sorted out, will not be returning.

Soooo expensive! Popped in for a quick toastie and a coffee for two. £31.90!!! Ok, we shared a flapjack too, but how on earth does it come to this cost. Interesting how the prices are not listed for coffees as it would have scared me off to Greggs!

This is a cosy cafe with friendly staff which is why I am giving this a poor as opposed to terrible review status. A panini (with pesto, tomato and mozzarella) served with salad and crisps was £9 and it was nothing to write home about. I bought a tea and raw choc nut balls which brought the total up to £15 which I felt very expensive.

Be warned! You don't get a bit of tablet with your coffee any more. £12 for two coffees and a small bit of cake seemed excessive.

We popped in for a late lunch and coffee. It's such a lovely, cosey cafe and bonus being dog friendly too! The menu was mostly soup and sandwich/panini/ciabatta with pastries and cakes. Caters for vegan too. We all had ciabattas, coffees, frappucinos and some cake. It's pricey but where isn't with rising costs. It was tasty food, good coffee, good service and I'd rather support a smaller business like this. Will definitely be back!

This little neighborhood café is a real delight! Very professional and humorous service in a place which is truly nicely designed with natural furniture. The food is freshly made, coffee ans other drinks taste superb and the rates are fair. It is south of the touristy center of Edinburgh, but we were staying around the corner, so for us it was really convenient. The surrounding area is quiet and green, we really enjoyed our little pause here. Will be back for sure!! Both thumbs up!

OK coffee and snack but far too overpriced. Last visit was during Edinburgh Festival weeks, and it seemed that they were trying to get away with London or NewYork prices. I won't return.

I went in for what I was hoping would be a fairly swift lunchtime panini and a cup of tea. Having placed my order, paid and sat down, I was a little surprised to be still waiting for my order over 20 minutes later. I enquired at the counter and it became clear that they had completely forgotten my order! Not too great. I think they need to sharpen up their act particularly as it is relatively expensive compared with other Morningside cafes.

I pop in with my baby most mornings and am always greeted with a smile and some chat from the staff. The coffee is amazing, and the bacon rolls are the best I’ve had from anywhere in Morningside. Really recommend if you’re in the area :)

The staff are so rude and unwelcoming. Felt really pressured into ordering more when my I still had coffee in my cup. Will never visit again.

To be fair, I had been warned. However, we were walking by it with friends and decided to give it a shot. With an open mind. Alas, NO. Hard to find something nice to say. Coffee, bad. Service, slow. Food, blah. Only OK feature, the setting.

For what they offer, I believe many other places can provide a range of delicious foods and drinks for a lower price, whereas the hygiene of this cafe is up to standard as well as this cafe being quite aesthetically pleasing to visit if out and about. However, I wouldn't go to this specific cafe again due to other reviews I have seen on this site as well as those I viewed on multiple other platforms.

I think it’s absolutely disgusting that one person can make a video about a negative experience and all their followers jump on the bandwagon and decide that they need to leave a negative review. This is somebodies business, this is their livelihood, this business pays their bills. This wannabe influencer clearly sat nursing a pot of tea for longer than necessary and didn’t like being asked to purchase another drink if they wished to stay. It’s common courtesy that you don’t take up a table for a prolonged period of time if you’re not eating/drinking, however she’s clearly been raised to have zero manners or respect. Having visited this cafe multiple times I can hand on heart say that I have never had a bad experience here. The staff have always been lovely and polite and the coffee is excellent. I have visited with friends and family on separate occasions and each visit the staff have been wonderful. Please don’t look at the reviews and let them put you off visiting.

Have visited the Morningside cafe a few times with my one year old daughter, and have always had a lovely time. Very friendly service, a fab play area for kids, and delicious hot chocolates!

Popped into the Leaf & Bean by the Meadows for some lunch and a coffee - genuinely shocked that two coffees and two pieces of quiche, with a handful of limp undressed salad leaves and some crisps, came to £19. And served on paper plates...

great flat white but at £3.10 vs £2.25 in the cafe nearby, it really is a rip-off, and yes the other cafe's flat white is also great. The large space means it is suitable for mums and buggies, but the constant smell of frying bacon...

This is our local coffee shop and we visit it quite often. Great friendly staff, lovely and cosy surroundings. Food is wonderful. Would also recommend the hot chocolate. Divine!!

What a wonderful cosy and delightful place to have a coffee.i went here with my grandma and we really enjoyed the service and just how relaxed n friendly the staff were. It's a fabulous simple and wonderful place to grab some fresh homemade treats.

Visité este café ayer para almorzar con un cliente. ¡Ambos tuvimos la sopa, él lentejas y yo la sopa de pollo roja tailandesa que gana el premio a la mejor sopa que he comido en mucho tiempo! Sabroso y no demasiado picante, vino con 2 rebanadas de pan delicioso y mucha mantequilla. El personal muy amable y el gerente / propietario fue especialmente amable con el perro que teníamos con nosotros. Buena relación calidad-precio con un ambiente agradable y relajado. I had a large bowl of delicious chicken laksa soup here. A very filling lunch. The coffee was top notch too.

Nice little local cafe. Service was good, if not quick!! food was good, (I had a very tasty toastie ) but expensive at £7.50! To be fair it was accompanied by a portion of tasty salad and some potato crisps!! So if you want a toastie with all the trimmings it may be good value! Noisy when I visited as the little back room crèche was full!!

Nice friendly neighbourhood cafe which serves great food and drink. Popular for breakfast/brunch at weekends. Need to try the pancake stacks which leave you not needing to eat for a week !

Paramos aquí, después de regresar de Blackford Hill y lamentamos tener que irnos. Obviamente, un barrio favorito. Estupenda ubicación para caminar Morningside o en autobús al centro de la ciudad.

We had club sandwiches which were delicious and definitely too big to bite into...this is a good thing. Good selection of drinks. All in all a very enjoyable visit.

After a hectic shopping spree in Morningside or just to have a chat with friends ...out of all the cafes inthis Aird it is the best! ,Friends were here from New Zealand ,Canada ,HongKong and USA and all vote it yummy and friendly!!

Conseguimos un período tranquilo en la cafetería, que explica por qué los tres chicas parecía agotado y bastante lento para conseguir nuestro fin. Sin embargo, éste era excelente sopa de lentejas y rebanadas de pan. También tuvimos excelentes tartas añadieron a nuestras bebidas. El mobiliario es pintoresco, con varias mesas que había sido enormes máquinas de coser. Volveré pero no esperes un servicio rápido.

Chose this cafe because it had a play area. It was so disappointing- awkward back room, filthy floor mats and a handful of tatty dirty toys. Really wouldn’t take much to replace the floor mats and update the toys, you can pick second hand toys up in any charity shop. Plus side the staff and food were nice.

Visited here when out for a walk in Morningside. The three of us all commented on the quality of the coffee and it is clear that they know their stuff here, and are very enthusiastic about producing a first rate product. The rocky road tray bake was delicious as well so all in all 3 very satisfied folk!! Pleasant surroundings and very relaxing. Well worth another visit in the future.

I know of no other cafe or restaurant where I feel so much at home. The tea, coffee and chocolate are, of course, just right. The snacks and pastries, too, are just right. The atmosphere is quiet and family-friendly.

Other members of my family have been happily bringing my disabled father here for several years, but this was my first visit with him. Knowing he would like both ice-cream and a hot chocolate, I was disappointed his 1st two choices of the latter - off quite a list - were unavailable; also that the only flavour of ice-cream was plain vanilla. When my vegan nephew asked if there was something suitable for him, apart from black / herbal tea, there did not appear to be anything. However, my sister then noticed there were 'fruit bars', which the waitress was unaware would have been suitable. I realise that we were a relatively challenging clientele but have been left feeling disappointed.

Amazing place, GREAT staff, fantastic coffee and even a free bit of tablet....the toasties and everything are fresh on fantastic bread and nothing is too much trouble for Daniel and his team. There is no other option in the area worth going too. Good Job guys !!

After a busy morning we were desperate for a child friendly cafe for 6We got it at the Leaf and Bean....play area for children....comfy seats for adults ...service with many smiles and delicious food!!

Leaf and Bean is a great coffee shop in Morningside station. The owner was working when we went in and he was super friendly and helpful. When my husband ordered a mocha we didn't realize there could be so many options and he said it was one of the best mocha's he has had. I had a breakfast tea and it was delicious. They also offer great kid options which delighted our children.

Whilst out and about we spotted this place, and figured we'd grab some breakfast. It was a bit of a weird experience, really. My partner's scrambled eggs on toast were "okay" and my pancakes were lukewarm and plain (and tiny!), but tasted a bit of something I couldn't put my finger on, like they'd been cooked straight after something else? Then I spotted that the pancakes were pre-made, and came from a big plastic bag underneath the counter by the bin... The weird thing about Leaf & Bean though, was that about halfway through our food, a door at the back opened, and it was chock full of babies rolling about on the floor, with the odd parent going in and out. It got pretty noisy, but babies are noisy, so that's no big deal. Then, some bloke (I presume must have been a member of staff or the owner?) started going round the café grabbing tables and chairs, and putting them into the back room - presumably for more seating space once the parents left with their kids. Now, it's not like the café was lacking in space, but it just made the place look really sparse, and there weren't enough chairs for the tables.What I really didn't like was that he came to our table - when my partner was still halfway through her meal - and took one of the tables and two chairs away, and into the back room. Didn't wait until we'd finished and left, but halfway through eating. There was a mother with her child sitting at a table for one, and he then (without asking, or even acknowledging her presence) took the extra chairs from that table too, into the back room.The entire thing was really odd, so we paid (was far too expensive for what we got), mentioned it to the staff as not being a pleasant thing to do, and left.Never to return. The obliviousness of some people in the service industry astounds me.

This place is usually fine. Not on my last visit though. Arrived about 4.20, to be fair, this is towards the end of the day at 5pm. Could accept that grills were off, just, so no chicken club. Ordered two coffees and a juice. Staff more interested in reading their phones and cleaning down rather than making coffee so we left. Having worked years ago in the catering trade we would not have been allowed to do main clean down until business had closed to allow full service during opening hours. Very different than cleaning tables/basic kitchen clean. Poor

The coffee is good and the baked goods are delicious. The service is efficient and friendly and unpretentious. We were in at a quiet time and everything was satisfactory.

Coffee ,tea, cakes fine. Busy and friendly. It's just that there's a weird smell which clings to your clothes, even hours later you still have the odour on you. What on earth is it?

This in my view is the best cafe in Comiston and Morningside. It is quirky and clean. So dismiss some of the ridiculous reviews before. I'm here quite often and the team there are really friendly and the food is awesome. The coffee is also Barista made and a quality brew. Good Job Guys !!

Popped in here with a friend on a Thursday afternoon and was delighted by the service! Highly recommend this cafe! Owner is a great guy!

I'm not quite sure what is going on here, but on the occasions I had the misfortune to visit this place, the service was dreadful. It wasn't ever particularly busy and yet the staff seemed only interested in themselves rather than serving their customers. You feel more valued in Costa. Which is where I will be going in future...

Very slow service. All we asked for was a large coffee and an ice cream. We got a small coffee after about 15 minutes and an ice cream a long time after that. Staff ignored me when I asked the small/large coffee issue and when I asked if we could have the ice cream now rather than later. None of this really matters of course, it was only a coffee, but it would be nice if staff could just be a bit more pleasant or responsive. All in all, slow and surly sums it up. I won't be back.

Took my granddaughter of 22 months to the Sunday story telling. . Lovely atmosphere and nice crowd. Santa dropped in went round the tables and then each child went in for a chat and a present. Surprisingly well done for a cafe.The coffee, brunch and chat was lovely as well. There is a back room for children to play and room for buggies. Ideal cafe for mums or grannies to meet up for a coffee and chat! The owners have created a much needed niche in Morningside !Lovely baby and Christmas presents for sale too.....nice touch !Thank you for a lovely Sunday morning! Well done x

Staff are nice but food needs some work. The scrambled eggs we had for breakfast were microwaved and coffee isn't good compared to the local competition. Overall ok but wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again.

Disorganised and unhygienic. Food not good and took ages to come. Full of mothers and children and buggies which is nice for them but not so great for the rest of us.Appalled at the lack of hygiene especially with so many young children around.Weak coffee. Staff pleasant enough but a bit clueless. They have good intentions but need to up their game and become a lot more professional. It is a bit like eating at someone's house.

This eclectic shop has an incredible ambience and a great selection of stogies. The decor is conducive to light up and enjoy a smoke, with always an interesting bunch of guys.

Have seen good comment about the place and certainly the coffee was very good and up to my snobby standard. The breakfast sadly let it down. Both of our sets of poached eggs were overcooked. I mean the texture of a boiled egg on the inside. As we were hungry and in a rush I did not send them back. To be fair when paying I was asked if I enjoyed my food and I did feed this back and the staff were very friendly and said we should have let them know and would have sorted, so no complaint on the response to feedback. My issue is that whoever plated them up knew they where overcooked, it was very obvious, so in my view I shouldn't have been put in the position in the first place.

I adore this place! The milkshakes are amazing!! I have had the all day breakfast and chicken and caeser salad before. It was absolutely amazing. Although, I wouldn't get the salad as a healthy option! Very generous portion sizes!!

An absolutely lovely place to meet for a coffee, relax alone or take the kids ! Great cakes, and good range of drinks accompanied by a lovey barista who was polite and welcoming .

Family friendly coffee shop with a relaxed atmosphere and staff who greeted us with a smile. I didn't eat there but there was a good choice of food and what was being served to other customers looked delicious. Normally a tea drinker I fancied a change and had a hot chocolate and it certainly didn't disappoint. Highly recommend this to anyone visiting Morningside and I will definately pop in past here again soon.

I visited with my family on a busy Saturday afternoon, however, the service was prompt and our order arrived quickly and with a smile. The coffee is the best I've had in Morningside and my daughter swears by the carrot cake. I would definitely recommend. Thankyou.

We enjoyed a relaxed late breakfast here recently. Very pleasant young staff and plenty alternatives for a Sunday brunch. Proper leaf tea was a bonus. Will return!

It's a small cosy place with very friendly young staff. Perfect coffee. A refreshing alternative to the big coffee shop chains. If you feel like a no-fuss snack, like a scrambled egg on toast or a bacon roll, washed down with a nice latte, then this is unbeatable. They like kids, and they sell a bit of jewellry on the side.

I visited with my mum as we heard from friends it is a cozy family friendly place also she loves her cakes and coffee. Staff very friendly and welcoming, coffee just perfect and my mum just adored her delicious cake. I had breakfast and it was yummy. Loved the care of the staff who were looking after us. Amazing little cafe, which serves great coffee, classic or with different flavors. No matter what you decide on it is delicious and made with love. The cakes as well as the sandwiches/paninies are lovely and there is a great choice. The staff is friendly and welcoming, always making guests feel comfortable, even when it is busy. The atmosphere is bright and homely, not to much and not to little, just perfect. The price is very reasonable and fair. There is really nothing negative to say about Leaf&Bean! Defiantly one of my favorite coffee places in Edinburgh.

I was there this afternoon having a coffee. The coffee was good and cheap. The place was children friendly and with facilities to work. The menu was good.The bad points:My table was sticky, the previous customer dropped water or some liquid. The waitress came, saw that there were children books on my table, picked them up and apologised. But she did not clean or wiped down the table. At this point, I noticed that no one was wiping down tables after customer took a leave. Moreover, there was a few dirty high chairs. There were only three waitresses, no one was doing nothing, everyone was busy but they were not doing what they did not like, like cleaning. The toilet was not perfectly cleaned but if pay attention, it stinks slightly.On average, it was a good place but some improvement paying attention to the basics was needed.

Tardis-like, this café is far more impressive on the inside than it appears from the outside. It stretches quite a way back over two bright, airy rooms. Décor is plain but pleasant - no hipstery nonsense - more church hall luxe.There is a range of sandwiches and baked potatoes available, as well as an all-day breakfast and a large selection of teas, coffees and accompanying cakes.We had a breakfast and a panini, and shared a cake. All were tasty, especially the very smoky bacon, and served with a smile.A little more attention to detail in the presentation of food and cakes, and cafetières that didn't let grounds escape would make this place 5 stars. A nice addition to the café scene in the area, and we'll visit again.

Good value for money staff friendly cakes are great they have a substantial new menu. Nice location comfortable to sit in.
