Excellent eating experience with a fabulous menu. The staff were welcoming and friendly. Came here for an anniversary dinner, all the staff took note and welcomed us and wished us a happy anniversary. Food was divine, and the chocolate delice was exceptional, I highly recommend.

We had a great night at the Talbooth, the food was excellent, the best we have had in a long time. My husband had the crab and venison, I went for the vege option, the truffle pasta start and fig pudding was divine. The setting looks perfect on the pics, we were sat in a corner so did not see much of it. The service was good but not excellent, did I imagine the eye roll when I asked for the vegetarian menu? One waitress came over to ask why we were so quiet, we weren’t quiet just enjoying the food. We had a great night and I would go again, would be nice next time to be in a more characterful part of the building.

In the main it was a lovely dinner in a beautiful restaurant. The food was on the whole exceptional, with great service. For starters I had the Soy Glazed Breast of Quail and Crispy Leg, and my husband had the Seared Yellow Fin Tuna and Pink Grapefruit. For main, my husbands main was the Stuffed Loin of Rabbit and Red Wine Glazed Leg, and for desserts I had the Pistachio Mille-Feuille and my husband had the Cheese Board. All of these were delicious. However, my main was inedible. I had the Thyme Roasted Breast of Norfolk Chicken, with Parma Ham. There was a very off taste and when I smelt it, it smelt putrid. I spoke to the waitress who took it to the chef, who said the smell was the Parma ham and it was because it was aged. Apparently he had only just opened the packet and it was fine. I disagree. It was off and I have eaten aged Parma ham in Spain, Portugal and Italy and it had never tasted or smelt off. No alternative was offered, no discount or that item to be removed from the bill. It was - we are right, you are wrong. I certainly couldn’t eat it, and it spoilt what was otherwise a delicious meal. For the price though, my favourite restaurant in this area remains the House by Hilly Gant in Braintree, which is definitely a match for the good food at the Talbooth and is half the price.

Our evening was spoilt by slow service, small portions and terrible staff attitude. Management response to my concerns told me everything I needed to know about why I will never recommend or go back to this place. A delightful experience, in an absolutely stunning location with picturesque views of the River Stour that perfectly complement the ambiance of the restaurant. The setting made for a relaxed and elegant atmosphere (we had lunch but ideal for a special occasion as well!). The food was beautifully presented and of high quality. Each dish was well-crafted, with fresh ingredients but the reason we gave it a 4* as our main course meat dishes were overcooked, but the starters were great. The food was solid but not outstanding. The menu offers a good variety of options, with a separate Veggie/Vegan menu. The service was attentive and professional. Overall, Talbooth is a fantastic choice for anyone looking to enjoy fine dining in a serene and scenic location. Recommend it to anyone visiting Dedham or celebrating a special occasion.

I cannot remember if I have written a review for Le Talbooth before which is strange as we visit on a very regular basis and have done for many, many years!! We usually turn up with family or friends or just by ourselves (booked of course) and can say that we have never experienced anything but 'Simply the Best' The ambience, the food, the range of wines and cocktails etc (although it is always one cocktail for me (Black Russian) - love them) BUT the attention to detail from each and every member of the amazing staff team is nothing short of brilliant!! Is it a little expensive (detail from other reviews) perhaps a little - but if you check first then you will know what you are letting yourself in for!! An exceptional meal - served by an exceptional team - in an exceptional setting!!!!! Not naming any names - we have to say that the 'sisters' are superb, the tall slim lass (who has found her suit size - and you will know what I mean here) and of course the bar team together with the catering team - AND the most amazing sommelier - are admired by us both!!!! You can all be justifiably proud. Be afraid though as we are back again in September!!!!!

Le Talbooth retains certain strong positives. The quality of the food is good – particularly the desserts (my pistachio mille-feuille was beyond delicious). The setting, especially on a warm summer evening when the outdoor terrace is utilised is stunning. However, there are a few things that suggest that the restaurant relies a little too much on the fact that there are so few decent restaurants in the area. For example, the delicious bread that is a nice touch while you wait for your meal has been halved in quantity so it is now just half a slice while waiting an hour for your main course. A similar lack of generosity was apparent when the next door table had a mix of guests having and not having coffee. The waitress was embarrassed in having to tell the guest not having coffee that she was not allowed to give him a chocolate from the box. I had some very tasty stuffed loin of rabbit with parmesan gnocchi, herb oil dressed greens, pickled mustard seeds, oyster mushrooms and Diane sauce, but my wife chose chicken, but advised she had a food intolerance to garlic. When her meal came her chicken was a rather tasteless chicken breast with some vegetables. When the waitress came to clear the plates and asked the ubiquitous question of ‘did you enjoy it?’ my wife was honest and said it was rather dry without a sauce. The waitress returned and informed us that she had told the chef and he had responded that there was no sauce because she wanted to avoid garlic. Really, for a restaurant charging £37.50 for thyme roasted breast of Norfolk chicken with braised chicory, Parma ham, pomme gaufrettes and chicken jus, one would expect the creativity provide an alternative to the chicken jus if garlic was involved. We have been visiting this restaurant for many years and on this occasion we left feeling underwhelmed.

Seated on the Terrace, strange menu, personally thought it was a bit try to hard. Would have liked to have seen a simple uncomplicated steak or traditional dish on the menu. Food was over complicated, lots of effort but very small portions. Personally, the food choices were not for me and very expensive for the money. The side dishes were better. Nice setting by the river on a sunny day. Staff very attentive but did not ask if I was finished before removing my plate, I was still eating. Personally not a location I would go back too, food too fancy for me, although the other older diners appeared to be regulars and clearly liked the menu offered.

As you drive into the restaurant's car parking area, it is clear this is a fine dining establishment. On entry, we received a warm and welcoming greeting. Given the choice of going straight to our table or having a pre lunch drink in the bar, we chose the later option. The cosy bar is a nice place to select your food, review the wine list and relax in the pleasant surroundings. The menus are presented individually in a hard folders. There is one for those who enjoy meat and fish with another for those who are vegan or vegetarian. Excellent way to present the menus and satisfy different dietary requirements. The extensive wine list has something for everyone. The is an excellent range of well priced wines available by the glass as well. After having plenty of time to enjoy our pre lunch drinks and make our choices from the menu, we were shown to the table. It was perfect, being of a good size and in a very nice corner of the restaurant. From the table, we were able to enjoy views of the gardens, terrace and river. My starter of BBQ Glazed Belly Of Pork was OK. It was served without the crispy skin and that layer of fat underneath. Consequently the meat was dry and not juicy. The main course of Roast Saddle Of Lamb With Balsamic Sweetbreads was much better. The lamb was perfectly cooked and tender. However, I was disappointed to not have any noticeable sweetbreads with the dish. We then asked for a 5 selection cheese course to share followed by the deserts. What then happened is that everything was served at the same time. We asked for the deserts to be taken away. The cheese potions were of a generous size but very cold. Fine dining restaurants should serve cheese at room temperature. I don't think they also really understood how a cheese course should be presented. The cheeses should be arranged and the diner advised, that to enjoy each at its best, you start with the mildest and progress through until you have the most pungent one to finish on. To accompany the cheeses we were offered an excellent range of home made biscuits to choose from. Our deserts were frankly disappointing. My Williams Pear And Aniseed Mousse was bland and unexciting. We finished with a mint tea and a coffee. Both were fine and the choice of petit fours to finish with were excellent. To summarise, this restaurant has many positives going for it, but falls short in delivering an exceptional fine dining experience. The staff are very nice and pleasant. Management should give them some extra training so they are also fully conversant with the menus of the day and how each dish is constructed. If the owners of the restaurant aim to achieve a Michelin Star, then I would take a serious look at the team in the kitchen.

The place is amazing in summer, with the terrace overlooking the river. Inside is full of character too, but of not too busy, can be a little quiet, music barely audible so lacks atmosphere. I am vegan so tried all options many times over the years, and they are a bit bland, especially starters. Not much flavour or imagination, rhetorical only thing that’s on point is presentation but personally I’d rather have impressive tasting food, than pretty looking. Service is ok, attentive and timely, could be a bit more personable, warmer.

Most of the waiters and waitresses found it difficult to raise a smile and all three dishes on the Sunday lunch menu were pretty average and not really worth the £55 per head charge. Even though the setting is fantastic I know for sure I could get a better value for money lunch elsewhere that would be far less expensive.

Gourmet food from an imaginative menu, beautifully presented and expertly and pleasantly served in gorgeous surroundings. I'm not sure how you would top this anywhere. Quite superb.

Talbooth Restaurant was fantastic! Beautiful venue, impeccable service, and delicious food. We'll be back in summer to enjoy the riverside view. The surprise birthday dessert was a lovely touch.

Absolutely fantastic. This was THE best meal we have had out for a long time. From the super friendly and attentive staff to the wonderful food NOTHING could be faulted. We went for Saturday lunch. The bread before the meal was gorgeous. We almost asked for some to bring home. The starters, black pudding scotch egg and wood pigeon, were excellent and just the right size. For mains we had veal and guinea fowl. The veal was huge and as soft as butter. The guinea foul was equally good. For dessert we had Jamaican banana pudding and mille feuille. They were faultless. The ambience was perfect and we will definitely be back soon. Overall an extremely enjoyable experience at a reasonable price. Highly, highly recommended.

The terrace by the river is an absolutely beautiful spot for lunch on a sunny day (just ignore the sound of traffic from the busy road just behind the trees!). The service was wonderful and the food looks and tasted amazing. Would thoroughly recommend for a special meal out.

We came here to have our anniversary meal and everything was perfect as expected! Friendly and very polite staff who work very hard to make everyone around them happy. Food was nice and on time and reasonably priced. We love the outdoor tables as the scenery is to die for but as it was a bit chilly for us so we asked to be moved inside, they were very accommodating. My only recommendation would be to broaden then menu a bit as the choices are a little limited.

This was our first visit. Initial impression on arrival was very good. Beautiful environs. We loved the terrace table with river view and with French style canopy and gas heaters. The temperature was great. The food was top class. We both had a delicious smoked haddock and poached egg tart with the thinnest and lightest pastry. My wife had lamb and I had ribs of beef. The meat was top class and the vegetables were really good especially the cauliflower cheese. I had a very good plate of cheese and my wife had what she described as the best ever sticky toffee pudding. The staff were plentiful and well trained but not intrusive. All in all a first rate five star experience.

Evening meal on a Friday to celebrate my wife's birthday. We have eaten here and The Pier restaurant many times before and the food has always been of a similar excellent standard. What let the evening down for us was very slow and robotic service (It was busy but we expected better) with waits of between 30 and 40 minutes between ordering and our starter arriving and a similar wait after our main course before our desert order was taken( I think we had been forgotten if I am being honest).Odd and inconvenient that we had to share an ice bucket for the wine with another table some distance away ! What was most annoying however was the continual and unwanted background of some indistinguishable Music (bass sounds thumping away as we eat) from a wedding reception in an adjoining building adjacent to the restaurant. Not something we expected or wanted when spending £200+ on a Special celebratory meal. With the negatives outweighing the positives I am not sure we will be returning to the Talbooth any time soon.

I was lucky enough to be taken for my birthday. We had the most wonderful experience and the food was delicious. A lovely menu to choose from and extensive wine list. We were lucky enough to be able to sit outside and this was really nice. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend here for a lovely birthday/celebration meal. This was our first visit but it won't be our last.

Perfect evening for our daughters 18th b’day meal. As such a beautiful eve we were offered the terrace for our dining experience. It was our first time visiting and would defiantly recommend. Great service, delicious food, beautiful location. Thoughtful touch from the kitchen with a surprise little b’day sweet treat for my daughter. Also rather enjoyed the wonderful chocolate box choice with the coffee. Thank you to all the staff for a wonderful dining experience.

Fantastic cheese counter, helpful staff and super deli and wine selection. Stocked up for an evening in when staying in very quaint Wivenhoe. Will certainly be back.

the barmaids was lovely but being the only person in for food and having to wait almost an hour for fry up and a bacon baguette which the baguette came out wrong from what I asked for so had to send it back and then had to wait a while again which my dad had already finished his food by time mine came back out

A independent hidden gem in the middle of Colchester city centre, this beautiful little cafe serves up some great food and drinks. They have both indoor and outdoor seating and staff are very friendly and helpful. Food includes a range of yummy omelettes (sadly forgot to take a photo), sandwiches, jacket potatoes and various breakfasts. Definitely recommend a visit to this place!
