Rovers Tye in Colchester

I hadn’t been to Rovers Tye for a while and was hoping to see some improvements, but unfortunately, things seem to have gone downhill. The garlic mushroom starter was far too oily, which made it quite unappetizing. Additionally, I was disappointed to find that there was no soap in the men’s toilet by the front door. In my opinion, in a restaurant, basic hygiene should be a priority. Overall, it feels like the quality and attention to detail have slipped. Hopefully, these issues will be addressed soon.

This is a very old place full of character with a good atmosphere. The staff are all exemplary. Polite, kind, helpful and friendly. I cannot fault them or the service. The food is generally, technically OK but my otherwise well presented "XL Mixed grill" was good except for the supposed "star of the show", the steak. I had ordered medium but it was well done, only a minor issue, but the cut was the toughest, most sinue and tough gristle laden 8oz of steak I think I've ever had. A few bites were literally unchewable and I was forced to spit them out... a bit embarrasing in a public dining area. It's a shame and may have been a freak occurrence. I wouldn't avoid the place... unless it happens next time too.

I visited Rovers Tye this evening for a nice, relaxed dinner and I was absolutely provided with one! Our waitress, Shannon, was brilliant! She has such a friendly and welcoming attitude towards everyone, she lit up the room! The customer service provided was amazing, I would 101% recommend your next meal to be here!

Excellent food for the price you pay. The staff are so friendly and knowledgeable. Food is cheap and steak is always well cooked. Would recommend the slow and low short rib.

Wow what an amazing place to eat. Come from lowestoft and it's well worth travelling for will definitely be back. Food was 10 out of 10. Service was great even though it was packed only down point was I was to full for dessert. Thank you all so much

Great service, Shannon at rovers tye was so lovely, we went out for my daughters 3rd birthday and she played with her and my other daughter to with the presents, the food was hot and Shannon made our experience fun, thank you ☺️

Fantastic evening 25/1/25 Booked for 13 of us for our son and nephews 17th birthdays. Food was amazing and came out quickly and hot. Service was brilliant by all staff especially Abbie. Thank you so much, we'll be back soon!

The staff at Rovers Tye are always polite and accommodating, especially when my mother requested a different table due to my SEN daughter continuously running out of the restaurant. They are fantastic when it comes to allergies as well which is why it’s our go to as we have 2 children with allergies and can always count on Rovers to make her feel included! And a huge bonus is the food is always fantastic, especially the low and slow beef rib which has been a great addition to the menu.

normally serves good food but this time served stale tasting food that left me sick to my stomach.

Nice easy experience. Family friendly. Steak was a bit tough and chewy so may want to stick to chicken but we enjoyed ourselves :)

Festive Dinner with friends. Some had ordered off the festive menu and the rest chose to order off the standard menu. Even though it was very busy our orders were taken very quickly and the food served in good time. All had a great time with the staff being very helpful.

Reasonable pub grub. If you like steak, avoid busy times, the standard tends to drop. Update, most recent visit: Bar was busy, not many serving staff were working. Food took over an hour to arrive, mine was cold, though my wife's was warm. The drinks were nice though.

We've been coming here for years but gone down hill lately and won't now return. Some grumpy and rude staff mainly the problem with bad attitudes. Mainly the one who addresses everyone as "my lovelies". Poor quality steak and beef too. Portions reduced in size. Shame but we'll find somewhere else

Met up with friends for lunch, we go on average fortnightly. Had a good meal, desert and drinks. Service was quick, the staff doing a great job of looking after us. It was busy but enjoyable.

The bar was very busy which was only to be expected at this time of year. My wife and I ordered a mixed grill, and a steak flatbread with side order of chips and onion rings. It took over an hour to come out of the kitchen. My flatbread was cold, as were my sides. My wife's mixd grill was hot. The drinks were ok, and served quickly enough.

Used to be one of mine and my family's favourite places to eat we would have every birthday meal, works meal etc here but last few times we have been its been awful, the menus are sticky the staff (apart from 1 waitress) don't look like they want to be there I stood in dog poo in the beer garden while having a vape we was trying to eat and a dog kept whimpering and wineing (I'm a dog lover but when I'm trying to eat....its not really want I want to hear) 2 of the toilets didn't have toilet roll when i asked all i got was theres other toilets over there, only good think was the food....it was genuinely the worst experience we've had here. Don't think we'll be bak.

Go to place for the family eat out meal. Food has improved recently and not too expensive either.

We sat in one of the booths, and the seats were filthy. There were flies crawling over them. We had the christmas dinner and the brocolli was very hard. The turkey was one of those Bernard Matthews round joints.( yuck). My friend had christmas pudding with brandy sauce, but the girl who served us didn't know if brandy sauce was supposed to be hot or cold! We had to tell her ourselves! We were also kept waiting for our drinks, when we ordered them. The girl who waited on us was very pleasent though. One good thing though, the hot chicken strips were very nice! Xx

We had our Christmas Meal here last night and it was very disappointing,The prawn cocktail had hardly any sauce on and the lettuce looked horrible,Our Turkey roast dinner was very disappointing,The Turkey slices were round like it came from a Bernard Matthews joint???The broccoli 🥦 was very had and the runner beans ,Roast potatoes were mushy and Yorkshire pudding didn't looked cooked properly,Deserts were just as bad

Pub with a friendly atmosphere, in a great location for Colchester with lots of parking.

Food was OK although we were made to feel unwelcome as soon as we finished eating. Apologies for the inconvenience we caused by showing a blue light card when we suddenly had the bill put in front of us

Our server was outstanding and went above and beyond to make our 4yr old son’s birthday lunch as special as possible.

Had a lovely meal me and my partner was served by Abbey and she was amazing. Told use about all the offers that you had on and also persuaded use to get double gins instead of singles. Food was amazing good price 100% be back. Highly recommended

Need to spend some money on the toilets as they are a discrace painted over tiles scratched through, leeking toilet or urinal water all over the floor, realy lets the place down, Its a shame

The meals were in the £13.95p for two Mion-Fri. Would definately reccomend. The puddings were also awesome, but purchased separately.

I've given everything 5 star based on this visit. Tbh, I've never had a bad meal there and really enjoy it. The price is absolutely perfect for the style of food, £36 for 2 drinks and dinner is, ideal for a mid week treat.

Just came back from having meal with my family and it was horrible, I had turkey roast and it was cold and un edible, the Yorkshire pudding was rubbery and had biscoff cheesecake and it was solid unlike a cheesecake, so not somewhere I would go back to to answer your question, we never got asked whether it was all OK, in fact because it was busy, we had to keep finding a waitress to order each time, if we was asked then I would have complained

A table was booked by telephohne for seven people for a reunion and particularly asking about bringing a dog.When the couple with the dog arrived to sit down with the others already seated They were told they could not sit in this area. They mentioned they had driven from the south coast for two and a half hours and were told they had to sit in the confined dark bar area away from the other five or all seven could move to there - the table available seats four! The staff were uninterested dismissive and unhelpful. They were unaccommodating . When the meal was finished and all joined together in the confined bar area seven attempting to sit around a table for four and bring chairs to the table they were told not to move the chairs and get them from an area around the corner! The staff were not attentive or helpful in any way towards us.

We come every few months and always happy with the food and service :)

We popped in Wednesday lunch and were welcomed by a warm friendly atmosphere and friendly staff Throughout our meal we were checked in but not too much and the staff couldn’t have been any friendlier or professional As the place filled with more guests they kept the same approach and attended to everyone Great food at a highly respectable price Thank you to all the staff both up front and behind the scenes

My friends recommended this place after coming before, personally I've never eaten here however I had such an incredible first time. The staff were absolutely lovely especially Abbie who took our orders and ensured we were accommodated to well, as well as Maxi who ran our food and was so so kind. Both staff members were so positive and full of joy which made my time here even better. Not only this, the service was brilliant and the food was absolutely delicious. 100% recommend this place for anyone wondering how good it is! (I'm also a uni student so i had a lovely time out with my new found friends)

Went out for lunch the menu has great offers and I still found something to eat being on a diet the kitchen accommodated the swaps I needed, Staff could smile once in a while and make more of an effort with their customer service but in all clean and tidy venue

Service the girl was very patronising my darling every other word quite rude. Food was gross how do you mess up chicken strips and chips? Not sure. Entrance to the car park is unclear . Toilets were like school toilets that had been messed up . Tables were sticky Would not recommend

Came for a late Sunday lunch/early dinner with Family. Wasn't too busy with customers at 5pm. The waiting staff were so lovely and really friendly despite seeming really busy themselves. I wouldn't recommend the roast dinners at this time of day as with with our meat/mushroom pie(v) we literally had peas, brocolli, a few underwhelming roast potatoes, one stuffing ball and gravy! It was ok but disappointing. Everyone else seemed to feel their food was acceptable but not great too. It's a shame as I really like this place as a venue but it's the second disappointing meal I've had here in the last year so will go elsewhere next time I visit my family.

Shared a platter, though we were hungry we didn't finish it Good pub food at sensible prices, original chips were not iing hot, they replaced them quickly without fuss.

Been here twice on the second occasion we were treated so poorly it was just unreal we opted for a buy one get one free burger only to be told that the deal was not on for the burgers we chose. When I ask the waitress why it wasn’t available they said it’s on the menu have a look I told them I’ve looked she/he looked but could not find it had to get a colleague. Nobody seem to know where it was to tell you certain burgers it took a few of them to find it very very poor.
