I give him a 1 star because it does not allow me to give no stars at all. Looking forward to another amazing Scottish breakfast, but this was the worse experience in Edinburgh. Black pudding, sausages, tomato, bacon and some other processed meat was not edible. Waa like rubber. Coffee was of the worse quality. Had to put 6 sugars and yet could not drink it, as it was so bitter. Place is very dirty. Please choose another spot to eat!

This place is an absolute gem of a deal! Just minutes away from Haymarket station it’s gots authentic French baguette sandwiches, pastries, and wine. We got the sandwiches which came with salad and crisps and the soup of the day (tomato) which came with a sliced baguette. All of it was wonderful and fresh, check this out for a quick budget bite! With a moka, tea, 2 sandwiches, and a soup it came to just under £18!

Ask the proprietor, "What's a Frenchman doing in Edinburgh?" Authentic French pastries & meal. Biggest meringues I've very seen! Enough for 4 but we 2 ate it all LOL. Established and same owner for 30 years. Great service with a smile by the staff. So glad we checked it out. Instead of just posting on Insta, recommend a visit - he's old school and doesn't do socials.

Misleading picture menu on the table of the Fresh Cut Croque Monsieur with appetising side salad, which actually appeared as a 2 thin processed sliced bread ham n cheese toastie with chopped iceberg. Tasty enough I guess. Scottish breakfast OK. Service wasn't great...forgot our tea and coffee ordered with breakfasts, and when reminded, bought each separately and forgot milk ...which had actually been an option on ordering. Bit sloppy all around really :(

We went here for lunch and it took over half an hour to get a glass of orange juice and a sandwich, unsure if they were understaffed or something as the place was only maybe 10% full. The fresh orange juice was terrible value, over 3 pounds for barely more than half a glass. When the food came it was very nice and we enjoyed it.

We were in the take away place on the right. I was outside waiting for him when a youngish lad came out of the sit in restaurant side with a broom chasing a large rat. I imediately said to my partner we are not eating here, there was a workman behind us who had already finished eating one of the things he bought, he started swearing, clearly unhappy about the fact he had just finished something from here. A bit like snails (unfortunately no longer on the menu), Le Marché Francais is certainly not to everyone's taste. For many years, the décor was pinned reluctantly with tacks to the wall, continuously trying to escape its shackles - and succeeding in many places, eliciting shocked looks among the more image-conscious diners who had inadvertently wandered through the door. In recent months, the premises have been completely redecorated in a fashion as quirky and eccentric as the character of its owner - who is at once scatty, hare-brained, frenetic - yet humorous, eager to please his customers, hard-working and always with a kind word and a joke for everyone. As previous reviewers mention, the service is haphazard when the owner has no waiter to help him but that is quickly forgotten when the food arrives....in true French cuisine tradition, the food never disappoints and all at a reasonable price. Certainly not for the image-conscious and a world away from the glass and steel of the "here-today, gone-tomorrow" chains of the city centre and George St., Le Marché Francais is a welcome reminder of a small back-street restaurant in Lyon, Bordeaux or Toulouse where substance is valued more than image. Edinburgh would be a less cosmopolitan place without this marvellously eccentric bistro. Vive Le Marché Francais!

I got a fruit tart and the pastry was crisp and fresh, with the fruit and custard also tasty and not tinned. They also do meal deals with soup, baguettes and crisps for a good price. Fruit tart was only £1.80 compared to supermarket/cafés which would be steeper in comparison. Friendly older man running the place whose name I believe is Pierre.

I’ve been here before and love it. Having worked in France over the years I know what to expect. In a lot of French restaurants or brasseries it’s all about the food, the chefs, the service. You could sit the table in a barn but if the food is could that’s all that matters. Le Marche Francais owned and operated by Pierre has been here all of 18 years. He started a wine vintner switching over to a cafe and then a braserrie as the competition for wine selling became cutthroat al though he still sources the most beautiful of wines for clients he has built up over the years. His knowledge on wine being French is superb. Friends use this place continually, it’s always on the verge of being done up and is tired with the decor but after this virus is gone Pierre tells me it’s his first visit in changing the appearance. Modest 12 cafe tables and chairs at the back and three high tables at the front. A servery with takeaway food at the front of the shop buying his baguette sandwiches and hot pastries do very well with the workers on sites nearby and that’s in competition to Greggs across the road. His quality sells much better as cheaper, his costs are very reasonable when compared to other units charging small fortunes for the same coffees. I met a friend and we had a quick catch up over an omelette and salad that was both delicious and didn’t break the bank alongside an Orangina as no wine allowed at present. The French chef his brother and an experienced cuisiner made us a delicious dish in quick time. Opting for a cheese plate we had delicious bleu D’Auvergne instead of the usual blue brie alongside some Roquefort, Reblochon. French bistro French produce. If you want authentic French service and don’t care about not having Beverly hill surroundings then pop in and see Pierre. It’s quick, zany, mad but we love it.
