Saturday evening dinner - ideal location for locals and visitors alike. Lovely interesting building and the atmosphere in the restaurant is classy but relaxed. The food was super. The lamb shank was particularly good but a huge portion. Luckily I managed to make room for dessert as the cakes are delicious. Service was great - efficient and professional but also friendly with a good sense of humour. A great place for a meal any time of day. Complements and thank you to all involved. We hope to be back soon!

The staff in this bistro are lovely. Le Bistrot is situated within the French Institute (formerly Lothian Chambers) and has understated charm & elegance. The quotations on the walls are tres amusant! The menu is varied enough, though perhaps for L'Institut Français the menu disappoints: no cassoulet in sight, the ‘terrine de campagne’ is more smooth pate than the expected coarse hock-like pate, the salmon was over cooked; that said, the scallops were tasty & the lamb shank was beautifully tender & moist. Washed down with a very quaffable & affordable bottle of Cotes-du-Rhône. Very reasonably priced & artistically presented cheese board. Mon mocha etait parfait! It is customary for establishments in Scotland’s capital to automatically add a service charge to the bill, usually 10%. I do not object in principle, though feel that this should be stated at the beginning (as opposed to the two options offered: pay the net amount or the second fee with the 10% service charge, when the bill is brought). How about the French option to pay 5% service? Just a suggestion!Whilst our dining experience was enjoyable & ideally situated prior to an evening Ghost Tour, we would not rush back owing to a fairly quotidian menu.

I was at the Bistrot with my two teenagers, and had a limited time because they had to sit an exam at the Institut français. When I ordered, I told the server that I had a limited time, and one of my teenagers had to change their order, since I was told that it would take 25 minutes to cook it. But after waiting 30 minutes, nothing was served, and I had to ask someone what was happening. I still had to wait 10 minutes to be served, and when I complained, the manager told me, in a very agressive way, that I should have ordered sandwiches if I was in a hurry!!! The result is that my teenagers had 2 minutes to eat, that the food was not correctly cooked, and eventually they went to their exam without having eaten a lot. I think they had forgotten my order, but instead of admitting it, I was harshly told that I should have ordered sandwiches! So I really don't recommend this place, except if you want to experience the typical French rudeness.

This was our first visit to the building since it stopped being a Council Registry office(!) and became an authentic style French Bistro. A welcome conversion I feel...... We had lunch. There is a lighter menu offering breakfasts and lunches (croque monsieur etc), and a more substantial a la carte menu that also offers a two or three course prix fixe. The food was good quality bistro style food and priced very reasonably in respect of both quality and quantity. They are licensed and have a good enough wine list. The waiting staff were authoritative and efficient in that French way (ie they catch your eye when they want to). There are several restaurants in the immediate area but few that offer such good value or a genuinely French feel that makes you feel you might be on holiday.

This was our first visit to Le Bistrot and we loved it! We arrived on a busy lunchtime and were lucky enough to get one of the last tables. Right from the start the service was warm and friendly, and very attentive. We chose from the set menu which was great value, and we weren’t disappointed - both starters and both mains were delicious, and the meal was finished off perfectly with a slice of apple tart!! The two scones we took home with us were equally as good!!

Fantastic set lunch menu. Food was typically French rustique and excellent value. Right in the heart of the Old Town just off the Royal Mike. Great for breakfast, brunch , lunch or dinner.

For all French visitors or students in Edinburgh this is a bit of home. The portions are rather large. We both ordered soup (onion) and a sandwich. They already looked at us weird and they were right. The big bowl of soup with bread would have sufficed! Tuna sandwich as I know it from here. We felt right at home. The French quotes on the windows were a nice touch.

So cute, easy, and quick. They gave us a free dessert, because we were there close to closing! We went for dinner and only shared appetizers, but the main menu looked amazing.

Selten so herrlich gehabt! Hingehen!

What a fabulous little place! We only wanted drinks, but if we’d have had more time in Edinburgh we would’ve definitely come back for lunch or dinner, the restaurant smelt amazing! And the food looked fab. Even for a drinks visit the staff were great, welcoming and accommodating.

Having been seated by the manager, we were then ignored by all the waiting staff. Menus arrived nearly 10mins later from the manager, and after waiting a further 10mins including directly asking the staff if we could order and trying to get their attention we left. To clarify the situation, we arrived mid-afternoon and although relatively full, most of the actual lunch service was at tail end or finished, there were at least four members of staff on duty and a couple who arrived after we did were served before we even got a menu. I wanted to like this bistro as it seemed popular and vibrant with a good menu and reviews, but that was not enough to counter the poor service and life is too short...

Me and my Wife booked a meal for Saturday 18th January. Booked for 5.30pm as we were going to a concert at the Festival Theatre. Great location on the corner of George iv bridge and the hight street. It was relatively busy even for that early time. I must say the food was brilliant. I love Fish so had the Salmon starter along with Linguine and King Prawns for the main. My wife had the soup and then steak. Great service and reasonably priced. Highy Recommended

Cet endroit est fabuleux! Authentic food and lovely waiters. I would particularly recommend the Souris d'Agneau or Lamb shank... just wow!!! My partner had a fillet steak and it was absolutely beautifully cooked! Talking about desserts.. there were the best I had in any restaurants, in Edinburgh and at this price. Merci

I am afraid the dinner was overall a bit disappointing given the Fixed price menu. The service was good and starters too. However one of our party order a med rare steak which arrived well done. We sent it back and it was returned very rare and seemingly covered in pepper. We were doing to send it back but already we were out of sync as we had finished our mains. (These were steak too - my was med rare ( arrived more medium) but was good.). It is the first time ive sent a steak back but i know that a good chef would normally ensure the food was prepared well. Sadly this dodnt happen. Both chefs appeared upstairs later.

Passing by all the tourist traps, we popped into Le Bistro on the off-chance and they kindly made space for us despite having a huge lunch party due soon. Since it was a chilly day I took on board the suggestion of a sausage and mash special.

Was here for a work do, with a large group of colleagues. We had a set menu which we had agreed with the restaurant. The food was all lovely, the portions are certainly generous. We all enjoyed our meal accompanied with good wine. The waiters were very good and credit to the chef and his team dealing with a large group of people and ensuring that the food was ready to be served at the same time.

Food is excellent and the staff are really lovely. Had warm goats cheese followed by bourguignon and an amazing desert from their great selection. Only minor thing is we were advised we did not require additional veg but I personally would have preferred potatoes so just a more to check what actually comes with the main. Would highly recommend though.

My third (and worst) visit here. My wife and I came here for lunch on my birthday. The service was lethargic and almost grudging; a Spanish waiter was virtually incomprehensible. The pea and ham soup was watery and lacking flavour. The food for the main courses was food was reasonable but nothing special. The atmosphere in this restaurant has declined from somewhere fun and special into being boring, dull and casual. Completely inadequate for what describes itself as a French Bistro.

In the same building as the French Consulate is Le Bistrot, a delightful and delicious casual dining experience. For starters my wife had mussels, I had lentil soup. For the main course my wife had the chicken stew, I had the beef Provencal. We shared the dessert of apricot tart. Gourmet quality. 29 Pounds!

Warm welcome from friendly service team. £12 for a beer and a cocktail is good value in Edinburgh. Cool lager was refreshing while aperol spritz could have been less dilute. Still liked the interior and would return for food another time. Portions looked big at other tables.

The service was amazing firstly, very helpful and friendly. Secondly the food was perfection! I had mussels and beef stew which were so good! We ended up staying 4 hours drinking and eating and they were more than happy to let us take our time. We were on a city break but will definitely go back when I visit Edinburgh again.

If I could give someone a tip, I would say: don’t go to this bar. The drinks are not good (tried both cocktails and mocktails). The “magical” aspect of it is fun, but five seconds later you find yourself having to drink an awful drink :( our mocktails looked like normal sodas, and the cocktails were pure alcohol. Additionally, we went to several other places in Edinburgh where we drank cocktails/mocktails/beer and this was by far the worst and also the one we spent the most money in. Go to this place if you ONLY want to make influencer videos for your Instagram with drinks that have bubbles/smoke, but otherwise are terrible. Only pyrotechnics, no flavor.
