This review is following the 'we were cancelled' review. I was the 'very special person' for whom the booking was made on the occasion of my birthday. The day had been planned in detail and this restaurant was selected because of the excellent reviews and location, and we were to spend a relaxing couple of hours with great food, atmosphere etc. To say we were disappointed is an understatement, the attitude of the owner/manager was defensive, defeated, she didn't care if we stayed or went. Obviously we went! The place was packed with post-cricket revellers, obviously their custom (maximum alcohol) was more precious than ours, the excuse that they wouldn't leave was totally lame and apparently the chef was due to arrive in half an hour ....... We ended up in Pizza Express - good food and service but not quite what we had planned. Sort yourself out L'Aventure you are meant to be top rate.

We booked this restaurant weeks ago for six people for a very special person’s big birthday. We arrived at 5 pm to be told our table was cancelled as there were staff problems, the chef was not due in for another 30 minutes and people were still there from lunch and had not left yet!! All the owner was concerned with was that we were giving her extra stress!! Stress - we were there to give her our custom!! Needless to say we walked out!!! Never again and the indifferent attitude from the lady was concerning!! Avoid!!

My favorite restaurant in London. Full marks for ambience, service, food and wine. A hidden gem. Pity it is so far away from Barbados!

This is a lovely old fashioned French restaurant (no website!) under the same ownership for 44 years according to the French lady who runs it. Excellent French food, unfussy but beautifully presented with generous portion sizes and at a very reasonable price. The ambience is lovely with a conservatory feel and an open terrace to sit outside in the summer. We’ve been twice and hope to return.

Visited with friends for luncheon before a meeting at nearby Lords Cricket Ground. We were treated like Lords by Madame and her fantastic chef. The food was magnificent, wine impeccable and service outstanding. A great little venue and I will return.

We came from south west London, Twickenham and we were delighted. Well worth the long trip. Lovely ambience, attentive and polite waiting staff, great food and wine - a really pleasant atmosphere. It was expensive, but where isn’t - if good quality. We will definitely return sooner rather than later and we look forward to enjoying a real gem of a restaurant. Excellent all round.

Been going there many years and this has been a good local at a fair price. Recent price hike results in price on average going from £90 to £150. We went there tonight- they tried to charge £50 for a starter. When questioned the response was” they would notice wouldn’t they” I would love to know what”they” means- and then came the “well, take £10 off” The restaurant scene is competitive, and this place needs to be resigned to the history books while it’s owner goes to finishing school Go somewhere custom is valued , and that’s not here

An absolutely wonderful experience. We cannot say more about the time we had. All was terrific: the menu, the atmosphere and the service. A treasure of a restaurant. Highly recommend to anyone considering L’Aventure.

Visited this restaurant for the first time after attending an event at nearby Lords Cricket Ground. Friendly and attentive service and very good French food cooked classically and well. House wine a decent price and very drinkable. Plenty of people in the restaurant so a good atmosphere and they seemed to be enjoying the experience. Pity there was no vedgie option but pescaterians are OK.

We recommend: fois gras, rack of lamb, chocolate truffle or apple tart. Sit up front in the conservatory if possible. Quieter. Reservations mandatory!

We went on a friday evening and the service and food was good. The restaurant was fairly full. my wife said her artichoke salad was good but she said looked messy the way it was presented. They could add a few more starters and mains to the menu. The wine from £35 Inside is well laid out with white table cloths and the lighting just right. We would return again.

Recently visited this restaurant. Don't get me wrong .... lovely setting, nice ambience, food quality was very good, however just did not live up to expectations and there were a number of niggling concerns. Firstly, attending with children, the choice of starters was Chicory salad and roquefort, artichoke, cream of cauliflower soup and smoked salmon pancake. Well - how disappointing was it that six people wanted the smoked salmon pancake but could only serve two portions, but it was delicious. The diners who ate the chicory salad and artichoke highly rated their dishes. Main courses (seabass and halibut) were very nice and thankfully there were enough for the group. Presentation was excellent and delicious. The deserts were very good, So why did i mark this restaurant down. Firstly, the unavailability of the starters - had I known there would be a risk of not being enough - would have called ahead or just not booked here to begin with. Secondly, we asked for some more bread and the attitude was .... if i give you some more .... may not have enough for other customers - sorry, but not my problem! Thirdly - Manager/waitress - seemed to be flustered on numerous occasions and said, "well if you all order this i may not have enough for anyone else" ... well i'm very sorry abut at your rates that shouldn't come into it ........it ruined the experience. Would i go again .....Only without children, and in a group of 1 or 2 people and having checked in advance that they have sufficient quantities otherwise you could be feeling let down!

This restaurant is a SCAM ! Don't even think of going there !!! We've made a reservation by phone for the lunch of the 25th of december (Christmas lunch) that we had to cancel. We phoned them 1 day before to advise them, in order to not show off and leave the table free for someone else. The waitress on the phone was not respectful, she shout through the phone and put pressure on us to pay a cancellation fees (50£!!!!) !! There was no mention of any fee when the booking was placed, not even an email to confirm the booking or conditions ! They just put pressure to grab some money ! Which is unaceptable ! She claimed that they already bought the food... LOL is this for real ? This restaurant is a joke ! The staff are a bunch a clowns ! There are many good french restaurant in London that you should check if you want a real french experience !!!! or at least a well behaved one !

Fui anoche con amigos a este restaurante muy francés, no sé por qué lo dejamos tanto tiempo para volver. We have been going for over 20 years. The Madame who started it is still running a consistently great French restaurant. Today the food was even better than usual. Perfectly prepared and presented. Wine on the expensive side. Would prefer a few choices around £30.

This bijou French restaurant in St Johns Wood became our venue of choice for a family celebration when grandpa Alan was ensconced in a nearby residential medical facility, and how that turned into a slice of luck, as tasty as the terrine of offer at L’Aventure.Food was excellent, and our personalised Engagement menus included some of my favourite French classics including a delicious starter of snails in a creamy sauce with filo pastry which was followed, as it was Christmas, by a succulent turkey and rounded off with a terrific tarte tatin.Service for our party of thirteen was exemplary, and Madame was completely charmant. L’Aventure gets a full five stars from me.

We were there just after Christmas for a family dinner for 14, organised on short notice to celebrate my nephew’s engagement. When we arrived the table was set, as well as there being a side table for the celebratory champagne. The service was friendly and welcoming, and several of us were able to practice our limited French-speaking skills, as the staff were French. The food was excellent and we were all served at the same time, which isn’t easy for a party of that size. I had the escargot starter, delicious venison main and an apple pie for dessert, as well as the cheeseboard. My wife and I had ordered tarte tatin but they felt that it hadn’t come out well, which is why they made us an apple pie, instead. There was a range of wines but we went for the house selections, both red and white, and they were both very nice and good quality, as well as being under £30.They had also printed special menus commemorating the event, which was a lovely touch. Overall, a wonderful evening and I will go back if I am ever out and about in the area. I have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

We visited yesterday for Christmas Lunch. We found parking nearby on the street, and the restaurant was welcoming despite our having arrived early. We were looking for somewhere small, and quiet, and the ambience satisfied this. L'Aventure is a French Restaurant. The service throughout the meal was relaxed, and I found it hard to select my meal, such were the range of delicious options on the menu. The food was beautifully presented when it arrived, and fully lived up to expectations, satisfying quality and portions. Thank you for making Christmas Day special.

Reserved well in advance. Welcome was warm and very pleasant. Restaurant was nearly full but the management kept up admirably. Foiegrass was delicious and the mains were equally good. Super Chablis and the desert was spot on. To be commended.😄

El menú y la lista de vinos pueden ser limitados, el lugar un poco difícil de encontrar y cuando está lleno un poco ruidoso Pero la comida era deliciosa, aunque cara. Servicio excelente, una noche divertida y un alivio para ser tratado. El entrante, mejillones y vieiras en salsa de azafrán, fue memorable. El principal, pato, era excelente aunque demasiada ensalada con él. No tenía espacio para el postre. Definitivamente regresará cuando se sienta ruborizado.

Ambiente agradable. El personal realmente no sabe cómo dirigir un restaurante. En su mayoría clientela local. La comida es básica en francés, pero no impresiona realmente y usted esperaría hacerlo a este nivel de precios. La lista de vinos es pequeña con algunos borgoñones bastante básicos y algunas opciones de la región más amplia de Burdeos. Una "taberna" francesa básica a un precio como un restaurante gastronómico.

What a wonderful place. These kinds of places are hard to find. We were greeted with a friendly professionalism of a bygone age. The waiter was very knowledgeable on both the food and wine menus both of which were very reasonable, considering the quality on offer. The food was of an impeccable standard, beautifully cooked and presented. This is most definitely one of the best French meals my wife and I have had and we have dined at various top establishments around France. Highly recommended

The restaurant is on one hand the perfect little Restaurant in St.John Wood and on the other trying to be something it really isn't.

I was introduced to L'Aventure over twenty years ago, have been many times, and have always enjoyed excellent food and service. You feel like you are in a very good Parisian bistro. Everyone I have taken there would go back, not least to meet Catherine again, who is such a friendly and accommodating host. It is testament to it's local reputation that it is still around. Long may it continue!

Me invitaron a un muy sabroso almuerzo de cumpleaños el lunes. Esta no fue nuestra primera visita a este maravilloso restaurante. El ambiente es tan perfecto. Nos hicieron sentir especiales por la encantadora dueña [que siempre es absolutamente encantadora, no importa lo ocupada que esté] y el camarero. Este restaurante es un tesoro local. No es demasiado caro teniendo en cuenta la calidad de la comida. Sin duda volveremos pronto.

Reservamos una mesa para 4 para la última noche (sábado 12), para el cumpleaños de mi esposa, a través de Open Table que confirmó nuestra reserva a través de una reserva a la que se hace referencia por correo electrónico. Llegamos a que la señora, propietaria y administradora del restaurante durante décadas, nos dijera que no tenía mesa para nosotros. Mi esposa produjo la confirmación de mesa abierta en su teléfono, pero esto no cortó el hielo. La señora dijo que las personas anteriores a nosotros habían dicho que tenían una reserva, lo que implicaba que ella no tenía un sistema de reservas o no se molestaba en adherirse a ella. Ella ni siquiera miró ninguna lista de reserva. Ella dijo que podíamos esperar media hora, pero como mi esposa está actualmente con muletas con gran dolor, esto no era una opción.

Unfortunately we were only two tables at the night we visited. Excellent food and service highly recommended. Dont eat before you go as the portions are quite large. Tried their lamb and duck excellent

Time flies and we last visited here as the proprietor and restaurant were both closing for a refit, so maybe 5 years ago. Anyway good to see that both have benefitted and that it remains a quiet serious establishment where one can peacefully enjoy an upmarket old fashioned( but none the worse for that) French cuisine. It was good to be able to hear our conversation, dine off of pristine table cloths, and enjoy a sense of well being. Won’t be waiting until 2023 to return

L’Aventure is an authentic French restaurant, you really feel as though you’re in France. The atmosphere is great, it’s big enough to have some atmosphere but small enough to be cosy and intimate. The staff are friendly and the food is excellent.

Desde el momento que entras en L'Aventure de Blenheim Terraza te transporta a el epicentro de delicias culinarias francesas. La bienvenida de Mme Catherine es tan francés que inmediatamente sientes que estás en París, o Lyon o bien, de hecho, pero la calle Johns Wood Londres. Ofrecen un propio champán marca que supera las grandes marcas por mano - no lo estropeéis con kir! El ambiente es sofisticado, elegante en un entorno compacto realmente precioso. Es excelente en todas las categorías.

Fuimos a este restaurante para disfrutar de una tarde tranquila el sábado. Sorprendentemente, el restaurante no estaba demasiado ocupado, por lo que el servicio fue rápido y muy atento.

This is one of those places you wonder why it is not well known and packed. The situation in a street off Abbey Road is well known and frequented by locals who know what a gem it is. The ambience is smart and relaxed, the food menu small yet clearly from a select choice of fresh produce, hence the handwritten menu (you do need some help deciphering it). The food was superb, the service attentive and helpful. A place I look forward to returning.

Excellent meal despite their being frantically busy, delicious food, the artichoke was a work of art! Service was a little slow but only to be expected and they made up for it!

This is the second time we have visited this restaurant for lunch. The food, service and ambiance is absolutely outstanding. Highly recommended.

Este encantador restaurante cerca de Abbey Road en la calle Johns Wood ofrece cocina francesa auténtica y una excelente carta de vinos. Fuimos por tercera vez la semana pasada y nos pareció que el restaurante de su alto nivel de calidad habitual. Los precios no son baratos, pero L'Aventure ofrece una gran relación calidad-precio y es un lugar para disfrutar de un largo almuerzo o cena (sin ser presionados de ninguna manera). Totalmente recomendado.

Reservé con antelación. Fuimos un viernes por la noche y no estaba completamente lleno. El restaurante está a 10 minutos a pie de la calle de la estación de metro de John's Wood, en una pequeña hilera de tiendas y restaurantes. Tiene una terraza, que es adorable cuando el clima es caliente. El comedor está decorado atractivamente. El personal era acogedor y eficiente. Lo mejor de todo, no nos rush y tuvimos una noche muy relajado y cómodo. Francés cantando suavemente tocaba de fondo, que contribuyeron a la atmósfera.

Sigue siendo un misterio cómo L'Aventure, logra mantener el nivel después de todos los años y ¿cómo no se cansa de ser bueno en lo que hacen.

Hemos sido comer aquí durante 27 años o más, así que obviamente durante ese periodo hemos disfrutado de nuestra estancia.

Yo tenía el almuerzo en L'Aventure hace unos días y estaba encantado por la comida, la tranquila elegancia y el verdadero Frenchness del lugar y el encantador Patronne. Los caracoles de hojaldre era extremadamente bueno como el paté. Seguimos con lomo y lubina. Ambos eran cocinadas exactamente como uno desearía con salsas hermoso. El queso era muy buena y la selección de vinos excelentes y, en su mayoría, muy buena relación calidad-precio.

Imagine my delight to return to L’Aventure after taking my wife on our first date and meal in December 1980.

We have been going here off and on over the last 10 years since we had our flat in Hampstead,we always liked the atmosphere and the food , my wife ,who is French (which helps !) found the food a bit too salty for her tastes on occasion .

While their own brand of arrogance is still there, and it might not be your cup of tea, all the other ingredients are still there, and this remains a classy, elegant, reliable place serving delicious French food.It has appeal of a neighbourhood restaurant, relaxed atmosphere of a nice bistro, yet the service and food make you understand that there are no corners cut here, and that day after day, year after year they strive to deliver perfection, and succeed in doing it.While they tend to be arrogant, they are certainly not pretentious and not difficult, and ultimately they enjoy making you feel at home and hearing that you have enjoyed the visit and appreciated the meal.

L'Aventure is a small French restaurant in north London serving authentic cuisine. I had a three course dinner with my husband and every plate met our expectations. Bread was tasty, fresh and we had as much as we wanted. The entree was a salad of crab and avocado that was utterly delicious! My main was fish (catch of the day) and it was cooked perfectly. Being allergic to dairy, my husband had an olive oil dressing that was stunning - freshly pressed olive oil and sun dried tomatoes. The dessert was the French classic of Creme Brûlée and it didn't disappoint at all. All together outstanding food with great service. Compares well with our experience at Le Gavroche.

Many years ago when living in North London we would make the trip to l'Aventure for a special unassuming authentically French dinner out. All that is still provided but the quality and taste seems more subtly excellent and well presented. My fish was fresh and excellent: the lamb cutlets were suitably cooked yet still pink as requested and the apple tartelette was perfect. A pleasant Monday night surprise!

Went there to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday and L'Aventure delivered exactly what we were looking for. Excellent and attentive service, good food, we will come again.

At about 13.00 hrs today, we booked for dinner (a table for two) at 19.30 this evening.We arrived on time, were greeted and were shown to a table. Before we were given menus, we were sold a bottle of water The aperitif that was ordered then took ages to come and, one of my pet hates, the entire bottle of tonic had already been poured into the gin.The menu was hand-written and photocopied. This is fine provided that the handwriting is legible - it wasn't.The food was fine; the service was fine - if perhaps a little on the slow side (Perhaps not enough staff in the kitchen?) and the bill was not exceptional, but there was nothing memorable about it.And nothing to bring us back.

Lovely place been in business 30+ years same owner/management has a lot of regulars. Never had a bad meal. Outside terrace is lovely in the summer

Lovely setting and decor.The menu is in French, which can be a challenge - but this is a great way to ensure that staff engage with you and explain their dishes with enthusiasm; they welcome the opportunity.Wine choices are quality, at all price points. Strongly recommended. A consistently high standard and you will not be disappointed.

Family visit following match at Lords, for the first time July 16, having seen good web reviews. We booked table for 6 early evening prior to our visit. Sat down at 8.45 pm (Thursday) with it largely empty. It became more busy as evening proceeded. BUT - the service from arrival through to departure was very dis-appointing. Very formal, stiff, unwelcoming and distant - we repeatedly topped up our own wine glasses, and had to call waiter for additional wine - despite there appearing to be an abundance of staff present. The menu was unreadable! TRULY! We each had to ask the waiter to the table to both read out what ALL courses were and then explain what they were. It was drafted in a very "unique" writing style, which one might cynically assume staff assumed would add to the intrigue .. REALLY ??? It's a first for me and others. Sadly, the food on arrival continued the dis-appointment. Most courses were luke warm - infact my fish course was almost cold. Rather than complain, I left it a quarter eaten - I was not even consulted by staff if there had been an issue with it.Wine selection was good. Water at the table was always empty - despite trying to get staff to replace them. So, unlikely to go back. I personally came away with a feeling that being a relatively small restaurant, located in one of the more affluent areas of London (St John's Wood) , they may have sufficient demand from local residents/clients which services the owners needs - for visitors .... feeling lucky?

If you want good hearty French food served in a delightful setting, try this spot.A little off the beaten track but was recommended to us. Good wine selection too. Staff very attentive.

We visited L'aventure with friends and as usual had a great meal. Staff is very friendly and attentive and the food is excellent. Would highly recommend it. Only choice of two or three course menus and not cheap but worth it.
