Launay's in Newark and Sherwood

This was our first time at Launay’s and we will be visiting again very soon based on our Sunday Lunch visit. The food is delicious and we had the 3-course Sunday menu. Starters, Mains, Pudding, were all exceptional. If anyone from the restaurant reads this, please do let all your staff know that we were very impressed with the food and the service. This was on Remembrance Sunday. Even the background music that day made this a very special experience. Customer service at Launay’s is exceptional; we were proactively advised of a slight delay to our main meal and the waiting staff could not have done more for us. This is a real gem of a restaurant and has immediately become our favourite restaurant in Nottinghamshire. Thank you for making a Sunday Lunch visit very special indeed.

Wow. 🤩 This is a gorgeous, warm restaurant, with ample portions of food at an extremely reasonable and affordable price. Top Chef too. The Manager was a “little” upset it was 1.50 we arrived and reminded us so , which I accept we didn’t book and it was a Friday (today) so maybe they have a let’s not take bookings 10 minutes before the kitchen closes, unless booked. Do not let that put you off. The Manager who took over when he left and ladies serving were absolutely amazing. Met with girlie friends for a catch up. Made to feel very welcome by friendly staff. Drinks very reasonably priced, especially gin 😂 chose the burger from menu, was fabulous. Parmesan chips were delicious. We stayed for quiz night which was very entertaining & enthusiastic helped that I won the drinks raffle 👍

Only been here for drinks. ALL the staff are lovely and friendly, even when they are busy. Massive garden to the front with lots of tables and seating. Very modern/ upmarket place. Lovely outside in the summer. Thanks

Delicious food presented beautifully from a varied menu. Light and airy informal restaurant, attentive and friendly staff.

What does everyone ladies "bookclub" need in their life. Oh yes, a Launays. A group of women got together, had copious amount of gin, and oh my god we inhaled their skin on fries too, the fish finger sandwiches looked AMAZING too. The whole team were friendly, and enjoyed a laugh too, can't wait to visit again when I'm next in the area.

For many years the original Launays was our local restaurant to go to for a special meal or to celebrate occasions. Sadly the new Launays seems to lack the same finesse, and it no longer felt like we were going out for a special evening. We found the interior to be too bright and basic with the experience pub like with loud not typical fine dining restaurant music playing. Loose paper menus were just scattered on to the table for us by the server and there were quite a few items not available on the menu as apparently sold out since the previous day. The food we had was mixed between good & just ok We all enjoy different experiences and for some this change may be good, but for us sadly we’ve now lost somewhere to go locally for a special meal out.

Me and my wife decided to book this for our wedding anniversary and im sorry to say it was very average we arrived on a tuesday evening the menu was very limited to half a dozen things i ended up with fish and chips and ive had better from a standard chippy which is half the price. There was 4 people in and the wait between courses was to long.again 1st time for us we wont be returning very average food there are better places around for the price

5 barely warm Sunday lunches. Told staff about it, said they would pass onto kitchen, heard nothing back. Overcooked Yorkshire pudding (black) and lemon tart tasted of little. Was much better under previous owners.

Just took my wife out for wedding anniversary, we had the Chateaubriand to share it was absolutely lovely, the staff are brilliant and friendly ,great atmosphere with it being full would highly recommend

Amazing service by bev, always a good visit when Bev is working. Chateaubriand was amazing and we really enjoyed it alongside the stout pudding. Good value for money. Highly recommend.

The staff here are AMAZING. Guy and Kirsten were so welcoming, friendly and couldn't do enough to ensure we had a wonderful night at Launay's. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for somewhere to relax, feel at home and enjoy fantastic cocktails & delicious french cuisine.

Food was not up to the standard I was expecting. As a local, we had been to Launays previously. Well, below. Choice limited description deceiving on what actually got. Even the basic chips had issues. Nice to see you can just now go for a drink and not just meals, one positive. Staff is very pleasant.

Had lunch today with my daughter and sat outside in the lovely sunshine. The food was yummy. I had steak burger and she had the hot dog, so tasty😋 Bev was great and helped us choose. She was so friendly as usual. Guy was lovely too and kept our glasses topped up with Zinfandel Rose(which was very nice)🍷 We live in the village and visit Launays often. It's a real gem😊

This was our first visit since the change in ownership and we gave them a few months to settle in to avoid any hiccups. Although the food was lovely and the service started off well, this declined towards the end of the evening. We were asked if we wanted a dessert and we were unsure so it was left with us for a few minutes. As it was towards the end of the evening, we were finding it difficult to catch the attention of any staff to order even a coffee. Happy to pay a premium price for a premium experience but this fell short of the mark. Not such a special occasion for us after all...

Wow what an amazing meal, I've always been regular at Launeys and dont often leave reviews. However, the new management are just as fabulous as before. Guy was a lovely waiter, very attentive ensuring our drinks didn't get too low. The chaitebraid we had yesterday was insane and I regularly eat bistecca in Italy. I think yours was better. I'm so pleased seeing people dressed up coming to enjoy a lovely evening with fabulous food. The chilli coconut mojito is insane too.

Well what a come down in food since the previous owners. Tasteless nothing on the patch of Alan’s food. Just a completely different clientele. Not a special place like it used to be. Shame.

Can't fault this place. A lovely place for a beer, lunch, dinner or something even more formal, if that's you're thing! Well done to the new owners, and thanks too, to the old owners. A real success story all around. New weekly quiz on here too, every Thursday night.

Turned up for 2 for 1 cocktails on Saturday Evening around 7.30pm to be told they had stopped doing them. The staff and customers outside were all very unwelcoming. We used to love coming here but clearly the change in ownership has brought the service down. I will not be returning.

We’ve not been to Launay’s in a few years and I believe it’s changed hands in that time. I can’t complain about the food or service, as these were both great. The atmosphere that used to make this place so good though seems to be missing and the room we were in didn’t feel as special as it once did, with lots of large tables/dinners. Maybe I’m being harsh, it just feel like it was missing something. As I said the food and service were great.

We visit friends who live in Edwinstowe and usually try the different pubs in the area today we went to Launay’s for lunch and our first visit . What a delight . Food was lovely , service great and my husband loved the local beer. Perfect ….👍

Having visited before and now recently moved into Edwinstowe we decided to go back to our favourite spot in the area after holidaying here back in 2017 Upon arrival the restaurant was cosy and had been updated a lot since our previous visit. After speaking to the very nice man from behind the bar, we now knew that the business had changed hands and it was apparent throughout. Early Saturday evening and we were surprised how busy the restaurant was, easy choices for me and my wife we both went for mussels and Chatuebriand / both full of flavour and cooked impeccably! We didn’t have room for dessert, however the complimentary wine that comes with the sharing steak was enough for us, we finished it when we had strolled home! Fantastic evening - we will be back

I so wanted to be able to write a positive review about my visit but unfortunately our expectation really fell short. We had 2 fillet steaks, they both came with a sauce that was hardly lukewarm. The mushroom was still hard in the centre, it was barely cooked. My steak was meant to be medium but was still red and leaking blood in the centre. It was the chewiest fillet steak I’ve ever had. The chips were gorgeous and red hot thankfully. The service was good, lots of young but knowledgable and polite staff. I was really disappointed with the menu. A really small menu, even on a Saturday evening! The set menu only has 2/3 choices on it, which was a shame. All in all I am not sure we will rush to return, we are happy to pay a premium price but only for quality food cooked properly.

I came with my 11 Yr old daughter for some quality girly time early evening. I hadn't booked and it was packed but the lovely hostess managed to find us a table. Really lovely atmosphere with a mix of customers, well behaved children and dogs. We had the 3 course set menu, which was excellent value and very generous portions. Mussels to start which were all open, huge and delicate with a delicious home made roll. We both had rump steak, one rare and one medium rare. Melt in your mouth delicious with the mushrooms and green peppercorn sauce! One of the best steaks I've had! The jenga chips defeated us. I asked for dessert to take away, but this couldn't be done due to their presentations. I understood this when they came out. Rhubarb rum baba and chocolate and Guinness sponge. To say we were full, we almost inhaled them, the peanut brittle with the chocolate dessert and ganache was divine. I didn't try the cocktail menu but will definitely be back. The atmosphere was lively and relaxed in different areas, the staff were helpful despite being rushed off their feet. A fantastic gem that I'm fortunate to be local to.

Had a lovely lunch today with my dear friend Carol Richardson. The meal was delicious and well presented and the drinks again nothing short of perfection with Jayden serving the cocktails. Well looked after by very friendly staff.

I went with a friend this evening for a meal, whilst listening to music We weren't disappointed. Everything ran like clockwork. From the moment we entered the restaurant/bar, we were made to feel extremely welcome. We were seated at our table, where we were given a set menu for starters and main meals. We made our choices, enjoying a drink while we waited. My friend and I were chatting, but before we knew it our starters came out..... delicious! Onto the main course, and this was as lovely as the first course. Bev (the person who served us) asked if everything was to our satisfaction. It was. When we'd finished our meal, we went and sat in the 'snug' area to enjoy our drinks.. An 'Acoustic' evening was happening which made it all the better. Will definitely be back!

Lovely friendly staff. Food was excellent. (Sharing platter) and cocktails went down a treat! Have recommended to others and we will definitely return!

First and foremost the venue is lovely, and the staff were very welcoming and accommodating. Starters of fresh mussels for me and my partner had the scallops, both presented very well and super fresh. Main course was Venison for both of us which has to be one of the best meals I’ve had in the area. It came with beetroot, braised venison ragu, a bbq roasted onion and wild garlic. We couldn’t help but go for a cheese and biscuits and a sticky toffee for after and both were brilliant. As for the drinks, my cocktail was fantastic and my partner went for a glass of red, we soon after ordered a bottle of the Romanian pinot noir as it was recommended with the venison and did not disappoint. Worth a visit and no doubt we will be back.

First visit since the new owners took over and we were not disappointed. Staff are fantastic and friendly and the food was scrumptious. The tall gentleman behind the bar was especially pleasant as always. The only thing I would like to mention and it’s not a complaint but that the gravy has changed….it was still tasty but I did prefer it before so hopefully they take that on board and might make it the previous way again. We are looking forward to many more Sundays at your establishment.

We visited severally under the old management which was always excellent. We were so pleased when Launay’s reopened. We are vegetarian, and for our Sunday mains had the only veggie option which was two slices of broccoli tart (we think), accompanied with asparagus shoots, beans and potatoes. The main course size was more like a starter and we were left feeling hungry. For our child we chose macaroni cheese from the kid’s menu with garlic bread. Bizarrely this came unexpectedly served with strong horseradish sauce which our child wouldn’t touch. Why to put strong horseradish sauce in a kid’s dish is beyond us. We asked for them to remake it, which, to their credit, they did, but this time around it was more like a soup with too much liquid. It was served without the advertised garlic bread second time around. Our child ate half and left the rest. The only good thing about our visit was the beer, a Czech pilsner which was delicious. We decided not to chance the deserts and left hungry to finish eating elsewhere. Just to cap off our visit, we heard loud shouting coming from the kitchen as we returned to our car. We won’t be back. Such a disappointment.

Very disappointed! They took £20 deposit and we expected at least a two course lunch as per the web site! But we were the only customers and had to settle for either a pie or fish and chips! We had seen a positive article in the Southwell magazine and were motivated by a new restaurant offering an upmarket menu! Sadly they are worse than the old owners! Maybe if they didn’t demand and take a deposit they might get more customers. Seems they will not be around very long on the current strategy

Had a lovely experience today for our anniversary lunch. On entry we had balloons on the table which was amazing, especially as we hadn’t requested them. The staff were attentive at all times and the food was sooo tasty. Will definitely be returning for the food. Oh, and then the two for one cocktails were so very tasty. An added bonus

Was excited Launeys reopened again. Had the potato and asparagus salad for starters which was very disappointing especially for that price. This was followed by the chicken which was very tasty and filling Followed by the Eaton mess which was very nice. It was a shame that the venue was more or less empty by 930 ish which mend an earlier home time for us than normally

Oh dear, food wasn't good, burger buns burnt, chips not at all nice. Pie, pastry not cooked and poor filling. Mashed potatoes watery. Only one carrot. Presentation is great and maybe minimal, but then the flavours have to sing. I'm sorry, I will not be going again.

Booked in here for an evening meal, first time since changing hands. Nice friendly atmosphere and friendly staff. Food all very nice we had the pigeon starter, the monk fish main and chicken mains, and would recommend all. Puddings also nice , would definitely go again. Costs are reasonable for the standard of restaurant and we were made to feel welcome Thank you for making an enjoyable evening.

A fabulous meal at this excellent restaurant. The service was second to non and nothing was to much trouble. Because of a disability I had to ask if the chef could cut my steak into manageable pieces, this was done without any fuss. The food was beautifully cooked and very very tasty and at a reasonable price. Just trying to work out when my grandson and I can come again.

We went for dinner here last weekend new management new menu not a good experience. Not impressed at all poor customer service and long waiting times between courses,the quality of the food definitely wasn’t worth the wait we won’t be returning.

Launays has reopened and we were hoping the new owners would keep to the same standard of great food and service. We were not disappointed, everyone was happy and excelled in their service, most importantly the food was very good and tasty and I must mention the cocktails and the new upgraded drinks on offer . Heard lots of great ideas from the new owners, looking forward to our next visit .

Went for the reopening staff coped well with the amount of guests and the canopies were beautiful cant wait to go again soon was a great night with entertainment and many laughs .

First steak night with the new owners, Wow the food was amazing the pepper sauce I think I could of drank a pint of it 😂. Steak and starter was awesome.. The staff couldn't of done anymore. Beers I haven't tried before and the girls worked there way through the cocktail list.

I went for the steak night and had a lovely time. The food was fantastic I had the mushroom starter and it has to be one of the nices things I've eaten. The staff couldn't do enough for you. Will definitely be going back .xx

We had issues with every course. The scallop (singular) was barely warm and the sauce was cold. Not sure everything mentioned on the menu was on the plate but as we had to preorder weeks ago we weren't sure! The duck liver parfait tasted ok but the presentation was very poor. We all had the rump and belly pork, minus the advertised cep mushroom. The onion really wasnt caramelised and the chips were downright odd and served in a cold dish.The sharing desser barely fed one and the charcoal meringue was awful. The red wine was also served in white wine glasses as apparently they only have 2 red wine glasses! Sorry but not impressed and won't be returning. That's £249 my daughter won't see again!

These days I rarely comments on food and services but when I come across this one I need to. It was a cold Sunday afternoon and the street was quiet, both husband and I was tired and needed to have some food. We came across this restaurant and we just walk in. It's a beautiful warm and charming restaurant. The person that took our orders was smiling and happy. She allowed us to order one set lunch to share. When the food came with great presentation, clean, smooth and simply delicious!!! The mussel was so good with the taste of ocean and butter ! The Sunday Roast my husband clean the plate!! The dessert was smooth, silky and delicious! Good job Chefs!! If I come to this area again. I'll 100% dine here!!

Visited for a dine and comic night with my son and his partner for my birthday treat - food first followed by a good show. MC introduced five stand-up comedians, two then a break, then two more then a break, finally the star performance. All good laughs, friendly comics, really enjoyed the evening

Lovely setting and food was delicious. However meal was served separate to the vegetables and my husband had eaten his meal before the veg arrived and my meal was going cold . Appeared too busy had too many covers to cope with so service very poor. The staff did apologise but unfortunately spoilt our experience. Every effort was made however to bring fresh meal and veg but the food was delayed my husband had to eat his meat separate to his veg . Simply it was not good enough on this occasion

The restaurant has seating inside and outside (when the weather is good, it's lovely). Inside the restaurant it is very modern and welcoming. The menu offers a brilliant selection of meals that are amazing. If you haven't been there, you need to go. There are various nights with different entertainment. Murder mystery, comedy, and other events. The menu does change frequently, so you won't get bored with the food available. The staff there are wonderful and always have smiles on their faces, and a warm welcome is always given. I highly recommend this gem hidden in a beautiful area near Sherwood Forest. There is a car park to the rear of the restaurant with limited disabled parking. The entrance is wheelchair accessible as is the restaurant area.

This is truly a 5 star establishment. The food was perfectly made and delicious. The staff were extremely attentive and friendly. Will definitely be returning when in the area again.

The venue pitches itself as a gastro pub but there’s some basics it needs to get right. We visited last week. Our service was consistently poor, members of our party had to repeatedly get up to ask for drinks/sides/clean cutlery/bill and then Chase up Courses that hadn’t arrived for us all and the venue wasn’t massively busy. Stock up on drinks! to run out on a busy Friday night is poor, especially with such bad quality cocktails included. Chicken not cooked through, the mains were sent back there was no apology, replacement or explanation to us. On one of the party getting up to find and check with our server if we would get a replacement or substitution they said they’d check and we heard no more from him. Dessert arrived ok but not to my taste which is subjective- but the cocktails were very very, weak and tasteless. We were told by other diners at a Pub down the road we bumped into that they noticed shots of rum were going out with the cocktails (which we didn’t get) you’d think after mentioning the weak drinks we may have received these?! The menu was - a bowl of sweet potato chips & dip to share, a curried minced beef pastie. Uncooked chicken and rice and a slice of cheesecake… with 3 watery drinks so for £45 a head we felt very short changed. The bill never came so waited in line at the bar to pay, unbelievably no discount for all of our issues we’d raised throughout the night. Generally poor food/service throughout.

Really friendly family atmosphere, and we were made to feel super-welcome with our baby. We were thoughtfully given a table with plenty of space for a pushchair, and provided with a good highchair. Food is excellent; high quality, imaginative and generous - it's rare to get all three together! Starters were outstanding, good bottle of red, and overall really good value.

Service was excellent. Food quality was good but spoilt by not being hot. It was our first visit and we weren't in the best part of the restaurant. The best place seems to be the main room with a conservatory on the end. I'd want to book a table in there if I was going again.

We dropped in here for an impromptu decision after being in church and needing to eat. The menu was excellent and the food was even better. Complete gem of a place. Great value for top quality food. We will be returning!

My Brother booked the restaurant for my Birthday lunch. A lovely setting with friendly staff and the service was spot on. We all had a delicious Sunday lunch- fish and roasts. All cooked perfectly. We would absolutely recommend it and return again if we visited the area again. Thanks

Went for a Murder Mystery evening, three course meal included, we had a really fun evening, excellent atmosphere, a light hearted Cluedo murder mystery (which we failed to solve 🙄) and a good meal.

We had an amazing evening for the murder mystery event. The food was outstanding, as it was when we visited a few weeks ago. We will be back.

First visit today. Lovely front garden seating with beautiful plants and fruits plenty of parking to the rear.. I also spotted electric charging points for new cars. The entrance is just as pleasant as the garden. The decor inside is very taste fully done and pleasant on the eye. Now for the food, absolutely class 👌 everything was 100% fantastic if not more . Definitely be back in the future

A superb menu and fantastic service. Five of us had different starters and main courses that were outstanding. The choice of wine was reasonable. It was a wonderful evening and great value for money.

Well above average service and nicely done food for mid range prices. Six adults and two kids, everyone really happy with quality, quantity and presentation off fixed price 2 or 3 course weekend menu. We drove off site from nearby Center Parcs for a change, a lucky find and if we lived nearer we’d be back soon.

Food and service absolutely fabulous but special mention to whoever decided to serve Tiramisu like that. It doesn't look like a traditional Tiramisu but it has all the flavours and more. Best I've ever tasted either here in UK or in Rome and Florence.

We went for the festive menu on new years Eve. The good was amazing, the service was great and the price for 3 courses was brilliant. We will be returning again!

Delicious! This place feels underrated, it’s really strong especially compared to relatively local competition and delivers some great, elegant, well presented tasty dishes. Think fine dining for some, but without unnecessary faff and with more accessible dishes on the menu. The service is friendly and classy - we’d visit more if we were closer.

Highly recommend coming here if you want a unique dining experience. Incredible menu, and the murder mystery was excellent fun. We've found our new date night spot!
