A fabulous hidden gem nestled in the sleepy village of Stonethwaite. Delicious food , fabulous service and very friendly staff ! The inn is very interesting with lots of ancient artefacts too .

I was a guest at Stonethwaite campsite what we have been stopping at for the last couple of year's, but this year after coming into this bar with the warden of the campsite for drinks and food, the attitude of the staff to myself was very disgusting because we were stopping on campsite, they didn't want or custom. This lovely country pub used to very nice and friendly. No what I no know after one of the staff threatened the warden he was going to stab him, I will never introduce anyone to come to this bar again, if your after a friendly bar to go to go to Yew Tree pub at seatoller.

I stopped here on a walk, as the Inn is clearly literally at the "end of the road". It's tucked away in pretty Borrowdale, so walking and cycling are the best ways to reach it. There is a bus service to Stonethwaite but I believe you have to walk along the access road from the bus stop to the Inn which is right at the far end of Stonethwaite hamlet. I was walking on the footpath between Stonethwaite and Rosthwaite, so I only stopped for a cuppa in the beer garden - can't comment on rooms. Service was quick. The second photo is Stonethwaite beck taken from Stonethwaite bridge near the Inn, the third photo shows the Borrowdale fells, taken from the footpath beside Stonethwaite beck - a pleasant easy walk that can start or finish at the Inn. Parking is limited in Stonethwaite, best to visit on foot or bike!

Deciding not to stop and eat in Keswick we thought we’d drive on and hope we’d find a traditional country pub to have a light lunch in. Eventually found signs describing a country inn and found ourselves here. We received a welcoming greeting and duly took a menu; we found little choice and what was there seemed rather pricey - sandwiches with a few crisps £10; a bowl of chips (fries) £7 - add cheese for a further £2; hot food such as fish and chips or a pie meal around £20. We settled on sharing a sandwich and chips; these were served quickly, nicely presented but nothing out of the ordinary and we felt it overpriced for what it was. If you’re walking in the area I’m sure this is a welcome spot to stop, but if driving it’s not somewhere I’d seek out again.

Four of us had a late Sunday Roast here on 24/3. We had a long walk up and down the Langstrath Valley so pretty hungry by the time we arrived for lunch. The staff were extremely accommodating, the food was superb and the location and interior were excellent. We had a selection of roasts and all of them were brilliant, more than enough food, even for hungry walkers. We would definitely return and would not hesitate in recommending the Langstrath Inn. Thank you.

It had been a long time so very happy to return! During a recent stay we were able to squeeze in three visits :) Very well placed at the end of a Borrowdale hike and and if you have to resort to a car (elderly family and driving rain) there is ample parking/easy access. We called in for a drink or two, no issue with mud and damp dogs, very welcoming staff. We also booked an evening meal with family members - excellent food and service. Our vegetarian was well catered for also. Last visit was with elderly relatives, again warm welcome and a good experience thank you. We booked for our meal as if residents decide to eat in the public bar instead of the restaurant it can get a bit busy.

Appalling attitude from a member of staff (Barman, Bold head, tattoos). First we asked for an expresso, he refused to make it so a lady behind the bar kindly made this for us. He then went on a rant about the campsite close by labelling everyone who stayed there a “drug addict” and he hated the custom from anyone from the campsite, the bar should just be for locals and people who stay there. I found his tone and attitude disgusting so much so we left and ended up not eating at the pub. It would be such a shame if the national trust do take over the fields and end up not allowing any campers in the area…wouldn’t be good for business as I’m sure the “drug fulled” campers help with business.

Second time we have been here and the experience has been the same both times. Beautiful food and even nicer staff! Came in for Sunday lunch with the kids. We ordered 2 roasts, one lamb, one beef and chicken goujons. All of the food was served in a timely manner, nice and hot. Janine who looked after us was gorgeous. So friendly amd genuinely interested in having a nice conversation. We ordered desserts after, my daughter recommends the sorbet. The apple crumble was also a hit! Overall lovely experience. What a find! We spent two evenings here, having dinner and drinks either side of walking up Sca Fell Pike. First of all the staff and management were lovely, friendly people and did everything they could to cater to our needs. Genuine and down-to-earth they made it feel like a home from home. Secondly the food was fantastic for the very reasonable prices and we ate 2 courses each day. Finally the Borrowdale real ale was one of the best I've had. All in all I'd highly recommend a visit.

Booked for 7pm for dinner hoping to have awake before hand to make a pleasant evening. Typical heavy Cumbria rain meant we cut the walk short and turned up early. The staff made us very welcome and accommodated us and made the whole evening very enjoyable. The food is good “pub grub” prepared to a high standard. We will be back again hopefully on a drier evening.

Jesus Christ where to begin. Food - Expensive but for a reason. Incredible, cannot recommend highly enough. I had a ribeye steak, which was perfectly cooked, with a mind blowing peppercorn sauce, a huge portion of homemade chips and beautifully cooked tomatoes and a flat mushroom. Guinness was an 8/10 and a huge selection of great single malt scotch. Don’t let the price deter you, this is a hidden gem.

Oh dear, I have never come a less hospitable pub in the lake district. Unable to serve 6 portions of chips due to being "short staffed" but still able to serve meals. We ate Sunday dinner 2 days ago which was average at best and certainly overpriced at £20 for a steak pie £18 for sausage and chips. Went back this evening just for a snack but rudely dismissed. I would reccomend any other pub in borrowdale ahead of here. Certainly the scafell Hotel was much more accommodating.

We phoned ahead on the day, and secured a table for 18:45 from the helpful waiter. There is a good carpark just past the inn, to the right. We were given lovely fresh bread with pesto with our drinks. I had garlic prawns to start; super tasty, and I mopped up the butter and herbs with the bread. We both had roast lamb for our main course; amazing tender lamb, perfectly done to pink perfection, with great greens, colcannon mash and black pudding.

We visited The Langstrath while staying near Keswick and it was the best meal we had during our 2 week stay in England which included a week in London. The steak and ale pie was packed with tasty meat; the sea bass was a very generous portion and delicious and the stuffed chicken was succulent with crispy seasonal vegetables. The service was excellent - big thank you to Dan . Definitely the place to eat if you are in this area.

I have come to the Langstrath for years as a regular to the Lake District. I have always rated it with lovely food and friendly staff. More recently the prices have become ridiculous. last week I came and I felt £20:75 for a steak pie Hefty… but there was a good amount of steak and it was a proper pie… it was yummy so I paid. Tonight I had sea bass. Now I have always been led to believe a sea bass is filleted into two pieces. I was shocked that for £19:50 I got half a portion (one small fillet) and I walk away hungry and disappointed. I certainly wasn’t going to pay £9.25 for a pudding

Visited on a Saturday night. We arrived early for our dinner reservation so sat in the bar which has a nice atmosphere including a log fire. The restaurant was well presented and clean. The service was fine, we requested to eat earlier and so that was accommodated, the lady that served us was polite and welcoming but I wander if she could of done with a bit of help when the dining room got busier. This would of been of been a 4 star review were it not for the food, which was a little uninspiring - we both had the smoked chicken and duck which was tasty but didn’t seem to be homemade, our mains of steak were well cooked and tasty with a nice Diane sauce but the chips were so chunky they were almost not cooked and certainly not crispy, and the steamed veg needed a dressing or seasoning.

We were staying about a mile away from this pub / restaurant but wanted to try after reading so many positive reviews. We tried to call to book a table but couldn't get through so we gambled with walking over and were greeted by the warming lights of a pub in a cold february night. When we arrived we were told we may have a short wait for a table as they were reserved however, the staff were brilliant in getting us a table between bookings which we did not mind moving to accomodate. They did offer us a table in the restaurant however, as we'd been hiking for most of the day we didn't feel appropriatly dressed. I ordered the steak pie which was £17 but the portions were fair and very tasty. It was reassuring to see some veggie and vegan options on the menu also which I would try next time. The staff were fantastic, couldn't do enough for us and very chatty. I can't wait to return her next time I'm in the lakes.

Having stumbled across this immaculately presented place not too far from where we were staying for a few days, we honestly thought we had found a hidden gem and a place where we would likely have a couple of meals and a few drinks. Well, we did try but finally gave up and have no intention of going back. We should have got the message on the first visit when we called in for a drink at lunchtime - the reception was frosty at best and when I asked to see the evening menu, wow, talk about a harsh response. Anyway, we ventured further afield that night so didn’t return that day but chose to give it a go for dinner the following evening. The frosty reception had clearly not been a one off at it was still there, healthy and well. Upon ordering a bottle of wine, I was made to feel like I was an inconvenience and when I plucked up the courage to ask the old goat waitress for a menu, all she could do was hit me with a barrage of negativity telling me how long we would have to wait. Guys, you have a lovely place and your food looked good but expensive for what it was. Your attitude stinks, you seriously have a hell of a lot to learn about manners, your customer service is shocking and you are a perfect example of a Lakeland business that takes tourists for granted. Hey ho, your mistake - we won’t be back, we will make sure we promote this terrible experience and perhaps, just perhaps, this review will make you take a close look at how you conduct yourselves in the future.

The Langstaff is a beautiful country inn in a breathe taking setting in the amazing Borrowdale valley. We arrived for a three night stay for my birthday and were met by very friendly staff who quickly booked us in and confirmed our table in the dining room for the evening. We were in room 3... An attic room. Our first impression was that the room was " cute" however this was short lived . Both myself and my husband( who is 6ft 3) I am 5 ft 3 spent all weekend banging our heads on the beams and slopping roofs in the bedroom and bathroom!!! As for the bathroom...you couldn't get into the bath unless you bent yourself in half ...you needed to be a contortionist, and you were unable to use the shower as a stand up shower it could only be used if you sat in the bath!!! It needs to be noted too that bedroom 3 is adjacent to the staff quarters, not a problem as the staff are all lovely people, however they work late and obviously need to have relaxation time after work...therein lies the problem....too-ing and fro-ing outside the room, opening and closing their door, moving around and muffled voices, all disturbing until past midnight!! If we had known the room was an attic room and small and located next to the staff living quarters we would have requested another room,we also feel that it is over priced for it's size compared to other rooms in the hotel. The food is excellent in the restaurent and we ate there twice and were not disappointed . All in all The Langstath is to be recommended and we would stay again just not in room 3 .

I have been thinking about this review for a couple of weeks. The restaurant building is charming. The location is very good. The kitchen is top notch. The issue is the flies. Lots and lots of flies. Unbelievable numbers of flies. Like 40 or so around us at all times. Now the day we were there was warm. And, as the wait staff pointed out, we were in the country. That being said, we had been in the area for a week and never experienced anything like this when it comes to flies. Now for my suggestions. On this warm day the front door was wide open and every other window was sealed tight. Having lived for many years in the Deep South of the US, I know the solution to hot, stagnant air and bugs is to keep the air moving. Thus the ubiquitous ceiling fans throughout the South. I suggested to our waitress, who seemed to rule the room with an iron fist, that she should open the windows to allow a cross breeze. I received a withering look of disapproval but she did grudgingly open one back window about an inch. Needless to say, it was not effective. In the future, I encourage them to try the cross ventilation technique instead of bottling all the flies and heat in a closed off space. Perhaps the flies are not an issue on cooler days in which case I am sure it is a lovely experience. On warmer days, I would suggest avoiding the windows (if they are closed) as that is where the flies tend to concentrate. Once again, an otherwise very nice restaurant. I do encourage a more enlightened approach to ventilation.

Hundreds of flies were swarming and often landing on our food (great lamb shank, but dry steak and ale pie and hard-as-rock steak).

Initially told we could eat in the bar area or outside with our dogs when we went to order we were told we could not eat in the bar area and there were no tables and they could not serve us outside “because they have two new members of staff and it would all go pear shaped” we explained we were backpacking had nothing for a meal but they just said sorry the next pub is a mile away

We had heard about this place so diverted off the end of our hike to pass by. It’s a quaint little place and what especially appealed to me was the notice asking people to turn off their phones or put them to silent. A reminder that we can chat to each other instead. The decor is neat, tidy and well done and despite someone getting teased about how brave he was for ringing the bell for service, the lady behind the bar was absolutely lovely. Given its location I will definitely be looking into staying here too in the future.

Visited here on a busy friday night, and despite not getting to the pub till after 8.30 pm the staff were very friendly and we were able to order food. Every member of my group commented how good the food was - I had steak & ale pie with really nice home made chips and a good selection of veg. The pie was clearly freshly made with good chunks of meat and nice pastry.

I rang up at lunch time on the Bank Holiday Sunday and was told yes we could have a table, we wanted to eat early as both parties had long journeys. We arrived early and were the first in the dining room. It was a lovely room and at that time very quite.

What a shame, potentially a fantastic Outlet in a brilliant location. We initially had a couple of drinks on the Saturday evening over the recent bank holiday weekend, we sat outside with our drinks and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere.

Advised to dine here by local B&B; where we were staying on C2C. Some of the best advice we received. Lovely Spring evening, sat out in beer garden and met fellow walkers from USA, SA, Canada, Australia and Lancashire!!!

We had toiled up and down the valley with a cold wind nipping at our hands and feet, so were glad to be sitting down inside the inn with a log fire next to us. The soup was white white and celeriac, not a combination I have had before, and extremely tasty. It was accompanied by a less successful stack of crayfish on avocado. The crayfish were still on the edge of cold and the sauce hard to identify. My husband's lamb burger was very meaty and came on a brioche with huge onion rings and hand-cut chips.

My wife and I popped in to the Langstrath Inn for an evening meal on a Friday night. Not the easiest place to find on a pitch black narrow country lane but found it eventually. There is a car park across the road to the pub. We were greeted by friendly locals and made our way to the bar area, (there is a dedicated restaurant area but the small lounge bar with its wood burning fire gives the place it's cozy feel).

We booked well ahead for an evening meal - it's rightly very popular, and we had an excellent meal in the pub. It's quite a superior "gastro pub" menu, and that may not be to everyone's tastes or wallets - not really a place for a family on a budget looking for a meal, and it's not cheap - £3.25 for a side order of chips, and £6.95 for a chocolate dessert. But the food was imaginative and very good, and efficiently served by friendly staff.

Ive Ben coming to Borrowdale for 17 years now and this is still the top place to eat and to stay. Only here for a meal this time (the hotel was fully booked - that’s the downside of lots of people loving it: it’s often full now), but the food’s great and well-presented, there’s a decent short wine list and several good ales on hand pumps, and Guy and Jaqui and the team are as warm and welcoming and efficient as always. Good atmosphere for an evening meal too, whether in the dining room (we were treated to one of the best tables this time, right by the far picture window) or in the very cosy bar near the open fire.

We went there on our coast to coast walk for a guaranteed quality meal as we have been there before. They didn't let us down with the meal which just had that taste of well prepared and well sourced food. It's not pretentious or posh but quality and good staff. It's not cheap either but with your second pint in and the fires blazing it doesn't seem to matter

We had our evening meal booked here whilst on our Coast to Coast trek it was a lovely country pub set in an idyllic location. On arrival street parking is limited I didn't see a dedicated car park but it was dark so may have missed it having been dropped off in a van. A warm welcome awaited us from the staff the bar area had a really good atmosphere and it was lovely and warm after a day on the hill! We went through to the restaurant area where our large table was reserved it was spacious and a lovely room. The menu had some good options on it with a separate specials menu as well, gluten free people are also catered for. I chose to have the goats cheese salad to start which was very good then the rump steak for main which I had medium, again cooked excellently. There was a decent selection of desserts too which also were very good quality, my wife said the coffee was also excellent as she had a decaf. Free wifi was available which was great as between courses it allowed me to sort my photos out from the day saving me time at the B&B later. Based on this experience I'd be happy to recommend a visit to this place and if I'm in the area again I'll be back.

This is a wee gem of a country Lakeland Inn which is set in just the most idyllic location at the foot of the Borrowdale valley in Stonethwaite. The staff are ever so friendly and always ready to have a wee chat with you. There is a great choice of five real ales and many whiskies ... depending on your tipple. But the best aspect is the fantastic choice of quality food. We stopped for one evening and it was so good that we decided to return the following evening. You receive homemade bread before your dinner. You can not fail to be impressed with everything the Langstrath has to offer.

We've been meaning to call here for some time but the other Sunday actually did as we were passing. The menu was a little limited and perhaps a bit more expensive than the norm, and quality a bit below the norm. We received a friendly welcome. The décor was rustic, but not exactly rustic chic!It was Ok, but certainly not worth a detour, but very handy for the nearby campsite should you be staying there.

What a lovely restaurant with fabulous food and great staff. We were staying close by and had seen great reviews about the restaurant so we had to try it….not just once but two nights in a row it was that good. On the first night my husband had lamb shoulder which was cooked to perfection and fell off the bone, I had salmon and prawns which were equally as good. The second night it was seafood platter for my husband and sweet and sour chicken for me. Both meals were very good and it was great to have so much to choose from. It was a pleasant change to be able to choose the accompaniment to the meals rather than just chips with salad or veg. The staff were very attentive and polite. All in all it was a great experience and would definitely recommend this restaurant.

The festive lunch was ordered by all. Firstly the food for the most part was enjoyed by all 4 pax. However service was lacking both in care and in speed. A set 3 course lunch took 2.5 hours to complete. Dishes were delivered to table without suitable cutlery, serving tray left on the table, 3 pax finished their desserts before the 4th pax received theirs. Waiting staff had to be called for as they passed by, as all, except one, just ignored checking the table meal progress. It appears there is a shortage of staff, but in that case restrict the number of reservations to a level which can be coped with. That said the Brasserie was only a quarter occupied.
