Lake Isle Restaurant in Rutland

So went to celebrate my birthday which was a few days earlier. From the moment we walked in the atmosphere was friendly and welcoming and the surroundings comfortable. The staff were friendly and provided excellent service throughout. The food was beautifully presented at each course. We ate cheese brûlée and scallops for starters and the fillet of pork and guinea fowl for mains. Each course was a feast for the eyes and taste buds. Although at the higher end price wise we thoroughly enjoyed our fine dining experience. Go on treat yourself or spoil a loved one and dine at The Lake Isle!

For lunch on our return after more than a decade we found the set menu was short, inexpensive, tasty and very good value. Starters of Roasted pumpkin and squash salad and Crab risotto both had enlivening extra ingredients. Roast Breast of chicken was the only non-veggie main, but it was excellent. Guests at other tables seemed to be enjoying the Carrot and sage wellington. We had eaten so well that we weren’t tempted by the £4 addition for desserts on top of the £24 for 2 courses. The selection of wines by the glass was adequate and of good quality. Super service throughout. We shouldn’t have left it so long between visits, and will return much sooner.

This place is just awesome. Friendly professional boutique hotel. Food is exquisite Beautifully presented obviously with a lot of love and attention to detail.

Chose the Sunday roast lamb. It came just with ratatouille style veg but no potatoes. I was still hungry at the end of it. My friend had the beef which was piled high with Yorkshire pud, potatoes and other veg which was too much for even his healthy appetite. I finished a full 20 mins before he gave up on his. I complained next day but wasn’t offered anything to compensate

We did the dinner, bed & breakfast package which financially is well worth doing. The menu has a good amount of choice and they were able to make changes where requested - for example my partner had the beef but does not like Stilton so they just did him a peppercorn sauce. We had three course and they were all delicious. The amount of food suprised us, big portions which is often not the case at fine dining type restaurants. Needless to say we were stuffed by the end! The service was impeccable, it is clear that staff have all been trained to a high standard. All staff we experienced were efficient, professional and welcoming. A lovely meal and fantastic stay. Staying and eating at The Lake Isle was an absolute delight. It really is an example of best in class, in this case ‘Restaurant with Rooms’. The freshly refurbished room was calm & comfortable, mercifully free of the tendency to be ‘quirky’ too often found in ‘boutique’ establishments. The highlight was the modern bathroom which was vast with a large walk in shower and bathtub which we put to good use. Given the size it was odd that there was only one basin and some hooks would have been handy but full marks for effort. Supper in the restaurant was exemplary. So nice to be given complimentary bread to start, a rarity these days. There was an excellent offer of interesting and imaginative dishes; the scallops and guinea fowl were outstanding. The ubiquitous fish&chips/burger cliches nowhere to be seen which sets the tone for serious dining. Most impressive was the generous portion sizes and fair pricing. Bravo all round. The only slight mis-step was the Cranachan pudding which bore no resemblance to the Scottish classic. I must make special mention of the breakfast. It’s a proper offer of real breakfast food; my wife had kippers (delicious) and I had the Full English which was superb and included Fried Bread! Shame on me for forgetting how marvellous this traditional accomplishment is. I have now resolved to reintroduce it to my home repertoire. The staff were universally polite and friendly, even when dealing with ‘unfortunate‘ behaviour from other guests. For example, while at breakfast a couple came into the dinning room, he wearing a baseball cap indoors (uncouth) and she carrying a large disposable coffee cup bought elsewhere (disrespectful). Not a hint of well deserved disapproval from the waiter who demonstrated the good manners that they would have done well to learn from. Thank you so much to all at The Lake Isle; we shall return.

Haven’t been here for many years and on this day we visited for lunch. The whole experience was most rewarding and a real highlight of our visit to Uppingham. We both eat from the fixed price menu. It was wonderful food and good value.

I had lunch at The Lake Isle again today. The food was a taste extravaganza! I had a tasty salad with herb dressing and pomegranate seeds to start. The main course was lentil and sweetcorn croquettes with crispy chickpeas, cauliflower hummus, and kale. It was perfection on a plate and all the flavours complemented each other beautifully. The chef is a genius! I could happily eat it every day! The dessert was strawberries and ice cream. Delicious!

Have had the most amazing time at The Lake Isle. We stayed overnight and the service has been amazing. The staff are so caring and very friendly. The food was so delicious and so well presented. The room was so cosy and relaxing. Would definitely recommend and visit again soon.

I didn't have the pleasure of staying there but did have the wonderful experience of dining here one evening. I couldn't fault any one component throughout the evening. The staff were well presented, polite and friendly. The restaurant dining area was bustling with the the hubbub of happy and appreciative diners. What stood out particularly in the restaurant was their decision not to over cram the floorspace with tables to maximise the amount of covers, but have chosen to serve the correct amount of diners to consistently deliver impeccable food and superb service. A very impressive selection was available and all of it was of the highest quality. I take my hat off to the whole team as you made a first night a very pleasant one.

Delighted to have recently found the Lake Isle in Uppingham. Great location close to the market square. Approached through a rear courtyard, it’s worth a visit. Relaxed atmosphere and lovely food. Highlights included the panko scallops (cooked to perfection) and also the sea bass with samphire and asparagus.

We were a bit concerned, having seen the Lake Isle in local magazines, that the food and people would be a bit pretentious. They were not. The food and service were first class and enjoyable as a family. Thanks for a good time. We will be back soon.

I was today in this restaurant for my friend's 60th birthday. I will write this review regarding one outstanding dish only " the mushroom parfait". I was not expecting this at all, I thought it would be something crunchy, and a bit like a heavy paste but it was the opposite. It reminded a restaurant in Barcelona " El Bulli " in which you could experiment molecular gastronomy. This parfait was so light and so well balanced. One flavour was not domineering another flavour. It reminded me a restaurant in my town ( Paris ). Yes, yes, yes the other dishes were very good but this one was just from another level.

The best restaurant in Rutland. Food is outstanding. Service is outstanding. The last time I experienced eating out with this quality was in a Michelin starred restaurant in France. All I can add is complements to the chefs and kitchen staff and the front of house staff. Made my day.

My husband and I have stayed at The Lake Isle more or less every year since around 2003. The reasons we keep returning year after year are listed below:- The attention to detail is second to none here from the staff, the food, rooms ambience etc. The investment that the owners have put into this business is incredible, particularly after the ravages of covid to the hospitality sector. We have travelled all over the UK both on work and business, staying at various hotels along the way and without a shadow of a doubt The Lake Isle stands out far and above the rest. The owners are so attentive, yet never overpowering, it is the most relaxing place to visit. Finally we cannot believe that this establishment is no longer in the Michelin guide book and fully intend to convey our dismay to Michelin .

We’ve eaten here several times and it’s always been very good. Today it surpassed itself. We had the Eat put for less menu’ and spoilt for choice and quality of the food, service and ambience.highly recommend, excellent value for price. will definitely return.

We had the £27.00 lunch menu . We were served olives and bread before the meal and posh choc with the coffee afterwards. Each plate of food was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious . Would highly recommend excellent service and menu .Fantastic flower shop next door .

We had a wonderful 3 course lunch and were really impressed, it ticked every box for us. The £27 lunch menu was great value for 3 courses and the food was as delicious as it was beautiful….the prawn and crab tartlet was amazing! We were given olives and bread to nibble too which was a nice little bonus. Service was excellent and it’s in a tastefully decorated setting. Definitely worth a visit and uppingham is a lovely town to have a stroll around too.

Everything about our lunch was superb - the food, wine, service and atmosphere. We had the Lunch for Less menu - three courses for £27 - which we thought was excellent value, given the quality of the food.

We were fortunate to get a table for Christmas Day lunch. Everything was perfect from the polite, welcoming and efficient staff to the most delicious meal. Every course was enjoyable with so much attention to detail. The atmosphere was warm with the room and tables decorated beautifully., the whole visit was a Christmas treat.

I found this little gem of a place whilst wondering around the ‘Leading Restaurants’ website and we finally made it here tonight. I have to say the Christmas dinner menu offered plenty of great choices. The service from the initial welcome has been warm and friendly. I suspect we will be back in the new year..

Visited here at the weekend for a nice meal, and that's exactly what I got. I wasn't here too long but enjoyed the time that I was. I felt it slightly pricey for what I had, hence the reflection in my star rating. Will visit again with my though. Thank you all.

The Lake Isle serves consistently great food with amazing flavours, as a vegetarian I never leave disappointed, it’s great to visit somehwere that isn’t just serving risotto or gnocchi! Staff are always very friending and welcoming…..

We went to stay here on a Dinner Bed @ Breakfast basis. Firstly their staff are top notch, very polite & helpful, we dealt with Jack and from the initial booking to paying our bills the next day he was brilliant. Our meal in the evening was fantastic a genuine cut above 99per cent of other restaurants, beautifully served in a lovely dining room, it really was excellent. Our rooms were very good and clean with everything we could wish for. Overall a great experience - thank you.

Excellent food, the best I’ve had for a while, where it’s nice to dress up and and feel like your having a special night out with some top quality fine dining. The staff couldn’t have been better , always felt relaxed but looked after.

This proved to be well beyond our expectations and we’ve been a few times over the years on our days out to the nearby Eyebrook Reservoir for birdwatching trips. The food was superb - of the highest technical quality and as tasty as can be; the service was second to none; and the dining room itself is simply perfect - quiet, comfy and spacious. Wow.

This is the sort of restaurant we would typically head for to celebrate a birthday or the like but, as we were just on holiday in the area and looking for something a little less fancy (or indeed expensive), Sunday lunch seemed a good compromise. I booked it a fortnight ahead and duly noted that anyone who doesn't have the courtesy to cancel in a timely manner is charged for the loss of the table - so it must be good - although in the event it was a very quiet service (and the atmosphere rather lacking as a result). All decent restaurants give you fresh bread to nibble whilst awaiting your starter and this was no exception, save that I found the white mini-loaf tasteless and well below par. I can't remember what my wife had for her first course but my stilton brûlée was very good, although when the plate was collected I did proffer my opinion that the textures were wrong and the dish would be improved if the rock-hard almond biscotti were substituted by Melba toast... Then came the mains. The beef was supposed to be the highlight of the meal and we thought we were in for a treat, but it was so tough that I couldn't even cut it. I explained my difficulty and was duly given a serrated knife instead, which solved the technical issue but did nothing for the beef itself. In true British manner I made the mistake of persevering rather than complaining, but I didn't enjoy it. The veg wasn't much better, being too fancy for it's own good, eg a beer-braised carrot. For this class of establishment it was in my view a 2* main at best. In the interests of science I couldn't resist trying the egg custard for dessert, and the one here was, in itself, excellent. As with the starter however, IMHO the dish was marred by it being accompanied by other elements that simply didn't belong together, including a very dominant sorbet. Needless to say we wished we'd chosen somewhere else - but then we'd have been none the wiser!

We were lucky enough to get a last-minute cancellation and were very impressed by the food, service and rooms. Will definitely be coming back again.

Our second time here and it didn’t disappoint! The menu is really interesting (I’d never come across Camembert creme brûlée before!), and the food is delicious and very reasonably priced. Wines by the glass worked best for us as we were all eating different meals. And the room upstairs felt like we were being served in a very high class private dining room… very special and lovely… we will be back…

On my wife’s Birthday the family had organised a visit to the Restaurant. This was my first visit to this particular place however I had heard good comments previously. The meet and greet was very polite, service was exceptional- not overbearing but attentive and there if you needed. The food was exceptional, beautifully cooked and presented…. Made her Birthday memorable…. Thank you …. I shall return. And yes I would fully recommend it, in fact I have already and friends have booked.

We stayed at The Lake Isle for a couple of nights and ate at the restaurant on the Friday night and what a treat! The food was delicious and the staff were so very attentive. The steak was perfectly cooked to my husbands request and my chicken dish was adapted to my gluten free diet without any loss of taste or presentation. Puddings were incredible and, although we were the last in the restaurant , we were not rushed or hurried out but left to finish our coffee and tea in peace. Lovely hotel; we hope to. be back.

Xmas lunch for my wife and self. We were in upstairs dining room nicely separated from other diners. Staff as enthusiastic and willing as ever despite masks. Food was excellent, and as well as tasting good was beautifully presented. A must! Just hope they survive the lockdowns lack of hotel guests etc

We visited recently for a birthday dinner, hadn't been for quite a few years but the food is just as good still and great service. It's a really nice place for a special meal. Our only criticism was that it was very quiet in there at times as it wasn't very busy and they could really do with turning up the background music a bit (it was on but very very faint!)

I can not recommend this place enough, fantastic food, fantastic service and a lovely atmosphere. The panko scallops were a dream, the duo of duck perfectly cooked and the triple cooked chips should be termed a potato each! Absolutely the best meal I’ve ever had.

This is my favourite restaurant at the moment.It's quite small, but by clever positioning of the tables, you don't feel crammed in or too close to fellow diners.The menu is interesting and I always find something nice to eat. The wine list is also good.It has a relaxing pleasant atmosphere and I always come away with a smile.

A lovely birthday meal. We visited last night and had such a great meal. Our waitress was so friendly and very attentive without it being too much. The food was to die for. And although the portions are perhaps a little smaller than the average, we both still left comfortably full and that was without a dessert. Will definitely be coming back!

Nicely spaced out and all the safety features in place. Very pleasant welcome and such happy and excellent staff. The food and service are at relais and chateau levels. My Somerset goats cheese brûlée was perfect as was my fillet of scotch beef with triple cooked chips and watercress salad. Just enough room to share the assiette of toffee to finish a great meal. First visit post lock down, 6 of us, in the snug upstairs which is furnished to a very high standard! We all had a fantastic evening from the service to the food and the wine. There was a lovely buzz about the place for a week night. With refreshed decor too, this still remains one of the top foodie hot spots in Rutland.

Since we last reviewed this restaurant (when we thought it had gone down a bit) it has clearly regained its quality. The socially distanced dining area is very safe and the staff know their menu well. Food presentation is superb and the wine list offers very good choices by the glass as well as their huge cellar. Every dish was just as it should be - full of interesting flavours and subtle sauces - and you should leave space for some outstanding desserts. This place remains well worth a journey and booking is essential.

We had such a lovely 3 course meal to celebrate our anniversary. The service was amazing and the food was out of this world. I had the fillet steak and my husband had the lamb. Both were cooked perfectly. I would definitely return and would recommend to anyone looking for somewhere special to celebrate a special occasion.

I have just dined at Lake Isle I felt compelled to review. Working away your own is tuff. Having to speak to family through FaceTime and dining alone. But WOW this place certainly turned the situation into a perk!!!What a gem of a find, situated in the beautiful countryside village of Uppingham, East Midlands.
