We ate both breakfast and dinner during our second stay at this hotel. Dinner is served in the Dining Room. There was a good varied menu that enabled us to easily select options for our two nights. We are unaware how frequently the menu changes, but a third night may not have been quite so easy. The food quality and service was excellent. Breakfast in the conservatory provides a very wide choice and is a mixture of buffet style and table service. Again the food and service is excellent.is

This is a fabulous hotel - lovely welcoming feel with a traditional, high quality vibe and decor. If you owned a country house this is how you’d like it to be! Great staff - so helpful, really great food and lovely rooms. The hotel is set in fabulous wooded grounds with its own lake. The spa and indoor pool are in a modern stand alone building beside the lake, which is stunning. The best hotels are because of the staff and the staff at Lake Country House were really fantastic. Worth the journey.

It was nice. Staff very attentive. Still you get a glass of water which has never been chilled...tables could do with a fresh flower, or at least the dining room could have a vase of something.. Beautiful white table cloths. Dinner was £55.00 per person (4 courses) most things lake flavour...but did enjoy the brisket

We ate in the hotel restaurant for both nights of our stay at this hotel. The menu was excellent although I am unaware how frequently it is changed to provide greater choice. The restaurant was very relaxed with orders being taken in the lounge and the service was excellent throughout. Catering for specific dietary requirements is provided as a matter of course. Breakfast is taken in the conservatory and provides a wide ranging menu of cooked and lighter options. The latter is mainly based on a buffet. Again, all aspects were excellent .

Booked a special February deal at one of our favourite hotels. The deal included one of their suites which turned out to be be very comfortable. Cannot praise the service we received enough from the friendly staff. Our comfort was further enhanced by the lovely log fire in the lounge which was very welcome on a cold day after a walk by the lake. Food was excellent from the cream tea on arrival abd the delicious dinner in the evening to the tasty breakfast in the morning. It was definitely a home from home and we very sorry to leave. We will definitely return.

Luxury hotel with a personal touch. It was very quiet when we visited. The staff were friendly and very attentive. Our room was dated but very comfortable. The views of the lake and grounds were stunning. Dinner in the evening was delicious and I thank the chef very much for the attention to detail and for providing me with ‘free from’ food that was absolutely delicious. The spa is clean and Staff are efficient. There is a good size swimming pool, gym, steam room, hot tub and sauna as well as various treatments. Even the rest room in the hotel had products for you to use such as hand rams and ear de toilette perfume. If you need peace and quiet away from it all, this is the place to stay.

Second visit. The following still applies from our first visit. The Lake Country House and Spa are located in the most beautiful grounds and surrounding countryside of mid-Wales. Our stay, again, was very quiet and relaxing, -for once you are not bombarded by the health sapping noise of background music. Thank you once again to the team for providing us with a wonderful stay. Lots of great places to visit nearby.

The reason for the quotation marks in the title is that the owner has managed to make this feel like one is simply staying in a large country house, straight from a PG Wodehouse novel, instead of in a typical hotel. I am not sure if it was planned this way, but it works: the large lounge and various cosy seating areas for guests creates a feeling of intimacy and warmth. The furnishings and ambiance are just perfect - one doesn't get the sense it was designed by some corporate hotel designer, but by somebody wanting to create a home for visitors. The staff were all exceptional: friendly, helpful and attentive, yet not in a typical hotel manner - far more personal, exactly as you would expect in a old country house. It is rare for a a single venue to tick all the right boxes: lovely, comfortable rooms, fantastic views and grounds, good fishing (on the grounds and surrounding area), excellent food. And of course the spa! An entirely separate, more modern building houses the very large pool, excellent sauna, steam bath, gym and jacuzzi. The treatments and staff were top class. The food deserves a special mention. We are food snobs and are generally greatly disappointed by nearly all British food experiences. This hotel was different. The meals were all absolutely excellent. I read some older reviews of disappointed clients, but they have obviously changed it since then. We are not wine drinkers, but many of our fellow guests commented on their incredible wine collection. And it is so lovely not to hear music in the dining room! We met the owner a few times casually walking around and talking to the guests, and he is genuinely proud of his house and hotel. I believe that is the key ingredient here: personal pride - and it shows! Thank you Mr. M, may your great country house continue exactly as it is. We look forward to coming again soon.

I had afternoon tea at the hotel with two friends, and it was a delight. We asked for vegetarian sandwiches, and had a very tasty selection. Scones were delicious and when we asked for a different jam (other than strawberry), it arrived without fuss and the staff were friendly and looked after us very well. The Prosecco was delicious, and we appreciated the 3rd glass!! Social distancing was well arranged and we thank you for a very lovely afternoon.

We stayed at the Lake Country House for one night for our anniversary (but unfortunately it’s not letting me post a review on the house fir some reason). The stay was perfect in every way and the evening meal was ‘exceptional’. The service was lovely, in a relaxed location and not too formal. The choice of food was spot on and there was nothing to fault. The drinks were high quality and everything was perfect. The breakfast was even better with an excellent choice of Hugh quality local produce. Looking forward to going back again next year.

We booked this via secret escapes as an Easter break. I am not sure where to start as was so impressed with everything. Bedroom was lovely and toiletries supplied were of a very good quality and lovely fluffy towels and robes. The grounds were lovely and well maintained and there was plenty we could have done like golf, putting, crocket or tennis, I did not pre book any spa treated and as advised it was fully booked, however i did use the pool and jacuzzi and the facilities were excellent, The reception areas are again of a very high standard and again you have a great view of the grounds. Staff were lovely and all very attentive and made you feel they had time for you. Often you go to a hotel and have to try and catch a members of staffs attention for somethings to be told they will have to send someone else over. i liked the fact that they could all do everything, take your plate, pour your drinks and delivery your meal. At first i thought the dinner was quiet expensive but I have to say the food was fantastic and well presented and when you add the service an ambience it was well worth it. We will certainly be back and next time pre book the spa and take the rest of the family.

We visited the Lake Country House for a special Afternoon Tea at the weekend, a special treat for our daughter and son-in-law. The satnav may have taken us on rather a circuitous route, because the hotel seemed to be delightfully in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by wooded landscape and with a lake (the clue is in the name!) at the bottom of a sloping path (with the spa ideally situated next to it).

We were on our way from North Wales to Bristol and called in here. We had a full afternoon tea, it was nice to be able to choose plain scones, but sadly they were heavy and had far too much baking powder in them, the aftertaste is so bitter ! We never leave jam and cream but this time we did . We had 2 large slices of ginger Victoria sandwich and 2 large pieces of chocolate flapjack . There was a glass of mousse (coffee which is not to my taste).I asked for the teabag to be left out of the pot, it came in, we ordered extra sandwiches for our grandson but no side plate or napkin came. All the little things sadly add up and don't make for a great impression. On a very plus note, when asked if sandwich was for a child we were not charged, or for his drink. Very generous.

Take a look at their website and think Fawlty Towers. The owners and their large collection of family and friends spent all of the time entertaining each other loudly in the public areas of the hotel such that there was not a quiet space to even hold a conversation let alone relax downstairs. The same was true for the breakfast room where the Lords and ladies of the manor shouted and boasted their way through breakfast everyday. The paying guests we definately in the way and generally nuisance deserving less consideration than their servants -by that I mean the staff. The bedroom which was masquerading as a suite was small and some what dilapidated with a small old 2 seater settee and no writing desk. The bathroom was good if you didn't mind waiting 10 minutes for the hot water to get through and a low pressure shower. The glasses and cups were not changed between guests but washed by hand by the housekeeping staff. I noticed this when they stripped the room before our appointed leaving time when we had popped out to take our cases to the car. Horrible if the person before was ill you would be sure to catch it .The swimming pool was in a separate building from the hotel and a good walk away. Grubby pool, grubby smelly changing room.Such a shame as the grounds are lovely, as is the position . But this is not a tranquil relaxting holiday as advertised on the website, but a trial to be endured once you have arrived if the weather is not good enough for you to escape from the selfish and inconsiderate owners.

Having enjoyed our stay here last year we decided it would be lovely to bring my mother here for afternoon tea for her birthday, however it was disappointing. I booked for 4 people , but callled the day before and changed the booking to 5. This came as a surprise to them on the day so obviously the change had not been noted. They only increased the number of cakes to serve 5, but not the sandwiches so we found we were having to cut them in half to make them go round. They also seemed to be made from the end of the loaf. Cakes were good but not enough savoury food. The staff were not very attentive and we had to look for them to request a top up of tea and coffee. For the price of £17.95 per person we had high expectations and were really disappointed

We stayed for 2 nights as a treat before our second baby arrives. We stayed in a junior suite which was nice and the bed very comfortable but the sofa wasn't great. The water pressure in the shower was very poor (much better at home!).We did query this and were told that it was because the hotel was busy but I suspect that it's always a problem as we the shower only had a very small turn on the tap from off to full power. To be fair to staff though, when we asked about this, we were offered a change of room. We didn't eat in the restaurant as felt that £45 per head was too expensive and the choice on the menu was limited. We are at the nearby Caer Beris which was lovely and offered 3 courses for £32 which seemed much more reasonable. Breakfast was average. They had run out of ketchup the first morning and marmalade the next. I had to send my egg back as I had asked for it to be cooked through and it was runny (no good when you're pregnant). We had afternoon tea one day which was lovely, really tasty sandwiches and cake. The pool is lovely. All in all we enjoyed our stay although I think it was quite expensive. Maybe we'd come back for a treat some time.

Myself and my beautiful wife stayed here for our 1st wedding anniversary. We wanted something special and the hotel room (luxurious suite),hotel and grounds are spectacular. We booked through rooms for romance and got Champagne in our room on arrival (had to ask for it though) the bottle is Tanners Champagne and it is beautiful. Now the hotel is beautiful but sadly the staff never reminded us that we had a £50 voucher for the spa and that went to waste :-/.The restaurants menu is sadly limited and to be brutally honest the food is average now the hor d'o'eurves where great on the both nights we stayed but the starters, main and pudding was average on my plate, there was not enough consistency and to be fair we where disappointed, even to point out breakfast you don't serve reheated burnt sausage nor a fried hard egg along with a cracked glass for your juice. We went to Betwsy Coed for our 3rd night stayed in a beautiful b&b and ate in bistro restaurant and if the chef who cooked our meal was the chef at the Lake house I would of given 5 out of 5 plus the breakfast at the b&b was sublime. But not taking away from the room we thought it was very grand we felt like Lady and Lord Grantham of Downton Abbey. The bed is very grand and super comfy the jacuzzi bath was amazing the complementary bubble baths is a great touch and you get your own robes. We had afternoon sandwiches and the house red Shiraz is gorgeous.A 9 hole golf course is yours if you feel up for it myself and my wife chose to use the putting green which was good fun.Plus the use of the Spa, if you get to visit it!Plus it's a short drive to the Brecon Beacons. It was very special and I'm glad we spent our 1st wedding anniversary at the lake house. We would have gladly given 5 out of 5 but for the evening dinners.Visit Wales it is beautiful.Maria & Graham 16.09.2014-18.09.2014

Pretty expensive but good quality. The dining room was over large, in my opinion, and as a result lacked atmosphere. The service was nearly perfect - correct but very formal and a bit detached. The food was also nearly perfect - the scallops nearly perfect, just a bit over cooked; my steak nearly perfect, just a bit over done (I'd asked for rare). The dessert (chocolatey) was excellent. We took our coffees and teas in a separate, very comfortable lounge with large, squashy sofas. The bill was a bit more than I'd expected - but I had been seduced by nice white and red wines.I would go again - especially for the grounds in summer.

I found a deal on Afternoontea.co.uk for a menu not advertised on the hotel's website so I phoned the hotel direct to see if they would do same deal; they agreed. On the day of our visit they phoned me to confirm numbers. I had to explain my arrangement about the tea again so was a tad worried but needn't have been. The hotel is off the beaten track and is simply stunning and full of old world country charm. The staff were polite and friendly and we were quickly seated in huge squishy chairs and a sofa surrounding a coffee table, overlooking the stunning gardens. When the staff discovered we were celebrating my daughter's 21st they said they wish they had known as they would have put candles in a cake. How sweet. When the tea arrived we were impressed by the selection and the presentation. The tea and coffee was piping hot and we were offered more. My only minor criticism was regarding the scones; they weren't the freshest and rather dry. All the other cakes were delicious though and we were allowed to take home what we couldn't eat. Yes, there were lots. I would definitely recommend it and can't wait to go back. My daughter loved it too!

The food is simply Superb , Michelin standard without the fussiness! A great choice of dishes, the white chocolate desert is in a league of it's own the tastes, textures and colours are amazing, your left with a feeling of sublime content and what looks like an oil painting of purples, mauve's and pinks on your plate !

15 of us stayed this weekend for my 50th. They looked after us so well and laughed with us. The food and rooms were outstanding. They accommodated us on a huge table with great attention to detail. The food was absolutely perfect. We used the spa facilities which are absolutely lovely. Thank you for a truly great weekend which made my birthday very special

Dined with friends on a Friday evening and we all loved the food - the chef shows real flair in every course. I shall long remember his potted shrimps, with which I started, and the sea bass was perfectly cooked. I shared an assiette of deserts which was a great way to try everything on the pudding menu! At no point were any of us disappointed and, even though the portions are a shade on the small size, we all agreed that we would like to return.

My wife and I stayed here for two nights last week. We have stayed on about a dozen occasions over the last 4 years. It has been a haven for us - a beautiful, tranquil place. The rooms in the main house are all individual and ooze charm. The public rooms are lovely. Ridiculously we have never tried the spa facilities but the complex looks superb and seems to be well-used without ever looking too busy. To stroll around the garden and grounds (often in the company of the beautiful house dogs) is always a pleasant diversion. To sit beside the stunning lake, watching the swans and ducks gliding around, is one if the loveliest ways to escape the real world. The service is invariably friendly and of a high standard. The chef certainly knows how to cook and how to create a menu. Whilst the food is always excellent, however, we do sense that portions are sometimes a little smaller than they used to be. This, along with the end of the former custom of shortbread biscuits in the bedrooms, may betray some penny-pinching over the last year or two. If so that is unfortunate, given the prices. We have walked but not played the 9 hole par 3 golf course. It has the potential to be fun and is probably pretty tricky due to the tiny greens. Sadly it is not maintained to a conventional standard (those greens are like many fairways elsewhere, for example) so it would be somewhere to play for amusement rather than as a serious golfing challenge. Nit-picking aside, this place remains a firm favourite of ours, and we would not hesitate in returning again.

I stayed here for 2 nights with my boyfriend and the food was delightful, the menu changed for the 2nd night which was good, and nice to have that variety of choice! We didn't have any complaints about the food, it was hot, tasty and just wonderful all round...We had booked a package including dinner but if you hadn't the dinner was £38 for 4 courses fine dining at it's best!

We had an offer for a stay here, an evening meal breakfast and a couple of treatments. The price appeared reasonable given the deal so we booked up. This included booking a specific slot for the treatments too at the time of booking which was nice so we could plan our day.Turned up on time for our treatments to be told they had no record of us making a booking.Spa were apologetic and suggested I speak to the owner of the hotel about the cock up. Spa could only book us in the following day which was very inconvenient to us but it was that or no treatments.**The important bit** Spoke to the owner who wasn't particularly concerned and offered us nothing as a gesture of goodwill for spoiling our day.Now call me old fashioned regarding customer service but we were offered nothing at all. I wasn't expecting a free trip but maybe a sincere apology and a couple of drinks ? Too much to ask?In summary I wont be going back and I wouldn't advise anyone else to go either in case they cock it up for them too.In todays climate of rightly expecting exquisite customer service it appears this place don't care. As there is plenty of alternatives I suggest you look elsewhere.

We were staying at the hotel for a weekend break and ate at the restaurant both nights. The food was superb, easily worthy of a Michelin star and so reasonable - £38.50 p.p. for four courses.

We have been visiting The Drover's for around 25 years. As a full Family initially, now just the two of us. Peter and his Team never disappoint. The welcome is always friendly and we do enjoy a modest pre Lunch drink in the cosy snug out the back. The views of the river are spectacular. It was a bit chilly to be sitting outside on the balcony but one brave chap did take his coffee out there! The food, well, you can't call it 'just Sunday Lunch! It's a foodie treat! Plenty of beautifully cooked food. Always hot and tasty. The quality is certainly there as well. Cannot fault anything and the Sweets are to die for! The atmosphere is invariably pleasant. A good mixture of Walkers, Holiday makers and Locals. Thanks so much for everything over the years Peter. We're already in the process of booking next year's trip to Wales, so keep an eye out for an email soon!

Our first time here this morning. From the minute we walked in we was welcomed and seated. All staff were welcoming. Myself and fiancé ordered a full English, food was lovely not one fault and clear plates. I had a cappuccino which was tasty and perfect. We were approached and asked if everything was okay during our meal. We paid with cash and left a tip as we were very pleased. We will definitely be attending again on our next stay.

Great place to stay. A friend and I cycled to the area and stayed here overnight. The owner is very accommodating and friendly. The room is a generous size with all the facilities you would want, and you have access to an outside deck area with lounge chairs and table which is ideal on a sunny day. The breakfast was also lovely. The location was great as it’s a 5 min walk from 2 good pubs and a post office/shop

Mock timber frame manor house retaining much of its character and charm. No lifts. Breakfast was choose your own pre-packed cereals with a cooked option. Dinner was a mini-taster with delicious options which we watched cooked on TV cameras. The room was clean but dated with an en-suit crammed in. High windows restricted light and views of extensive gardens and river. The staff were friendly and willing but lacked service training. Guests our age do not wish to be called 'you guys'.
