Laila's Bistro in Edinburgh, City of

Came here wanting a quick breakfast on a Monday morning and after being seated we waited about 10 minutes before even being approached to order a drink, bearing in mind it was not very busy. The service was then slow receiving our drinks and then we waited a further 40 minutes for our food, all we ordered was a croissant and a sausage breakfast roll. Once we received our food I realised the sausage breakfast roll had only one small sausage cut in half, this didn’t even fill half of the roll. I questioned the waitress if this was right and apparently this is how it comes. After reading other reviews I now realised I was served a children’s portion. Absolutely would not return. The staff were fairly pleasant but service was very slow and far too overpriced for what you receive.

Cuando pedimos nos informaron que no había leche baja en grasa disponible. Aparte de eso, el café y el té estaban bien. Durante nuestro tiempo allí, lo que parecía ser un gerente sentado en la esquina con un sombrero rosa y una computadora portátil de manzana continuamente llamaba a los miembros del personal para comentar sobre el trabajo o decirles qué hacer. La parte más impactante de la experiencia fue cuando este “gerente” llamó al miembro masculino del personal y le dijo que nos diera nuestra factura, cuando todavía teníamos bebidas en frente de nosotros. Nos horrorizó este comportamiento grosero e inaceptable. Definitivamente NO volveremos y no recomendaría que nadie visite este lugar a menos que estén preparados para sentirse totalmente inoportunos, evite.

Laila es un encantador lugar para brunch en Edimburgo que es tan encantador de ver como cenar. La decoración es impresionante, con flores vibrantes y acentos rosados creando un ambiente cálido y acogedor. El café era exquisito, y los platos estaban muy bien presentados y llenos de sabor. Un lugar perfecto para un relajado e Instagram - brunch digno!

Laat je niet afschrikken door de roze kleur. Gewoon goed gegeten, vriendelijk en behulpzaam personeel. De Meatplatter voor 2 personen is een aanrader.

Ordered the french toast with streaky bacon and syrup only, came too my table with yogart on top aswel, i just scooped the yogart off didnt make a big deal of it. However the maple syrup portion was very small and only 2 small bits of streaky bacon, little for the price we payed, also was very slow wait for 3 french toast with not alot of customers in the restaurant Askes for our bill, got it and was questiomed why i didnt want to leavs a tip to them, i would have left a tip if I had goten exactly what id ordered.

Lovely restaurant, great place for nice photographs during your visit however average experience. Service wasn’t great and waitresses not very friendly. “Skin on fries” are very thin soggy chips with an odd bit of random skin. Our service charge was £20 which we removed due to the poor service and we were questioned on why we wanted to remove it. Not very professional.

Shakshuka was good-feta, a hint of fresh coriander and the aniseed note of fennel seeds, I think. And a wee bit chorizo on the side. Good coffee, friendly service.

The service was not friendly at all and they took 5 min to give us the check while there are only 4 people including us in the restaurant and 5 more minutes for paying ,,, i will never go there again

We absolutely loved coming here for Brunch on my birthday. The staff were so friendly and made us feel extremely welcome. The food was absolutely delicious and it’s so nice to see so many gluten free options for my partner who has coeliac disease. Of course, the setting was absolutely beautiful to look at too. If we had ONE criticism, it was that the poached egg on the benny was a little overdone so it wasn’t runny, but honestly, it was hard to critique and we would definitely come again. It is also a little on the pricier side, but I think you’d expect that from a setting like this. I will definitely be wanting to come again!

Nice food and atmosphere, if a little bit over priced for portion size. Our server Vaegas made our visit feel very pleasant. Even though it was busy she was very friendly helpful and chatty, advising us on the menu and local area. Will definitely come back again to try some of the other dishes.

Worst brunch I’ve ever had. Long wait time, disinterested staff and underwhelming and overpriced food. The French toast was a bland slice of brioche, the kids sausage bap (£8) was one sausage. Might look pretty but has nothing else going for it. Plenty of better places close by. Avoid.

A very busy spot do we were happy to get a table. Great menu of breakfast and brunch items that attract visitors and locals. Ruby waffles are wonderful and they make a great latte.

My husband and I visited the new town location and were quite disappointed. The aesthetic is fab and the speciality items on the menu are a great concept but I just didn’t feel that they delivered well. The food was very average and incredibly expensive - our bill was over £60 for 2 coffees, 2 orange juices & breakfast. Wouldn’t go back.

The restaurant was extremely busy, both outdoors and indoors - with tables far too close together. I could hardly move my arms for fear of bumping into those at the table next to me and it was an effort to get up to go to the toilet, due to having to steer myself past the many crammed in tables and chairs. When I did get to the toilets, they were filthy. I can't say I'm confident that the restaurant itself was clean either. Although we were seated indoors and away from the front door, flies swarmed around us. With it being the month of July, I would have thought the restaurant would have already have been aware of the fly issue and have found a solution to it. It's extremely unhygienic to allow an issue like this to continue, without finding some way of preventing it. The staff were as polite as they could be but you could tell they were not happy in their jobs. It was shared with us that they were paid only £10 per hour and they agreed with the negative comments we made about the restaurant. Unhappy customers and unhappy staff - not a great situation! I paid the service charge because I felt sorry for the staff, having to navigate their way through such a crowded restaurant which was clearly packing in as many customers as possible in to make as high a profit as possible, regardless of whether that could guarantee value for money or staff wellbeing. The price is far too high for what you get. Couldn't be farther from value for money. I will not be returning and I will not be recommending to friends or family.

Booked for breakfast. Couldn't find our booking. Asked to wait outside, the restaurant is very amall and this seems to be common practice for most customers, but it could be said in a much more pleasant manner. Food lovely. Staff left alot to be desired. Manager very over the top with customers who were late for their table. Asked for milk 3 times before we got it. The customers at the next table also had alot of issues. While this restaurant appears to be very popular, I think its the cook more than the staff out front, with the exception of a red haired girl who came on duty and really seemed to know what she was doing....

There are 2 Laila restaurants in Edinburgh. We went to the one in new town. Lovelly place, tasty meals and great and friendly staff!

Messed up our order, poor service, bad food, overpriced. My husband ordered a latte very first thing: it took 40 minutes and several requests to arrive: in a glass drinking cup. Too hot to handle, he had to wait for it to cool to discover it was weak and milky. They missed my son’s side order. I had asked for info about the pancakes, was told one thing very confidently, and it was wrong. The pancakes are served with cotton candy (not on the side, melting on top), a tablespoon of syrup, 8 berries and mascarpone. They were burned on the bottom. Waffles were bland and unpleasant. Turkish egg dish was mediocre. Each was about $15, two slices of also mediocre bacon (how do you mess up Scottish streaky bacon???) was $5. Absolutely not worth it on any level. Skip this place.

My partner and I decided to visit Lailas on a recent trip to Edinburgh. A friend recommended us to go here and I had seen a lot about it on social media platforms. Unfortunately it was a very average experience. Lailas is a beautiful spot and is very aesthetically pleasing. However I found it overpriced and food nice but nothing amazing. We ordered, a caramel iced latte, a funfetti hot chocolate, a southern fried chicken flatbread which came with cajun spiced fries and Oreo brioche toast with berries, cream and maple syrup. My iced latte was really nice however I was charged an extra 75p to have my latte iced which I thought was a bit steep. The funfetti hot chocolate was also tasty however again, it was very small especially for it being nearly £6. My brioche was nice, but there was no Oreo’s on it even though it was called “Oreo French brioche toast”, the jar of maple syrup was really tiny and there was only a few drops of berry sauce. Also one singular raspberry on it. This was 13.95 which I think is ridiculous for what it was, it was one slice of toast. My partner however really enjoyed their fried chicken flatbread. I also tried a few of their Cajun fries which were tasty. Staff were friendly and service was quick. I probably wouldn’t go to Lailas again, it is very overpriced for food that is just nice.

The place itself is aesthetically pleasing and well maintained. However, the food was only okay and quite a limited selection on the menu. Service was also slow. We definitely felt like it was overhyped on social media platforms prior to our trip.

Aesthetically pleasing, with tables outside to sit and watch the world go by. Had the egg royal french toast which was good. Nothing to write home about but easy to get in and out for brunch

We really enjoyed our meal here today! We came here for lunch and as im dairy free we were a bit concerned over the choices but the staff working were very friendly and helpful and sorted it out for me and gave me a delicious meal! My partner really enjoyed his meal here also. The staff were really nice and the place was also very pretty! Will definitely be back.

This place used to be my favourite cafe in Edinburgh. Great food and great coffee. Now the menu is very limited and the food isn't good at all. Even the coffee is hard to drink. Please consider going back to the old menu!

Really great decor and friendly staff who were very attentive. I’m glad we booked ahead because it filled up very quickly. The funfetti hot chocolate was lovely but the pancakes were very poor, burnt underneath and very hard to cut, as it had only just opened I would expect the pancakes to be fresh and soft. The maple syrup was also replaced with cheap tasting chocolate sauce which let the dish down. The tater tots however were delicious.

My daughter and I had brunch here during our trip to Edinburgh. The decor is lovely and the food was nice - we had the French toast with poached egg and smoked salmon- it was very tasty although a bit mean with the smoked salmon portion. It was very nice but not cheap - my daughter had an iced latte and when I checked the bill we got charged an extra 75p for it being iced !!!!!!

Avoid this restaurant! We came to the Antigua Street Laila opposite the Edinburgh Playhouse, for a pre-theatre bite this Saturday. Despite telling our server we had just over an hour to eat, our meal still took 40 minutes to arrive. When it did, the gnocchi Sorrenta had no cheese on it and tasted like simple passata with too much salt. It was bland and unpleasant. The beef burger in the pretzel roll had clearly been on the grill for the entire 40 minutes since we ordered as it was grey, dry and like cardboard. Neither me or my husband ate more than a few mouthfuls of our meal. We complained and were told 10% was the maximum discount that could be applied to our food bill - as if we should be thankful for paying £30 for two meals when 90% of them ended up in the bin! Slow, unhelpful service, inedible food. We will NOT be back, and we’ll be avoiding the other restaurants in the same chain.

Had wonderful brunch here. Really tasty although slightly priced but definitely worth the visit! Great brunch day out with friends or family. Nice decor and menu. Enjoyed the hot mint choc and the various dishes.

We actually ate at the Antigua Street restaurant but they have the same menu and are not listed here. The service was very good and staff friendly, sadly though ,in my opinion, the pricing is way too expensive for the portion size. I had brioche french toast which was one slice of bread, 4 small blueberries, 3 small raspberries and a small jar of maple syrup (not sure what happened to the berry sauce) and that was £13. Plenty other more reasonably priced brunch restaurants in Edinburgh - very disappointing.

We loved this place so much we went back daily. Its a pure vibe. You'd think that's because of the instagrammable decor and aesthetic but as amazing as that is, that's not what makes this place so special (or the divine and inventive menu)... its the phenomenal staff. Whether they be wearing a rainbow pin or dancing and singing to afrobeats, staff create an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere that's addictive. We made friends with 3 other tables worth of strangers. It was like an impromptu hen party. This cafe is like a beacon of light in a dark world... with bacon! Amazing atmosphere where everyone is not only welcome but made to feel instantly at home and part of the family. Exceptional staff. You walk out feeling blessed to have found the place. Thanks for the memories. They are cherished! Long may it continue 💜

Delightful coffee, yummy smashed avo on toast - absolutely delicious! Attentive staff in a cozy, lovely little cafe. We will go back today and try the waffles which looked incredible. We are demanding travelers with enough experience to say, this is a little gem. Keep up the great work and thank you for looking after us ☺️

The venue looked nice and the food was okay, but we left feeling totally ripped off. The prices are far too high, our bill was over £45 for two mains, one side and two soft drinks. My girlfriend is coeliac but we were told they didn't have any gluten free bread left, meaning her options were very limited. We were told she could order something without the bread and replace it with a side, but then they charged us for the side and didn't charge us less for the main - a bit cheeky. The icing on the cake was when they added on a service charge AND overcharged us by entering the wrong number on the card machine. Average food that isn't worth paying out the nose for, there are much nicer places to eat in central Edinburgh at half the cost.

Whilst the place is stunning inside and out, the less can be said for the pancakes we received. They were dry and tough to cut. Not fluffy and light, as expected from a good pancake. Very disappointed and had to look elsewhere for something to eat. A member of staff was trying hard to resolve the situation, but not to our satisfaction.

Such a treat to see a different menu for breakfast. Eggs poached perfectly in shakshuka, accompanied by a perfect cup of British tea! 🤣 A small place with a great atmosphere and staff were excellent, attentive and friendly.

My first visit to Laila was extrememly disappointing. I ordered the Harrisa Beef Hash which came in a tiny little dish with less than 100grams of beef. I expected something more but it was basically fried onion potatoes and beef. Secondly, a 12.5% service charge was added to the bill. The member of staff didn't really give us time to look at the receipt, she just kind of wavered the card machine in the first second of receiving the bill. The staff were lovely though!

We were delighted to find a table here on a very cold, rainy December morning. We had shakshouka and Aleppo eggs along with a nice cup of tea. The food was delicious and the service friendly. A really interesting alternative to the usual breakfast menus. It is a little pricier than average but we were happy with the price paid for the quality of the food.

Such a pretty looking restaurant from the outside, and lovely looking food but the taste did not live up to expectations. The food was bland and lukewarm. I had the ruby waffles which tasted very earthy and not sweet. The chicken served with the waffles...

Sad that the Pomegranate is no longer at this Antigua Street venue but 3 of us tried the new occupiers Laila yesterday and were very pleased with the food and the service.

Pretty sad really… Went this morning and got sat down. Was quickly greeted by a super friendly lady who was lovely. (We think she was Asian, honestly she’s the saving Grace of this review) Drinks ordered and whilst we waited, looked around at the decor.....

Service was incredibly slow! Tables are crammed in and staff/customers were falling over each other. The toasted sourdough was not toasted. It felt like there were issues with the kitchen and the waitress was trying to delay us ordering. The place is very pretty but...
