An accidental find as we were desperate for a coffee and it was the nearest one to the car park. You could find the 'olde-world' look a little off putting, but coffee was great and the coffee and walnit cake very good indeed - it actually had little chinks of walnut in it - very rare, but welcome. Service excellent and not expensive. Looks like it's worth visiting for meals and wines !

I was Introduced by a friend to La Zouch because of my interest in whisky. I joined in on a La Zouch whisky 'tasting session' and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and got to taste some very special whiskies. I enjoyed learning a lot from Geoff and Lynne . I know little about single malts other than I like drinking them. Having attended two tasting sessions with them I learned a lot and was impressed with just how much knowledge La Zouch have about high quality whisky. And so I became more adventurous in exploring and understanding what I was drinking. Recently I took a trip over to pick up a whisky I knew they would have and would otherwise be hard to find. I had a lovely time chatting with Geoff and Lynne as well as their staff and enjoyed the historic surroundings of their wonderful premises. Everyone was charming to talk with, and knowledgeable and I am even including some of the customers in that statement. I strongly recommend La Zouch for all manner of goodies!

My neighbour and I spent a most enjoyable time here yesterday. After eighteen months of snatched and socially distanced conversations over the fence and by the bins, we`d promised ourselves a treat at La Zouch when restrictions were lifted. We were not disappointed. Other customers were having tea and cake and others were choosing special bottles of wine but there was a quiet and calm atmosphere. Just perfect when you have a two pots of tea chat. Thanks

Visited today for the first time. Quite an old fashioned place which suited us. Served by a lovely young girl who was attentive and did a very good job. The food was good and priced reasonably but would have liked a choice of brown or white bread as only offered brown and the crusts were quite hard. Would we come again - yes definately and would give a 5* if bread is better.

Our friends suggested eating here after Ask had so many things out of stock and I have to say thank you to them and Ask! The service was faultless and the choice of food, wine and gin was amazing. I asked if the gin of the day was any good and the manager warm heartedly replied that they wouldn't stock it if it wasn't. It was! There are multiple menus depending if you want a platter, a light supper or a full dinner and we chose the latter two. Everything was cooked to perfection and plentiful with my fish being particularly good. The service was genuine and warm throughout and I was amazed it wasn't busier. We stopped for lunch here rather than a motorway service station as we weren’t wanting greasy burgers. This was a quaint looking place we saw from the car when looking to park. There was a limited menu but everything freshly prepared. A simple local pork pie ploughmans lunch, together with mumbled eggs with potatoes and salad and a couple of hot drinks for under £20. A very interesting place with an enormous selection of gin, extensive wine cellar and friendly staff.Sadly, we are unlikely to be back in the area any time soon, but definitely worth taking a detour!

My wife and I were looking forward to Sunday lunch. I have lived around Ashby for 30 years and had never been here before. On entering, the bar area was spotless but uninviting. It did not feel to us like the sort of bar you would like to loiter around prior to eating. Ordered lamb roast dinner and a "compote" of kiwi banana and melon. Which turned out to be fruit in a bowl. I like fruit so no problems there. Then the floor show started. The average age of diners that day was quite high and 2 regulars at opposite sides of the room struck up a conversation. "Eh?" "Pardon?" All conducted in very loud voices. Amusing - but so to lunch. Nothing wrong with it, decent portions but nothing special. Cooked properly though. We left satisfied, no complaints but not as impressed as we were hoping. If you like olde worlde tearooms for ladies what lunch <sic>, this will be your sort of place. They also sell bottles of wine that look like they are classy and pricey, but I'm not qualified to comment on that in any detail.

Having read the reviews on trip advisor decided to venture to the La Zouch on Saturday night. Firstly a positive; from outside it looks delightful and fits in well with the general Ashby feel. Unfortunately, the facade doesn't last long and once inside alarm bells began to ring.... There is a hint of mustiness in the air and visitors are transported back into the 1970's.. The owner is genial and welcoming, but there is much here that is wrong. Having ordered our meal and a bottle of wine (which is not in stock) we are ushered through to the dining room where there are three tables - all of which are kept level with beer mats. One table has another customer at and other is adorned with various bric-a-brac. We are offered a roll which is isn't fresh and have butter on the table which has clearly been there for a period of time as it has developed a crust. We are served breaded flat mushrooms in a stainless steel bowl. The breadrumbs are inedible and these are scraped to the side. The mushrooms themsleves aren't tasty, but we manage to get through them.We are then offered a sorbert which resembles frost which has been removed from a freezer and tastes similar too. We leave these too.Main course - two sirlion steaks. One blue, one rare - both are overdone and lack any seasoning. Moreover they are the smallest steaks ever seen and one has a course of gristle running through it. Vegetables and sides were ok, although the pepper sauce lacked any real sense of pepper. The steak had been held a while as the sauce (poured around the steak) had started to form a skin.Disappointingly, at no time we were asked if the meal was ok despite there being a considerable amount of food left on plates. It needs some serious amount of work to get the restaurant back to where it needs to be. I'm sure that in the past it has served wonderful, tasty, exciting meals, but at the present moment in time I would cheerfully avoid.

I have read reviews that say this is an old-fashioned restaurant as in the 70s. That is probably fair but it is not a criticism - this was a real 'find'. It is very difficult to find restaurants that offer a fruit-based starter. These are light and tasty and the Christmas compote was just right. The sorbet was another rare find. The service timing was well-paced, with time allowed between courses. The sweet trolley was another delicious 'throwback' to the 70s but so nice to see the options with a good range rather than the interminable 'chocolate'. I have looked for a restaurant like this for some time and having stretched our search to Ashby de la Zouch, we are delighted to travel to enjoy the varied menues. My husband doesn't like eating out but has said that we should go back to La Zouch - that is praise indeed. We shall be back.

Understated exterior but pleasant and cosy inside, friendly host but thankfully not overbearing. Food excellent, prices very reasonable, service just right. Quirky but interesting artisan foods on display and for sale, more like a corner shop than a fine restaurant. But that didn't detract from the dinner. Wide range of real ales in bottles, though they weren't as cold as I would have liked, even though the weather was nippy outside. Lovely place, and I'd go back when I come this way again.

For anybody old enough to remember Mr Benn, this s probably the closest I have come to re-living his stories.Exiting a busy high street opens a door into another world, where the pace immediately slows as one enters an atmosphere of days gone by.The friendly, bespectacled shopkeeper welcomes at his own pace, allowing guests to excite their eyes on the extensive range of wines on display. Ignore his wine list, it covers a mere drop of what is actually on offer, say what you are wanting on your palette and it will be delivered precisely. To one side of our party sat the local vicar, complete with dog collar and ill fitting charcoal suit; to the other a lively young couple, her dress would not look out of place in 'The Rocky Horror Show'.The menu whilst old fashioned was genuine. All servings were generous, with good fresh vegetables alongside. An upstairs visit to the toilet is a must as it neighbours the restaurants fantastic whiskey selection, surely Ashby's best kept secret. The puddings would have made any discerning Grandma proud, with a whole host of home cooked hot or cold desserts on offer, with custard if desired. The evening was rounded off superbly with one of a selection of malt whiskies on offer. As I returned to 52 Festival Road,I found no menu in my pocket, just a credit card receipt to remind me that genuine places do still exist in this frantic world of ours!

This was our first visit to the La Zouch Restaurant. We were interested in visiting the restaurant after hearing that they kept wines from local vineyards. Our party was five people and as soon as we arrived we were welcomed by the owner and shown to his small, intimate bar. Responding to our request to try the local wines, he spent a little while chatting to us about what kinds of wine we liked; red or white, flowery or oaky etc so that he could do his best to recommend the right wine for us. He certainly knew his wines, as the wines he chose were absolutely wonderful. La Zouch keeps an excellent wine cellar. With the drinks sorted, food was next, offering Table D'Hote & A La Carte menus. Not a great long list of items but a good variety and interesting choices were on offer. The service was first rate throughout the evening. The food was very well received by my guests and coupled with the wine recommendations from mine host the meal was of a very high quality. Throughout the evening, nothing was too much trouble, the staff went all out to make our meal as enjoyable as possible. Even when one of our number as for a Carajillo (brandy & coffee) the host went out of his way to accommodate, grinding beans for an espresso even though it was not on the menu.To cap it all off he even sorted out a couple of taxis for us at the end of the evening. All in all it was a real dining experience for us provided by La Zouch to which we were most grateful. An experience I will be keen to try again in the near future.

This I thought would have been reasonable given the portion sizes, but no to my surprise is was £22.50 Per person? Nice people but the place is like going back to the 70s. Great wines and food was ok but not worth the money.

Looks like a small cafe from outside but looks can be deceiving; also an excellent restaurant and there is a range of wines, whiskies and drinks you haven't seen for 30 years to choose from - a hidden gem.

We had a Groupon voucher for 4 people, so booked for an evening meal whereby our friends could join us. We had booked well in advance and so nearer to the date, we rang to check the day, date and time were all okay. On both occasions, Geoff was helpful and very friendly. The evening got off to a very pleasant start with Geoff greeting us, taking our drinks order, which was difficult as we were spoilt for choice with such an amazing array of wines to choose from! The menu was varied and interesting, offering some dishes that we had not tried before, especially from the Specials board. We were not rushed in any way in making our choices nor between the serving of each course (some restaurants can make you feel under 'time pressure' but they certainly didn't do this, the table was ours for the evening). The food which was absolutely delicious. One touch that was really nice was that there was a notice on the table saying that mobile phones should not be used in the restaurant and that there were plenty of facilities outside to use it if people needed to, this makes such a difference to enjoying a meal without constantly hearing people's conversations or seeing or hearing texts being sent or received. A lot of other restaurants ought to implement the same measures!!At the end of the meal there was a sweet trolley to choose your dessert from!! This was fantastic as there was a good choice and you could see that they were all homemade, we hadn't seen a sweet trolley for many years and it certainly added to the experience. The whole evening was relaxed, friendly and very enjoyable. Geoff, his wife (who was the chef too!) and the staff made the whole experience truly memorable and we will be back!! Thank you

It is very welcoming, we had drinks in the garden chose wine from a huge selection of quality wine from top vineyards. The menu was interesting and varied. The staff were efficient and unobtrusive and mine host did an excellent job. Not michelin star potential but we will return.

This was the second time we'd been here for dinner and on both occassions we've had very good food and wine. Although the menu is not extensive the combination of the a la carte and the daily specials has proven to be adequate enough to provide a wide choice for most tastes. The food is British in style (unusual these days) and the wines available come from a very wide ranging stock. The restaurant is small and doubles up as a tea room during the day so it's quaint and interesting as opposed to many of the modern, bland and minimalist offerings on the market.Service is good enough but maybe a little naive at times. Nonetheless, the quality of the food on both occassions has been excellent. We will certainly eat here again.

We went to la zouch on a groupon deal and were very glad as I would have been horrified to pay menu prices for the evening. We were served by a friendly waitress - wearing a blouse with gravy dribbled down the front. We had to ask for napkins and were never brought serving spoons so had to use our dessert spoons. The food was totally average and not what we had anticipated at those menu prices. I had prawn cocktail which came served in a tiny steel dish with half a slice of buttered bread. At first I thought they were trying to be ironic - I was wrong. The overall standard was reminiscient of meals out with my parents in the 70s and not worthy of the prices they demand. Generally I felt we were treated like 2nd class customers because of groupon which backfired for them as we will never return nor recommend it.

We purchased a Groupon Deal for La Zouch - but unforunately or fortunately we were unable to redeem it. We telephoned the restaurant to make a reservation and were asked if this was a Groupon offer - if so they were fully booked. We explained we could make any lunch time or evening but were told no - fully booked!!! We were advised to contact Group for a refund, what a shambles. If you sign up for a deal you honour the contract, obviously this means nothing to the management of La Zouch. Customer service - I don't think so.

We went on a Groupon Voucher and we had no trouble booking, in fact they went out of there way to accommodate, I have seen previous comments about the place being dated, hey what's wrong with that, it's far better than the plastic chains. It's different and all the better for it.The food we we had was excellent, the hosts are great, and with over the 30years in the same place they must be doing it right, it was such a shame to see the place with just a few diners, however on walking around Ashby afterwards they are not alone, this town used to be very lively at night, but tonight it is dead, and it is Saturday. this really shows you that times are still far from boyant.

On Saturday night, four of us went for a pre- booked meal . Sadly it was very disappointing - what food we had was nice but very small portions . We used a Groupon deal and I am so glad we didnt pay the full price ;- the prawn cocktail was tiny.If thats what you usually get for £6.25 you can keep it ! My steak full price would have cost £17.45 - say no more! Ok evening but somehow we will not be returning.

We purchased a groupon voucher for this restaurant and when trying to redeem it was obvious that they only wanted to accept week day reservations. Eventually we were told they could accommodate us but it would be a 6 week wait which we accepted. Upon arrival they told us we did not have a booking and could not fit us in despite the fact we had travelled a long way. These people are liars who do not deserve your custom. Avoid at all costs

I'm not sure about this restaurant. The menu was a bit of a reminder of years gone by - perhaps the 1970s. Having said that, our meal was perfectly OK, nicely cooked and plentiful but the place does seem to be something of a time warp and other diners, who we took to be regulars, seemed to have friendlier service than we did. Good wine list though. We won't rush back.

La Zouch is usually our restaurant of choice for family get togethers. We are usually a party of six with one veggie and one fussy eater. Son-in-law's parents like ot eat early, so we meet at around 7.15pm for 7.30. There is always a warm welcome and my favourite sherry before dinner, often brough from the cellar if there is none on the bar. The food is lovely, beef stroganoff to die for! Desserts are varied and imaginative, and a selection of cheeses is always an alternative. Since we are within walking distance, we are able to try some of the many single malts on offer after dinner. I'd recommend La Zouch

Had halibut, (my favourite fish) but too, too dry. Location & owners OK but the restaurant very expensive for the fare. Vodka & coke / lemonade = £5.50!

Have been eating here for over 40 years and have always been very satisfied. Present owners have been here for nearly 30 years and have introduced a vast range of wine and spirits. Whisky shop is brilliant and well worth a visit. Fillet steaks are always great. Theme nights and wine tastings very good as was recent Whisky festival. Highly recommended.

Quaint retro family run place . Clean and tidy and nicely reminded me of Terry and June style. You either love it or hate it. Food was simple but tasty, deserts to die for! Fabulous selection of wines which you can drink in or take away and massively extensive selection of whisky and brandy. Little gem of a place for those that want a smile put on their face and not in the mood for overly formal dining.

Menu not very inspiring - not cheap!Owner seemd more interested in talking to only other couple in restaurant about wine he was trying to sell. Think they rely on wine and spirit sales to boost income. Hardly noticed when we started to leave - we said "goodnight" he said "Oh - goodnight"

Great food and very attentive service in this small-town pub. You took great care of us when we visited. Very convenient to Breedon Hall across the street.

Absolutely amazing food, and lovely staff. We came a couple of weeks ago and decided to come again with family we enjoyed it so much. What we didn't appreciate, was them adding a cover of 8 people, which adds a service charge, (we had a party of 4, at a table for 6). Had they not been sneaky and tried to add it WITHOUT telling us, we were more than happy to tip for fantastic service and food. We questioned and it got removed

The Priest House has so much potential. Its location is lovely, situated by a river and the buildings are lovely. However, this is a very tired hotel, both inside and out. The exterior paint is peeling, the outdoor communal areas around The Cottage where we stayed were so dirty and unkempt and the exterior of this building was grubby too. The room was at least clean and plenty roomy, but the radiator was on full blast and it was a 23° sunny day. It couldn’t be turned down or off. The service in the restaurant was very slow and the food overpriced for the tiny portions. The constant drone all night of the aircraft flying into East Midlands airport was very noisy. It’s all a bit of a shame, as this place has bags of potential. Sadly, we wouldn’t come back again.
