In the center of the medieval Canterbury is an old and delicious restaurant named for the famous Trapiste, which serves typical Belgian food (although we are in England). This local place is a cross between a bar, a tea room, and a restaurant. In addition to a wide selection of beers, you can enjoy tasty dishes like the exceptional burgers served with homemade bread, or the special tea served with cream. The restaurant has a rustic feel, and each and every chair is a different style. The terrace is splendid, and there is even a gazebo, decorated with tiny lights, which make you feel like you are surrounded by stars in the midst of these beautiful medieval buildings.

My family and I were in Canterbury for our son's graduation, so some celebrating was in order. We love beers of all differing styles, so were keen to do some tasting. Although we hesitated at first because La Trappiste serves Belgian beer and we felt that tasting some English brew would be more appropriate, we decide to try it on the basis that we really couldn't find something similar for local beers. We were not disappointed! We started out by tasting the odds, then moved on to the evens, them moved on to our favourites... suffice to say that a good amount of beer was consumed :) The crew working the night we were there were so friendly and helpful. There were smiles and good service all night. We were initially going to go somewhere else to eat, but decided to try the stew that is served in a bread and cooked with beer. It was delicious, so we were very happy to have decided to stay. I would certainly visit this pub again on another visit to the beautiful city of Canterbury.

Without doubt this is the worst restaurant I have ever been to, seated almost straight away and then totally ignored, eye contact with the waiting staff is a waste of time and you have to wave and call them to get any attention, after 10 minutes of waiting we called the waiter over to take our food and drinks order, 6 meals and 6 drinks, after 5 minutes the drinks came minus the 2 teas, 10 minutes later still no teas so another wave at the waiter and call to the waiter to tell him about the teas.. he disappeared and came back to say they were just coming, another10 minutes and still no teas so and call to who I guess must be a manager as he wasn't dressed as all the others, he disappeared to come back with the 2 teas. 20 minutes later and an hour after entering the restaurant and still no food so a call to the manager to see what has happened to our food, he disappears and comes back to say it is being plated up, 5 minutes Max, 10 minutes and still no food, we were just about to get up and walk out when the good starts to arrive, 1 plate at a time. Strangely once we had our food the waiting staff couldn't of paid more attention to us, making sure our food was OK, very average food, over priced and a waste of an afternoon in Canterbury. Avoid, I'm only giving one star as I can't give less

Ventured inside here on a whim with family (6 of us) on a Saturday afternoon and had a great lunch, accompanied by beers from the thickest beer menu book I've ever seen! Mussels, freshly made pizzas and salads were very much enjoyed. They have some good offers too e.g. all you can eat ribs and wings etc. Very close to Cathedral entrance. Would certainly recommend this place.

Four us dined in the evening. The restaurant is quite appealing looking and close to the Cathedral. There is not a huge choice on the menu and the prices are not too expensive (unless you want the double burger).Service was quiet slow and it was far from busy. After the main course was cleared away, I got fed up waiting after 15 minutes and had to find someone to ask for the dessert menu.Food quality was quite good though except for the mussels. Bit bland.

We walked in, sat down, and waited a full 10 minutes to be served (the place was virtually empty). Was beginning to think we had to go to the bar to order. When we were finally served, the guy was looking around for other people (? I was sitting right there mate) whilst I was trying to order some breakfast. Not sure if he thought he looked cool, but I just thought he looked arrogant and rude. I had eggs benedict and it was very tasty, so thanks to the chef. Great breakfast. When our food was served, our serviettes were placed on crumbs etc on the table and slid across to us. Nice!Shame really as the place look kind of cool. Spending the day in Canterbury with friends we were looking for somewhere to have lunch where we could enjoy the beautiful day. Looking up we spotted a terrace above La Trappiste. We went in and asked if we could sit upstairs on the terrace. The waitress was helpful and said that although they didn't have anyone to serve upstairs she would be happy to run up and take our order. So we found ourselves in the sun, under an umbrella, on our own private terrace! We shared the antipasto platter and the fish cakes with a very nice bottle of red wine. The food was great, the price reasonable and we enjoyed the wonderful sunshine. Would go back again.

Stopped by for afternoon tea after a visit to the cathedral.Worst decision of the day. It was such a comedy of errors that it was beyond embarrassing .Despite it not being particularly busy and there being more staff than customers, the service was appalling. We were seated and given lunch menus, but informed the waiter that we had come in for afternoon tea. He said someone. Would come with a tea menu shortly. We waited some 10 minutes or so until a waitress came over and said "are you ready to order ?" We said we hadn't been given the tea menu and it then seemed to dawn on her that someone had actually told her earlier that we were there for tea & to bring the tea menu . She returned with the menu but was stopped by a very irate customer who complained that they were seated at a table that still wasn't cleared and that they had their drinks but had been waiting for their food so far for 40 mins. We should have left then & there - but after watching her shrug the other customer off we placed an order for 3 cups of tea & 2 cream teas along with what was said to be an ice cream milkshake. We then waited 30 mins for the order to come out- no apology - no serviettes and STONE cold tea. The milkshake was plain milk with nesquick (£3.90)My mums scone was rock hard and stale -so along with the cold tea we sent it back. They left the full cups of cold tea on the table and took away the pots - which they brought back 5 mins later - with no cups and one of the pots was empty. We returned the empty pot & said we had no cups and then sat there a further 5 mins before we were brought the cups. They brought out new scones for my elderly mother but by which point the experience had ruined our afternoon. They apologised and offered us the tea & scones free of charge .... but at this point we paid for the "milkshake " & left .. uneaten afternoon tea still on the table. The place is an absolute shambles and no one seems to know what they are doing. All in all a very unpleasant experience that ruined an other wise lovely day trip to Canterbury for my elderly mother !

With so much choice in Canterbury it was a disappointing option. I ordered the set menu and the soup was cold - literally like it had come from the fridge. No butter for the bread however they did offer mid course. The main (linguine) lacked flavour and looked quite dry. A quick spray with oil/water mix in the kitchen would have solved this. Overall it wasn't terrible just not quite good enough. Price - 2 course set menu and a large wine £20. I doubt I'll be back.

My wife and I stopped for a late sunday lunch, and sat outside as it was a sunny day.Service was timely but poor quality. Both drinks orders were wrong and had to be returned. The advice on food portions was also inaccurate - meaning we had a very small bowl of mussels to share for 2 - even though the waiter said the bowl would be huge and plenty enough for 2.The chilli prawns with garlic and lime starter was tasteless and bland - with a real absence of flavour. The mussels for 2 was worse than disappointing - with the smallest mussels on the planet served in a watery bland sauce that resembled oily dishwater.Overall - very disappointing - especially since Canterbury has some wonderful restaurants. Will not be returning and cannot recommend.

We visited the restaurant for a lunch of 2 sandwiches and a baked camembert. After we had ordered we noticed a few other tables seemed agitated and were asking the waiters where their meals were, we assumed they had ordered cooked food and ours would come out soon as it was only a sandwich. Our drinks arrived at separate times as we were told they were from separate sections as one was a tap water and the other 2 were latte's this was odd as we expected our drinks to arrive together. After 20 minutes we asked a waitress when our food would be out to which she responded it will be out any minute now, after another 10 minutes we asked again to which the waiter said he would chase it up for us, he then walked past us several times avoiding eye contact with no response to our question. After an overall wait of 50 minutes we decided to pay for our drinks and leave, with no apology whatsoever atrousious service and we will not be returning.

Ever since a holiday in Brugge I have had a fondness for trappist beer, specifically Westmalle Dubbel. I have always thought how great it'd be to have it on tap but never found a place that offered it. Well La Trappiste does. And many others, of variety and quality. I also came in for the food, which was spectacular. I had the two courses for £10, the mussels were great but would've been nice to have a bowl for the shells. The steak with blue cheese sauce was simply perfection and the fries were crispy and flavourful. Service of a high standard too.Lovely decor inside.

Have visited this establishment twice, being an enthusiast for Belgian Beer and Mussels. While the beer menu is as extensive as you'd hope, and the bar staff as knowledgeable and helpful as you'd hope, this place is let down brutally by their awful, overbearing and creepy manager. The last occasion I was here he was hovering about the tables, not apparently engaging in any tangible work but to ineffectually rearrange the furniture. My girlfriend and I left our table on a couple of occasions - once to go to the bathroom; once to pop out for a cigarette, to find our chairs moved around. Our reception from this gentleman was frosty from the beginning, as though he was reluctant to host a female couple, lest our presence should either put other dinners off their moules et frites, or tarnish the reputation of his fine establishment. He proceeded to rudely admonish a member of his bar staff in a very unprofessional manner in full view of his customers, and to interfere with the equipment belonging to the musicians he had hired for the evening and haranguing them for not playing whatever style of music he had hoped to hear. It was a busy evening, and the bar staff, visibly harassed by his imposing presence, did their best to be attentive to us and the other guests; the girl who served us feeling the need to whisper us an apology for his frankly bizarre behaviour. It is one thing to be the attentive host, and quite another to play the tyrannical busybody. It is clear that this place has a quick staff turnover and it is not hard to see why this is, but the bar and waiting staff that are there have been, in my experience across two visits, both knowledgeable and helpful in spite of working under these circumstances. Truly I feel for them. So yes, by all means come here for the location and the extensive beer menu (nowhere else in town comes close for Belgian ales). The moules & frites were good (the portion of fries in a paper cone a little miserly perhaps) but the payoff is an overwhelming sense of awkward, discomfort and pity for the poor staff who must endure this atmosphere day in, day out.

Booked for a graduation lunch with friends from the States - 11 of us in total. Expected this to be pretty decent bearing in mind the prices.First worry was the state of a couple of the glasses we were given. After a pretty long wait, when the food did appear it was far from ok. We sent back a pasta clam dish - it looked and smelt like it had been sitting around a while- it came back to us with a message from the chef that this is how seafood smells. My wife tried to eat it but just couldn't. She replaced it with a chicken stew. A few guests had the stew - flavours were good but the gravy was very, very liquidy and my wife had just two bits of carrots in hers, no way were they properly portioned. Dishes arrived at different times, maybe not so unexpected.I dread to think what our American friends thought of their chicken stew portions. One of my daughter's had the holloumi salad- the salad was pretty poor, no dressing was given or offered. The sea bass was small, a bit dry and looked again like it had been sitting around. The chips were poor, although they did look home made. My daughter had a steak which she said was good, but I think she was being polite because she left a fair bit on her plate. Two people had pizzas which looked and, were, good, and two had spaghetti bolognese which they also said were fine. I know it's graduation week and I know everywhere is busy and stretched - but restaurant owners cannot afford to give parties like ours an experience like this. We would never normally submit negative reviews, but on this occasion it almost seems like an obligation.

My starters was Portabello Mushroom with cheese & Bacon - took a long time to be served and when it was I think the bacon had been cooked for breakfast - it was hard and cold - no big deal but I should have sent it back - I was too hungry. Main course, my wife ordered Lamb - after 15 mins the waitress who was great returned to say they had run out so she ordered the same as me, Spicy crab and crayfish Linguinie. Eventually, when it arrived it had obviously been sitting around but it also had only crayfish tails, NO CRAB. When I asked the sweet little waitress, "had they run out of crab", she didn't know what to say but said she would ask the manager. 15 minutes later after we had finished she returned to say - the manager says he is sorry!!! No sign of him though - upon asking for the bill, I asked for some sort of compensation so they knocked a fiver off the bill. Still no sign of anyone of authority. DEFINITELY wouldn't go there again - There is so much competition in that area.

Staff were clearly untrained, unwelcoming and slow, even though there was more than enough staff working! Food was very overpriced considering most was either cold, bland or just not what you would expect for £15 a main course. For this much money you might expect to be served warm food! We came into Canterbury tonight for a look around, had nothing booked,so when we passed by La Trappiste ,and saw how vibrant it looked, also had a singer,we thought that it would be nice to sit out side, have a meal and watch the world go by,bearing in mind that it is also a Belgian beer haven, with a beer menu of at least 200 fantastic beers. We sat upstairs on the balcony outside, the first two bottles of beer i ordered, we're out of stock, but with such a large menu, this wasn't a problem. The problem was, the lukewarm food and lack of attention when needed, the table behind us weren't having much luck either, with a meal being left off of the order. There seemed to be plenty of staff, but I think all the attention was focused on downstairs. ,perhaps we were just unlucky. Popped in for coffee and cake on a visit to Canterbury. The staff were too few in number, and so our questions were rudely answered and service was poor. Coffee was ok.

Bread, cakes and pastries are made on the premises and are delicious. Lovely coffee and chocolate. There is a nice terrace and a spacious dining room on the upper floor.

This was my third time in the restaurant and I am afraid it will be my last! Was treating my daughter and Grandaughter to lunch, but unfortunately after 55 minutes of waiting all we had had was a drink! When I got up and went to find the waitress....yes I had to go and find someone! I was told that it would be about 10 minutes. I said that would be fine but if it was going to be any longer we needed to know as we had to get my daughters other children from school and it would be too late. The waitress went to find out and came back and said that unfortunately it would be another 20 or so minutes! Really!! This is after waiting for 55 minute! We said no we had to go and my daughter went and paid for our drinks....yes they still Took the money for our 3 coffees! So no I will not be going back. There are plenty of good restaurants in Canterbury with a much better service.

Working at the Marlowe theatre with a show and decided to have lunch here. I rarely complain or write a bad review but felt I had to on this occasion. Cold greeting from the staff and shoved in a very small window seat. My friend ordered the set menu and chose Mussels and Pork. I opted for the Onion soup and crispy onion fries. The mussels arrived cold the sauce curdled and they smelt off. My soup cold also and the chips soggy with soggy onions on top. My soup was reheated and was ok. My friend ordered the Croque Monsieur which was also disappointing. Soggy bread and a bland bechamal. This whole uncomfortable experience lasted roughly two hours at least the coffee was respectable. Sorry but I won't be back. I ate here last summer and it was good. Don't really know how it can go so downhill in a year.

They do a £10 fixed price two course lunch which is always superb. Initially you think this must be scaled down versions of the main menu but it's not, absolutely superb value. If you can forgive the really patchy service which entirely depends on who comes to your table as staff training seems to be a concept alien to the establishment food quality if good and the range of beers unsurpassed.Last time we were there we had mussels for starters and ribs for mains. Both dishes cooked perfectly and very tasty too. Recommended for lunch but I think over-priced for the a la carte in the evening. I would also be concerned about service when the place is evening busy as they struggle during quiet lunches.

Drank brengen gaat al even vlot. Eten brengen daarentegen... Toeristenval. Absoluut te mijden.

This was our second time of visiting La Trappiste but unfortunately, although the food is still good and the selection of beer even better, the service on this occasion was so slow.Waited a good 45 minutes before receiving our meal.It wasn't particularly busy even though it was early evening.Worth a visit for the quality of food and beer but not if you want quick service.

We visited La Trappiste for Father's day. The place itself is very authentic and quirky and the manager is very accommodating; we had to rebook our table for a later time because we were stuck in traffic and this was done with no fuss or complication. I thought this very impressive considering it was father's day. When we arrived we were also given a nicer table which was lovely. The food here is amazing and they do over a hundred local beers and ales. The only negatives I can think of is there is no air conditioning so on a hot day it is very hot in there. Our waiter was also very distracted and we had to repeat what we had ordered, this could have been down to the heat though. Overall a brilliant gem of a place. This is my third time there!

This is a really lovely cafe/bar serving Belgian/continental inspired dishes and a vast array of Belgian beers. It was a warm evening so we sat outside, it had a great atmosphere reminiscent of continental pavement cafés. I had a beef and ale stew which was served in bread bowl, it was absolutely delicious.

Went with friend for early Saturday evening meal on beautiful summer's evening. Location good with outside tables but that is the only positive thing I can find to say. We had booked but waitress seemed unsure how to locate our booking and just wandered around looking for help. Ordered steak which was tasteless and had the wrong sauce. Dismal service. Got the bill which was for drinks only so we had to point that out to them. Loo had no toilet paper by 8pm. Won't be back...

I went there for a friends birthday. We was given a smaller menu than normal and then told that the was only half the items available. I wasnt very busy but took 50 mins to get the food that was not very good quality, my burger was served on a wooden cutting board that looked like it had never been washed. Staff didnt seem to know what they where doing.

This is the third or fourth time I have been there and things haven't gotten better. The staff never seem to know what's going on and it needs to be clear whether you are going to wait on the tables or if customers have to go to the bar themselves. We were waiting for a long time before we were served and again when we wanted the bill. Infact, we were waiting at our table for the bill for so long that we eventually gave up and payed at the bar.Its a shame because this place has a lovely atmosphere and the array of beers is wonderful.

We were doing a visit to Canterbury on a Sunday, the cathedral was not yet open, so we decided to take a stop for a tea. We saw this nice place. We took a nice cream tea for 2 persons for 7,70£. That includes to pot of tea plus two small type of bread with cream and marmelade. Very friendly staff, free wifi, nice location in the town center.

La Trappiste is one of our favourite places for beer in Canterbury. They have a huge range of different beers, reasonably priced. We always pop there for some drinks, but every time we try to have some food as well it literally goes downhill. Staff are polite but unfortunately there seems to be a problem with the orders. Every single time (it doesn't matter if it's lunch or dinner) they've brought us something completely wrong or they have failed to bring some dishes. And this has been happening with different waiters/waitresses. It's such a shame that the service isn't even average, because it's a very nice place. Hopefully they'll sort it out!

We were here early Saturday evening. The place is actually very pleasant, inside and out. Nice art nouveau murals. The food, however, was disappointing. I ordered fish and chips and both were overcooked to the point of being burnt. The peas were dry rather than mushy. The mussels seemed to be a better bet. There were plenty Belgian beers to choose from but they were about the double the price found in Brussels. Service was a bit on the slow side, though the staff were all kind. I would go back for a drink but probably not for the food.

The staff was beyond overwhelmed, particular the first server who came to our outside table on a beautiful Sunday. We both had Belgian onion soup that was terrific; the peal and eat shrimp that we shared, not so much. Way too much work for too little reward!I did have a nice, light Hoergaarden beer that was perfect for the warmish day.We thought that they offered Swiss Raclette, but it wasn't on today's menu. Desolé.

I went here for a family occasion and I've got to say it was not good at all... waited ages for food which was even worse, I just had a burger and the meat was dry, it was really loud and the music didn't go with the restaurant at all. Will not be going again.

The smell was fantastic and those eating seemed very happy. We did however have two sticks of beers. The draught list ran to ten beers all very excellently kept and joyfully served. There will be a beer here you will like even if you hate beer. Friendly and approachable staff, comfy seats and great view of the hoy poloy through the Georgian windows. I could see myself sitting here all day.. except lunch at the Good Shed beckons.

Our 2nd night in Canterbury & saved going to La Trappiste for our 20th Anniversary celebrations. We didn't book but wish we had as table options were limited. Service was slow. Starter was lovely ( camembert). We both ordered fillet steak with option of mash or chips- we both chose chips & both got mash! Quick to resolve & got hot crispy chips - but when bill came we were charged for chips! Not on guys! Know it was only £2.95 but we were made to feel it was our fault? Change of menu but hey keep up! Nice steak though.

Meal was good but very diappointed to find out we could have had 40% off our food bill if we had said 'twilight' when ordering our food. What a shame the waiting staff could not have mentioned this when we ordered as we did not noticed the board outside the restaurant when entering as we had been many times before and knew we wanted to eat there. Left with a cheated feeling and will not return.

So, we rocked up at around 6pm ish which appeared to be shift change over time as we were steadfastly ignored by the waiting staff for 15 minutes after changing our minds about eating outside. When eventually acknowledged, my choice of drink was not available but I had to ask for another look at the wine list. duh! When it did arrive, the food was hot and on a hot plate but there the positives stopped. The chicken was overcooked and dry. The fries would have been nicer if the oil they were cooked in had been fresher. The decor is at first glance typical Belgian bistro but didn't stand up to close scrutiny, needing a darn good clean. The ambience improved once some background music started and we were happy people watching but there was no feeling that we were valued as customers or that our custom was important. We were milliseconds from voting with our feet when the waitress arrived. There is a lot of competition for the visitor pound in the area and I suggest a bit more enthusiasm and grasping of the principles of customer service might assure good business in the future.

We both had the Belgium beef stew served in a bread bowl. It consisted of 80% onion, 10% mushroom and the other 10% was the beef. Oh and I almost forgot the one carrot I found! Definitely not worth £11. We also had the stick of ale which all 6 were very nice. But again was very expensive as it worked out at £8:75 a pint. Waitress was very knowledgeable about the different beers we had. Would only recommend this place as a drinking establishment especially if you're a real ale drinker and not to eat as it was over priced for what you actually get.

Called in for a cup of coffee and as I hadn't eaten all day ordered what I thought would be a simple cheese and tomato sandwich - how bad could it be?The coffee tasted as if it had been boiling for ten years or so, so thick you could stand a spoon in it and was foul. The sandwich arrived a bit later, each slice of bread was about an inch thick, covered in mayonnaise some grated cheese some sliced, with a dressed side salad. No knife or fork offered to eat a very greasy salad, had to get up, find someone and request that I didn't eat salad with my fingers. The sandwich itself was pretty disgusting, couldn't be eaten other than to deconstruct it and eat component parts separately. Bread stale and why the mayonnaise?????Had to leave the majority of the bread, picked at the cheese and tomato and ate salad once I had received a knife and fork.Bad coffee, bad sandwich - now feeling nauseous. Avoid.

What a surprising little cafe, it shares its space with curio shop “Polkadot”. Great welcome, space to sit amongst the curios. We had hot chocolate and a latte together with a toasted tea cake. Whilst relaxing we browsed the items around us, and found a couple of little “stocking fillers” for Christmas Well worth a visit.
