La Barantine in Edinburgh, City of

The presentation was stunning, with flawless pastries. Sadly, the croissant was already a bit dry, and while the macarons looked perfect, they were rock hard, with the filling gone bad. We ended up tossing them, which was an expensive waste.

Very disappointed with lunch at the Barantine today. Asked for a Parisien sandwich. It came as (bland ciabatta), filled with very little ham and cheese and a bit of salad. Not the great sandwich made with crusty baguette we used to have before… The ladies who serve in the shop said the Boulange, further down Bruntsfield Road, were making the sandwiches and had decided to use ciabatta for their sandwiches… Wrong decision…disappointing and expensive… I have been going to the Barantine since it opened but not sure I will be going there for sandwiches again!

Cute little coffee and pastry shop. We stopped in for some snacks on our tour of Edinburgh. The window display had us wanting to stop in instantly.

Lovely Coffee, delicious pastries and reasonably priced. A cozy little getaway from the rain of Edinburgh and situated in old town.

Sitio chiquitito y con encanto, me encanta ir cada vez que visito la ciudad; adoro el croissant de jamón y queso, y la tarta de queso exquisita… ofrecen take away, el café delicioso. Se llena enseguida, ve temprano.👍🏾👍🏾

I popped in en route to the airport to get some Macarons for my son as a gift. I found them to be extremely reasonable, a great choice of flavours, and they came boxed with ribbon. The lady who helped me was really friendly and while she boxed everything up I had a good look around and found myself regretting not stopping for breakfast/lunch as everything was so beautiful and smelt a m a z i n g !! If/when we return to Edinburgh we will definitely add this to our list.

A lovely little patisserie and cafe at the bottom of Grassmarket. We had the Le Provençal sandwiches - roasted vegetables and goats cheese on delicious rustic bread - and Lemon Squeezy - an unusual iced espresso with lemon pressé. Service is very friendly and the staff pay great attention to Covid precautions, with cleaning, sanitising, reduced numbers queueing etc. This made for a safe and enjoyable lunchtime eating experience. The cakes and macarons also looked gorgeous!

Cups if only where bigger! as coffee is great.Cakes are lovely and the veg quicheeat in or outside but watch the steep hill as those tables will be at a crazy angle... no spillages lol..great to cake takeaway and lovely bathroom one for sharing is clean

Amazing pastries! Lovely to find such tasty treats. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and looked after us well. Definitely worth the visit for the proper French patisserie experience.

Beautiful little French family-run cafe in Brusntsfield. The cakes and bread are all made on the premises by the patissier and boulanger - and they are truly outstanding. The coffee is wonderful, and if you go first thing in the morning the freshly-baked croissants with jam are mouthwateringly good. We recently ordered a sweet petite fours platter to take to a birthday party. It contained mini versions of all of our favourite treats including tiny chocolate eclairs, brownies, meringue, and Paris Brest among others. It was unbelievably delicious and the other guests kept asking where it was from. It was freshly made for collection that day and was excellent value for the cost. Thank you La Barantine for outstandingly good food!

Stopped by at La Barantine because of the cakes on display - simply beautiful. The raspberry chou was to die for as it was so light but flavorsome. The staff were so lovely in helping me decide which one as they described all the flavours to me.

Tuve que venir a Bruntsfield hoy 1 calle en años. Encontré este pequeño café francés. Comida increíble bien presentada y caliente. La pastelería era demasiado para morirse. Brillante limpio y freah. El personal fue rápido y servicial y muy agradable. Recomendaría este café a cualquiera. Si estás de esta manera, entra, vale la pena una visita.

E y mi esposo pasaron por allí y nos atrajeron cuando vimos todos esos deliciosos pasteles desde la ventana. Comí un pastel de bayas y un café, mi esposo tomó un pan de chocolate y té chai, el té orgánico shibui que usan es increíble. Nuestros postres eran tan deliciosos, que decidimos quedarnos a almorzar y fue la mejor decisión. Sus croissants y sándwiches son geniales, ¡tan frescos y crujientes! Todas las camareras fueron muy atentas y amables. Nos encantó que en realidad fueran franceses, ya que es una panadería francesa.Definitivamente regresaremos y probaremos esos deliciosos canutillos. 10 de los 10 ! ¡Recomiendo este lugar a todos los que les gusten los pasteles de alta calidad!

Tomamos dos tés de la tarde que consisten en una taza de té y el postre del día o tres minis (macarons o magdalenas). Teníamos un juego de minis y un postre del día. Ambos eran encantadores y a buen precio. El ambiente en la cafetería también era muy agradable.

If you want a good macaron then come here! We had 8 for £11.20 and they were so good! Wide choice of flavours and all so tasty! Definitely recommend if you like macarons!!

As I entered the cafe I was greeted by a friendly male staff member and a beautiful range of pastries. I just ordered a coffee but it was probably the best coffee I’ve had in the UK. The lady who took my order was also very friendly. The cafe is very cosy and full of character.

Wij gingen hierheen voor ontbijt en werden niet teleurgesteld. Heerlijk ontbijt met voldoende keuze uit Verse croissants en sandwiches. De koffie smaakte lekker. Daarnaast serveren ze ook nog diverse gebakjes. Deze hebben we niet genomen, maar we gaan er zeker voor terug.Je kunt hier ook prima terecht voor een lunch. Sla deze plek dus zeker niet over!

Good pot of tea, but indifferent heavy sponge cake and a less than warm welcome. Will definitely not return!

We popped in early afternoon and managed to get the only free table in what is a very ‘cosy’ cafe where the tables are very close to each other.

This morning started with delicious breakfast, great service and most importantly happy atmosphere. The sandwiches and cakes simply delicious and coffee is second to none.

One of best cakes I have tasted in our week in Edinburgh❤️ Great atmosfere in small intime location.

If you are looking for a GENUINE french cafe with great coffee and proper french croissants and pains au raisins , eclairs etc look no further than La Barantine. The food is simply delicious. Mainly a menu of filled rolls with delicious cheeses, beautiful cakes and pastries. One disadvantage is you are very squashed so not the place for a romantic assignation!

Los sandwiches son de pan algo duro pero bastante correctos. Las pastas buenísimas, y el café bastante bueno, o al menos el capuchino. El local bastante acogedor y pequeñito.

Admired this place for a while but never had the opportunity to go on, until now!

I prepared my own breakfast in my flat, but after walking past La Barantine several times, I had to skip on breakfast and stop in. It is simply a tastefully decorated, quaint and lovely bakery in between Grassmarket and the Royal Mile. The staff was excellent and it was a wonderful spot to sit over tea or coffee and a pastry - solo or with friends.

It’s located in an absolutely gorgeous street so outside seating is highly recommended! The most spectacular dessert options is on display and all are so so appealing you won’t know which to choose! Staff friendly too!

A vast array of desserts,croissants,baguettes etc ,beautifully prepared & served...The coffee(Union ?) was very much to our taste...It's quite small & seating was at a premium...

This is a tiny, splendid place for a sweet or savoury treat. It’s so good-just go in and order one of everything. Food this good can actually make you wonderfully happy.

This is a very small café with not a lot of seating. It is billed as an artisan café which seems to mean basic these days. The staff were French which was nice. The quiche was very good and tasty. The choice of cakes was OK and looked lovely but didn’t taste as good as they looked as they were a bit dry and stodgy. We walked a long way to get here because of its reputation but don’t think I’d go back.

We stepped into La Barantine to have a break and lunch while touring Old Town. It is a small cafe with limited seating. The staff is friendly and the food came out quickly. We had a selection of sandwiches and quiches. They were all very good. We ate to much to enjoy any of the sweet baked goods but they looked delicious. They also have a nice selection of teas and coffees. A great place to take a quick break!

Accueil sympathique en français, une carte comportant des sandwichs variés, le potage, le plat et le dessert du jour. Le petit déjeuné est également à l'honneur avec de nombreuses viennoiseries. Le pain est également fabrication maison.

Doceria e cafeteria muito charmosa. Serve sanduíches também. Doces muito saborosos, sem excesso de Açúcar. Destaques para a eclair! A melhor!

Nous cherchions à manger des sandwichs. Nous avons alors trouvé ce petit café/boulangerie/sandwicherie avec un air très français. Et en effet, en entrant dans la boutique, un serveur nous accueille avec un "bonjour". Nous aurions dû nous en douter en voyant la Tour Eiffel décorée de macarons dans la vitrine..

This cafe is very hit and miss. Been coming fairly regularity and it oscillates between amazing cappuccino and mediocre depending on who’s serving it. The staff, again depending who is on duty, seem very cheery and chatty to some customers and very surly to me and my wife for some reason. Being a regular isn’t particularly valuable it seems. So I’ll be voting with my feet and wallet. Shame because it can be great. Consistency matters!!

3 jours à Édimbourg, 3 passages dans ce très joli petit endroit. Peu de places et pour autant, pas l’impression d’être coincé au milieu des autres tables. Tout est frais, les pâtisseries, sandwichs et tartes (pour ce qu’on a pu goûter) étaient un régal. Service très sympathique.

Un hermoso punto de parada si está caminando por la zona de Royal Mile / Grassmarket / Castle. El área está llena de tiendas orgánicas y artesanales, y esto no es una excepción. Un pequeño lugar de pura delicia francesa de café, hacen deliciosos pasteles, y el café aquí es excelente, simplemente debido a que el Barista limpia el molinillo y la máquina de café cada vez que se hace una taza. Definitivamente recomendado.

Whist looking for somewhere to get a coffee we come across this little gem. Small but busy cafe with a wide a wide selection of deserts. We had just come from the zoo where my partner had been very excited to see the pandas so you can imagine her delight when her latte arrived with the froth in the shape of a panda! Nice little touch! Friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere, well worth stopping off at!

Everything is very delicious here. When I am here, I feel as if I am in France. I live in Glasgow but I come to Edinburgh to taste these delicious desserts. My favorite is Flan Vanille. Besides, their coffees are perfect. I haven't tasted yet, but they have also breakfast and lunch menü. You should absolutely go to this cafe. You won't regret if you go.

Small bakery and cafe in Bruntsfield. Genuinely French feel enhanced by genuinely French staff. Good atmosphere, great coffee. Although I did not eat the French people tucking in certainly gave it the seal of approval.

We went here for lunch after we had walked Arthur's Seat so felt very hungry. I had the Quiche Lorraine, all made at the cafe. Oh Wow! Creamy and delightful.

Ráno v 8 o víkendu je všude zavřeno a mrtvo a na Victoria street otevřená tahle skvělá kavárna. Výborná čerstvá bageta, espresso, víc v centru být nemůžete a nikde nikdo. Co víc si přát?

What a great place! My friend said it was the best cup if tea she's had in ages. The coffee was great, the staff friendly, polite, and well informed. And the cakes...just beautiful!

Just a little place, only six or seven tables, but a good choice of sweet and savoury treats, freshly and attractively prepared. The ham and cheese croissant was excellent and came with a little salad which was covered in cheese and pine nuts - all good quality ingredients. La Barantine is also very reasonably priced considering its location just off the Royal Mile.

Pas très local, donc mais le café est très bon et les viennoiseries que nous n avons pas goûtees semblaient appétissantes . Came here early morning and were the first ones in the door. We were greeted very kindly and were seated to order. The customer service was excellent and i had (in my opinion) one of the best sandwiches i had ever had. It had smoked salmon, cream cheese, lettuce, and some other things and it was perfect. Everyone else in my party also felt the same. We will definitely be back before our trip ends and recommend to everyone who visits!

This is a cosy little place that offers great pastries. We has the Lemon tart with meringue and an apple tart, both were excellent. We could not get a table yesterday but are glad we went back

Went to this place looking for somewhere to relax and have a nice cuppa and some desserts and this place nailed it and also the staff where friendly too. Would recommend this place but only for small groups as they don’t have much space inside.

We stayed 4 days in Edinbugh and after already having several days of Full Scottish Breakfasts, we were so happy to find this little gem. Great coffee and pastries and lovely staff. there is room for about 15 people to sit, so it fills up fast.

My husband and I come here often; we live nearby. Excellent coffee. Delicious and very French (!) cakes and pastries plus really tasty quiches and hearty baguettes. It's a tiny space so sadly for us sometimes too packed to get a table - but its size is part of the charm. Recommended.

Piccolo bar francese ai piedi di Victoria Street. Brioches appena sfornate (anche se la varietà è poca) e musica francese di sottofondo, fanno partire la giornata nel modo migliore. È il posto giusto se non si vuol fare sempre la “solita” colazione da Starbucks, Caffè Nero o Costa. Consigliato!

Metimos en un desayuno tardío durante el borde. Nos atraían con pasteles increíbles y macarrones en la ventana. Sólo Pequeño dentro, contiene unas 20 personas. Café fresco y delicioso. Sopa, casera fresca, croissants frescos y crujientes baguettes perfectamente cocinado y llena a la orden. Luz llena de bollos en nubes frescas y frutas en el día.

The bread and cakes look amazing. I had the scone which was nice. But the rest of the group loved their cakes. Everything was very well presented and tasty. Friendly staff and a nice atmosphere.

Escondido en una de las calles más populares de Edimburgo es este adorable café francés. Con pasteles frescos, pan y pasteles de loafs este es el lugar perfecto para un desayuno estilo francés o el té de la tarde. El personal es bilingüe y en realidad habla francés e inglés con fluidez. Los precios son muy razonables, pagamos 11 libras por un capuchino, té, croissant, bollo de frutas y uvas pasas dolor aux. La decoración es muy acogedora. Sin duda merece la pena echarle un vistazo.

Mi marido y yo caminábamos por un sólido 3 horas alrededor de la Ciudad Vieja y el Royal Mile y estaban desesperados por un precio razonable de recogida. Nos imaginamos las opciones alrededor del Castillo de Edimburgo sería caro, pero tengo que decir que me alegro con el valor de la Barantine. Pedimos y Tartelette Fraises Americanos (estaba contento de haber confiado en la recomendación de la barista). El espacio es íntimo y se siente como un verdadero café en las calles de una ciudad hermosa. Recomiendo encarecidamente una visita!

Voy aquí casi cada día ya que trabajo cerca, y puedo decir honestamente que este es mi favorito café en Edimburgo! El personal es siempre amable, hacen el mejor café en manos de la ciudad, y sus tartas y pasteles son tan buenas. Sí son pequeñas, y sí hay asientos limitados pero eso es lo que hace genial! Afortunado si consigue arrebatar un escaño en esta pequeña joya!

Gestern durch Zufall entdeckt und heute besucht. Ein kleines süßes Café mit französischen Ladenbesitzer, die eine kleine feine Auswahl von sehr leckeren Törtchen und Co. besitzen. Als Kuchen/Tortenjunkie liebe ich sehr gute Qualität und die bekommt man hier eindeutig! Absolut empfehlungswert.

Ci siamo imbattuti casualmente in questa piccola caffetteria attratti dalla bellezza della vetrina. Il locale è piccolo ma molto accogliente e propone prevalentemente dolci e prodotti da forno di stampo francese. Ottima l’accoglienza da parte del personale, francese anch’esso, che sempre con il sorriso, prepara con maestria composizioni di pasticceria che accompagnano le bevande calde. Ci siamo tornati una seconda volta, l’ultimo giorno di permanenza ad Edimburgo, a comprova di quanto ci siamo trovati bene.
