Not a fancy place but the food is incredible and cheap!

Lovely food and great, fast service!

Does feel like an authentic little Japanese noodle joint. Went on a cold weekday night and we got a dinner set for 2 with some extras, (takoyaki, agadashi) and some nice cold asahi straight out of the fridge. Food came quick, but staggered at the perfect rate so there wasn't too much piled up at once. Made for a a really enjoyable evening of chatting and new fresh tasty things being put in front of us every so often. Fun to watch the chef work over the counter as the kitchen is open. Food was tasty and good value!

My boyfriend and I went here for dinner and it was fantastic. The restaurant itself is lovely: well lit, nice music, comfortable seating. The staff were very friendly and attentive and the food came out very quickly. We ordered the set menu for 2 which came to £17 each which was great value considering we got miso soup, 8 pcs sushi, 6 pcs gyoza, teriyaki chicken, shichimi beef, rice and a salad. Highlights were the teriyaki chicken (divine) and the miso soup. The only slight let-down was the beef beef - a bit overcooked and chewy - but everything else was delicious and we left feeling stuffed. Overall a great evening and I highly recommend to students for affordable sushi! (Boyfriend says great selection of beers)

Wow what a hidden gem! We had such a lovely meal this evening at Kyotoya. We went for the set menu for 2 - unbelievably good quality authentic food for such a good price! The food was delicious and such attentive and good service. It's a gorgeous restaurant with such a cosy and relaxing vibe. Can't recommend enough, this is my new favourite restaurant in Withington 💓

Best sushi in Manchester and reasonably priced

Little hidden restaurant, sushi is amazing and I highly recommend the shichimi beef! I love the owner who is retiring next year so hurry down quickly!! Just be careful when you head to the toilets at the back as the floor can be slippery.

Excellent family-run Japanese restaurant and always my first personal recommendation for those looking for the best Japanese food in Manchester. A fair range of vegan and vegetarian options, although it is strongly recommended to communicate this with your server (as well as any allergens) to ensure that ingredients aren’t included as the recipes can vary slightly depending on the day from the menu (which is relatively light on ingredient description). That aside, I can’t recommend Kyotoya enough to anyone looking for authentic, home-cooked Japanese food in a quieter area of Manchester.

Amazing little restaurant, truly a hidden gem! It's a family-run business with such a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The ramen is absolutely incredible – the portion was so generous I could only manage half of it, and all for just £9! Definitely worth every penny. Will be coming back for sure! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Excellent authentic Japanese food with an equally authentic and cozy atmosphere

Great value for money, compact yet cosy. Family run Japanese homecooking Sake authentic and best Japanese Sake in Mcr. The beef Sashimi was tender grilled and lots of sauce to accompany the dish. Standout dish for us Chicken Gyoza was outstanding. Will be visiting again

EDIT 2024: I've come back to amend my previous rating- five stars all around. Went for a set meal this time (£20) and everything was so delicious. Sushi was fresh, rice was perfect. And the portions were HUGE. We had to ask for boxes to take our food home and let me tell you we are used to big portions. It was an absolute delight. Original 2017 I’m conflicted because I have eaten in in the past and the food was great, the staff are so lovely and service fantastic! However recently their sushi has become very sloppy- the rice is hard, a bit like supermarket sushi and the nigiri tastes like it has been made way in advance and served up on a dish once ordered. Because I’m a bit biased to withington I will go again to try to see if it was just a one of. So if you are looking for sushi, continue on. But if you want delicious home cooked Japanese meals, look no further!! Great atmosphere and plenty of sake to go around

Proper local gem. Sushi is made fresh to order and is delicious, everything we've tried has been great and always generous portions. We always over order as we have too many favourites on the menu. Great for veggie/vegan options and my partner loves the Japanese beer. Great place for dates, mates, families and casual dining.

An amazing little Japanese place. The owners are kind and welcoming people, and the food is outstanding. It has been a while since I had a meal I was fully satiated by for less than £15, but I was able to enjoy an amazing ramen, korroke, and drink for only £13.50, and still had enough to take a large portion home. I'll be going back often, and it has quickly risen on the list of places to take people.

Food is absolutely spot on. Reasonably priced. Only negative I have is that it could do with some background music. Just to blend out other people's conversations. Would come again regardless.

I had đa vej skewer and đa vej Tempura. Đa Tempura was absolutely marvellous - perfect batter crispiness and tasty vegetables. Highly recommended. Superb!

On entering the establishment the aroma was so amazing I couldn’t wait to have the ramen broth as this was what we wanted to try and it really was as good as the reviews we read. The cheapest ramen broth we have ever had! It’s a quiet little place inside which makes it even better. Will definitely go back again 🫶🏾

Revising my previous 5 star to three I am afraid. Mainly due to the amount of oil in the food....hmmm, maybe the little amount of food in the Oil. Did request for oil to be reduced from previous experiences which we brushed aside. But this remained the same. The oil will layer at the bottom of the takeaway container, so much. Even a full English breakfast won't have that much grease. Tastes good, but cannot drain that oil anymore.

Gorgeous, melt in your mouth sushi. Food is cooked to perfection every time. Hands down the best Japanese restaurant in manchester.

The best ramen i've ever eaten in my life. And it was only £9. From Kyotoya. I tasted new flavours in ingredients I thought I was already familiar with. Each star shone like the sun, the sesame oil the solar wind carrying the unique dialect of each vegetable, venerated through the song of soup. I saw universal balance. I saw God. I found peace. Thank you.

We stumbled upon this little gem and it did not disappoint. The decor is pretty basic/unpretentious, you get a lovely welcome and it’s the food that steals the show. Affordable & beautifully presented sushi, what’s not to like. I’ll definitely be back.

It’s like a neighbourhood restaurant in Japan, but in Withington. The couple who run this place are just so nice, service is very friendly and everything we ate was delicious (we ordered A LOT). All at incredibly reasonable prices. Can’t recommend this place enough

NEW EDIT: Recently we were walking trough Copson street and noticed something new on the window. A rating of 4 for hygiene! Excited we went inside and sat down. We had a good time ordering our meals and chatting and we realized the kitchen is still visible from the restaurant, which is very nice. So we were just watching how the chefs made our food as we were the only customers at that moment, I was certain it was for us. Everything went well until it was time to make sushi. One chopping board, for everything. Vegetables, raw fish and meat! And no gloves, no hand washing in between. I was a little concerned but since i had ordered a stir fried meal i thought i would be safe. Wrong! The food was delicious, well presented and the table and plates were very clean too. But soon after we left, my stomach began making unholy sounds. I was lucky i found a public toilet on my way back or i wouldn’t have made it in time. My other 2 family members weren’t affected, luckily. It is also because i have a weakened immune system that i reacted this way. I will give some more stars for trying to improve hygiene and cleanliness! But i hope in the future the chefs wear gloves, use colour coded chopping boards, and try not to contaminate vegetables with fish and meat, because these are often lightly stirfried, not long enough to kill any bacteria. I will happily return if these minor problem get solved. OLD EDIT: The more times i went, the dirtier it was. It seems like this lovely place is being neglected in terms of hygiene. The plates are sticky underneath which makes me think they dont do the dishes. The bottles of soy sauce on the table are sticky as well as the table itself. I recently checked the food hygiene rating and its 1 star, which is really dangerous for some people, especially with raw fish being served. I will change my review if the restaurant improves the hygiene to 4 or more stars which is a necessity for a sushi restaurant. OLD REVIEW: Today i had a special celebration. This was my first time visiting Kyotoya and i don’t regret anything. The food came super quick, it was very delicious and top quality. The owners are lovely people and work hard, i will definitely come here again!

This is going to be my favourite Japanese place in Manchester now. The food is AMAZING, staff is FANTASTIC, generous portions for good price. I had chicken katsu curry which was fantastic. Then takoyaki (it's hard to find it so must try), veg tempura, edamame. My partner had chicken ramen and it came as huge portion, never seen so big ramen portions. I'll definitely come back many times. We went on Wednesday night and it was very busy. Strongly recommend, thank you. Edit: went again and once again the food was fantastic!

What a hidden gem! My friend spoke about this place for agesss and finally got to go. We did a fully vegetarian meal and it was soooo good! Highly recommend the veggie tempura and sweet and sour tofu! Will definitely be back. Really well priced as well!

This restaurant is highly recommended. The sushi is fresh and served in a sushi boat. We ordered shichimi beef and teriyaki salmon. The portions are large and the food is delicious . Japanese screen lanterns and some soju made me feel like I was in a Tokyo izakaya, I will come again

This small restaurant is a real gem 💎 We have been coming here since it opened. Where else can you get a meal prepared in front of you for three people. Five starters, three mains, two bottles of wine and a beer for 90 pounds. Outstanding on all fronts.

The sushi wasn’t very fresh. The rice was slimy, some were falling apart, all were sour. The yakisoba was very oily too. Only recommend you to have the tempura but also in takeaway only.

Gutted to be writing this but this place has sadly gone down hill. I’d read other bad reviews before going and always take them with a pinch of salt but unfortunately we were really let down. We absolutely loved this place and were really excited to go last night but the customer service was terrible. The main issue is that we ordered chicken gyoza, they got brought to us, I bit into one and had to spit it out because it was still frozen inside… so we told them, they took it back, stuck it in a microwave for a minute or so and then brought the exact same back to us… including the one I’d half eaten and had to spit out. On what planet is that acceptable customer service? Atleast just replace that one with another… Also touches like my boyfriend ordered orange juice, and instead of bringing a glass of juice over she brought the carton of the cheapest orange juice you can buy to the table and filled up his glass. This is a humble restaurant so I don’t expect a 5* experience but the food really isn’t cheap enough for that kind of service. Sadly will not be returning.

I used to use this place regularly prior to COVID. Always enjoyed it's honesty. Returned this week with my now 16 years old daughter. Beautiful delicious tuna sushi. Great ramen bowls. My only criticism would be that the portions (ramen) were huge. They could be half the size and still be great value for money. We struggled to eat it all. My daughter loves her food but was overfaced. However we will definitely return but may only have one course. Which would be a shame. I love this place and the owners are great. But I do wish they would take card payments. I am so glad the business survived through COVID upheaval.

So I went with a friend without realising this has 1 hygiene star only. The sushi tastes very nice. The place needs a good clean. The public toilet is in the back past where they are preparing food. To dry my hands a communal hand towel was the thing available which also needed a wash. I dried my hands on my jeans!!

I hate giving such a low review but I got really really bad food poisoning which is the first time in many many years. Came in on a Wednesday 22/03/23. Maybe it’s a one off, but still… Been getting stomach cramps all day and night and it’s lasted for a few days now. I am no stranger to sushi as well, I have eaten A LOT of sushi in my life and never had any problem with it. Zumu sushi is a lot better in terms of quality and shape. Will not be coming again unfortunately. A question to the owner: Was the sushi you gave me on 22/3 really fresh ? I’m sure your answer is going to be yes, but please double check the expiry dates and cleanliness. I work in the hospitality industry and know in such dire times, that chefs will use stock which is out of date by a day or two just to save food waste and cost. By all means, I’m not saying you are doing this, but just beware if you are. I usually only leave a review if there’s something exceptional to say about the place or the latter and in this case it is the latter.

On arrival, we immediately were given a warm welcome from the sushi master and his staff! The food itself was good quality, fresh and made to order! Great atmosphere, such a hidden gem! 10/10, it wasn't our first visit and it certainly won't be our last!

Not good, very dirty inside strong smell of grease, ramen was not ramen tasted like greasy dishwater avoid! Didn’t enjoy anything really need to clean the place

This place is absolutely dire. Filthy inside and dirty food. I can’t believe that I didn’t check out the hygiene rating before I went. I stupidly presumed because of the ‘good reviews’ that it would be clean. What an oversight. As soon as I left the dirty place I checked the hygiene rating and to my horror it was a 1. Yea that’s right, a 1. Now if you want to go to a sushi place with a hygiene rating of 1 then do so at your own peril! Avoid!!

Love this place. Been a few times and keep coming back! Lovely staff and amazing food especially for the low prices. I would really recommend the 16 piece mixed sushi, it comes on a big wooden boat.

I have seen lots of positive reviews about the sushi - and maybe that is great, however.. The ramen is not Japanese in the slightest, it is Chinese soup with chicken/beef etc chucked in. The gyozas are clearly just frozen from a bag you can buy for £2 from the supermarket. Fortunately for them, most British customers won't know the difference (I do having lived in Japan) but sadly this is just another Chinese run business fronting as a Korean / Japanese restaurant. Cash only is another give away sign.

Having lived in South Korea, China and Japan, it is slightly disingenuous to call this a 'Japanese' restaurant. I have seen the positive reviews about the sushi, and I cannot comment on that because I ordered the chicken 'ramen'. This was essentially a bowl of Chinese soup with some ropey chicken thrown in. A million miles from Japanese ramen, which has a much thicker (and nicer) broth with an egg and thinly cut chicken. The staff are friendly but clearly Chinese - they were speaking Chinese to each other - and many of the patrons were Chinese. I guess the average British customer will not know the difference - and perhaps the sushi is of good standard - but in my humble opinion this is not a Japanese restaurant. There are so many of these phoney Japanese/Korean restaurants knocking around Manchester - I will stick to Wagamama.

Nice place with simple (in a good sense) great food! The interior looks beautiful, exactly as you're expecting from a Japanese restaurant, maybe I was lucky, but this place was really calm, and the quality of service is decent and courteous. Highly recommend

We dropped in to this restaurant in the strength of great reviews. The food quality, portion size and service were great. We tried a range of the menu and were not disappointed in any choice. The sushi and sashimi were top quality and very much enjoyed. Will return there again, frequently.

Managed to get the one table outside in the sun. Ordered the sushi platter which was huge and pretty good value, and the glass of wine couldn't have been filled any higher. Seems like a small family run place with the father cooking and son serving, definitely heading back to try more of the menu

Lovely food, great service and nice atmosphere. One of my favourites.

I visited due to the good reviews but was so disappointed. The food served was very inauthentic. The staff were welcoming but I would never go back. The sashimi was not sliced properly. The tuna and salmon pieces were far too large and thick. A few of the gyoza were black underneath and tasted bitter and burnt. The sushi was clumsily prepared and collapsed on being picked up with chopsticks. The tempura was fine and served fresh.

Brilliant prices considering some of the best (and I mean BEST) quality food in the whole of Manchester. Never fails to surpass my expectations. Staff here are lovely and it’s just a great place to come w friends. Will keep coming here many a times. Truly authentic Japanese food.

Sensational 40 piece sushi platter. Could see them being rolled by hand in the back. Great service, even better food. Will come again.

Absolutely disgusting! I'm not talking about food, I'm talking about cleanliness. I am surprised that it is still open.

I phoned an hour before closing to ask if there was availability for a table for 4 people. They said yes. Perfect! We get there in 15 minutes... as soon as we entered the chef in a very rude way tells us to order fast and why they were going to close. No problem. We order sushi, Sea food tempura and chicken katzu. Not the first time we eat in this restaurant, never had any problems... but this time it was different.... The Sushi was terrible, the fish didn't look fresh and the rice wasn't good. The tempura batter was raw and the Katzu chicken never arrived. Very disappointed. We ask for the bill is the katzu chicken was included in the price. We point it out to him and very rudely he redos the bill. Absolutely disgusted by the condition of the place that looked dirtier than usual. We have been going to eat at Kyotya's for years but we will never come back! The chef's behavior was unspeakable.... I mean, who do you think you are? Just say that it was about to close and we will have gone somewhere else... but if you give me a table you have to behave professionally and cook well.

Noodle and Nabe like Chinese style. Eel was just taken from fridge and unpacked then reheat. The sauce is not enough and not tasty. The only good food is tempura. Please remember to bring your cash, no card.
