Booked months in advance and was so looking forward to it. Food was Ok but service let it down. We were aware of the 90minute sitting - we were asked if we wanted dessert and after ordering that and Sake it was delivered along with the bill saying “you have 5 minutes left to vacate the table”. You could tell the waitress felt uncomfortable saying this but manager promptly followed with the card machine. I hadn’t even finished my dessert!! I have never felt rushed out a restaurant and it ruined the whole experience. Won’t be returning and will be sharing my views with others. You are prioritising quantity over a quality customer experience.

Came here for my birthday meal this evening with a friend and was also my first time. The atmosphere was really lovely, the staff were also lovely and the food was amazing, my friend and I had a really lovely time until it came to paying our bill. We decided to not pay the service charge, no reason, we just didn't want to (and we're allowed to not want to) then the waitress at first questioned what we were paying as she thought we weren't paying the right amount and then worked out while in the middle of her thoughts that we removed the service charge. She then left and came back and we were then asked for 'feedback' as to why we didn't want to pay the service charge...there's is no way that this can be asked without it being rude, this question shouldn't have been asked at all. We do not have to explain why we don't want to give our money, like what the hell, who does that? Other than what we owe for the meal, a customers money, a customers finances and choices around that are non of your business. And we left with the staff members huddled around the till obviously being told and talking about that we didn't pay a tip. A tip is optional. We weren't a big table either, just my friend and I. I've never felt so awkward leaving a restaurant, I've never gone to a birthday meal to then feeling icky and shamed for something that was our CHOICE, and that was carried into the rest of my evening. As good as this place is I'm probably not going to go back and I will be letting my friends know that this was my experience. No one appreciates being questioned about why they dont give you money. If you want to pay a tip then cool, there are times where I do, on this occasion I just decided not too, no biggy, but you don't get to question your customers on why they didn't want to hand you extra cash. If you want feedback then do what Bar Iberico do and provide a feedback card that comes with the bill. If that hadn't have happened this would have been a five star rating, but the lack of etiquette overshadowed the rest of our evening celebrating my birthday. Not cool.

My partner and I came here to celebrate our joint birthday/valentines as a treat. We'd visited before and had a wonderful experience so were super excited to return after booking 4 months in advance. The food itself is absolutely stunning, we opted for a couple of dishes from each section of the menu and everything was beautifully cooked and presented. The prawn sando is particularly good, as is the amazake pudding. Outside of the food, however, we were left feeling a little disappointed. We were seated right next to the bar, and our initial server interaction was nothing more than a taking of orders. We weren't welcomed in, notified about the specials board (which I definitely would have ordered off of), drinks were passed over the bar itself and dropped onto our table, we weren't offered water or another drink order, and the pots with napkins and chopsticks used for the tables were jostled around and replenished by my head. I'd also loved to have had the dishes explained as they're presented, given the intricacy of the compositions. This might all sound quite nitpicky, but given the price point of Kushi-ya, the quality of the food and the 10% service charge, we were expecting more to make the place and experience feel as special as the food is.

So the downfall of mine and Mrs N occupation is that we can't always get time off together. So to celebrate my birthday we looked where to go locally for a midweek meal. I'd heard about Kushi Ya and we managed to get a booking. It's a small compact restaurant, with an open kitchen and a busy vibe. We were greeted and seated and then looked at the menus. There is a great selection of little plates and I really liked the way that they come as and when they are ready, rather than in courses. Special mention to the edamame beans a salty sweet char grilled bowl of loveliness. The Tuna Tatake and the braised pork shoulder 🤤🤤. I chose a glass of sake and let our server choose which one, I ended up with Yuzu flavoured and it was stunning. So much so that my wife who tried a small sip, has made me order a bottle, as she wanted a glass but was driving. Overall a great informal place to sample some stunning food in a relaxed casual atmosphere, we will be visiting again.

My husband and I have been trying to get in here for lunch- for ages. Previously always full. There was one free table on this visit. I have to say that the entrance to the alley is disgusting- the path littered with debris and cigarette ends, but all was fine once in the cafe. The decor is very plain and simple- not cosy on the very cold day that we visited. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food was delicious and reasonably priced. I appreciate that the alley is shared with other businesses, but it is not pleasant going in and out.

Oct 2023 It gets very difficult to book a table at this restaurant, and on this occasion had to chance our luck by going to their walk in lunch on Saturday. There was a long queue when we arrived so was sent to their sister bar around the corner whilst we waited for a table to become free. Food was still amazing and the service impeccable! Oct 2022 Revisited my favorite restaurant in Nottingham! Food was excellent as always. Have posted latest menu and pictures. The sashimi and prawn toast was amazing! Thank you to the staff who are attentive but not obtrusive. This place is an absolute gem. Jul 2021 Everyone in our party had their favourite dish but the braised pork and tiger prawns were particularly enjoyed. As it was our first visit we tried as many dishes as we could and they are all very good and made fresh to order. The sushi salmon is also one of my favourites of the evening. Sadly we were so full we didn't have room for a pudding, but we promised that we would return to have another go at the menu.

He took the bottle of wine off our bill ( which you would expect as most of it was over my husband’s Hugo boss outfit). So, finally managed to bag a table at Kushi-ya; it's small and very popular. Had to settle for lateish on a Wednesday. Well worth the wait though - food quality was very high indeed, especially for Nottingham; this place would be more at home in Shoreditch! This is a "small plates" venue, and five had us both well fed after the obligatory prawn cracker starter (which were the best we'd ever had). Very interesting, tasty combinations, expertly cooked and well deserving of Michelin's "bib gourmand". Desserts definitely not an afterthought (especially the matcha cheesecake). Very informative and enthisiastic waitress. We got out for £108 for two inc. bottle of wine, two glasses of dessert wine, and service (which was 10%; a rarity these days). That's great value for the skills on show. Planning on bringing friends and family soon...if we can get a table.

Maybe a bigger venue? Some others arrived before their reservation and left, returning just as their table was ready. Your success is hindering the whole experience. Speed has overtaken the joy. Stupendous good, delicious textures and excellent drinks. Kushi Ya is a standout eatery managing to live up to the sizeable local hype. Unlike some other reviews, I think for the quality of food, the value is there. The only minor niggle is that we were asked to free up the table 75/80 minutes after arriving. We asked for the bill, and then a couple of minutes later we were asked by another staff member to start wrapping things up. When we’re spending £110 on food - I’d like to have been provided a little more time - or just asked more nicely! We will be back for sure. I can recommend the prawn sando and the tomato’s. However we were rushed out the door while still eating dessert, not notified of remaining time limit on table until after ordering, wouldn't have ordered if we knew how much time was left. Music played clashed with the atmosphere of the venue

Bit odd. Waited three months to eat there and then quite disappointed. Starters very good, however the rest was mediocre. Main problem is the service is too quick, too much food/drink too soon. Also, with the help of the waiter, we could have shared dishes, however unhelpful when we walked in until we left.

Exquisite place, food and atmosphere. The first time I ate here I was amazed that Nottingham had such a beautiful restaurant in it's city centre. Must haves I'd recommend are the chicken and beef skewers, salmon and tira-miso. Not really much else to say other than give it a try, worth every penny! Come here for a date, with family or on your own to experience true Japanese cuisine. Thank you to the chefs and staff for making this evening so special❤️👌🔥👏

We walked in, the place was full, however we could see a couple of seats and asked if we could sit there but a guy making drinks refusing to make eye contact while standing next to him told his colleague to tell us to come back in 45 minutes! He was incredibly rude so decided not to wait.

Wonderful surprise. Our son took us down a little alleyway and we were rather worried, but we opened this big black door and at the top of the stairs was this wonderful little surprise. We went to celebrate our son's graduation and this was his choice and we loved it. The dishes are not huge but incredibly filling. The food was delicious, small and friendly venue and the staff were very helpful. My husband was very happy to have gluten free.options. highly recommended this restaurant.

My daughter had really enjoyed the food here on previous visits so thought it would be a good place to have a celebratory lunch for her birthday. They don’t take bookings for lunch so you need to get there early to guarantee a table as it’s only a small restaurant. We got there at 1140 for a 1200 opening and there were 5 people in front of us. The staff run the restaurant like clockwork - they have to to ensure they maximise the number of people they can serve lunch to. There is a small lunch menu (snack, 2 small plates and rice for £15) as well as items from the a la carte menu (mainly small plates). We chose the prawn toast, prawn skewer and chicken on a stick with rice and curry sauce and then ordered a small, plate of salmon sashimi between us - this was a good amount for lunch. The food arrived quite quickly and is served quite simply on a tray. Every part of the meal was superb - really nice and tasty flavours with excellent accompanying dips/sauces. The prawn toast was our favourite - a million miles from the version you get in a Chinese restaurant. Service was extremely efficient and friendly. A perfect place for a tasty lunch

Wow, very good. We were very lucky and managed to get a table at 5pm today. Food was excellent, wine was excellent, service was excellent. Was surprised not to see anyone from Japan?

Great spot. Came for the set lunch and it was pretty great. Come expecting Japanese "inspired' food and you won't be disappointed at all. - clearly a local favourite given the queue half an hour before opening. Looked like you could walk in after about an hour or so. Will be back to try the evening/ main menus

We went to Kushi ya this evening which was our second visit in 3 months and it did not disappoint. Whilst I still find the wine list a little limiting for my tastes, the quality of the food was amazing and in fact I told the chefs as we left that the flavour of my tuna/orange/pepper dish was far better than any dish consumed the night before at a well known Michelin starred restaurant in North Yorkshire. Keep up the good work everyone!

Amazing food & service!! Following a recommendation from a friend we went here for dinner before heading to the theatre. Tucked away down a little side street it’s 100% worth a visit! We went we 8 plates as recommended and they were all delicious! The prawn toast & prawn katsu sando were absolute standout dishes for both of us, with the raw salmon causing arguments over who got the 5th slice! We were tempted to skip pudding and order more savoury dishes, but so glad we didn’t! The tira-miso was stunning & I absolutely did a happy food dance over the amazake pudding!

Very decent Japanese (but emphatically not trad sushi/sashimi) inspired dishes. ‘All in’ on the small plates trend. Every plate was delicious but seemed to vary wildly in terms of value for money. The sweetcorn and kale tempura balls were outstanding. Lovely pickles. Excellent light miso soup. Pork shoulder was Interior and ambience I found slightly lacking for a restaurant relieving you of £40 per head. Waited nearly 6 weeks to get a table on a Friday night which perhaps led to expectation being a little too high. Would like to revisit to try rest of the menu though.

The best restaurant in Nottingham. Everything we ordered were so delicious, specially auberiene skewers, beef skewers, furikate prawn toasts. My special favourites (as a sweet tooth) were of course the desserts though, even my partner couldn't put the spoon down (he usually is not much into the sweet stuff).

I came for a treat meal, for my 30th. The menu was relatively small, but the dishes available were flawless. We asked for recommendations from our waitress for food and drinks and she was a fountain of knowledge. She gave us everything we needed to know about the entire menu and that level of service really shows what a personal experience, dining in this restaurant is. We will definitely be back!

Located down a small side street that can be off putting since another business keeps their bins alongside it. Fortunately, once inside and up, a minimal but smart space opens up. I walked in for a snack at the counter. I wasn’t terribly fond of the drink I had but respect that interesting drinks will win some and lose others.

We visited today for the lunch menu, as it is walk in only we were put on a waiting list and sent to bar for a cheeky wine and cocktail. The wait was approx 45mins but we waited less than half an hour! We ordered soo much food and it was all outstanding! Starters we ordered miso soup which was a special, plate of pickles and edamame. All packed with amazing flavour! The mains we had were, the chicken skewers, raw salmon, beef skewers, sweetcorn fritters and 2 specials, pork belly skewers and pork with miso butter! All of this food was incredible like nothing we have had before! We had to round it off with a dessert and we chose the matcha cheesecake and amazake cherry and almond and both were devine! We weren't drinking but the drinks menu looked great! Loads of Japanese whisky to chose from and beers! The service was quick and friendly. The staff were very knowledgeable and chatty! I loved the decor it was simple but effective (loved all the serving plates) If I could give more than 5 I would! Will definitely be returning! Well worth the money and wait!

One of the best meals I've ever had. Not saying that lightly either, from being seated quickly and starting with some amazing cocktails each dish we ordered was as my other half said "a perfect bite" each dish was incredible balancing sweet, spicy, salty and umami. The prawn toast was perfectly crisp with the softest smoothest prawn. With the topping adding extra flavour. We also had the pork belly, which was amplified with the squeeze of citrus. As it was a birthday meal we tried the duck hearts, tuna and pork shoulder. All of which were incredible. Duck hearts were something I've never tried but they were really an experience, with a sauce that highlighted the meaty flavour they were truly something I've never had. But I would again. The tuna was my favourite, the sauce it was in showed how fresh the fish was and the caviar added subtle tones. To finish was tira miso and matcha cheesecake. Just so good. Would recommend this to anyone who wants some of the best Japanese food.
