Bonzai in Nottingham

The food was amazing! Great value for money with real reasonable portion sizes! The staff were also very friendly and helpful with catering to our gluten allergy and vegan choices. Amazing experience and would highly recommend!!!

It’s my first time visiting this restaurant, and I’m really impressed. The service is excellent, the food is just to my taste, and the dishes are served pretty quickly. I’ll definitely come back!

I've had to delete my other review as today's delivery wasn't good. It took approx. 67 minutes to get to us. Deliveroo has a habit of updating it's times and saying "it's right on time", but 67 minutes is ridiculous for a 4 item order. Not the restaurant's fault, but the delivery driver wasn't able to read the delivery instructions and was snappy with me for not answering the door, even though he was at the wrong house. Food came cold. Kitsune udon had absolutely no extras with it. It was just noodles and seaweed. The broth was basically a watered down soy sauce. I've been unable to try the gyozas as they are not labelled and I am unable to determine which is meat and which isn't. The Japanese Style Unagi was OK but describe by my Mum as, "not anything special." Furthermore, it seems pointless to have checkboxes that say, "no spring onion, no egg, blablabla" when you don't even provide them in the first place. I am very disappointed this time around, and probably will not go back as a result.

Unfortunately I had to give a 3star. I've been to Bonzai a few times which I quite like the food there. Yesterday me and my friends went there for lunch and I actually recommend this place as my friend is new in Nottingham and she likes Japanese food. Shop is supposed to open at 12 but we were waiting till 5 past 12. We were not sure if the shop is open as the Closed sign still on but I think I gotta try just incase maybe they forgot to changed they sign to open then i pushed the the door but the the unlock anyway, 1 of staff walked to us and I asked if they are open with feeling unsure if he welcoming us from his expression. He placed the menu for us and walked away followed by we heard the plates been throwing in the sink so lound, probably not happy that we we interuped there lunch. (When we walked in seem like staff still had their meal before shop open which I understand that but the business suppose to open at 12. I'm not sure if they are care) . Anyway food is still good as usual just it would be great if the staff would understand service mind. X

Chinese-style Japanese food that you can eat in the UK isn't bad, but it's just so-so... The Chinese language on the menu is good, but the quality is better than Yoka Sushi. Ah, it feels like something is thawed and eaten, so I think I can make it too.

Despite the restaurant being completely full and people waiting for tables, the staff still took our order and got us our food within thirty minutes which is the fastest service i have ever seen. And our food was just phenomenal! We ordered the soft shell crab rolls which were delicious and fresh, 10/10! Then i ordered udon noodles with beef and teriyaki which were delicious and left my stomach craving more for the rest of the evening, in my opinion the best place in town for me. Will be back very soon

Excellent food. Will definitely return. Bonzai Yaki Udon was excellent. Bento boxes, beef teriyaki, hosomaki sushi etc all brilliant. Only reason for giving 4 rather than 5 stars is that 2 dishes were forgotten about and had to be reordered and we had a missing miso soup from the bento box. It was particularly busy in there which can’t have helped but I can’t not take that into account. That being said, great atmosphere, friendly service and every dish was fresh and delicious. Will be back.

Came here with some friends following graduation. Fairly quiet when we arrived but within half an hour it was completely full. The food we had was great, I had a rice bowl, the photo is of the ramen and then we had sushi on the table to share. Really was a great meal and a great price 🙌🏼

My girlfriend and I had a great experience at this restaurant. It’s conveniently situated right near the Broadway and made for a fantastic post-film meal. The food was fresh and delicious, especially the salmon sashimi, you can tell everything is freshly prepared with high quality ingredients. Pricing is very fair and portions are generous. The service was fantastic, the waiter was attentive but gave us enough space to enjoy our meal. When ordering we were asked about any food allergies or intolerances. The ambience was cosy and delightfully modest. My favourite parts were the unbelievably delicious food and the charming waiter. Overall I would heartily recommend this place, especially if you want to support a local business that serves authentic, delicious Japanese cuisine for extremely reasonable prices.

Our latest visit to Bonzai was for lunch on a dreary and cold boxing day. From outside the place looks very inviting, and inside it is warm and comfortable with good lighting. The food here is excellent, and serves some of the best sushi in Nottingham. The menu has a wide choice of sushi rolls but they also have a great selection of other meals in tapas size and larger. The staff are friendly and professional and the price is very reasonable considering the excellent quality of food. We've been here a few times and will definitely be back again.

The deep fried tofu doesn’t look very appetising (in photo). It tastes a tad bland. It’s not that it isn’t seasoned, but I think it lacks excitement in its essence. My udon broth is not rich, it’s very much sugar and soy sauce. Overall, food is just okay, or very mediocre. It’s not fun to eat but not a bad one if you wanna try Japanese cuisine.

Hands down the best food I have ever eaten. Service was very quick, couldn’t have been longer than 10 minutes from ordering to eating. The staff here are very polite and helpful, answering questions about the food and such. My personal recommendation is their bonzai salmon and avocado if you like sushi fried hot, unbelievable amount of flavour well complimented by the ginger cabage on the side. Presentation was excellent too. Staff were helpful and polite. Noodle dishes are also quite good, especially if you like to customise your meal. Price is maybe a little higher than some would like to pay for a lunch every day but it’s absolutely worth it for what you’re getting. Thanks for the best food I’ve eaten since the last time I visited!

I love love love Bonzai. It’s run by a family, its beautiful authentic food. The sushi is incredible, as are the bento boxes and noodles. All food is fresh and delicious. It’s our favourite Sushi spot in the city - great value for money. 100% stop to try if you’re a fan of Japanese food. They have tables in the road outside which are perfect for a sunny afternoon.

Food amazing but I don't understand why it's colder inside the bar then outside, I would happily stay longer and spend more money but I don't enjoy it in the cold , I hate eating with a big jacket

I liked it here, the staff were quick to provide me a seat and service. I had the tepanyaki set which allows a few different plates of miso soup (this was nice), sushi (a spot underwhelming to be honest), chicken skewers (very nice), and then your choice of main, I have chicken teriyaki, a good combination of sauce and chicken, nice and filling they don't under portion in my opinion. If I come again I would definitely like to try something else, perhaps the ramen or gyoza (both of which looks popular).

I would have give zero if I could. I came in at 6 PM just one table available basically in the front door. Very cold outside therefore was not an option, I just stayed there but because it is busy therefore you don't get any priority nor the care that other customers get. Sooo disrespectful! The table next to was served then another half an hour passed and no one to ask us if we need something. After half an hour 4 tables had been free therefore I've asked if we can move for obvious reasons not stay in cold basically in the front door always opening. Other people coming being served and had best places however I was there before! My reponse was to wait 1 min but this minute never came, she didn't even bother to give an answer! Again soooo very disrespectful! I just went to her and ask obviously why we don't deserve an answer and she replied that the tables cannot be switched. What??? I don't care how good is your food if your customer's service is zero, you are zero!!!

Booking ahead at Bonzai Sushi and Noodle Bar in Nottingham ensures you'll eventually get a seat, but you may still have to wait until one becomes available. The restaurant was quite busy on a Saturday evening, with the staff making a genuine effort to accommodate everyone and serve meals promptly. The food arrived in a tapas style, with dishes coming out at different times—our mains even arrived before my starter. The noodles I ordered were delicious, as was the tofu, but my partner found the sushi good, though not exceptional. Overall, it wasn’t quite the ideal spot for a special birthday meal. However, with its potential in terms of food quality, the restaurant could thrive if they focus on enhancing their customer experience.

I went here with a friend and we shared three different rolls, as well as the tofu appetizer, and we absolutely loved it all! It's definitely the best sushi I've had in Nottingham!

Great food especially enjoyed the teriyaki unagi in the bento box. The octopus starter I had was great even though I have forgotten their name. My advice is be careful the portions are generous and I over ordered even though I ate it all anyway.

Best ever. Took my boyfriend there for his birthday and he said it's the best sushi he has ever had. He loved the bento box 🍱 he got. The atmosphere is really good It has some Japanese art. I think it would really add to the atmosphere if they played some soft Japanese music in the background instead of the popular American or British songs. Still loved it

I always come for the soup noodles with udon, amazing every time Generous portions too very big! I've tried the spicy beef noodles 10/10 The BBQ pork noodles are also 11/10 so yummy and lots of veg Next to try for me will be the crispy duck noodles :) The staff are always so friendly and my udon was served fresh and hot as usual Would 100% recommend They also have halal options :)

La semana pasada estuve en una cita y pedí la factura. La camarera viene con el lector de tarjetas y recibos que dice el precio total £ 55. 40 para dos bebidas alcohólicas y alimentos. Mis colegas y yo pedimos el recibo del lector de tarjetas y la camarera nos acaba de decir que no puede proporcionar esos recibos porque el lector pertenece a otro lugar. Pero por supuesto, como ella está parada allí, siento presión para apurarme y salir al restaurante. No quiero que alguien se quede parado mientras trato de calcular una propina, solo dame un recibo para asegurarme de que todo pueda ser reclamado. (lo que ha sucedido varias veces)

The food was good, but I had a disappointing experience with the sauce. I asked for a simple sauce to dip my food in, as it was quite dry without it. The sauce wasn't listed on the menu, so I didn't expect to be charged, but I was surprised with an extra charge for a very small portion. The issue isn't the cost—it's that I wasn't informed beforehand. It would have been nice to know in advance. Also, a smile from the staff would have made the experience better. Please work on communication and customer service.

Yesterday I've took a trip from from Lincoln to see your place and celebrate my birthday. Food was amazing, young lady and young gentleman at the front very welcoming and friendly. Strongly recommend lunch set. Be careful with ordering extra starters as portions are VERY generous! If you can not eat all - ask for a takeaway - they will provide containers. Just perfect! :)

Went for lunch with my friend to celebrate my birthday and it was amazing! Sushi was devine, we ordered 3 different types of Futomaki and some edamame beans and it was just perfect. Can’t wait to go back and try more. Absolutely delicious.

Very disappointing sushi delivery today from Bonzai, sushi quality really has declined . We used to frequent this place and delivery used to be okay as well. Sashimi is not fresh. Shibuya was a signature in this place - today tastes awful and soggy. Expected more from paying £30/person. Will not order again.

The most recommended is the signature fried udon! ! ! A must order every time I come here! It's the kind of thing you want to eat every once in a while, and the salmon and sweet shrimp are also very fresh. Treasure Japanese Food Shop! Strong recommendation!

Went on a date with my boyfriend today, the food was delicious and we loved it so much! The service was amazing and the staff were so accommodating and friendly to us and the customers around us. Will definitely be visiting again!

El personal es amable y profesional y le dan su espacio cuando usted está comiendo (que prefiero cuando se come - en comparación con los mil millones de cheques de vuelta que se puede esperar en otros restaurantes). Los precios son excelentes para lo que obtiene. La comida siempre es deliciosa. Esta noche, me regalé el ebi ten udon (que viene con tempura) y luego algunos lados de takoyaki y gyoza que estaban deliciosos. Por supuesto que volveré (voy en promedio una vez al mes como regalo) ! I have been multiple times and their food is great. However, our last visit has changed our opinion. My partner and family members are vegan. The menu says dishes are vegan but what the staff/menu don't tell you is that vegan and vegetarian foods are cooked in the same place and oil as meat/fish products. We found this out as the server informed my family member when we were taking food to go at the end of our meal. He said "I tell everyone this when they're ordering vegan dishes." We had already ordered and eaten our "vegan" food. We did tell him that he didn't inform us about this information today or any previous occasions, and he looked down and quietly but with no lack of care "oh, I'm sorry about that." Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't eat there if you're vegan or vegetarian because of the cross- contamination with meat/dairy/fish.

Little gem of a place. Haven't been for many year but decided to retry after a lot of stuff new competition opening up in Nottingham Food was really good, could have had a few more Sake options, but to be honest that was the only minor quibble

My daughter had been before and suggested it, glad she did because the sashimi was about the best thing I have ever eaten (seriously) and the miso soup was the best I have had. The only problem is there’s so much I want to try on the menu that I’m going to be in there far too often now!

We visited Nottingham yesterday afternoon for my child’s birthday treat. We spent 30 minutes walking past restaurants - struggling to make a choice. Hidden behind some scaffolding was Bonzai. I recognised the name of the restaurant from my pre-trip Google search so we chose to eat here. Now, here is a lesson in don’t judge!!! When we first walked in, I felt unsure - we were seated next to a busy table so I opted to sit next to my child, but was asked to move seats by the waitress and we then placed our order. We struck up a conversation with the waitress, and probably kept her attention for too long actually. My child is learning Japanese and since the restaurant is Japanese, really wanted to know where the waitress was from - sadly, not Japanese! But very proudly Vietnamese, and super impressed at our language learning. Our food arrived - one dish at a time, and I don’t like eating before everyone has their food. The food was very good, my child opted for a pork noodle broth ramen, and declared it ‘incredible’! I chose Katsu chicken curry rice bowl, it was very nicely cooked and tasty. In all, our waitress was fabulous, very friendly, very polite and just lovely! I think she enjoyed our visit as much as we did. Customer service shouldn’t just be about standing around and checking if food is ok, creating warm connection in this way boosts the experience for me. My child was smiling all the way home! So, I didn’t take her name - but please tell her thank you so much! 💐

My girlfriend and I came here for a quick dinner and loved the food. We both like sushi so ordered the massive sushi platter (Yokozuna) - which amusingly came as a decorative boat! It was all delicious with great flavours, was fresh tasting and we'd definitely visit again! I had the Aloe Vera juice which was very refreshing, give it a try.

Came with a friend - I had beef, udon noodles and spicy Korean sauce; she had duck, rice noodles and satay sauce. Excellent and clean restaurant; friendly staff and great portions. Definitely felt very authentic and gave me vibes of when I was in Japan. The create your own dish is defo worth a shout; good prices for students 2!!

reserverved a table for valentines in advance, did not get past the front door, stuck in the rain for a good hour before we left to go to a different sushi place, whoever managed that night needs to get schooled on reservations, thank you for reading. had a table booked for 1 month valentine’s day at 8pm. arrived at bonzai at 7:45 in which there was a queue where people said they had waited over an hour in. we assumed this was for walk ins as obviously we had the reservation at 8pm but we are later told they had triple booked and we would have to wait in the queue. they offered to take our phone number and call us when it’s ready so we could get a drink somewhere. however, we never received a call back and when going back to the restaurant to speak to someone at 9pm not one staff member approached us and we were stood there for an additional 20 minutes. at this point we decided to leave as it wasn’t worth any more of our time. we were looking forward to trying this restaurant however are now really put off.

Great food and reasonably priced. Visited about 6 times over the last 2 years and its now mine and my sons favourite restaurant. Waiting staff are pleasant and friendly and love their level of service.

Food was amazing and service was great. The chicken/ beef is halal however they do mention that they deep fry it with the pork.

The restaurant was really cold, even the men in our party were chilly which says something! The sushi platter my friend had was incredible. I chose the Teppenyaki option and although it was good value it wasn't particularly mind-blowing; just standard food you might get from any place. E.g. spring rolls/samosas that were akin to Tesco frozen ones. The main reason for ordering this was that I am vegetarian and the menu is HUGE, and not very well labelled - I had no idea if my choice would be vegetarian or not so went for the safe option. Having said this, the young guy that served us was great and I should've just asked him what the sushi options were for vegetarians. The edamame beans come in their shells - don't be an idiot like me and eat it! Not good! You have to essentially pop the beans out of the shell, but of a faff and all the flavouring is on the shell. Basically if you're going to go here, take a jumper and order the sushi!

Hands down the best Japanese restaurant in Nottingham. Have had sushi at this place for at least 5 times and they never disappoint. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for Japanese! 🙌🏻

I've been visiting this place for years and it has been consistently fantastic!! Flavourful honest Japanese authentic food, the menu is large but I always go for the dragonroll sushi, salt and pepper squid (packs a punch!) and the noodle dishes. You also cant go wrong with the Bonzai platter to share....satay chicken is next level I could eat a bucketful! Thanks again for the wonderful service, the chef in the kitchen are fab!! Keep doing whatever it is that you are doing :D

Being a sushi addict and having tried most sushi restaurants in Notts, Bonzai is by far the best! I wouldn't think twice about going anywhere else for sushi, always 10/10 food and service, Dan in particular is always very polite and chatty. Favourites - Korean beef ramen, white tiger sushi roll, bonzai salmon & avo, sushi, red dragon sushi & beef terryaki noodles.

Bonzai is a total gem. We loved our lunch - Szechuan pepper prawn noodle bowl, miso soup and some amazing sushi. Tuna was incredible!
