Caro

Vino blanco no frio.

I stepped into this place without really checking up front and expected a somewhat higher bill but then also no fast food style sushi bar. Hmmm... Service was very fast and friendly but the quality of the food was mediocre. The taste of the dim sum starter was OK but you could feel that they were not coming directly from the steaming basket. They had been on the plate for a while as the outside was already drying. Miso soup was good. The chicken teriyaki bento was similar. The rice was not really warm and already starting to dry. The chicken teriyaki was OK. The wasabi, for the 4 pieces of sashimi, was served without soy sauce. The sashimi was OK. Overall I was a bit disappointed and will not do back.

We'd been to an art exhibition (blimey!) and fancied dinner. The car was miraculously parked and my partner spotted Koto. Result, we thought, as we both like Japanese cuisine. The restaurant is part of (and entered through on this night) The Grange Holborn Hotel, My view of restaurants in hotels was sadly verified. First, it had all the atmosphere of The Moon. None. There were two other tables occupied, otherwise, it was as equally deserted. The waitress was very friendly and doing her best, but somehow it felt slightly 'amateur'. The sake was OK - not great - but not bad. The Miso Soup was pretty average (compare it to anywhere in Soho & you'll taste the difference at once) but it was the main Bento Box that was the let-down. I ordered Beef Teriyaki. Oh-oh. The beef was tough. I mean really chewy while the rice was seriously stodgy. If I'm facing a bill of £72+ I expect the meat to be tender and up to London standards. Sorry, but I do.

I had dinner here during my first night in my London trip since it was close to the hotel and was still open. I felt lucky since I could enjoy my dinner. I had a japanese menu or obento that consisted of miso soup, vegetables salad, grilled eel with kabayaki sauce and rice, some salmon and tuna sashimi and a fruit salad. The kabayaki eel was not the best I've ever had, but overall I can't complain about the menu. The products were fresh and well done. Can't complain about the price neither. Staff was professional and nice. I do recommend this place.

Visited restaurant chicken Terayki bento. Very nicely presented that is where the experience ended. I was asked twice by two waitresses if everything was ok. I said no to both. They were not interested. The chicken was inedible not hot and oversalted. Despite this I was charged standard service charge. There are plenty of much better local restaurants I would definitely avoid.

I have traveled around Africa and a lot of Europe and ate in some real bad places. But none of them have been as bad as this restaurant, I mean I felt bad putting this but I was so disappointed and felt robbed. The waitress was lovely and she was very professional in her way and very attentive. But please don't waste your time or money on this place, it really gives Japanese food a bad name. It should not be allowed to represent Japan in such a bad way. The one circle which I pressed was purely for the waitress and that is it. TripAdvisor should allow negative circles just based on this joke Japanese restaurant.

We went past this place earlier in the day, and thought it looked nice. When we came in the evening, we had another experience. The poor waitress could hardly understand or speak english, but did her best. The food was another thing. Tiny, frayed pieces of fish on the nigiri sushi, unevenly cut rolls. Teriyaki salmon overcooked and dry, greyish tuna sashimi cut the wrong way so it becomes chewy. I had a tuna and rice bowl, and the tuna pieces were small, end pieces of fish. All in all, among the worst sushi we ever had. It's better at Yo! Don't bother to come here, it's an awful waste of money and time!

The gyoza texture was light and crispy, oyakodon was OK nothing too fancy just chicken egg rice bowl with some garnish of spring onions and seaweed..the only let down was the duck as it was very tough and dry and felt that it was not as fresh only to be covered up with the sauce to rectify by the chef.Overall the service was good and food was average

Not a bad restaurant just not a good one, decent array of sushi on offer but not always very busy so not much of an atmosphere, considering lack of customers the servers are a bit slow on the up take to order drinks or specials from the menu, I guess because of the conveyer belt they just switch off. Not as good as it was when it first opened but the sushi still passable, albeit at 1 pm the food plates spinning around had clearly been there for a while and there was not much activity from the sushi chef present on the day.... Went here because my partner and I are big Japanese food lovers. The interior looked really nice so we decided to give it a try. Waitress struggled speaking English. Received chicken gyoza before getting drinks. Jasmine tea didn't even have jasmine in it. It was Jasmine FLAVOURED tea.Ordered salmon avocado roll and spicy tuna roll. Both rolls were presented very poorly. They were really cold. So obviously pre-made god knows when and straight from the fridge. Rice was falling apart. Spicy tuna roll was rolled in chilli spices instead of chilli sauce inside. It was horrible and burned all my mouth. Imagine eating a teaspoon of chilli spices. It was disgusting. During the main meal nobody bothered coming and asking if everything is alright (we barely touched sushi) even though there were 2 waitresses and 2 tables only. Dessert came while we still had our mains on the table. We told the waitress about sushi and she called the chef. Despite the fact that he wasn't even Japanese he was actually African with a really strong African accent. He told us that he never got any complaints and that it's how HE makes it. He argued all the time and just went away without an apology. Lost appetite but ate dessert which was actually nice. After the bill came we noticed that they removed only spicy tuna roll. I refused to pay for salmon roll so the waitress asked chef again. He came with a really aggressive stance and started being very rude telling us that we ate the sushi so we have to pay for it. I told him that that's the thing, we didn't, we only tried. So he started saying that if people will come like that and won't pay he will close so we have to pay. After I told him that I work in a restaurant and I know my rights and I refuse to pay he walked away while I was still talking to him. Finally received my bill with removed rolls and could finally get out of this horrible place. Never again.

We waited ages to be asked if we would like a drink. They all came individually, all in all it took 25 mins for all four of us to get our drinks. The waitress could not speak English so struggled to take our order. Again we all received our food separately. I had noodles which were swimming in oil, all slimy. Our plates were cleared as we finished instead of when we were all finished. We had 2 beers, 1 glass of wine and a J2o. Noodles, sushi and a Katsu curry. It came to £101. I'm so not impressed. I don't usually leave reviews as I don't like to dwell on bad experiences but this time I really feel I must and warn others to not set foot in that horrible place that is more of a tourist trap than a real restaurant. I mean I feel so strongly about it that I shall leave another review in French to warn unsuspecting tourists.Whenever in the area my best friend and I usually go to a small Japanese restaurant in Coptic street where the food is good and the Japanese waitresses nice and friendly, but that day had been a long day and there was no time to walk any further so we just decided that that Koto place would have to do even though the decor was hotel corporate from the 70's and the waitress was not Japanese, nor was the cook (which is usually a bad sign)I ordered some scallop nigiri: and I was presented with 2 meagre pieces with a thin slice of scallop (not even a full one for 2 pieces of nigiri) topped with, just wait for it! Marie Rose sauce, yes the infamous Mary Rose sauce from the 70's! I had to scrape the industrial pink sludge from the nigiri to be able to swallow it Also on the plate was what I took to be the peelings of a carrot (did not taste of much apart from vegetable peeling, and I put in back on the plate) and a 2 cm thick slice of old courgette topped with way too much Wasabi. As I love wasabi and am quite partial to courgette I bit into it just to spit it back on the plate. And I mean it, I actually spat the whole thing back into my hand and back on the plate as the slice of courgette was nasty and at the very least a week old.I tried to go and get my main dish cancelled but was told that it had already been prepared. It was some freshwater eel Donbury with a bowl of miso soup on the side. The soup was disgusting (I added some soya sauce to see if I could make it taste better, but one might as well fire in a well) and the dish itself, well, I'm at a loss for words really...A sweetish omelette (was there really any eel in it?) on top of lumps of clumpy warmish, unsalted rice whose thick texture I could hardly break with my cutlery. I did try to eat some of it, because I had hardly eaten all day, but even as hungry as I was I could not stomach it.I mean, food that bad is beyond belief!!!And then they have the guts to charge you 12.5% for poor service. We removed that charge from the bill, which was still extortionate. So, all in all, if I were to summarize my evening in Holborn it was as follows:Pressed for time, we decide to go to Koto's, the meal was inedible, expensive and the staff couldn't have cared less (I mean I did try to cancel my main dish after I had tasted the starter...)Since my friend and I had hardly eaten we ended up in a nearby Tesco to try and find something to calm our hunger pangs and to top it all, we ended up arguing because of the bad choice we had made. Please spare yourself the aggro and the knowledge that you will be taken for a right mug.

If you are going to open a restaurant just to make money it's best you don't - you are not doing anyone a favour, in fact you may be doing more bad than good. This is perhaps one of the worst Japanese restaurants I've ever been in. The decour inside is not bad, although it looks like a hotel lobby (with elevator music and all) and the service is just passable. The food on the other hand is pretty bad. I wont say it was borderline inedible, but for the ridiculously high prices they charge here you could say it was terrible. The sushi was lazily done, not amazing presentation you usually get from a dragon roll. The fish was passable, it must have been more or less as mediocre as wasabi. The ramen felt like it had come out of instant noodles box, the stock was okay, there was barely any meat and it was overall really poor quality. It would be best if they didn't offer it at all. This place is best avoided, hopefully if enough people know this it will close down and it will rid London of another bad restaurant.

Can't begin to tell you how poor was, I've eaten in Japanese restaurants across Japan and had sushi near Tsukiji (those in the know will understand my reference). For a start, they do NOT employ sushi chefs — no chef in his right state of mind would serve nigirizushi WITHOUT wasabi. Consequently the nigiri fell to bits upon lifting it with the hash (sticks) - also that fact that you should ‘compress’ the rice to make it hold together. To be honest there was so many things wrong with this experience I think that I'll simply list this as avoid at all costs. The place is attached to a hotel as well! Bet they are happy...

The 20gbp offer comes with poor selection, mostly vegetable and fruits. No crab salmon or tuna. Taste is mediocre. The meal was subpar

We arrived there relatively early in the evening and were promptly seated. The menu was standard Japanese fare. My guest and I shared the Koto variety, which came with miso soup and rice, and supplemented it with an order of California rolls. The food was tasty. For dessert we settled for Tiramisu, which was more cake like in texture and not the traditional Dessert that one is accustomed to. It was ok. Service throughout the meal was efficient. As we were the only people there I will give them the benefit of the doubt that they would maintain the same efficiency when it was busy. The only beef I had was the adding of a "discretionary" 12.5 % service charge which I always feel should be left to the customer to add. To Koto's credit this is indicated on their menu.

Koto's on the ground floor of the Grange Holborn Hotel and so gets a real mix of clientele including quite a few Japanese visitors.Usually eat at Koto whenever I'm in London. It's nothing fancy, just good, standard Japanese food every time. The menu's a bit anglicised but you're in England. Perfectly acceptable Bento and Sushi. Only downside is that the sake's a bit on the pricey side.Service is fast, polite and efficient.

My boyfriend (at the time) and I visited Koto on our first night in London. It was my first time trying sushi, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.We shared a sushi selection and a chicken udon, as well as beer and coffee. It was reasonably priced in our opinion, and though quite late we were not made to feel rushed at all.

The service was excellent but the food not so.We started with Gyoza dumplings - they tasted as if they were reheated day old... (and if they were I can imagine they were pretty bad even when fresh)If you want to picture what these were like imagine 711 dimsum that you reheat in the microwave after a big night out - that would be fine dining compared to koto's dumplings. We followed this appalling course with perhaps the worst bowl of ramen in history. The broth tasted as if it were reconstituted powder (in fact it had to be - nobody could make a home made broth that bad!) - and the noodles were over cooked and mushy.Without a doubt the worst Japanese meal in history. I have not eaten anything in Mcdonalds for over 30 years but to be quite honest if given the choice between a meal at koto - and a happy meal.... I would sadly go for the happy meal (but only if I were on the verge of starvation and had no other choices)

Some years ago (14!), I worked and stayed in London hotels near Koto. With its good standard and delicious Japanese cuisine, it became one of my favourite restaurants in central London. This weekend, staying nearby, we went to see if what still there. It was and is, so in we go. Room to sit comfortably, service focused and polite, menu updated but still very Japanese. We chose a mix of courses and tastes, and as courses arrived, I remembered why I liked this restaurant. Food was great, presentation excellent, experience for me was very good.

It was nice and clean, the service was decent, the bao buns we had were amazing, the ramen was pretty good, it wasnt "slurp the rest of the broth" good but the noodles etc were good! The gyozas were pretty flavourless, but the cherry blossom lemonade was great! The noodles were big portions in my opinion so wasnt too bad for the price.

Whenever I’m in London I eat the Chicken Katsu Curry from wasabi. The one from this particular branch was as good as always. The portions might not be as big as at the one in Victoria, where it’s not prepackaged, but the taste is the same. The curry tastes like in Japan and is worth every penny if you ask me:)
