This cafe was a fantastic discovery en route a concert at the Early Music Centre. There was a huge queue outside Betty's so we decided to have lunch in a quieter part of York. Fossgate is still within the boundaries of the old city and so we discovered the Kiosk Cafe. It is tiny, with one normal size table for 4, and otherwise small tables and stools, probably very cosy with 10-12 customers. Anyway, it was fairly empty and we had such a lovely warm welcome from the staff there. The choices of Artichoke Soup and the most enormous bacon sandwich were absolutely delicious, not to mention the coffee. There was a fabulous selection of cakes had we had more time to linger. There was some interesting pottery by a local artist, and we returned later in the day to purchase some coffee mugs and Darkwoods coffee beans. Great warmth and ambience, really contributed to a fabulous day out in York

I have a shop on Colliergate and sometimes have to call ahead and run down to collect food and clearly since I need to get back to the shop I need to time it right. I've never been let down. My last order was a bacon sandwich which was perfectly cooked and served on lightly toasted sourdough. Probably the best bacon butty I have every had and the price is more reasonable than many York eateries.

We just wanted a quick breakfast as we had a full day planned so this place was probably the wrong choice. I had the tofu scramble sandwich which was also the wrong choice. It did taste amazing and it had obviously been cooked from fresh which was great, but most of it ended up on the table or on my lap. The ciabatta was that hard that when you took a bite the fillings would fall out the sides; which would be okay if I had a plate, but it was served in a box. I must say that the oat latte was one of the best I’ve ever had. I would have given 4 stars if we didn’t have to wait 30 minutes for the sandwiches.

This is my go-to place for coffee when I'm in town. To be honest I've never had anything else there, even though there are some scrummy looking breakfasts coming out of the kitchen. Fossgate is teeming with fashionable coffee houses at the moment, and Kiosk is anything but fashionable; anti-fashionable would be closer to the mark. But it is cool nevertheless, serving up it's wares on or in hand-made ceramics and seating customers on furniture that is reminiscent of my old man's allotment shed.I return time after time because the guy who runs the place takes his time and he'll give you a smile if you deserve it or not, and, ultimately, he makes the best coffee in York; no question, you won't find better.

Some coffee shops serve good coffee. Some are in good locations. Others serve you with military precision and can leave you feeling a little like a part of their revenue stream.
