I came to The Kings Head Hotel with my partner as I wanted to treat her to a meal as she’s had a very hectic few weeks. The Kings Head was always such a lovely place when I used to visit on a regular basis. However, things unfortunately have changed. We ordered 2 pints of Pravha at the bar and was served by a young chap who admittedly poured a good pint but wasn’t overly chatty, even when we enquired about food but he did provide us with a menu we could browse. The 2 pints of Pravha came to £10.60 (£5.30 each) which is a little steep as Pravha where I live is £4.35. But at least it was a good pint. We both ordered the battered pollock which came with chips, peas and tartare sauce. At £17.50 each, I was expecting it to be good. However when it arrived, we were left a little underwhelmed. The fish was tiny and there were only a handful of chips. Sure, everything was cooked ok…..nothing exceptional but it was good but the portion size was measly and at £17.50 we expected more. Especially considering the pub up the road does a Jumbo Cod and Chips with peas and Tartare Sauce for £17.95 and that’s a huge portion and far far tastier!!! We decided against a desert as quite frankly, we thought grabbing an ice cream from a shop would be better value. Also, I couldn’t help but notice a lack of locals drinking here now. There used to be a great group of regulars that drank here but they’re nowhere to be seen.Shame as they used to make our visit an enjoyable one.

We stayed at the hotel for the second time, but the Tripadvisor website won't allow me to put a review on for some reason. I am so determined to put on another review that I'm doing it on their restaurant site! We returned because we had such an amazing stay the first time, we returned two months later! Everything is just perfect- the room (number 8, very quirky, and so comfortable) the breakfasts are fantastic. The staff welcome you as though you are family. Nothing is too much trouble. And dog-friendly. The perfect hotel for us. Planning our next visit already!

Sunday lunch - the food was excellent. However, and it was a big however, the service was awful. The taking of orders was slow to come. The delivery of food took much longer than it should have done. The clearing of dishes was extraordinarily slow and was done a couple of dishes at a time and never completed. All the staff seemed to be interested in (and no doubt they were told to do this) was pestering for more drinks orders. Some but not all of the staff were young and clearly inexperienced. They need to be trained or there will be more dissatisfied customers.

The sunday roast lunch was lovely, however, the roast potatoes & yorkshire pudding was overcooked/cremated and there were no parsnips. We had visited this hotel when we were last on holiday in this are 6 years ago and had a superb Sunday lunch so when planning our holiday this year in the same area it was a definite must to have Sunday lunch there again. Well, we wish we hadn't bothered - we chose the roast Hereford beef which we had had on the previous visit and when it arrived at the table it was hardly cooked - I attempted to cut it but had to ask for a steak knife to make an impression on it...it was basically inedible and on telling the girl that passes for staff she told us it is says it's rare on the menu - a blatant lie! Roast beef should be cooked thoroughly not served red raw....perhaps a more experienced chef and better staff would be a good idea!

After huge disappointment at service in a restaurant and leaving we had nowhere to eat and called into the Kings Head on the off chance. SO GLAD WE DID. It was fabulous. Wonderful staff and the food was amazing, the steak some of the best we have ever had. It was the night Liverpool won the cup on penalties and being from Merseyside we were watching on phone, the staff kept asking score and joined in fun. The chef came out and talked with us and we congratulated him on his great cooking. A terrible night turned into a fabulous evening. Thank you Kings Head.

Have been a customer here for many years. However, sadly on my recent visit with a friend it's seriously gone downhill 😕 We tried to have lunch in the bar area. Only to be moved as tables were reserved even though they had no signs on them. We complained we couldn't eat lunch crouched over our food so a table was found for us in the restaurant which was fine. Sadly, the only food we could eat was the risotto as we are both vegetarians. When it came it was basically a bowl of stogy rice with a couple of mushrooms and a little of undercooked broccoli 🥦 When asked by the waitress if everything was OK we did complain. Almost £14 for what was in effect, a bowl of stogy rice, was too much. Both my friend and I left most of our food. We told the waitress we were unlikely to return She replied "That's fine!" Obviously not caring one jot that we didn't enjoy our meal. She then presented us with another bill for drinks which I thought we had already paid for. This outing was a serious treat for us as we are both pensioners on a very limited income. We weren't offered any refund or a complimentary dessert which would have been nice. The hotel is now very tired. It's in serious need of a refurbishment. When we used the facilities one toilet was out of order and the other had no lock on the door. We can't comment on the bedrooms The dining room used to be quite posh with linen tablecloths etc. Not now. It's now an extension of the bar. Not a good experience 😕

From the very start of booking, we had a great experience. There are people who talk to you and do all they can to achieve what you really want. At reception, we met Jamie who had helped us with the reservation and all his colleagues were equally helpful and genial people. We had some special arrangements for a birthday and the staff went the extra distance to make it all work really well. This is an old and very cosy hotel with a great atmosphere. Lovely rooms and bar for quiet relaxation - don't change it. The restaurant was superb with some beautifully prepared and served dishes that were imaginative and delicious. Everything was a success. You are quite some distance from our home so we don't know when we might return but I have already discovered other friends who have eaten with you. We commend you all.

We stopped here for lunch on a sunny Saturday. Looks lovely from the outside, right on the river with lots of flowers and outdoor seating. It was quite windy so we opted to eat inside. There’s a notice asking you to wait to be seated so we waited as requested but we’re then yelled at by someone round the corner and behind the bar. We were loudly instructed to sit down. We sat at one of the many vacant tables and we’re again approached by the unfriendly member of staff. He demanded our menu choices. The food was bland and greasy but to be honest it was passable. The service however is terrible. Unfriendly and gloomy. The younger members of staff were fine it was the older one who I can only assume is the Manager. No wonder the place was empty. They are not doing any track and trace procedures, no details were requested.Probably best to avoid and choose someone else.

This place nearly gets it perfect, it’s a really nice traditional pub that is clearly ancient, but been kept bang up to date so loads of atmosphere in a classic setting. Different rooms, library, bar, snug, restaurant and popular with visitors and locals. Food was Devine, staff super friendly (3 bubbly super friendly polite girls on my visit) wasn’t too expensive either. Only downside was the speed of service......it was painful! Arrived 6.30pm the Restaurant was empty, only me in there, waited 40 mins before anything stirred from the kitchen, no idea why, ordered a desert, another 15 just to cut a piece of cake, You expect this in a busy restaurant, but not when it’s dead, I asked for the bill........another 10. We had our own table away from the restaurant to eat in the library, so that people who didn’t like dogs at dinner weren’t worked really well as doggie diners were seated in bar or library (same as lounge really) and other diners in the restaurant. In terms of location, we went to Yat Rock and across to Tintern Abbey both of which are in closing driving distance. The town of Ross-on-Wye is lovely just to walk around on a Saturday afternoon. Only thing to be aware is the car park entrance which is tight and tricky to get into with a large car but that is not a negative, we also ignored the instructions and missed the entrance!!! It is basically opposite Lloyds Bank and under an arch. We would really recommend and hopefully plan to come again.

Dined here a few times and I think there is better value locally. The food is nice and the surroundings are nice as well but it’s a bit cosy in places which is a bit disappointing given the quite expensive menu. The bar is always busy and difficult to get a seat sometimes but the beer is great and a good variety available. The small lounge is lovely and again gets busy. Overall I wouldn’t let anything put you off but you will pay a little premium, nothing excessive. The staff have always been really good over the years which is a testament to the management.

We had dinner here one night last week and it exceeded our expectations. It has a lovely warm ambience which is met by the friendliness of the staff. We arrived with our dog and they found us a lovely corner in a cosy room opposite the bar. We shared the fish platter to start which was huge and extremely fresh, then I had the goat (local) tagine and my husband had the pie of the day which was steak and ale - he ate every morsel despite our huge portions.

Visited for a light lunch and was made to feel very welcome. Despite a lengthy wait for lunch the food was lovely, our dog was welcomed and even treated with a few biscuits.

Friday night, not booked but they were able to accomodate myself and my wife with a table in a corner so we had some privacy. They did try to get us to wait in the bar area whilist the table was prepared but that was more of a typical drinking persons area and how long does it take to set a table – 2 minutes! The staff took our order promptly, though the time taken to receive the food was slow given that the resturant was being to thin out at 8.15pm. The food when it did arrive was excellent we both had the Shin of beef, it was nicely presented and was so tender.

Went in here for evening meal after seeing the very reasonable menu. Took a while to be served drinks as husband couldn't get to bar. Whether it was staff or locals every other word was f...! There was a young family sitting near to them and I was surprised a member of staff didnt ask them to stop swearing. We left as quickly as possible and went to Wetherspoons

This was a very good meal, food was excellent and the service quite good. I had the tuna steak, this was cooked to perfection and was superb. Other members of the party enjoyed their meals too. One minor gripe, we pre-ordered our meals and they took a quite a while to arrive, otherwise service was efficient and friendly. I would return.

Just popped in here as they mentioned craft beer, so we had a glass of punk each and sat in the lovely old bar which was full of character. The young lady who was serving was charming and only added to the character of the bar. If we were locals this would definitely be our local!

Went with family for lunch. Stood at bar for 10 mins to order a drink. Barmaid seen me waiting, I resumed she was busy until a smartly dressed lady walked in front of me when the barmaid immediately asked her what she would like to drink. I romptly aired my grievance and walked out. Whilst my husband was sitting with kids a barrage of f-words could be heard clearly coming from the kitchen!

This is one of my regular haunts and I can thoroughly recommend it. The food is always to a high standard and with exceptional service. The bar is cozy with a great atmosphere and perfect for a quick pint. Without doubt the best place in Ross for a drink, a quick meal or a proper sit down meal in the back room.

I've had a meal here in the past & wasn't impressed. Felt over priced & not great quality or taste. However the cakes weren't bad and a selection of local beers & cider.
