King's Fry in Plymouth

We moved into the area. Then stumbled across this place. Food is lovely and decent portion sizes. Highly recommended.

I visited today and it's just exceptional. The food is of good fresh quality and I love how non greasy it is. Just really nice food.

King's Fry is just the best Norman and Pauline... great couple...you don't just get cracking fish and chips... you have a conversation... First Class

They make the tastiest fish and chips I've had in Plymouth. Therefore, I am very satisfied with the taste of the dish and the size of the portions. The facility is located on the first floor of the stairs.

The quality of the light bubbly Batter & top tasting fresh Fish is the best of the best! I haven't found such perfect batter & fish in many a chippy!!! Seriously good & compared to Chippys tasted around UK on my travels (some famous Fish 'n Chips Restaurants in Cornwall too) , beats them hands down on the Batter & large portions of Tasty Fish This Couple know their Fish 🦈🦈

Probably the best Fish and Chips in Plymouth and a lovely couple who run it! We went for the large cod but honestly you don't need too! Portion sizes were excellent and quality was the best I've had in year! Proper old school fish and chips that hasn't bowed to the commercial door delivery scheme. Genuine, tasty and excellent portion sizes! Will be coming back!

A funny interaction about contactless payment and a lovely chat whilst waiting for the food. Such lovely people working there and the cod and chips is what you’d think of when you think of it, 11/10 you can’t fault it and after a long day of work it hits the spot. I love fish & chips and like to compare different fish and chip shops when staying in Plymouth. In the past (2020) I've tried Cap'n Jasper's, the Barbican Fish Bar, and Cornwall Street Fish Bar, but not King's Fry. I rated Cornwall Street Fish Bar then the clear winner out of those three, so this time I wanted to compare it with its neighbour in the Frankfort Gate area: King's Fry. I tested those two against the two branches of the award-winning Harbourside Fish & Chips in the Barbican (the main one and the gluten-free one). King's Fry came out my number one. * Basics first: King's Fry was the only one of those four that served me fish and the chips equally hot. That surprised me because when I ordered regular cod and small chips in the empty shop, I was dished up a solitary piece of fish sitting on the hot display shelf. Normally that means warm rather than hot fish ( I prefer it when the fish is cooked while I wait). But the fish turned out to be piping hot, so maybe they'd only just fried it when I arrived. This is a very traditional fish & chip shop which opens only at lunchtime and teatime. It's small, with no seating area, and run by an old British couple who know and love what they're doing. They must be over 70, so anyone who wants a taste of the old days before they hang up their frying baskets should pay them a visit. The plain little shop hides round a corner just over Western Approach. So only a minute away from Frankfort Gate, where I sat on a bench and unwrapped my haul--no box, no plastic tray, no grease seeping through. Considering I'd ordered "small" chips, the portion was substantial--more what goes for regular chips in some places. The chips weren't only hot but had the perfect texture, inside and out. And they were all good, not bulked out with bits of shrapnel. The fish was prime quality--a plump fillet, pure white, with large flakes that slid apart easily--no stickiness, no greying: FRESH! The batter was crisp--not too thick or thin, not soggy or greasy. It held the fish inside it perfectly for eating with my fingers as I broke pieces off. Zen! King's Fry is on this evidence a worthy rival for Cornwall Street Fish Bar nearby. (The Harbourside shops didn't rate close to the two city-centre ones in this experiment.) To be fair, Cornwall Street Fish Bar opens longer, has an eat-in cafe, and is impressive in its own right. But on this occasion, King's Fry edged it for me, and that's saying something!

Decent takeaway with friendly staff - might become my local takeaway!;

Never know when open. Change the opening hours daily if they open at all. What a way to treat customers who walk to you on the basis of displayed opening hours just to find it shut.

Good food,and prices,and a lovly couple run it,won’t go anywhere else for fish n chips.very tasty food,wev tried the fish and chips,and the mushy peas,battered sausage,and curry sauce,all excellent.

proper old school chippy ran by a lovely old couple. Best chips in Plymouth. only open Mon to Friday as of recently because after 35 years they deserve weekends off. because they are so good queue times can sometimes be 10 to 15 mins but it's worth the wait! Proper homemade chips made out the back!

Went there for the first time 2 weeks ago, would have never of thought to come here until my partner drove here. The customer service was amazing very open and honest and nothing was too much of a bother. The food well that was amazing. The batter was light and crispy and the chips were lovely too. This has to be the best fish and chip place I have been to recently. I enjoyed the food and would definitely recommend. Great place.

Moved to the area recently, seen some good reviews about this chippy so thought I would give it a go. Only to be greeted by an older lady behind the til with attitude, I simply asked “would your regular bags be enough for 2 or would you recommend the large” She Replied with “How Longs a piece of string?” & “I don’t know your food portions do i” I ask this question every chippy I go to for the first time and only had this attitude in 1 place - King Fry Plymouth. Fair to say myself and my partner walked right back out and went to West Hoe Fryers, so much more hospitality and friendliness. Thanks for being rude, you’ve just pointed us in the direction for the best chippy in Plymouth ( WEST HOE FRYERS PEOPLE) get there 😍

I bought from King Fry last night... the food was cooked perfectly, lady serving was great... really good customer service. The most stand out thing was the quality of the chips... they were with out doubt "the best chips" I've ever had from a chip shop in 59 years. Next time I'm in the area I will definitely be paying another visit.

I've not been to this chippy since I was a teen (over 20 years ago!) I just managed to go there as I was working nearby and its just as I remember, had fish and chips with curry sauce which was excellent! Glad the owners are still there doing their thing :)

Im from Newcastle so im a Expert on chip shops having been brought up living of them. I have lived in 6 locations in plymouth in the last 14 years and tested just about every decent chip shop there is. Kings Street Chippy gets my Vote as the best you will get. Firstly the portions are really big and the Large Chips will feed a small Family easily. The chips are fried in the right oil and the Batter is Amazing. The Fish Portions are huge and many times ive been in there when a customer has asked for a Large Fish only to be shown the Medium by the owners who not only has just saved the buyer money but enhanced their reputation as Honest. They are a Family owned Buisness who allways go out there way to interact with the customers when in the shop. Super Friendly Food is Quality Customer Service is second to none. Really good Prices

What can I say? This has got to be the best chippy in the West. Been coming here since Pauline and Norman opened up, back in the early eighties. I've tried all the regional winners in Plymouth and they just don't come close to this place. Proper chips. Perfectly cooked fish and real mushy peas.

First visit & this is a brilliant chippy, large chips are enough to feed Africa, fish & batter fantastic, fast friendly service nice sausage good curry sauce. I gave it 5 stars but in reality 6 stars would have been more realistic. Nice one guys keep it up

Called in just before closing at lunchtime. Have been let down by size of medium portions elsewhere so asked for large only to be talked down by the friendly owner who demonstrated how the large size was more than enough to feed a family. Very friendly traditional chip shop in high density inner city residential area near edge of retail zone. Will be back.

Quite average fish and chip shop. They have a £5 minimum card fee which I still don't understand why stores. The waiting time was around 5 minutes and the price was relatively cheap for a fish and chip shop.

Established for more than 30 years this is a busy central corner chip shop serving a dense residential area a stones throw from the retail area and the Union St zone. Parking can be tricky.

This is a family run business and I believe that they've been there for over 30 years. The owner is very friendly and always makes people feel welcome. Food is nice without too much of a wait. Prices are generally in line with the suburb chip shops. Top tip: they do and lunch time special of 2 sausages and chips for a very good price.
