We were excited to visit after hearing positive remarks from a friend, but our experience fell drastically short. The staff seemed disorganised from the start, and the service was slow and inattentive. Basic attention to detail was missing, making it clear that the management needs to do something to reestablish standards. The atmosphere was poor, and there was a severe lack of professionalism and care. Very disappointing overall, especially when the location is very attractive

We live locally and have seen numerous changes of staff in the bar and restaurante over the last 3 years. This evening we ate dinner and celebrated a birthday. On the whole the experience was very pleasant except for a couple of things which management need to be aware of. Drinks at the bar were fine. Supper was delicious except for a couple of issues on our main and dessert courses. The chef/waiting staff forgot our vegetables. “We are so sorry we can assure you we have taken the vegetables off the bill”. NO - either make sure the team is working well not to forget, or take the forgotten item from the bill and offer compensation - a glass of something or a dessert! Dessert - we ordered pannacota with. The pannacota was buried under a heavy scoop of sorbet, we lost the pannacota. Come on, this eating house can do better than that! When paying “restaurant prices, expect the same level of service and quality”. I hope this is read by management and they improve their level of service. The actual hotel and restaurante is delightful, in a delightful village.

We stayed here for one night enroute to the West Country, it’s an ideal stopover location and having its own car park is a real bonus. We had a lovely meal in the restaurant in the evening and the breakfast was very satisfying too. The staff in all areas of the hotel are exceptionally friendly and efficient, and it was particularly nice that upon check-in you’re shown to your room rather than given directions. The room, we were allocated room 4, was nicely decorated and came with large fluffy towels for the en-suite (always a big plus in my opinion!). However the room needed maintenance and a little extra attention shown to it and this is why I couldn’t rate it 5 stars … I so wanted to score it higher because of the fab people working there but I just couldn’t overlook some of the issues. The mattress needed a topper on it as you could feel the springs through it when lying down. There was a lot of mould on the ceiling in the en-suite and the toilet seat was really wonky. The skirting boards were dirty and battered, a fresh coat of paint would be all they need and the hangers in the wardrobe were a random selection, some of which were broken. If these were all fixed they definitely would score a 5 star from me. I’d also recommend they put in an information card or brochure about meal times, Wi-Fi code etc in the room as there was nothing giving us this detail.

My daughter and I stayed overnight for a family funeral. The service was exemplary and the food was great and an exceptional range of whiskey's behind the bar, Lovely staff. BUT I have never spent a less comfortable night. the beds were uncomfortable and I'm sure there was a bad spring in the mattress and the pillows were like rocks. The window could not open although the bathroom was clean and fresh the flush handle on the lavatory came away in my hand and had to be used with care. Room 12 needs attention.

We went to visit a nearby National Trust property and chose this place because the menu looked good.....it was well worth going in! I've never seen a better ploughman's than the one served to my husband, it included chutneys made in the kitchen. My fish finger sandwich was made to order by the chief who sends through to the bar for cider to make the batter. We had some home made ice-cream to finish (very unusual flavours) Brandy, White chocolate with Rosemary and Guinness. Once the flavour runs out it is replaced with a different one.

Booked the most expensive room. Bed very poorly, you could feel metal springs. The hotel light outside shines direct into bedroom and curtains too light. Had to hang our coats over the window and put pillows against window to get the room dark enough to sleep. Room is above the pub, so quite noisy. Manager unpleasant and not very hospitality minded. Not recommended.

First the positives: - restaurant in the evening was pleasant, food was good and reasonably priced - staff were friendly - especially the gentleman who runs the bar - if we had only gone for a meal the rating would be 4 But the negative was the hotel - first room we were offered had a ripped chair, black mildew on the bathroom ceiling and furniture which was more than distressed. We then moved to a better room in the main building but it was still a mess of old mismatched furniture, a broken mirror stand and a tiny TV which barely worked. The rooms are worth no better than a 2 star rating. A shame as it’s a lovely village and setting.

From the kindness and service given by staff to the quality of the food, this was my first visit but will most definitely not be my last (totally worth the trip from Taunton). Friendly welcome, with a nice atmosphere. We had a family room, which was spacious. The room was generally clean and comfortable, offered tea/coffee making facilities, toiletries, spacious wardrobe, dressing table and TV. The bathroom let it down a little, which wasn't spotless (mould/mildew in shower- could have easily been cleaned away with a little tlc). We had a comfortable sleep. We dined in the pub on 1 night, and the food was amazing. The breakfasts too were great, fresh hot food made to order, along with juices, yoghurt, cereal, and toast. The hotel has separate entrances to the main pub so if you need to get in late, they provide a key, which was handy. Plenty of parking too. Overall a good stay, and would return if visiting the area again.

I booked through Booking.com and paid before arrival, it was insisted upon that I pay again before I leave! I didn’t want to make a scene in front of family so I paid and they reassured the money taken by Booking.com was just a holding payment and would return to my bank account. This is not how Booking.com operates and under no circumstances will the hotel refund, even though they have been paid twice for the room.Don’t pay double if you come here!! We were suprised to find none of the staff wearing masks and patrons also seemed to walk around holding their masks in their hands, so we were not sure how compliant the pub really was with the Covid Safety rules.Despite them being really busy our order was taken quickly and food came in reasonable time. My friend had the Hake which was delicious. I had the steak, which was nice tasting, but had gristle through it and was not cooked as I had requested. I am sure if I could have got hold of a member of staff something would have been done about it, but I didn't want to make too much fuss. Chips were great! I visited this pub for a meal with a few friends. As the only vegetarian, I was disappointed to find my choices were the same price if not more expensive than the meat/fish options yet the portion sizes were tiny. I admit, I have an appetite but even my friends commented on the lack of food on my plate. It’s a shame as the flavours and presentation were great. For reference, I had the squash fondant main (with cous cous, chick pea salsa, aubergine puree and basil oil) - the fondant was approximately 7cm diameter, 1.5cm deep - the accompaniments were also small in quantity. By contrast, the fish and chips (priced at £1 less) looked good value; likewise the lamb burger and chips. Chef - Please note, some vegetarians do have an appetite!

We visited the Kings Arms in Montacute for drinks, whilst staying in a nearby National Trust cottage. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. They have given careful consideration to reopening after lockdown and we felt very confident in their COVID precautions. Drinks are brought to the table, contact tracing is in place and the staff are very careful about their use of PPE. That doesn't stop them being very friendly - we had some very useful sightseeing tips.At the bar, they do an excellent pint of Taylor's Landlord; something of a rarity in these parts, but very well-kept. I'm told the gin and the wine was very good, also. We liked it so much we came back again for lunch. We just ordered sandwiches from the menu - but actually, they were really, really excellent. Possibly the best bacon, brie and cranberry I've had in a long time. Attention to detail had some into even the little things; an excellent side salad, home cooked fries - even the chutney was prepared in house by the chef and it had been available by the jar, we'd have taken some home! Our only regret is that we weren't straying in the area for longer. The restaurant isn't open every night and we didn't have a free evening to visit. Otherwise, we would have definitely booked for dinner. Montacute is a lovely village in a delightful part of the country and the Kings Arms has given us another good reason to want to make another trip.

I celebrated my birthday here with family and friends and WOW...... what is there to say the food was out of this world, we were first given a complementary Amuse Bouche which did exactly as it should and got our taste buds going and longing for more. Our meal was cooked to perfection. The staff where attentive and we were certainly well looked after. We choose to eat in the restaurant which was more than comfy.Over all it was a very pleasant experience and I will not be waiting for my next birthday to go back.

Sunday evening when most local hotels do not offer meals the Kings Arms served a very good meal, in superb surroundings.

I went with family for a sunday roast and as a vegetarian I asked what my optians were for a Sunday roast. I was offered roast veg with cheese on top! I had little choice but to accept so as not to be a party pooper, but not only was the choice poor, but the portion was very small. On the positive side, its an attractive building in a pretty village and the staff were polite, but I would stick with a drink.

This was defiantly edging towards the fine-dining end of the spectrum, but the food was fabulous. A 3 course meal for 2 with a bottle of wine came to just short of £100, but the food was well-presented, imaginative and delicious. The complimentary amuse bouche was a nice touch too. We had a bottle from the cheaper end of the wine list and it was really quite nice.

Lovely decor. Nice ambience. Food ok. Staff were pleasant but not terribly efficient. My sandwich was ok. Served with a very few fries which were lukewarm. The shepherds pie was small, had far too much mint in it and really could have done with some vegetables. The vinegar had gloopy bits in it. I ordered agin with no ice. It came with ice.

Excellent stay and food over a long weekend celebration of a friend's 70th Birthday. The hotel management and staff could not have been more welcoming or helpful to the whole party who had taken over the whole hotel plus other accommodation in Montacute. Breakfast was served for the whole party on 2 mornings irrespective of where people were staying - all handled efficiently and cooked to order. Dinner on the Saturday evening was similarly arranged, also excellent quality and service. Rooms at the hotel are well equipped and characterful. All in all a welcoming and enjoyable stay.

Stopped at The Kings Arms as we approached Montacute House and it was lunch time. Only purchsed drinks and sandwiches but what sandwiches. Beautifully served in luxurious surroundings with a choice of chips or vegetable crisps and salad. This hostelry was beautifully maintained and well furnished with excellent service.

We were going to have lunch here after a visit to Montacute House but decided to only have a drink. The bar area is more like a hotel than a pub and doesn't have the local pub atmosphere. We can't comment on the food as we didn't want to stay to try it.

I genuinely have to applaud the staff. This chain has a particular modus operandi, which is a challenge in itself. Being both affordable and hospitable to the masses in tandem is no easy task. The Cerdic management can be commended on those it employs, namely those that stand up rigorously to the extreme varied volumetric patron numbers and the pressures that this produces, especially given the size of the establishment. It is not for me when the 'masses frequent on their evening of well deserved leisure' but outside these times, it serves my purpose.

Best gammon that me and the missus has ever had. Nice buttery roasties and plenty of vegetable options. Plenty of seating and car parking spaces. Nice large outside area for summer time food and drink. Staff were friendly and reasonably priced food. Downside was that the carpets needed a really good clean, but I'm sure that this will be seen too in the not too distant future.

Lovey village pub, very dog friendly! Food was great value for money and extremely tasty! Very relaxed atmosphere and felt very welcome. It also had Harry’s rhubarb cider on table which was a bonus, it went down a treat!

The Lord Nelson is our local so an easy choice for a family get-together to celebrate our ruby wedding anniversary. We had a table for 20 and took over the skittle alley which doubles as a function room. Everyone attending had a great time and the pub and staff received lots of compliments. They are all extremely friendly and professional, and Mark’s food is excellent. Not sure we’ll make the skittles team though!

Poor attitude towards customers. I went into the cafe and ordered a coffee. Paid for the coffee. Then I was told there is a 15minute wait. Manageress was called over to help with the refund. The girl at the till was nice but the manageress made me feel like it was my fault. They were busy she said. So how I am meant to know that? There were plenty of empty tables and I was the only person at the till! Apparently it is normal to wait 15minutes for your coffee. Really?
