I booked a table early in the morning for 7.30 later that evening. When I got there at 7.30pm I was told that they had left me a voicemail that they had to move my booking to 7pm due to a 'mix up' and were now unable to accommodate me. I had walked 25 miles that day as part of my coast to coast walk and had been looking forward to a good pub meal all day. I had no reception most of the time whilst walking so did not receive a voicemail. It would have been prudent of the staff to phone me again nearer the time to check I had received the voicemail, but that didnt happen. Was even more annoying the fact that I had got to Kirby Stephen at 5pm and was waiting around for my booking. All other places were fully booked so I had to settle for pizza from the local takeaway.

This was not the most appealing pub in terms of decor and ambiance. The corridors contained various cardboard boxes, the carpets were rucked up, and we were seated in a very sterile restaurant area with no ambiance/music and very basic functional furniture. However we did get a warm welcome and generally the service was ok - efficient, friendly and attentive, though the “dress” of one person we considered inappropriate for food service. Another server didn’t communicate - just placed plates down in front of us. The menu was basic pub grub but all the food we had was fine, well-cooked and hot. The steak “pie” actually turned out to be a suet pudding which my husband really enjoyed, however we heard another customer ask about the pie pastry before ordering and he was told it was shortcrust!!! (When it arrived he was complaining). Servers really ought to know details of what’s on the menu. Overall we felt the whole place was a bit 'down' and certainly wouldn’t consider returning.

We visited this pub for a couple of drinks and decided to come for a meal the next night. My partner had the steak and ale pudding (which was huge) and I had goats cheese nut roast. Both were fantastic and we ate every scrap. So nice as a vegetarian to get a good helping and a choice of mains, not just the one. The staff we met were all very friendly and helpful and we will definitely eat here again on our next visit.

Just paid a visit to this pub when passing through Kirkby Stephen and I must say we were very impressed! Stayed here before, different room this time. The room had two double beds and shared bathroom facilities. As it was not busy never had problems with the shared facilities, always empty when I needed them. My room this time was very cold so struggled the first night to sleep. They gave me an extra heater the next day and it made all the difference. The staff are friendly and the breakfast is basic but good. The cooked part really good although I usually selected only a few items as with my course didn’t want to be too full!!!

If you find yourself wandering around Kirkby Stephen and you fancy a bite to eat then this place is worthy of a visit. The Management has recently changed and you are guaranteed a warm welcome and friendly staff. The menu is not extensive but what is clearly on offer is good value, wholesome food. We only had sandwiches on this visit, but food going out to adjacent tables not only looked plentiful, but also smelled delicious. As a benchmark, it was clearly enjoyed by all eating because all the plates were empty when cleared. We shall be returning for a full lunchtime or evening meal, in fact The Kings Arms has rooms so an overnight stay is a definite must in the future, especially as Kirkby Stephen is ideally placed for both the Lake District and the nearby Yorkshire Dales. This is a dog friendly pub and Sunday lunches will no doubt be popular.

Four of us called in for Sunday lunch at £11.95 we thought we would have a really nice meal, how wrong could we be! Three ordered the rib eye beef and the fourth the honey glazed gammon. After quite a wait ( that was fine the meal would be freshly cooked) a gammon egg and chips was presented, we actually ordered the gammon Sunday roast I commented, no reaction. The the beef came, what a pathetic excuse for a Sunday roast, a scoop of mashed potato, three small new potatoes, a dessert spoon of cabbage and a tiny amount of carrot. The beef was very rare full of chewy fat, very tough infact virtually in edible. And a small tasteless Yorkshire pudding. We were never asked if our meals were ok, we were not offered a pudding no interaction with the staff at all. I asked for the bill and paid. My husband went to the gents and a group of young men were discussing how disgusting their meal was and they we're not going to pay. If the meal had been £5.95 it would still be unacceptable. We like the other diners today would not return!

After a 200 mile journey my family and I decided to eat at the kings arms. What a mistake! My husbands mixed grill came without 3 components and a bloody steak which was cooked without first asking how he would like it. My 2 youngest had " hot dog and spaghetti Mele " which was literally that... plain spaghetti with a hot dog cut up on top. My Sunday dinner consisted of Luke warm cabbage raw carrots fatty gravy an a thick piece of microwaved beef. There are no words to describe the Yorkshire pudding except my 7 year old makes better... so does Aldi ... finally my eldest ordered smoked salmon with spaghetti an adult meal.... she was initially presented with another " hot dog spaghetti mele " which was exchanged for a couple of slices of smoked salmon on a plate with a sad looking wet salad... after pointing out it was a spaghetti dish a cold bowl of spaghetti was brought to accompany the sad salmon salad.... at £11.95 I was not happy to accept this as it was not as described on the menu.... in the mean time we had all finished what we were eating from our grim offerings while still waiting for my daughters meal.... finally a kids size salted bowl of spaghetti arrived in a thin salty sauce with a few shreds of smoked salmon on top... not forgetting the accompanying sad wet salad on the side.....after numerous complains the manager/owner listened to our woes whilst appearing very sympathetic and knocked off the price of the kids meals...... £13.95 for a handful of spaghetti each with a hot dog on top... a complete waste of money an appetite.... avoid this place at all costs..

The place its self looks good from the outside so me and my partner thought why not, as we just camping near by and were starving. On arrival the girl who was supposed to ask us if we were eating ignored us so had to go to bar and ask for a seat we orded a mixed grill which was around the £16 pound mark and my partner got surf and turf which £15 (dumping some tiny prawns on a stake is not surf and turf ) and when my mix grill came I had a dry piece of chicken and a rubbery stake which tasted as if it had been frozen since the ice age and the plate was filled mostly with cheap undercooked chips all in all the worst overpriced food we have ever had !

We visited here several times during our recent stay in Kirkby Stephen. In the main the atmosphere was very pleasant apart from two occasions where there were several rowdy mixed groups whose foul language did nothing for the ambience of the pub. I have nothing against bad language however when you consider that this pub is on a walking /tourist route you do not expect this kind of behaviour particularly when families and children are in the vicinity. I would suggest the bar staff/management have a word with these groups (locals? regulars?) if they wish to get better ratings and attract more customers. The only other comment I have is that we were considering having a meal at the pub however they are very expensive for what is really bar food

My girlfriend and I visited the Kings Arms whilst we stopped off in Kirby Stephen during the Coast the Coast. We got talking with the new manager, Benjamin, who spent most of the evening going out of his way to make sure everybody in the bar was well looked after - I think he knew everybody's name in the bar by the time we left! He couldn't have been more accommodating. The bar had a good choice of cask ales and lagers, as well as all your usual pub drinks (including bottles of prosecco). The night was topped off perfectly with Benjamin out doing any pub landlord in the country! As we left the bar, we were stopped in our tracks by what I can only describe as a monsoon. Benjamin, not only sent us on our way with half our bottle of pressecco and the wine cooler in hand (to take back to our hotel), he then proceeded to lift the large umbrella providing shelter to the outside tables and walked us back to our hotel under shelter. Top guy and great pub!! Thanks again Ben. Ash & Gab

My friend and I decided to give the Kings Arms a try as it was our favourite place to eat out in Kirkby Stephen last year but we hadn't been since it had reopened recently under new management. The place has had a spruce up and looks and feels a bit more modern. We sat in the dining room and the chairs were really comfy. Both of us had the fish and chips for lunch and agreed it was excellent. Lovely batter and melt-in-mouth fish, twice-cooked chunky chips and even the mushy peas and tartar sauce were delicious. The generous portion size meant we were both too full for dessert. The staff were friendly and welcoming and we had a nice relaxed chatty afternoon. We had looked to go in the Kings Arms on the saturday but due to the vintage rally on the place was heaving! So we ended up going midweek for a meal instead and the dining area was empty for the majority of the time we were there (the bar area was busy though). This was fine though as the service was very friendly and we never felt that we had to rush or that we had someone waiting for the last bite of food to be eaten so they could swoop and take the plates as you sometimes get when it's quiet. The food was very nice, surprisingly so, and everything was piping hot. It was clear here that time had been taken over preparing the food. Definitley a worthwhile place to stop for a meal if you are visiting K.S!

We started to thaw as soon as we walked through the door. The greeting was warm and friendly, we were invited to choose a table straight away and our orders were taken very quickly. The locals were chatty while we waited for or drinks and food. The staff were very attentive. The food came and looked very appetizing and we tucked in. We weren't disappointed. It was beautiful and we soon cleared our plates. My only complaint were the roasts went to my taste... but my other half loved his. He then polished off a very nice crumble and custard. The food is good, mid range prices, nicely presented and served by courteous staff. There's a very nice sized ballroom to the rear of the hotel and a good outdoor space with a glass roof and an outdoor bar, lots of music happens there. Lunchtime on a October Friday was an unexpected warm sunny day and we sat outside on one of the many tables. Service was friendly although the waitress was unable to remember more than one thing at a time !Sausage sandwiches with onion marmalade with chips and salad were a great choice although there was almost a 30 minute wait. The Timothy Taylor beer was in great order. The only downside was the relentless traffic queue crawling past a few metres away.

Service with a smile and dog friendly. Food was typical pub grub, nothing fancy but perfectly edible and welcoming after walking the countryside. Lasagne was a cut portion rather than individual preparation, chips were too chunky (& not soft on the inside) for me so my husband & the dogs ended up with most of them much to their delight. Portions were on the small side so husband was quite happy I didnt want my chips as whilst his sausage was tasty not enough mash!

We were staying local to the pub and decided to go for tea. We were travelling with our dog so asked if we were OK to sit inside which we were told was fine. Ordered our food and wasn't too long before it was brought to our table then the waitress asked if our dog was allowed a treat and was brought a chew for her while we ate which we thought was nice. Food was very good and reasonably priced would highly recommend.

Have just eaten at the Kings Arms and was disappointed by my meal. I had the fish pie which was not a very large portion. However, what was worse was the almost complete lack of fish. There was potato with a fish tasting sauce but little actual fish in evidence. My dessert was reasonable and one of our party had a cheesecake which looked great. On the positive side the service was quick and attentive with food appearing relatively quickly.

We had steak pie with chips and chicken in a light batter with chips and they were very tasty. Service was very friendly and our little dog was allowed in. Would go straight there when we next visit the town, without a doubt.

We ate diner here on the 2nd night of our Lady Anne’s Way walk. Steak and Ale pie constituted of a beef stew and a puff pastry lid and base. Not particularly tasty but okay and filled a hole.We had to check if they were still serving at 8pm on a Thursday evening which maybe should have hinted that the kitchen was closing down for the night? Perhaps worth trying earlier in the evening. The two pints of Timmy Taylors Landlord was okay and the bar area pretty busy with locals so perhaps more of a drinking spot?

Friendly pub, which we visited twice during our short stays in Kirkby Stephen. The first night we ate there and enjoyed our meal. Services was excellent, good size portion, leaving room for another well kept beer without feeling bloated. Cheers!

I visited this pub a couple of years ago when it was a typical country pub with friendly staff. When I last visited this place on 23rd February 2015 it had been altered, but not for the better. It was not comfortable, and the staff did not have a clue what they were doing. I will not be going back.

We each had a prawn sandwich with salad and crisps and shared a bowl of chips today. The brown bread was lovely and fresh as was the salad and the chips were beautiful. Went down very well with a bottle of wine and total price was £25. Surroundings were nice in the restaurant side of the pub and staff were very pleasant. What more can you ask for? We will be back again when passing through on our return journey on Wednesday!

Very small meal for hikers. Extremely noisy. Slow service and very small prawns on the plate. Wished we had gone to the Mango Tree like it was recommended to us. Just other people in our party had already booked the Kings Arms.

We visited this pub three times during our weeks stay and enjoyed all three meals. The service was friendly and quick at all points in time and the food was very good. Some lovely soups on offer (such as hot and spicy broccoli soup - it was great), super home-made chips, good cuts of meat, nice pasta dishes and some excellent desserts kept us well fed indeed! A varied menu at good prices, coupled with the excellent service of Laura and Darren and the well-presented dishes of Michael (the chef) made for a pleasurable experience overall.

Stopped over at Kirkby Stephen for some lunch on the way back up from the South Lakes safari zoo. As it's a about half way it breaks the journey nicely. We looked at a few menus around other pubs and this seemed to be one of the cheapest for main courses. We ate in the dining room in a very nice, clean and tidy pub, greeted by a very friendly waitress who took our order of haddock and chips and a kids meal of chicken nuggets (his favourite). The haddock was excellently cooked in a very golden and light batter served with home made chips and mushy peas. The chicken nuggets were real breast of chicken in a very similar batter, again superb. Coffee wasn't brilliant, but it's definitely on the return to list. Haddock and chips, 2 coffee, and 3 soft drinks and a kids meal = £32

We've driven past so many times as we cut the corner off between the A66 and the M6, but this Sunday we decided to stop for lunch. The staff were friendly and the menu was reasonably varied for a Sunday lunch time. We stuck to the traditional roast and thoroughly enjoyed every bite. It was priced at £8.95 which was the average for most meals with their roast baguette and chips coming in a couple of pounds cheaper. Dessert was too tempting to resist and we were not disappointed! Sticky Toffee pudding with custard. Ice cream was offered as an alternative but it has to be custard with sticky toffee! The only disappointment was that they don't have a credit card machine. We'd felt comfortable ordering dessert based on the VISA sticker on the window in the dining room, but were left having to walk next door to the cash point to be able to pay the bill.

Called in for lunch with our two Jack Russells. First plus point is dog friendly in the very comfortable Snug - good start. The staff were extremely friendly and the service was both efficent and quick. I had the steak and ale pie and my wife the fish, both with chips which were cooked to perfection - crisp outside and soft inside. Really good value for well cooked and presented meals. We own a 5 Star B & B, so we appreciate great service and cannot fault any part of our visit - excellent beer also.Thoroughly recommended to all - we will be back!

We decided to have a trip out to lunch, drove about 40 miles to Kirkby Stephen and the family chose to have lunch in the Kings Arms. The menu was fairly limited but everyone made their choices and drinks were provided quickly. I had the steak and ale pie which was very, very good, my wife had lasagne which she said was excellent, my son had the steak and ale pie which he agreed with me was excellent with the quality and taste. My daughter had chicken nuggets and chips which were fine. We had a variety of desserts that were all excellent so we are very happy to say that our journey was worthwhile. The bill came to £58 which for four drinks, main meals with dessert is not expensive considering the quality and we wouldn't hesitate to return in the future,

Last year we visited this pub and couldn't get out of there fast enough. This year it is unrecognisable now it is under new management. We spent a week staying in Kirkby Stephen, and in our opinion this was by far the best place for food and drinks. The staff in both the bar and the restaurant area were really friendly and on the ball, the food was excellent and the new owner couldn't be more welcoming. The locals that drink in there are also good fun and more than happy to chat with you. They have live music on a Friday which caters to all different tastes and after listening to the plans of the new owner, the offerings will only get better, Don't listen to the negative reviews, try it for yourself!

While camping at Kirkby Stephen we came to the kings Arms for our evening meal.Cheeseburgers & chips for myself & son, daughter had cumberland sos & mash.We did not have to wait long, and the food was very good and nicely presented - chips in elegant baskets and not greasy. Burgers were excellent. Most of the meals were around £9 Only criticism - we had to ask for vegetables as NONE of our meals came with them - and a few bits of carrot and cali in a little dish were extra (around £3)

My boyfriend, who lives near, and i have only been to the kings arm twice. The first time we had two steaks for £15 and it was great the service was great. Food was cooked just how we wanted it. The second time, well it was just horrible. The service was awful. I had steak and asked for it medium/rare. First time it came well done so she took it back and said sorry and i was fine. Then it came back and was the same. My boyfriend at this point had finished his meal. Her customer service was awful didnt come and ask if was ok this time but i could see her looking over. We sat there talking for a while as she kept looking but not at anytime did she come over. As she could see i had left more or less everything. I like the pub inside but i will not be going back. If i pay that kind of money i want good service and the food u ask for. There are other great places to eat within kirkby stephen.
