Kingfisher Restaurant in Northumberland

Previous experiences here have been good. This time, however, we found it very poor. When buying a scone we were given only one small portion of butter. When I asked for another I was told that I would have to pay extra for it. The loaded potato skins were in fact chips with bacon and cheese on the top. Doubt we’ll be stopping off here again.

Meeting with family members who had come from the borders for the day we went to the garden centre for lunch which was absolutely spot on. We were served by Jane she was brilliant with the 4 very excited children and served them their ice cream with a huge smile and joked with them was so nice to feel welcomed especially with children. Thanks for a lovely lunch 😋

Stopped for lunch at 2.30pm. Full options were available. Staff friendly and helpful. Ordered a sandwich lunch and a minute steak ciabatta with rosemary chips on the side. All food served efficiently and with a smile. Food good value and well presented. Clean and tidy seating area which was cleared quickly and effectively by the staff once customers had left. Would definitely return if passing again.

What a transformation from the last time we visited. Clean, very friendly staff, great service and great food. Going to try it for Sunday Lunch next time. Thank you.

Had roast pork for Sunday lunch today. Meat just fell apart dinner was perfect .2nd time there for a meal. Good choice on menu suit everyone's taste. Highly recommend going. Staff very friendly and very helpful. In the restaurant and in the garden centre. I'll be going back again.

We have been going to the garden centre at least 4 times a week for a long time. I booked Xmas lunch for my mum and daughter and I It was terrible So disappointing as we were really looking forward to it The carrots and parsnips were burned. The roast potatoes were not freshly cooked. We had no stuffing or cranberry sauce .The after eight cheesecake had undissolved lumps of gelatine in it !!! So disappointed as we used to enjoy our visits but the standards of service and food quality has really deteriorated . Such a shame as it used to be good .

Omg called into this garden centre just off the A1 for lunch on way to Edinburgh. My wife had a sandwich which was half full of big lumps of onion . I had a bowl of almost warm soup . A side of frys that were over cooked tooth breakers . Worst lunch I have had in years . Would have complained but everything is in Slow motion .. AVOID

Having read earlier reviews we were a little apprehensive about our visit but we had nothing to be concerned about. The food, friendly service and surroundings were all absolutely fine. This is a garden centre cafe not a 5 star restaurant and we don’t share some of the negative comments that we read. Best advice is to visit and form your own opinions as we did.

Lunch today was made extra special because of the friendly, helpful and polite staff in the cafe who went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure the customer enjoyed their experience. The coronation chicken is exceptional and I had the pleasure of taking some home with Thanks to the whole team.

Nice cup of tea and the Scones where nice but have had better. Cheese toasties were a bit wet but Bro enjoyed it 👌 I think some manners 🤔 would have been good hence why 3 stars the staff in the garden centre are really nice and very helpful.

We had lunch here 8th October while on holiday near Berwick. We hadn’t eaten since the night before and were very hungry so we shared three sandwiches between us- cheese & pickle, tuna mayo and coronation chicken. They were freshly made, packed with filling and tasted great. We then had coffee with a Biscoff slice and a delicious apple pie with pouring cream and warm caramel sauce. The staff were friendly and efficient and we will definitely return next time we are in the area.

Popped in for tea & cake. They’ve reorganised the way they do things, used to be you ordered your drink and it was made for you right away. We ordered and were told we needed a table number, so got one. Sat and waited over 10 minutes for our order, the cheesecake was tasteless, the biscuit so hard I was scared the plate would break as I tried to cut into the base. Nearly £4 for the cake, definitely overpriced. Will we be back? No!

Here you will find the best homemade coronation chicken sandwich ever. You really couldn't force any more filling into it friendly staff and an approachable manager.

We are new to the area and popped in to see what it was like. We were very impressed from the first moment we walked in. Very clean and tidy. Very bright and airy. Real plants used to decorate were well maintained. We received prompt and informative information from all the friendly and professional staff. Our orders were taken and very promptly filled. The food arrived hot and well presented. It tasted fabulous and we could not leave without complimenting the manager in person. Well done to everyone. We will be back.

Complete change over in cafe. Prices are one of the most expensive! Seating is so uncomfortable. Had to leave soon after we arrived as backing on sofas are straight and it was so painful. Updated for convenience of owners, not customers. Avoid!

Having not been able to eat at the Morrisons Cafe, Tesco don't have one. one of the Tesco staff recommended coming here. The menus is quite ordinary, but fits the job, with a specials board as you enter the Cafe. I found a table and went to order at the counter as requested. This is where things went wrong. I read what I wanted from the menu, and was greeted with question after question as if I was speaking another language. The staff member recognised I wanted the fish, I repeated the accompaniment's I wanted, i.e. skin on rosemary fries and a salad. With a pot of tea. She came pack with do you want chips, do you want peas, Do you want a drink with that. Either the woman had a short memory or wasn't listening I don't know. When I said I have already told you what I want, she retorted. 'Don't be flippant with me'. At this point I put my money back into my wallet and walked out. She was so rude!

A beautiful spot on our trip south we had for lunch ham egg and chips it was really tasty the food was wonderful also macaroni cheese was delicious the jacket potato came with a lovely salad and the soup was delicious the shop also was reasonably priced recommend this spot staff are friendly and the eggs from here were really good

was so looking forward to one of the cafe's lovely bacon buns ... But the "New menu" brought two poorly sliced doorsteps of rather dry bread with a hard crust - probably the worst bacon sandwich I have ever had! Won't be back any time soon ... Such a pity I really enjoyed visiting that cafe and its new decor was lovely.

Messaged before we visited to check if they were dog friendly and was told they are but not in the restaurant - advised there was a heated outside area for the restaurant which sounded great. Visited the next day with my two dogs and yes they are technically allowed in but didn’t feel overly welcome? They have an amazing pet area but I was baffled when a girl working there rudely said that they couldn’t walk around that section due to the animals (rabbits, Guinea pigs etc) they have for sale. I mean they had the dog toys/treats right next to the enclosures so what did they want us to do?? Felt like leaving but decided to try the restaurant. The outside area was lovely even in the rain and the heaters were fab. Went in to order and they didn’t have everything on menu which was annoying but after ordering they then came out to the table to say they didn’t have another item that was ordered? Not very organised.

We both ordered coffee and cake . Service was very slow. I prefer weak coffee but my latte was extremely so. The cream cakes we chose came from the chilled cabinet which must have been on a extremely low setting as the taste and texture were totally ruined. Very disappointed

Our group went for brunch and noticed the revamped surroundings and change to service. The prices are a little steep (eg over £3 for a basic black coffee) but it’s the noise of the place that’s more offputting. The acoustics have always been poor here with possibly the noisiest coffee machine in the country in the background. Sadly the owners have taken no steps to address the environment & it was impossible to maintain a conversation at a private level. The food was average but the overall experience was very disappointing & we won’t be hurrying back.

This was a lunch experience I will not repeat. Upon arrival the cafe was busy but many tables were unable to be used as they were covered in dirty crockery. The staff walked past the tables empty handed several times and made no attempt to clear the tables. I eventually cleared a table myself. The service at the order point is incredibly slow and several mistakes were made with our order. After a very long wait, food started to arrive in dribs and drabs. Sandwiches were eaten before I eventually returned to the counter to enquire about drinks and the rest of the order. Staff made no comment as I questioned the delay in our order or when I had to return incorrect items. The milk for my tea was served in a tea pot which I had incorrectly presumed was extra hot water. This is such a shame as it could be a good place as the food was nice.

1st.. Restaurant... Not been here since last year . . Restaurant supposed to be redone.. yes had a lick of paint flooring & lighting but has no personality or warmth to it anymore . Not very nice sitting in.. back fixed seats far too high . 3 plants stuck in corner no saucers for spillage or overflow of water.. Hazard!! Appearances Bland, no atmosphere or ambience, jacket potato & tuna filling tasteless & potato barely warm . Cutlery upon entrance not washed properly.. Tables were left full & unclean.. Have staff on table clearing duty only,other staff serving only cook, serving ect.. you will find a smoother ship.. your staff look miserable.. the specials board was empty with no help from staff.. no incentive whatsoever.. folks & knives still had food on them obviously not checked.. condiments far too high up on dresser to fully reach.. Couple next to us had to ask for 2 hot coffee as the ones that was served were cold.. No order in restaurant or cafe as I now call it as it does not feel special or a place I enjoy being in.. And please don't just reply with we have not finished yet because this should of been finished before it was reopened.. You can do way better.. !! Very disappointed!! 2 out of 5... !!!

We’ve stopped here several times before and things have been ok. However I couldn’t believe the poor service we received today. Initially I had to wait quite some time at the counter where two staff were busy making drinks and stocking the counter. At least one of them must have been aware I was waiting but made no attempt to interact. At one point someone who had been waiting on tables came apologised for my wait and said I’d be seen soon. Eventually the person who had been stocking the counter came and took my order. I assumed the issue was due to staff working in strange circumstances due to the refurb and wasn’t too bothered. I ordered our food and drinks. A sandwich, a cold drink, a scone which I asked to be warmed and a double espresso with some hot water on the side, which I have countless times before here. So far so good. However when I asked that the coffee be served in a slightly larger cup, which I always do, I was told no as it would be an americano. I tried to explain that making a double espresso into a slightly larger cup then adding a small amount of hot water does NOT make it an americano, it more like a long black. I was however abruptly told it was an americano and she wasn’t allowed to do it. As she refused to do what I asked still saying I’d be getting an americano I just had a glass of water. After I’d paid I was offered the cold scone but I asked again for it to be heated. When the scone was brought to the table, it wasn’t warmed and I had to return to the counter to ask a third time for to it to be heated. The sandwich was okay but the salad was just leaves and red onion. Hopefully this is just a glitch due to the refurbishment and when the cafe fully reopens the staff will have been properly trained in customer service.

Always get a good lunch at the Berwick Garden Centre so we stopped off last week, and there was plenty choice and the food was tasty and with good portion sizes. Service was friendly. The garden centre itself was well stocked and they had a Christmas sale so we got some bargains too.

A dour place with dour staff who could benefit greatly from staff training . The biscoff bake was disappointing, its only connection to biscoff was a trace of a biscuit crushed and sprinkled very sparingly on the top. The internal layout is deplorable. There was no sense of artistry in the way goods are displayed. It needs someone who knows the retail industry to go in there and set them right .

We took the kids to see Santa. There was so much for them to do, including a giant snow globe and donkeys. Santa was fantastic and they got to pick there own gift. They also got a biscuit and hot chocolate in the cafe. Would 100% recommend and will be back next year!

Amazing experience taking our granddaughter to meet Santa. She loved her time with Santa and her present and we all had fun getting our pictures taken in the snow globe. We then took her for a hot chocolate and Christmas biscuit with the voucher Santa gave to her. Lots of Christmas gifts and food to browse and buy.

My daughter and I enjoyed a happy and relaxing lunch; curried parsnip soup, peppermint cake, coffee and earl grey tea, all served by delightful, friendly staff. We also bought herbs, spices etc from the shop. Thank you.

Food in general is nice. But very very expensive. Almost £10 for quiche & chips, ridiculous. Lots of dirty tables, very unorganised at the till. Slow paced staff. Drinks must be priced incorrectly because what they are charging can't be right. If you want a quick cuppa you'll be fine.

Gutted Bill was 45pd food was awful wanted my money back could of cried. Food tasted like from a dirty kitchen ,even the coffee was awfull

We visit the garden centre regularly and love their bacon rolls .we went this morning and really enjoyed it .we ll be back soon .

A garden centre that, like many nowadays, provides a wide range of plants, garden accoutrements, clothes, local produce, pet and wildlife stuff etc. etc. and of course the ubiquitous cafe. All very nice though. Well laid out, plants looked in excellent condition, the cafe was not too busy and served nice coffee and light lunches.

Nice Sunday Roast Dinner but for £12.95, served on cold plate. Lovely Yorkshire Pudding but cold mash. Cold drinks in glasses that were not clean, returned dishwasher machine blamed. Surely, a clean tea towel to buff them up.

Love this place it’s full of great items including fresh produce. It’s a great place to visit for quirky gifts and a choice of Scottish items being it just before the border. Well worth a visit here

The Garden Centre itself is well stocked both with plants and garden equipment and is a very pleasant place to walk around and browse through the plants and gift area. Staff are helpful too. The restaurant does a good range of breakfast and lunch items...

Paid a visit to Berwick Garden centre and bought lovely food and it has lots to shop for from shoes and nicknacks. Lovely friendly staff in a nice location.

Went fr lunch last week and gr8 left over Sunday lunch on Monday and it was very poor we cplained and told it will improve and tad the potatoan leeksoup was watery bland and very Porte cheese scone was not cooked it was dough inside...

We both visited the garden centre section, when we were in the area, reasonable sized plant area good selection of garden tools, solar lights, and other horticultural sundries,well worth a visit.

We wanted plants for the garden, and ended up with garden furniture as well as plants; also a fire-pit! as the prices were so reasonable. In between our purchases we had quiche and salad, with a large pot of tea in the sunshine; just lovely...

Excellent COVID arrangements. Very quick service from polite and friendly staff. My ham, eggs and cheicken was excellent with really good quality ham. My husband's burger was very good too with a proper cheese topping. Will be back.

Visited for coffee and hot rolls while on holiday in the area. I've eaten here before and enjoyed it, but we were disappointed this time. My roll was unbuttered, with no butter offered. Might not have mattered if the sausages hadn't been all dried up....

Our group of 6 arrived ready for a drink and snack after an “aborted” attempt at a nearby tearoom. Whilst a couple of our group couldn’t get their first choice snack due to them having only one portion of the coffee and walnut cake left to satisfy our request for three, the lemon cheesecake replacement chosen got a big thumbs up. So did the the scone with cream, the strawberry tart and, of course, the final portion of coffee and walnut cake we had chosen.Drinks were well received too. The 3 “luxury” hot chocolate drinkers especially enjoyed theirs agreeing they tasted like “proper” chocolate was used and not a powdered version. In summary, everything was of good quality and reasonably priced. The staff were also very friendly, helpful and polite. I would have no hesitation in returning again on a future visit to Berwick. In fact, the Berwick Garden Centre, has been a frequent stopping point for my father-in-law for a number of years during his twice yearly trips to stay in Berwick. His recommendation was fully justified.

Visited here as we were in the area and looked ok online. When we got to cafe/restaurant we queued on the yellow lines as per covid guidance absolutely fine no problem, there were 2 couples in front of us and one behind. The waitress on the door said theres a 5 minute wait can you come back in 5 mins, we didn't move as we didn't feel a 5 min wait was too bad and we had a toddler who needed feeding and didn't want to lose our place in the queue, the other couples felt the same and the waitress had just taken a couple through so now there was only one couple in front, the waitress came back and asked abruptly for us to go away and come back in 5 mins so at this point I said no im not losing my place in the queue, within two minutes the couple in front were seated as then were we, it completely baffled us as to why we were being asked to go away and come back to basically lose our point in the queue...maybe we should have taken it as a hint and gone elsewhere?! We ordered sandwiches/toastie, quiche and kids picnic lunch. Very disappointed to be honest food wasn't great, quiche a bit tasteless, kids picnic sandwich was a doorstop of white bread and ham which is fine but the bread wasnt buttered so really dry?!bit odd!! I'm just glad the government 50% off scheme was in place as I wouldn't have wanted to pay more for the food tbh. When the waitress also brought our drinks over there was a tray left from the previous people, she took one look at it and didn't bother moving it or wiping table...not great in light of covid and just basically lazy!! We had a wander around the garden centre after and its really poor and tatty. We go to Mayfield in Kelso a lot and that place is kept immaculate. Needless to say we wont be back not worth a visit and cafe dire!

My wife and I have been coming here for the last 10 years. The quality of the food is always spot on and portion sizes are generous. The precautions dealing with covid leaving you feel safe.

My wife and I go to the garden centre occasionally maybe once a month, we have always found the staff very friendly,the food is of a high standard and reasonably priced, and the environment & views are very pleasent,the seating is varied with outside areas in the good weather. We've been going for years and it just gets better.

I would like to say a special thank you to Amy who, when I asked what was available for vegans, went through the menu with me and combined the curry with a jacket potato and side salad. She is really knowledgeable about different diets and allergies and I'm looking forward to my next visit as she has noted the growing demand for vegan food and more options will be available in the future. Other staff are friendly and helpful too, and the food was delicious - and at an extremely reasonable price.

My mother's "special" lunch of mince and dumplings was very bland, tasteless, lacking in any seasoning and not very hot. She hardly ate any of it. Charmless staff

Called in here for convenience while on holiday. Busy cafe, lots of menu choice with typical garden centre style decor and seating..... Self service or wooden spoon to place on table ready for food order to be waitress served.Quite a wait for food to arrive, it wasn't that hot, portions OK but we've had much better. Wouldn't return again.

A really lovely garden centre with very helpful staff. Had the Sunday lunch of beef with a giant Yorkshire Pudding two veg new potatoes and roast potatoes. Added bonus of a side portion of horseradish sauce. Excellent meal, great value for money. Thoroughly recommended

Visited here on our way to our holiday cottage, very good selection of plants, trees shrubs and ornaments for garden, variety of sheds, summer houses, well placed areas to browse around, lovely inside too lots of unusual gifts for the house etc. Worth a visit, clean fresh and tidy. Lovely staff, fresh food to buy too, quiche, scones etc homemade to takeaway. Lovely.

Been here plenty of times but food just seems to get worse and worse. Dunbar garden centre has the same menu but standards are much better. Soup was tasteless, served with stale bread, quiche was rubbery with old salad and inedible coleslaw. Staff always friendly.

We stopped here a couple of years ago so decided to stop and have something to eat and despite it being mid afternoon we still had a meal. I had a salad and it was really huge, my plate filled with a lot of fresh salad stuff and proper ham, not processed stuff so well done!We finished off with a late and then took a wander around the really spacious garden centre. Great for a break when you’re heading down the A1. I was just frustrated at not being able to buy plants as we would be staying in a hotel for a break!

Stopped here after what can only be describe as a motorway nightmare from Edinburgh. The ladies in the restaurant were so nice, especially Donna. Nice cup of tea and coffee, in fact my husband had two coffees, but then I couldn’t refuse as it was his birthday. Food quality good, portion size good, and price good. Called on the way somewhere else and decided to lunch here, glad we did,food was of a good quality and tasty. We had the jacket potato with coronation chicken, ham egg and chips, and the mac and cheese with bacon and crisps. All were good although we thought the addition of coleslaw to the ham egg and chips a bit odd!

Popped in on the way back to Newcastle for refreshments. Just had tea and cake but I have to say that the paradise cake was the best I have ever tasted. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

This was our first time to the garden centre. We were staying in Ashington and our friends live in Edinburgh. Berwick-upon-Tweed is a good half way for both of us. As two of the four are in wheelchairs this was a good place to go and have a lunch then a walk around the garden centre. There is plenty to choose from and if you ask about allergens they are able to offer advise as to what is safe to order to eat. My allergy is dairy, I ordered ham eggs and chips. A well sized meal, the ham is beautiful and juicy, the chips were typical frozen but edible, unfortunately the eggs were over cooked and greasy. But the eggs didn’t stop me eating the ham and chips. We also orders a large and small fish and cups with garden peas. Okay meal, but nothing exciting, the peas are tinned peas so have the dark green look. And finally a jacket potato with tuna and cheese. Again a typical over cooked potato but edible. The garden centre is easy to get around and sells other household nicks and naks from candles to glass trinkets furniture and food. It has a post office, but that only opens in the morning. In general it’s a nice place to walk around if the day has poor weather.

Visited here whilst on holiday in Spittal .Enjoyed looking round garden centre and my husband and granddaughter enjoy looking at the pets and fish also the reptiles.This is a regular stop off for my daughter when working in the area for lunch.Good choice of food made on the premises and the desserts are good value with a choice of coffees,to eat outdoors if the weather is good.Staff very friendly and efficient

We often stop off here on our way back home and this was no exception. The place was very busy but we managed to find a table and enjoyed our lunch - I had a lovely home made quiche! It's been refurbished since the last time we were here. The shop and gift section was also very busy with lots of plants being sold.

Went here for a breakfast- ordered full Scottish which was so dried up we could not cut through the the bacon or the black pudding! Such a shame as the restaurant is a lovely space. Not cheap either! Staff lacking in customer service. Sadly we will not be back!Garden centre itself is lovely and well stocked with a great selection.

East Ord Garden Centre is An Oasis just Off The Busy A1 , Beautiful Flowers , Gifts ,Garden Wear ,Kitchen Wear with Preserves mouth watering by the way The Cafe is excellent whether you're in for Coffee and Cake or for Meals . Don't forget to visit their pets

Scrambled eggs solid, could be cut with a knife. Bacon overcooked and hard, mushrooms wizened, amazed how such simple food could be so badly cooked. Will not be recommending this venue.

Yummy cheese scone and tea, delicious! Plenty of space to sit and enjoy , view of garden area too. Shop was as busy as ever but the staff always have time for a smile and friendly chat. Lots of lovely tasty treats on offer , even mid afternoon; plenty of fresh scones, cakes and tray bakes. Well worth a visit.

We stop here for lunch on a coach trip. Food was good but took a while to get served as it was very busy. Plenty of seating available with stairs and a lift to upstairs. Would recommend if passing by.

I go here most weeks lovely scones and coffee, friendly staff also very clean and tidy in the restaurant. Always plenty of plants to buy and a large selection of gifts of the odd birthday present prices vary always something to be found

Called in last week for a quick sandwich lunch however spent more time trying to place an order than it took to eat the order when it arrived.Ridiculous that a venue of this size only had one counter assistant at lunchtime not only taking orders but having to stop,taking orders in order to make hot drinks etc.Bad management that is costing you money as it was evident that you appear to have more than enough staff hidden in the kitchen that could assist your front line.The pricing of individual,items on your service counter is also questionable as I am sure that it puts customers of buying things,the first time in a long time I have seen couples buying individual items to share.The overall,surroundings are also a bit hospital waiting room like to,the extent the restaurant needs a major makeover.In summary this venue has massive potential which could be achieved by simply employing someone with good retail experience.

We visited today for a light lunch and to use our free pot of tea vouchers. We aimed to share a panini or toastie and a cake along with a put of tea.On the new menu displayed on the wall there was an item for a Trotters Stottie. We were drawn to this as we had not had a wonderful North East of England stottie for some time. We chose this bacon, lettuce and tomato stottie.To say we were disappointed is an understatement as we were brought a BLT in a large morning roll. We took the item back to the counter and explained that this was not a stottie as advertised. The waiting staff said that this is what they serve as it is a larger roll than they usually serve. I a man sure if I went to Trotters Bakers and asked to but a stottie I would not be given a morning roll.I would request that the menu is changed from stottie to large roll to reflect what Is served.We were disappointed with both the item and the customer service that we received.

Been visiting this garden centre for a few years now, and it just keeps getting better each year! Every department is good, from pet department, food section, clothing, gardening and personal gifts/cards to suit all tastes. Prices vary but you get quality goods for your money. The Restaurant always delivers good food, very well cooked and excellent portions. Prices very good, and you'll never leave hungry. Friendly staff covering all departments, too. So give this garden centre a visit! It's definitely worth dropping by for an hour or two!!

Went here for look around and had lunch. Very busy due to 2 bus loads of people being there, but plenty of seats available. We went upstairs which is very nice. Had the soup of the day and cheese scones which was very tasty indeed. Staff here are so so friendly. Lovely.

Visited the Kingfisher twice in a week as it offers good food and great service.Bacon rolls are great and scones are also good.Great selection of tasty cakes.Staff are very friendly.

We arrived for our lunch the 3 kids wanted sausage chips and bean to our amazement there was nothing on for our kids to eat they would not put themselves out and make it now they do breakfast with sausages it wouldn't if taken much to pop some in the fryer we won't be back

Visit with my elderly mother who has mobility problems and is usually housebound. Mum wanted coffee but likes it very weak. The lady serving, very kindly gave Mum a glass of hot milk with the coffee shot in a separate jug so she could mix it to her liking. This was so thoughtful and very much appreciated. Mum really enjoyed her coffee and outing. Thank you for making this such a nice experience for her.
