Four of us called in for lunch. Ordered Sunday roast, two steak pies and beef sandwich. We were waiting nearly 45 minutes for the food to arrive which we thought was strange as it wasn't full. No apology for the delay, two meals were brought and we were left waiting a while for the other two to arrive. The roast beef was on the tough side and a lot had to be left. Plenty of fresh veg and the chips were lovely. Will go again as like to support Cottingham and maybe try the fish and chips which looked really nice. Decor good now pub has refurbished.

Twice this year had a meal here. In September sat in the beer garden and had a really good meal. Tonight went to see the cottingham lights and popped into king Billy for a meal with my wife. We both had meat pie with chips and SIX veg. Again we were greatly impressed. Nice beer too, well kept and very friendly staff.

I called here with my elderly mother and my husband for Sunday lunch and what a wonderful meal. The small portion of steak pie was by no means small and was one of the best steak pies that I have ever tasted. The meat was plentiful and very tender and the crust thin and crispy. The chips were also wonderful and a good selection of veg. If you want a Sunday lunch in Cottingham make sure to call here.

Never really been into this pub before but whilst in Cottingham decided to stay for a bite to eat. I was really surprised how nice this place was. Staff polite and attentive but not in your face. Ordered 2 pies and chips (even though my wife is very picky when it comes to pastry) and to our surprise found it was one of the best meals we have had out in a long time. You could tell everything was home cooked and fresh, chips and pie was perfect with plenty of filling.

We have ate here several times prior to COVID-19 and the homemade food was always delicious and well priced, I would always give it a 5 out of 5. Since lock down has been lifted it is clear they have had to make cut backs (I presume, with an altered children's menu, my daughter missed the chicken goujons and my friend told me the fish fingers didn't used to be the style you get from herons ect - don't quote me on this). The fish was nice, my friend loved her steak, however the biggest disappointment was the change in your chips!! Your chips before were amazing, these today (appeared frozen chips) were not even close to great :(. I would come back because I think it could come great again and it is not the only place I have found have altered food since re opening, so I am guessing they are trying to recuperate losses somehow.

Called in for a pint - at first glance this pub is nothing special; there’s a lounge side populated with meal eaters and middle aged groups and a bar side populated with flat caps talking about brexit. The beer is good, and there’s no sport blaring out from big tellys, so it was worth popping in. Buy your pint, then continue through the bar to the rear of the pub. There’s a choice of two outside areas - the first is fine, and you continue on through the old barn area, which has been refurbished and is quite lovely to sit in and enjoy a drink. Through the barn, there’s another outside area with sparkly lights, comfortable seats, outside heating, and it’s a little hidden delight. If it’s a warm evening, it’s well worth walking right through the pub and setting your sights on the outside bit at the back of the pub. That way you can have good beer and somewhere quite delightful to drink it.

Eaten here a fair bit over the last year or so. Food is usually good pub food. Last few times I have been it's been disappointing. Haddock chips and peas was fairly poor. Fish was not white and fresh not very tasty peas were a funny pasty green. Next was Ham egg and Chips off the specials board. Nothing special about it unfortunately. Very few chips egg was solid as a rock not much ham and it looked like it had just been thrown on a cold plate with no care whatsoever. I told the waiter when he came over to ask if everything was ok he just said oh sorry and dissapeard won't be eating here again.

We recently had lunch in this pub and were somewhat disappointed. I had the fish and chips. There was no indication of what type of fish it was though I really expected it to be haddock. My guess was that it was one of the cheaper types of fish that is now on the market. Whatever it was it was very chewy and somewhat disappointing. The price was a little higher than my usual place to eat. Although a popular place to eat it is not one that I will be rushing back to.

Popped in one Sunday afternoon for a drink -excellent choice of real ales all well kept and was surprised about the number of people ordering food. Having seen a number of plates coming out we decided to look at the menu. Reduced options because it was Sunday and was impressed with the two sizes of meal on offer so both of us opted for themeat pie chips and mushy peas. To their credit we were told that it would be about a twenty minute wait and we accepted that as reasonable. The wait turned into forty five minutes and even the regulars on the next table were starting to comment. The food when it came out was fairly ordinary and uninspiring. They had obviously run out of the real chips that we had first seen as we were served oven chips that were tasteless. There was a staff shortage so the only waitress working was very busy and had to be helped out by one of the bar staff. Very disappointed as so wanted to like it here as I love the beer and the options in Cottingham are fairly limited.

On entering the front of the pub it is your bog standard pub with a small beer garden but as you keep walking through it opens up into a barn style bar with a bigger beer garden at the rear. I'm not sure if this area is always open as we visited for the 'Springboard Festival' which Cottingham hosts once a year. The bands playing here were good. There was a sign outside stating about the food being served but when we enquired we were told that they weren't serving so that was a bit mis-leading. Probably not the type of pub i would usually visit & seemed a bit rough but perfect space for the festival.

This is the best pub in Cottingham. It prides itself in 8 varying choices of real ales and ciders. Martin and Mandie, the landlord and landlady, are fantastic. The members of staff are all very well trained, and friendly. The food is always to a very high standard. There is a menu with all the old favourites, and a specials board which changes on a daily basis. Moving on to the function room: This is a medium to large sized room at the back of the pub, with a newly refurbished patio area. I have organised some parties here, and attended many others. I was actually present at the function which attracted negative comments below, by someone called Brenda. In the interest of balance, I think you should be aware that, a) guests were bringing their own drinks in. b) a large group of lads became so drunk and incapable, they were asked to leave after ignoring three warnings. c) I ate at the Buffett, and it was varied, tasty, and fresh. Brenda's comments were obviously revenge and spite. d). Martin the landlord is the most pleasant and laid back chap you could ever wish to meet. He only puts his foot down when he has to deal with morons. e). When you start throwing glitter/confetti/or other tiny decorations about, they are really difficult to pick up, and they clog the filter mechanism on vacuum cleaners. I can understand why landlords ask people to refrain from using them. f). This Brenda has only left two reviews, and both are negative. g) On the party invites, it stated the party finished at 11pm. People should have been prepared to leave shortly afterwards, and the landlord cannot be criticised if homeward transport doesn't arrive on time. Finally, I strongly suggest you come to "The Billy" and try it for yourself. Try the fish and chips, and try some of the guest ales. Then make your own mind up. I've been in and out of the place for 27 years. I have NEVER had a bad pint, and I have NEVER had a bad meal.

First visit for at least 20 years and not disappointed. On ordering we were told that as it was busy (the pub being almost full, always a good sign) there would be quite a wait. Our food came after about 25 mins which was no problem at all.Our party of 3 had meat pie, smoked chicken (both large size) and a veg lasagne (small size). All dishes can be either large or small choice! The meat pie wedge was large and not lacking in quality being full of tasty steak. The chicken was of similar quality both dishes being accompanies by a generous portion of veg.I chose roasties with the pie and my wife chose chips with her chicken which she said were equal to the best home made chips ever. The lasagne although a small portion was chosen was still of ample size and was also tasty. If I was to nit pick I would have liked the rosties to have been crisper, but as said nit picking.Drinks were also fairly priced, with both the drinks and food being served by welcoming staff.I don't often give places visited 5, but this was deserved at the King Billy.

Our discussions before setting off had ruled out a number of food options (no to pizza, chinese or indian) but the one thing we all agreed on was that we wanted some proper pub grub,Cottingham is full of traditional pubs so we headed there and then started to walk around checking the menus displayed at the entrances. The King William IV had just the sort of menu we were looking for with scampi, lasagne, bbq chicken, gammon and eggs all typically served with chips and peas. Our first ever visit to this place but definitely not our last, The food was great, all four of us agreed on this from the 12 year old up to the forty-somethings. Didn't bother with dessert but mains were filling enough. Wouldn't rush to return but nothing bad about it. My husband was disappointed with the soggy skin on the sea bass.

The King Billy is what a real pub should be: good beers, good, plain food and a great atmosphere. It really is like being transported back in time to when pubs really were the heart of a community. The King Billy is always busy and that's due to the efforts of the landlord Martin and the landlady Mandy. You are assured of a very warm welcome; being dog-friendly (in the bar) is a bonus, too. The fish and chips served in the lounge are fab! It comes as no surprise to me that there is a wide age range amongst the patrons, as the pub does cater for all. If you like constant, intrusive background music, slot machines and indifferent food, the Billy is not for you!

I went there, with family members, to celebrate my birthday on the 5th Feb 2015. I know the lunches are cheap but my scampi, chips and peas was more like a child's portion than an adults. The dessert was a fiasco. We ordered 2 syrup sponges with custard and two lemon sponges with custard. The syrup sponges arrived but the lemon sponges didn't. After 5 minutes I spoke to the bar staff and eventually, after the other two family members had finished theirs, the lemon sponges arrived. One was lukewarm and the other was still frozen in the middle. I complained and the waitress removed them. A few minutes later she returned to say that the kitchen had thrown both desserts away but the problem now was that they only had one lemon sponge left in stock. When we ordered 2 coffees + one tea the coffees arrIved but the tea didn't so I had to complain again. The one redeeming feature of this chaotic establishment was that I got a refund for the tea. Very disappointing.

Having read a previous review I wanted to share my family and friends' very positive comments. We have just celebrated a birthday there and had a fabulous evening. The staff were well presented, polite and could not do enough to help. We used the function room at the rear of the pub and it had everything we wanted. The buffet was very reasonably priced and the venue free because we had paid for the buffet. The food was great. The landlord and landlady were very helpful and went out of their way to accommodate our dietary requests. We were so impressed we have already booked for another party there later in the year.

I drink in the public bar quite a bit, but I didn't know the other bar, which generally caters for diners was a big is it is. Went in with my young family at about 1830 on Friday, and it was packed, but the staff found us a table. Standard pub fayre (Hunter's Chicken, Scampi, two common-or-garden kiddies meals). Came out very quickly, and were very enjoyable. They were, literally, as cheap as chips. Very diverse range of clientele all with smiles on their faces. It isn't going to win any rosettes, but it has absolutely no pretensions to either. Many other places in the village could learn a lot from the King Billy.

I don't understand some of the reviews here. My family have eaten in this pub regularly. The food has always been good and if you like a fish dish then its outstanding. The pub staff have always been, tidy, professional and friendly. excellent service. My parents who are both in their eighties are helped and made to feel welcome, they are not rushed and are addressed with respect and kindness. They are both very happy and importantly comfortable coming here. The menu changes with good variety offered. There are lots of different beers on tap. Finally, I have no axe to grind, I'm not known by, or related to the staff, but I do enjoy a nice meal out in good surroundings with good friendly service. I am writing this because I happened across some totally inaccurate reviews on here that as far as I can see, and absolutely do not paint an accurate picture of the eating experience in King "Billy". I do believe in credit where its due.Really the only thing that needs to be said is get in early, because the seats are often full to capacity on lunch and evening meal times!

We used to eat in this pub 4/5 years ago, after moving away we were back visiting friends and decided to go back. What a mistake! Firstly upon arrivial we were greeted at the bar by two scruffy people, who i assume were staff. After looking at the menu (a4 sheet of paper) we placed our order at the bar, we both ordered the well known 'fish & chips'. It arrived promptly, did not look well presented at all, upon tasting, the fish was clearly cooked in old cooking oil. Not at all pleasant. The chips were burnt and greasy and clearly refried. Will not be returning to this once lovely pub. Note to manager - staff uniform, not good a woman bringing food to a table in a vest and flip flops! Just wrong!!!!

It`s a pub! nothing else, I went to birthday party there last year (60) , buffet was rubbish, when the girl who had arranged it complained, she was verbally threaten " you paid next to nothing what do you expect" I`ll let you decide what to expect regardless of the price. This place should be thriving were it is situated but because of attitudes and bad food it is not the place for me. this is apity because the cask ale is of a good range and service quick.

We are around Cottingham most Saturdays and were attracted by the specials board outside the door, lots of homecooked food, fresh fish, vegetarian options if wanted. Gave it a try yesterday and I'm glad we did. The pub itself is very pleasant inside, there are lots of cask ales to choose from. The service was friendly and prompt, the food arrived quickly, freshly cooked and delicious and the prices were good - excellent value for money. Will be visiting again :)

My husband and I popped in for tea he ordered the steak and ale pie I ordered chicken curry with half chips and half curry, on arrival looked very nice but mine was just warm and I mean lukewarm, having dug deeper to see if it was any warmer it wasn't so I told the girl who promptly apologised, took the meal away only to come back to say the manager was talking to someone and would be with me shortly, after at least a five minute wait he came back to say that there was nothing wrong his "probe" was saying 60 whatever that meant but believe me it was lukewarm, I asked for my money back which he gave but first without short changing me and then pulling a face to which I commented that I didnt find his management skills very good, he asked why I didn't wait for my food to be re-warmed or wait for another meal of which I replied I didn't come out to have my food reheated because it had been served lukewarm and secondly I came out to eat with my husband together not to have to wait until another meal arrived by which time he would have finished his !!! His whole manner was atrocious and his management skills were non existent, consequently he was still disputing my claim even whilst I was on the street, I would never ever eat or drink there again, horrendous.

Have lived in the village of Cottingham for years but have never eaten here. On recommendation of my dad I visited for the fish and chips and they were sensational. Normally I wouldn't have fish and chips in a pub but this pub is the exception. Massive portions, lovely batter washed down with a great selection of real ales. Will recommend to anyone.

Happened upon this pub by chance whilst walking. Warm welcome and fast service at the bar. Excellent choice of real ales and a lovely atmosphere. The place was full of OAPs, all tucking in to a extremely wide selection of meals for £6.95 (large) or £4.95 (small). Opted for the steak & ale pie which was an excellent choice. The landlord took the trouble to ask if we had enjoyed our meal. An excellent location offering good food at a very reasonable price - we'll be back! No kids in the pub at all - great.

I celebrated my birthday lunch for 12 in the King Billy recently and it was terrifically good. The food was excellent especially the Fish and chips. The value for money and service was exceptional. All 12 dishes arrived together which is important when catering for a large partyThe lounge is currently undergoing refurbishment adding to its already comfortable ambience. We are already planning further lunch dates in this great venue
