After seeing the quality of the food in the photos and hearing it is a popular place, I decided to book in on bonfire night. There were me, my wife and 2 children. For starter me and my eldest ordered the scotch egg. I've never ordered a scotch egg before so didn't really know what to expect, but a dry egg and over cooked outer coating crunchier than a pork scratching wasn't what I expected for just short of a 10a each! The wife ordered camembert cheese with chilly dip and bread/toast. I'll be honest, it was quite pleasant to eat when you found the chilly dip amongst the cheese but other than that I suppose it's an acquired taste, like marmite, you either love it or hate it. The bread/toast though was that dry and hard, I'm sure Cemex would have been happy to supply it to persimmon builders as footings. The youngest ordered cheese garlic bread, he's 4, they forgot it! If any of you have children around this age you would know that, when everyone is eating and they're not, they produce words/noises that haven't been heard since Mr blobby was on the tele. After prompting, they finally brought the cheese garlic bread, it was one piece of sliced bread with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese which hadn't even been melted, and cost around £4. We're talking professional chefs that can't melt cheese. We sat for half an hour to be asked what we we were waiting for, obviously we were waiting for our mains. It felt like we were being pushed out. So the mains. I had chicken and chorizo gnocchi. chicken thigh, on top of gnocchi in a sauce, with chorizo pieces. chicken thigh was brilliant, nice and juicy, crispy skin, nice! The rest of it was so, so salty it would have been more enjoyable to drink from the Atlantic. It got left... My eldest had bacon steak, he left that as it had more fat than Gemma collins. The wife had a chicken burger, I mean, you can't mess it up, can you? Well...the bread bun, which hadn't been toasted by the way, was that dry and crumbly it could have been mistaken for your grandparents slipper. I folded it in half and it broke and turned to crumbs! The burger itself tasted off, and probably worse than the slipper...it got left also. The youngest had mac and cheese, there would have been more taste in that fore mentioned slipper. Bad, bad experience!! Maybe the fireworks were to blame, and they were too busy, but if that was the case, I personally would have shut this side of the restaurant for the night. The bill came to £130. So make of that what you will for that type of food, and messed up the complete order from start to finish. They knocked of £60 as an acceptance of the poor experience we'd had. So still cost £80 for meals that never got eaten. Honestly, I like to give the benefit of the doubt, but this took the biscuit, so won't be getting another visit.

Bone dry beef roast - appalling. It was my father in laws birthday and we didn’t want to make a fuss. The tables were sticky and roast was below average. The beef which is the main part of roast was dry and chewy. Unacceptable at this price point. Made a comment to the waiter who then brought the bill with a service charge on. Very disappointed, won’t be returning.

Visited for lunch with 2 family members. We had fish and chips, pie and chips and a steak ciabatta. The meals are on the more expensive side, but the portion sizes are nice and the food was in the main good quality. Service was also friendly and efficient. The steak ciabatta was ordered medium, and it came as ordered, but unfortunately the steak was tough. I think probably rump steak isn't the best cut for this meal. The other 2 meals were very tasty.

Lovely meal with friends. Sat in the dining room had our own choice of table next to the window. Staff were friendly and offered to help with menu choice if we required it. Nice good and more than adequate portions. The only slight criticism was that as soon as we had finished our meal we were asked if we wanted our bill when we wanted to sit and chat for longer (the restaurant wasn’t busy) and we wanted a rest before tea/coffee so felt a little rushed. Nice meal though and will definitely return soon.

This is my third visit to this pub. Always been highly satisfied with the food, service and ambience. I was so looking forward to lunch with friends but came away highly disappointed and suspect they have different chefs. Hubby had pie, the meat was lovely but you need a very sharp knife to cut the crust, it had obviously been kept warm for some time. Soaking it in gravy helped. Friends had fish and chips which at best was cool. The waitress took them away only for them to be microwaved. Now the chips were awful, soggy and the fish over cooked. Although they denied any microwave was used the dish contains the peas was extremely hot, sorry to say we didn’t believe them and asked to see a chef, none arrived. Their meals were removed from the bill. My chicken was nice but small and expense considering it only included 2 small mushrooms and 1 grilled tomato, had to order a side dish of chips. It was nicely cooked. The menu has changed, not for the better in our view. Felt sorry for the 2 waitresses as they were exceptionally busy. There was a wedding on which is why were we understanding in delays but not the quality of the meals.

What was meant to be a birthday meal in a place recommended to us by others and blessed with a very picturesque setting, turned out to be so bad it was actually almost funny, save for the fact that we spent £110 on a one course meal and 4 drinks (cokes and 2 glasses of wine) for 3 adults and one child. Yes it was sunny Monday evening, summer staff are probably new and inexperienced, but some things are just inexcusable, and it was a quiet evening after a clearly busy day (not a single garden table was clear of glass, although only a couple were occupied). So here are the highlights. White WINE came filled with ice cubes, as if we ordered a G&T??? (we had it replaced). "We don't really have a drinks menu". Two items from the specials menu were poor. - Seafood & fish platter to share (£35) had inedible squid rings, almost inedible battered prawns and mussels in a bland sauce, no salt in either the sauce or prawn batter. Saving grace were fish goujons (2) and a decent prawn cocktail, but I was left hungry even with a £6.95 (!) bowl of side spring greens. - Ostrich burger was so overdone and dry that the person eating it, who never ever puts any condiments in burgers, had to pour some ketchup on the meat to make it edible. No one asked us if we were happy with the meal. Jug of water that was offered never came. Bill came with a 10% tip already added, which I have never come across in a country pub in the UK for a table of 4 people. Yes, it is written in the menu, in a very small print, and no, I was not going to go through the embarrassment (for the staff) of asking to take it off. The only saving grace was a decent white wine (once served without ice cubes) and Fish&Chips my daughter had (minus the mushy peas that must have been poured the day before, as they were stuck dry to the dish and had a crusty layer on the top, she doesn't like mushy peas anyway). It's such a shame as the setting is beautiful, but we definitely won't be eating here again.

Great venue for a bike night, hopefully the inconsiderate few will use the ample bike park. Bit of a faff with the plastic glass deposit scheme, not sure about the acres of astro turf which looks like it's seen better days and the septic tank can get a bit whiffy near the river. Otherwise the place is buzzing will come again.

Came here in a group for Sunday Lunch after having an enjoyable meal here a year ago. Sadly the experience was not repeated. The food was generally not warm enough, the potatoes seemed like they had been reheated from the previous day as had some of the meats. The people in our group who had lamb said it was very gristly and everything was generally quite bland. The ice cream place next door is very nice however so I would going there instead.

Poor quality Sunday lunch with overcooked, gristly lamb for me, bland chicken for another of us. Our order of spring greens as a side dish became another bowl of mixed vegetables (we already had plenty), and no understanding of what the item was supposed to be when we complained - some problems with the broccoli were mentioned, not sure how that affected something completely unrelated. It took 3 requests to get the bill, but at least the ice cream parlour (Saturday and Sunday afternoon only) was excellent.

Booked to come here for Sunday lunch and had roast dinner. Food was on the expensive side (£17+ for some meat with a couple of roast potatoes, a parsnips, mash and red cabbage with a bowl of seasonal veg to share between the table). Were several cask ales at the bar, but only Landlord was available at the time. We also ordered a portion of spring greens to share (£7), however this arrived as another bowl of the same green beans, etc that came as the veg with the roast, not spring greens. Both were watery and bland. When we queried this, we were told there was a shortage and there normally would have been tenderstem broccoli. We weren't told this when we ordered and no offer was made to reduce the price or remove from the bill. If we were told what this side was actually going to be we wouldn't have ordered it. Nut roast was quite nice, but chicken was dry and bland. Also had to ask for the bill three times over more than half an hour to get this.

Had to wait for our table was told "just a couple of minutes" and was over 30 in the end. When finally seated we ordered and the food came out wrong, this was remedied but one had to be sent back a second time to be resolved. The lady who served us was very apologetic, but the lack of clarity at the beginning and then the issues with the food soured the experience a bit. Overall, overpriced and disappointed. Had problems with online booking. Staff eventually sorted that. Lovely pub, staff friendly and helpful. 2 out of 4 of our party were happy with their food, other 2 not so happy. No veg served with a meat and potato meal, had to request more gravy as it ate dry, food not that hot as plates were cold. Sent a side order back as inedible. Halfway through the meal we had to go to the bar to fetch our own drinks. Despite two members of staff asking if the food was ok nobody asked us for another drinks order. To top it off there was a 10% service charge on top of the bill. This annoyed everyone and despite staff saying they could take it off, we paid it but won't be returning. With the price of the meal plus the tip they added, we were disappointed to have a box of cutlery on the table that anyone could put their grubby hands on. Don't even like this in a cafe! Seem to be moving in another culture with the service charges which we don't like. Happy to tip but at our discretion.

Ventured here yesterday 24/3, for a Sunday roast. There are 3 distinct areas to sit, those being the bar, orangery/conservatory, or outside. With the weather being still on the chillier side, we decided to sit in the bar. Within a couple of minutes of sitting, our drinks order was taken. The bar stocks a decent enough selection of beer, cider, wines and soft drinks. Upon the drinks being delivered to our table, we were invited to give our order, which we then did. Pork roast £18.95 Chicken supreme roast *2, individually ,£17.95 Child's chicken, £8.50 if memory serves correctly. 15-20 minutes later the food arrived to the table. Upon first view the presentation looked good topped with a decent sized Yorkie. Closer inspection & subsequent eating revealed two roast potatoes, which had clearly been either reheated or held at temperature throughout the day. Two slices of pork were tasty enough & a parsnip. Sorry, there was also a decent dollop of mash! Served a long side was a decent size jug of "Ah Bisto," and a bowl of mixed veg (mange tout & carrot & cabbage,) which were watery & not of a sufficient size for 4people. Largely the food was not as hot as I would have liked, which I would have commented on had we been checked back on. We were not checked back on during dinner. Once plates were cleared we ordered a second drink. After a few minutes we were told that the beer needed to be changed, which wasn't a problem, however the beer later arrived another 10-15minutes after this update. Pros-nice location Good car parking space Friendly staff Cons- the wait for the 2nd drink The food could have been better. I dined late in the day, however this is not an excuse for the standard to have slipped. The potatoes were under par & the veg offered could have been more plentiful. The food could have been hotter and at this price point I'd have liked for a better quality of gravy, not out of a packet. The roast is on the high side ££ I like this pub and will come back. I've been previously& enjoyed a steak sandwich, which was very good. Yesterday may have been a blip, so I should give an opportunity to rectify. It was a sunny day & possibly the kitchen may have been caught out by the level of demand. The damage- £104, with service charge added automatically to the bill. We subsequently asked that this be removed. We're not in America, it wasn't a perfect experience. I'm not one to be tight, but the items mentioned let down the experience, hence the service charge being removed. Had everything have been ok, different story, I'd have gladly left a tip, possibly more. Fix the few things mentioned & it'd have been a different story.

To be fair all catering establishments have an off day. So I can only comment on what I experienced on the Sunday that we visited. This is a lovely pub, in a great setting where the owners have obviously put a lot of thought into running it and fitting it out which creates a great ambience for the traditionalist pub goer. Now for the bad bits. Wine and beer prices here are in my opinion really high and having worked for a brewery as a sales manager for twenty years I can’t see how they can justify some of the prices they were charging. I had some Timothy Taylor’s at nearly six pounds a pint however it was kept very well by who ever manages the cellar. It was probably the most expensive pint of Taylor’s I have ever had. Ime glad I didn’t go for my usual house wine judging by the price of a glass. A little on the staff here, they have definately got it right bar staff and those waiting on we’re lovely and I can’t praise them enough. The food. Our party ordered the beef for our lunch and what a poor job the chef made of it. Yorkshire pudding was has hard as a biscuit through out and was inedible. The beef was ok if a little tough and un trimmed. Roast potatoes were the oddest thing I have had in a long time and I think and this is just a personal opinion that they were boiled first and then deep fried just before service. We were presented with a dish of greens that dried out very quickly and the cauliflower cheese was a joke, really watery and poor. Dessert was very odd, a lemon tart that tasted of lemon but did not seem to have any in it. It was served with a really nice strawberry sorbet that was unfortunately frozen solid in the centre which ruined it really. The only good thing I would say about this meal is the coffee, lovely really nice. One more little criticism please change whatever you are cleaning the table tops with or your cleaner as all three of the tables we sat at were very sticky. As I said in the beginning of my review all caterers have a bad day and that’s understandable. However at half the price we paid this food was unacceptable in our opinion and unless the value for money and quality changes here dramatically we won’t be back. In writing this review and critique I have tried to be both fair and truthful saying what we felt was good and what was bad. I have not been personal ar critical of any individual.

We love this place The only thing it was missing was a play area for the kids on the vast lawn, however, that has been remedied 👍🏻 The food is delicious, the drinks reasonable, the staff are kind and courteous One of the nicest, cosy pubs in the winter and beautiful setting in the mahoosive beer garden in the summer. Give it a whirl, you won't be disappointed ***update*** Just been for the Christmas eve festive menu The food was OK but it was served barely warm and not very plentiful to be honest. I would have expected more veg for a start rather than just parsnips. The ambience was not upto what I have come to expect. The fire was literally a pile of Ash and it could have done with a little more festive charm by way if fairy lights and music. Come on King William you're better than this. The kids meals were good though

With the place being in a rather lovely part of the world, and with a pretty fine menu that sounds absolutely scrummy when you read it online - you are beguiled into the perception and the reality of what is delivered when it appears on your table. We both ordered the Broth, which alright, but... Both of us ordered the Prime Rib of Beef that came with vegetables. For a start, on the plate it came with red cabbage with capers - which for a start, not too many people like aniseed as a flavour - especially those who have misspent evenings on Ouzo or Pernod - so absolutely astounded as to how that could have been sensibly chosen as a "veg". One roast potato, one parsnip, a smear of mash under the beef too and one Yorkshire Pudding. The beef was cut thickly, which is always great to have a good thick cut slices, however, there was a distinct blandness - as it didn't seem to have been seasoned in any way or form, in particular this is my favourite cut of beef, and one I regularly roast myself and you can surely taste the seasoning then. The veg selection that came in the side dishes - a selection of green stuff that seemed to have been overcooked accompanied with a number of heritage carrots - I didn't participate in the veg, but was told it was overcooked. Then when you are paying between 6 and 6.50 for one of the sides - that are good, but not great - you kinda feel you are being mugged off just that bit more. I think the owners and/or the chef need to either realise not everyone is pretentious to shell out £18.95 for bland beef and veg that has been overcooked and enjoy it because its in a "rustic" pub next to a farm. The chef needs to learn how to cook normal run of the mill carrots properly rather overcook purple and white carrots. Perhaps the establishment is out to attract the loafer and no socks brigade - or the ostentatious tweed wearer / pringles and slacks wearers, where they would love to Snapchat their lunch to their followers - and announce to the world the prices they paid, but for everyone else, there are cheaper, better alternatives out there that do a much better quality Sunday lunch than here. I also hope the "chain" that own it don't go on to ruin the Royal Oak at Tickhill.

Bad experience. Went on a Sunday afternoon at 5pm for a Sunday roast. Both roast and mash potatoe was rock hard as though they’d been stood out for hours. Paid extra £6 for 2 pieces of cauliflower cheese which again were solid with barely any cheese on. Shocking vegetables served. Staff didn’t care when we told them didn’t apologise once, had to tell them wanted the cauliflower taking off the bill.

Disappointingly average. Lazy menu and food quality. If I'm paying £50 per head I don't expect to have to dig my own cutlery out of a box on the table. No steak knives, and sugar for coffee seems to be an optional extra. The whole experience turned into just another pub meal but at premium prices.

Before attending the King William for Sunday lunch, we had admittedly looked at the menu online and recognised the expensive price tag- the most expensive Sunday lunch that we have ever paid for to date. That said, with the vast majority of very positive reviews on Trip Advisor, we thought we best go and see how amazing this roast was. Our expectations were admittedly high. Unfortunately, it isn’t anything massively outstanding. It was a good roast lunch, but nothing that we haven’t had before at a cheaper price tag. I can only think that because of its rural location, that it has managed geographically to lack competition. Or, perhaps a placebo type effect where the price tag makes people feel that the product is better? It was also served a little cool, and our cauliflower cheese side dish wasn’t cooked through- we couldn’t cut through the stalk with a table knife. My overall rating of ‘poor’ is not to say that there was anything massively wrong with the roast, but it isn’t anything outstanding and is certainly not worth its price tag. A 10% service charge was also added automatically, which did not mirror the service we received. That again is not to say that the service was particularly bad (although it was very slow), but the main staff cohort were younger adults (perhaps older teenagers), who cannot deliver a service that warrants a 10% charge. Most are still nervous, uncomfortable and inexperienced in serving, without the natural ability to create a warm feel that you might expect for 10% extra. In summary, not a terrible experience, but very much overrated for its price tag.

We found this place by basically stabbing the map for our usual Sunday drive out for dinner. What an absolute gem of a place. The food, especially the vegetables and Yorkshire, was as good as we've ever had. Maybe slightly pricier than other places, but what's a couple of pounds on top of a delicious meal. Excellent ales too. I can imagine how nice it would be come summer in the rear beer garden as well. Definitely one we will return to very shortly.

We were seated in the main dining room, which was extremely noisy. We waited ten minutes before they came for our drinks order, then another ten minutes for our food order. 25 mins later our meals arrived, all I can say is it did not live up to the description on the menu. Tasteless over cooked, roast potatoes like rock's. The beaf was anything but pink as described on the menu. Will not return.
