Awesome Thai in kent. If you blink you will miss this one. A lovely restaurant making some wonderful Thai food. I went to Thailand a few years ago: and I’m saying this restaurant come petty close. Great family run house with a awesome menu. Great food great service my group and I could not believe this restaurant gem. Well done.

We've eaten here many times in the past but not for along a time. I'm so pleased they survived to reopen. The food has always been great and this time was no different. The menu seems to have been updated a bit and I don't remember there being a Pad Prik before. That was great with prawns and not tempered by the coconut milk some restaurants add. The service was really good to. We will definitely be coming back very soon.

Have been going here for years, brought one of my best friends tonight for her birthday and didn’t disappoint! Thai is our favourite food and this small gem hidden in elmers end is a delight to visit. The atmosphere is cosy and content if that’s what you enjoy, the decoration beautiful and the food beautifully presented and tasty. The only thing I could possibly complain about is I could’ve done with a bit more rice, but otherwise delicious and 5/5.

we have ate at King and I several times before and the food has always been exquisite. For some reason on this occasion it was not up to scratch, food was more bland and very peppery, could not taste the curry dish or pork ribs, was very disappointing as it was birthday occasion, Considering the place is small anyway and there was was very few people dining that night because of the bad weather and covid restrictions, the food should of had more effort put into it. On previous occasion used the Taste card and got a discount and food was great, This time paid full price as they no longer accept taste card and was not at its best. Because we have dined there before will give it another chance.

Our favourite local Thai. Good food, nice people, utterly reliable. Our go to when we want to celebrate something or cheer ourselves us. We had their starter joint platter, as good as ever. Then Him Indoors has melt in your mouth beef, beautifully cooked, with rice and I pushed the boat out in what I call Tom Yam and a sea food salad. The white fish in the sea food salad was exquisite, and I loved it all. What to have next time - fish, or beef - I just don’t know. Because there will be a next time. Oh, and when you book your track and trace details are taken. V sensible. Tables well spaced, Be prepared to wait a little, because their staffing is not as high as it used to be, understandably. Also, book ahead. It was ( deservedly) thriving, no room unless you’d booked, though running a takeaway service as usual. Good luck to them: they deserve it.

Hi, I have been to this local quirky Thai about half a dozen times. Although we do like their food very much we have noticed in our last couple of visits that the portion sizes are getting smaller and smaller. We nearly always order the same with my wife. 2 thai green curries and one sticky and one plain rice. We try different starters and all are mostly ok. The last time we visited we each had 5 bits of chicken in the curry. A very mean portion size. I wish I had taken a photo. We like supporting our local Elmers End/Beckenham restaurants but we will think twice about going there again. It is a shame.

Visited this restaurant by chance as my friend and I were craving for Thai food. The restaurant is small. If you are looking for a great decor and excellent ambience then this is not the place for you. The food is good and tasty though. Service is slow as it’s just the owner who takes orders and brings the food to the table. I’ve been there twice. Learnt not to order sticky rice again as these are very hard and difficult to chew. Overall ok.

My boyfriend and I visited for dinner on Saturday evening, we booked a table and when we turned up they took us over to a table in the corner covered in bits of food. someone then came over to give it a wipe with a damp cloth. We waited twenty minutes to be brought our drinks, starters came shortly after - I had the homemade fish cakes which were bizarre, a really rubbery texture that I did not enjoy. We then waited over an hour for our main. I constantly tried to make eye contact with a waitress and even called out a couple of times but was ignored. After an hour and a half, where we had seen all the people who arrived after us having their meals served, I went over to ask about ours. The lady just looked at me and walked off. We asked for a couple more drinks while we waited for our food, again these took 15 mins and only seemed to arrive once another couple had ordered drinks which maybe prompted the waitress. So then our food arrives, the waitress comes over and just dumps the plates on our table without a word. I had ordered a red curry and when asked if I would like mild medium or spicy I chose spicy (which the waiter scoffed at) - there was not a hint of spice in this curry. The food was really bland which was so disappointing as we’d waited so long. Seriously don’t waste your time here - we were here for HOURS and not even for decent food.

Visited early on a Saturday evening and it was quite busy but by no means packed. Long waits for everything and forgotten orders for drinks and rice needed to be repeated. Endless wait to pay bill. It's a shame because we really like this place although they scrimp on the Thai ingredients more and more so not really authentic. For example the starter of muscles was meant to have a sauce with Thai basil and galangal along with a fresh chilli and lime dip but was actually cooked in garlic, soy sauce and spring onion with a sriracha dip.

Just returned tonight from our first trip to this restaurant. From start to finish it was clear as we were only a table for 2 at 730 that they wanted us in and out as quickly as possible. The food came quickly and it was ok, quite frankly there are much better Thai restaurants than this one in the locality. After our main course the bill was dropped on our table without us asking and we were practically forced to pay. The waitress then took our glasses and told us they wanted the table! Service poor- waited 8 mins for anyone to acknowledge us and then show us to our pre booked seats. Waited another 12 mins for a menu. Food ok, but lacking the ‘intense’ Thai flavour I was craving after days of traditional Christmas food, plus my coconut rice was burnt (the scrapings from the bottom of a rice cooker). Hugely disappointed by the dirty walls in this restaurant with lots of food spillages and splashes- yuck. Put me off my food!

Love this place because it is just one small restaurant, nothing fancy and about 10 tables and, of course, the food is very good. If a 17 and a 20 year old like the food, that is praise indeed! Started with fish cakes that were excellent, main was sweet and sour prawns on special fried rice. Also very good. Boys had prawn and chicken dumpling starters and beef and chicken dishes as their mains. They loved them both. This restaurant is by far the best in our area and I have tried them all.

The first thing to note about the King & I is the fact it is located on the ground floor of a semi-detached house. As you can expect, the space isn't huge so you find yourself quite close to other diners. The fact that it is someone's house however does give it character and a homely, relaxed vibe. The restaurant has been in Elmers End for over 20 years and there are certificates/awards on the walls: so you know the food is good. It was proven to be true, as the Crackers and Pad Thai was very nice. A good amount of food and reasonably priced.I must warn of 83. “King and I” Noodles which is £8.95 however. Although this was equally delicious, it is incredibly spicy. I had to have a second beer to aid with its consumption. I'd only recommend it for someone who is good with really hot food.If you want to go definitely try to book (especially on the weekends) as it does it busy. All in all a good experience, I'll be back again minus number 83.

The service was initially good and we received our delicious starters in good time, however the chef put meat and prawns in my main course even though I had ordered the vegetarian option. This mistake was very quickly rectified and we enjoyed the rest of our meal, once finished and ready to leave we asked for the bill which took over half an hour to be given to us then a further 10 or so minutes to be given the chance to pay. We pre-booked and turned up as scheduled. We were led to our table by a lady who clearly looked like she was part of the management of the eatery. My observations- The prices are quite reasonable; the menu is sufficiently varied and the food is very good. 4 stars definitely. Try the satay chicken as a starter; excellent. The pad thai is nice too as is the thai green curry. Vegetarian options are plentiful too. So all good in this respect. Where I found a problem was when we reminded above-mentioned lady (on being seated) that my wife had booked mentioning she had a Tastecard, the lady became rather surly. -This surly service continued throughout the meal with each course. We wondered whether we should put it in a review and decided to do so as it is better to be forewarned. We will visit again as the food was lovely but if the poor service recurs then we may have to stop going there.I would say 4.5 stars for the food, 2.5 stars for the service adding up to about 4 stars overall. Could be so much better though- all it will take is some friendly service. If they are unhappy about the Tastecard then they should leave the scheme -If not, they should try to do it justice.

We ate here on New Year's Eve and were surprised it wasn't busier. That suited us fine and it wasn't empty by any means but this place offers some really good Thai food so I would have expected more people to be taking advantage. The menu is fairly standard for a UK Thai place but strangely doesn't offer a complete set of options for every dish. For example they do red curry with beef, chicken or pork - but not prawns. Still, the Chu Chee with prawns and fish made an excellent alternative. The other dishes we had were also very good. Portions are not huge but just order an extra dish of something to share. It's not particularly expensive and you get to try more dishes 'family style'.

We went here last night having lived walking distance away for a year. I have to say, the dated exterior has put me off, but I was wrong. The food is pretty good - there was a lack of sourness in a couple of salad dressings and the 'Thai' salad that came with my grilled beef was no such thing, just lettuce and cucumber and a few bits of pepper. But the ambience was fun (and unusual for Beckenham which is very unadventurous in its cuisine and styling) and overall we were pleased. We're both foodies who are suffering a bit with lack of choice in our new area, and although it's not foodie heaven it's better than the norm. Spicing in my husband's noodle dish was powerful and spot on, which he was very happy with. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area.

My wife and I have been coming here for the past 7 years. The restaurant has been there for 30+ years. It's a small converted end of terrece house that is now a well converted small but very cosy Tia Restaurant. The service is top notch. The food is just as good and cooked by genie tia chefs. Each dish is a must, there isn't anyone time that we've been there when the food hasn't been upto the mark. I would recommend this place to anyone and have done many times over. You will not be sorry in taking your partner here. The atmosphere is very tranquil and you don't get hurried along just as you Finnish each course. Enjoy everyone.

What a funny, dinky, strange, great little restaurant! Shoehorned into what was the front room of a semi-detached house just South of the wonders of exotic Elmers End Roundabout, it seats 24 people and doesn't feel crowded. The decor is astonishing, full of trouvailles and bric-a-brac and totally charming in its accidental harmony. Only open in the evenings ( but they will do lunch for groups if you ask nicely a reasonable time ahead) it offers a surprisingly comprehensive menu of good Thai standards, a short and reasonable drinks list and a very short, but generous and decadent, set of desserts. Service, the night we went, was by two charming Thai ladies who were attentive, efficient, effective and enjoyable to meet. The food takes a longish time to arrive because everything is cooked to order and the kitchen, staffed, I would imagine, by only one more person, can get a bit overwhelmed. They warn you about this early on in the menu so it shouldn't come as a surprise and, when it does arrive, it is excellent. Everything we had was cooked our specification ( mild curry, fiery Pad Thai and so on) and both generous and delicious. Wha the offer is really good, home-style Thai food. It lacks, perhaps, a little of pizzaz of some places, the carved vegetables and so on, but the tastes are astonishing and pretty well certainly just what you'd get in a Thai home where the lady of the house was proud of her local cooking. Drawbacks? The only one is the men's loo; you need to be either a gymnast or incredibly slim (in other words, go before you eat not after the meal) to get in. Its perfectly possibly but a puzzle requiring invention and agility to succeed. Think of it as fun, if you have to go, and don't let it spoil your enjoyment of somewhere totally different, enjoyably so, from any standardised, formulaic, touristy Thai offering. Oh, yes, one last thing: prices. Very, very modest and very good value

My friend and I visited this place on 14th Feb (Valentine's Day). We came here for a nice meal as opposed to a romantic night out - he is my friend and not my partner. I had phoned the restaurant beforehand and was pleased to find out that we could order from the 'A la Carte' menu and were not restricted to the special set menu they had for Valentine's. Not many restaurants are accommodating to this request on nights such as this, so this was an immediate plus point. Upon arrival, we were served very promptly and we ordered some drinks and prawn crackers whilst we looked through the menu. I was pleased to see that the crackers they bought us were what I call the proper Thai ones, ie the brown and spicy ones as opposed to the light watery ones you often get in Chinese restaurants. A point to note here is that I know a manager from a Thai restaurant I used to goto all the time in Bishopsgate, London and that they changed to the Chinese style crackers to cut costs, amongst other things. So I now tend to judge first impressions on a Thai restaurant by what style of crackers they serve ! For starter, I ordered the 'hot and sour chicken' soup. This is how it was described on their restaurant menu, however when it arrived, to me it was obviously 'Tom Yum Gai', one of my favourite soups. Not sure why they describe it this way on their internal menu as I subsequently found that on their website that they actually do call it 'Tom Yum Gai'. For main course, I ordered 'Gai Pad Bai Krapow', a stir fry chicken dish wish basil and chilli sauce. Both my soup and main dish were absolutely delicious. The portion size and quality of the food ingredients rank very highly compared to the numerous Thai restaurants that I have visited over the years. The other big plus point is that all the dishes my friend and I ordered could be either cooked as medium or spicy. This is a great option to be given to customers who are Thai novices and maybe concerned the food might be too hot. Both my friend and I went for spicy and for us, the heat was just right. I did not give this restaurant a 5 star rating for two reasons. Firstly, there wasn't quite enough sauce for my liking with the main course, so where I would usually use this to pour over the remainder of the rice ( there always is), there wasn't any sauce left. Secondly (and I agree with a previous Trip advisor review on this), you do need to be a contortionist to be able to get into the Gents toilets. I could not get in and close the door without my trousers rubbing against the toilet basin. These two minor issues aside, I would still come back. The food was good and service excellent.

There's a lack of Thai restaurants in the West Wickham area, and when we wanted a Thai takeaway, a friend recommended The King and I.Fortunately they delivery to West Wickham as the food was great! For starters, we had Thai fish cakes, chicken dumplings and Thai crackers - all of which were superb. It would have been nice to include a chilli dipping sauce for the crackers, but we had some at home. For mains, we had a Chicken Pa Nang with coconut rice and a Prawn with Garlic and Pad Thai dishes - again, these were excellent.Delivery took about an hour, but the main surprise was that (a) they don't take cards over the phone (quite an annoyance) and (b) the prices came to £40, which felt like a lot for a takeaway. However, it was worth it, as the food was simply fantastic. Hopefully we'll eat there next time!

We went here as a party of 4 on a busy Saturday. Seems they were paying more attention to the amount of takeaway orders than severing their busy restaurant.Waited 10 minutes before we were asked for a drink, food when it did arrive was good - the shocking service just ruined the experience. And if you have the need to go to the toilet, get ready to 'try' and climb in before shutting the door - you need to be a contortionist!!!We won't be coming back sadly!

Fantastic service, but at times a little quiet. Decorated fantastically with traditional Thai art and ornaments. Great tasting food at reasonable prices (we use taste card frequently here). Portions are ample, and the Thai Style ribs to start are recommended. Easy parking out the front of the restaurant in the evening.

We went to the King and I for dinner during January. The restaurant was very busy - full tables and lots of take away orders coming through on the phone. The restaurant couldn't cope with demand. There was one member of waiting staff who was rushing around and with th best will in the world, kept forgetting tables and orders - we had to wait over 20minutes for 2 beers to arrive. Food took a long time to come - we were chatting so that didn't really matter, and when it did arrive, the food was tasty, if a bit lacking in quantity. We were about to order desserts when the lady behind the bar came over asked us to move table so they could squeeze another table in for a group of 4 to sit down. This was the final straw. We cancelled our order and asked for the bill. Our friends had been to the King and I before and had a wonderful meal and I don't doubt that when it's quieter it's quite a nice restaurant to eat in. However our experience here was really very poor. We won't return.

We've been wanting to try out the 'King and I' for a while so took the opportunity to get a take away on New Year's Eve. We called up and the staff were friendly. The food only took fifteen minutes to prepare. We went to collect but they do a delivery service too. My husband had a dish with chilli, chicken and cashew nuts. I went for a red Thai curry with sticky rice. I'm not too good with spicy food so asked for them to make the curry mild. When I tucked in it was just right, and absolutely delicious! The restaurant itself looks adorable, so we'll hopefully dine in at some point in the very near future!

Always superb. Food cooked fresh to order using the freshest ingredients. Great for couple and groups alike. Don;t be put off by the look of it from outside or the decor. Yes it could do with updating but some of the best food served in Asia is from hawker stalls. This place is a gem and a must try. 10 out of 10.

Title says it all... beef massaman curry was over cooked and beef as dry as the desert, the fish dish, the Pla Srong Kruang was flavourless, over cooked again and greasy to the point that it made me want to be sick, and i thought as it was a thai restaurant you must have morning glory, a staple in thailand so cant be that traditional as it says on their website, the last dish was broccoli in oyster sauce, yuk!!!...if i could give it 0 stars it would be too good for this rubbish food...£30 wasted on 3 dishes!!!...

Worst take away i have ever experienced. portions are tiny for the price you pay; the beef dish we had was chewy overcooked and tasteless. The side dish of noodles and vegetables was horrendous and the thai green curry which we asked for as mild was so spicy there was no other flavour. The ribs were an absolute disgrace and had barely any meat at all and was predominately just bone. I have never written a bad review in my life as i really am not very fussy about food at all but for the prices they are charging the quality and quantity of food is disgraceful. Do not order from here ever!

Small restaurant you would not notice , very nice touches in the decor and menus. It was quiet when we went on a Friday at 6:30 pm but I get the feeling later it would be full. We had the sharing starter plater , the Satay and crab claws where particularly good, though it seemed a little small for sharing , I had the Thai green curry for main course I asked for it medium and it was fantastic , a little kick but very flavoursome , it went very well with the coconut rice , the mains came in nice earthier wear pots over a small night light that kept the food warm. Great dinner, took the takeaway and deliver menu will definitely go again , lots of things on the menu I would like to try .

Well I think my heading says it all! Visited recently with my husband and son and we all thought the food was superb. Restaurant is quaint and decorated with Thai memorabilia so very cosy can be a bit too cosy if the restaurant is full and the tables are very close to each other, the chairs are not the most comfortable as others have mentioned but the food definately makes up for it. We had a variety of dishes and all were made with fresh ingredients and cooked to perfection with fantastic flavours. I would definately recommend the Pad Thai and Red Thai Curry. We will be back. Waitress was really welcoming also.

The setting in a converted house looks a little strange from the outside but once you're in you get the Thai character and charm. It reminded me of places I've eaten in Chiang Mai.The food was also very good. You could argue the portions are a little small so set your expectations accordingly and maybe treat yourself to an extra main dish. It's worth it to try what they have to offer. The standard dishes are on offer but they are very tasty with more authenticity than most Thai's these days. I'll be back.

We had a home delivery from here. I had king prawns in a chilli and garlic sauce which was very tasty. My wife had a veggie dish which was not the one we ordered and was bland. The sticky rice was so sticky it was like a bag of goo!The portions were pretty small too. Delivery also went to the wrong house and it was just by chance I happened to be outside and spotted the delivery man. Overall a little disappointing so the search for a decent local Thai delivery place continues.
